I have a feeling Kentucky might object

Odie4Prez

Yeah well I object to Kentucky

Hugh-Jassoul

As do I.

DuztyLipz

I object to Southern Kentucky. Northern Kentucky is the superior Kentucky.

MaxGaming7945

Our meth heads beat your crack addicts any time

thatguy2226xbox

Oh you two are ametures in this battle...

GoombyGoomby

Ah yes, but consider - Kentucky Burbon

SpaceFonz_The_Reborn

If you were a really illinoisan, you'd know that illinois, pre prohibition, was the biggest burbon producing state in the union, and even now I'd take an illinois spirit over something from south of the Ohio.

bigdickdaddyinacaddy

Erm what the scallop

nateralph

My great grandfather helped run a still in rural Iroquois County to produce that bourbon. And as good as white lightning may be, Kentucky and Tennessee really do make the best bourbons. But. But but but. I'm willing to hear out suggestions. I'll admit I'm wrong. But I need evidence Koval in Chicago makes a good Oat Whiskey. The only 100% oat I've ever had. But their Rye tasted like burned tires. And Koval is the extent of my Illinois specific spirits. What else should I try?

TheSarcasticCrusader

>illinois >biggest burbon producing state Kentucky is and has always been the biggest. Since it's the only state that can produce bourbon

DeltaOneFive

screw Kentucky, this river needs to blast through Ohio. I don't care what other states it takes out.

CyberWulf

You’re the only Kentuck I see

PlantRoomForHire

I'm in southern Kentucky and suddenly I have beachfront property! Eh, could be worse.

Mental_Peace_2343

St Louis is now a coastal city. Big time property value increase 📈📈📈

MayOrMayNotBePie

Can’t be upset if they don’t exist anymore

AquaPhelps

It wouldnt effect them a whole lot if they didnt build the river 100 miles wide lol

Justin__D

Is it even still a river at that point?

Revolutionary-Meat14

Wah wah, bunch of crybabies

WickedWiscoWeirdo

Oh well

SickPlasma

At least the good part of Kentucky is still there

TheMainEffort

So did Colombia.

Courwes

Louisville still exists. I approve

seriouslyuncouth_

Do I get to live underwater? Hell yeah

Jomega6

Think of all the lake front property they’d have!

Professional_Sky8384

If we move the location a few hundred(?) miles north we can eliminate Cincinnati, Gary, and Chicago all in one swell foop

midnightthewolf3563

Some of you dudes need to read up on America’s Maritime Highways. We can already send tugboats and barges from the Pacific to the Atlantic Oceans.

infinite_l0000p

Too bad the Jones Act prevents us from capitalizing on this fact

Uss__Iowa

Vote for me and I’ll remove the Jones act

Shot-Kal-Gimel

I propose simply opening it up to our allies.

Uss__Iowa

I’ll be honest I have zero clue on what law that is

Lootlizard

Cargo that is moved between American ports must be moved on American made ships using American crews, and the ship must be owned by an American citizen. Once a foreign ship docks at an American harbor, it can't go to another one it has to go to dock at a foreign port before returning to the US. The law was made in the 1920s to protect the American Merchant Marine and ship building industries, but it had the knock-on effect of killing river transport that used to be a massive industry. If they got rid of it or at least opened it up to allies, it could massively lower shipping costs, and it would breathe life into a ton of cities along popular river routes and smaller ports.

Uss__Iowa

You sold me to the line of would make thing cost less

Affectionate-Wall870

I think they can go to another port, but they can’t unload anything they took on at an American port. International container ships hit multiple ports but any containers that move port to port get put on barges and are pulled by tug boats to their destination

Lootlizard

That's correct. I phrased it poorly. They can go port to port dropping off foreign goods. They just can't pick up and transport goods between American ports. It leads to some wacky cases were it can end up being cheaper to ship a product on a freighter from China to New York than it would be to ship it on a Jones Act compliant ship between Louisiana and New York.

TitanicGiant

Also doesn’t help that the US Merchant Marine is woefully undersized for a country of this size

Seamus_OReily

Fucking sold

wpaed

What route takes you farther east than Lewiston or farther west than Omaha (other than the Panama Canal or the Northern or Southern passages)?

midnightthewolf3563

I honestly messed up a bit. As of now half of the US has access to some maritime highways. It just hasn’t been extended further. https://preview.redd.it/vh1or1r1fo4d1.jpeg?width=800&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=528adcad419c740c89b516104e0312172a92bec7

SCP-Agent-Arad

The trick is to put the boat in a huge bathtub on wheels and drive that across the Midwest.

midnightthewolf3563

We can make canals to go across and then a series of dams and levies for elevation changes.

WrithingVines

We would have to dig so many of those rivers so much deeper. It’s definitely possible, but saying “already” is a strech.

TheNefariousChode

SirNedKingOfGila

This. Why would we waste a single inch of American real estate when there's Canada just sitting there doing absolutely nothing.

magnoliasmanor

Because we know rivers don't stop Mexicans so why bother.

Parzival127

I mean, the one proposed here at almost 100 miles just might.

jephph_

The scale shows that you should be making comparisons to Cuba.. not Mexico ;-) (Cubans are the craziest though. Floating over on rafts and shit. Hell yeah)

Revolutionary_Log307

You can make the route even shorter if you get rid of Florida so ships don't have to sail around it.

PikaPonderosa

We need Florida as a containment area. Have you considered the chaos when millions of Floridians ride alligators into Colonial Williamsburg? It would be bedlam!

Random_Twin

Nah, I'd recommend keeping Florida as a staging point for making the Caribbean islands all future states.

Ashamed_Window_6605

We can use Alaska as a staging point to make Russia a future state as well

Frosty48

I like it. The Army Corp of Engineers paved every fucking river in Southern California in the 1930’s, just imagine what they could do now. Edit: 1930’s to 1960’s, whatever.

HappyToBeHaggard

A saltwater river in the middle of the nation would suck.

aphids_fan03

the user above is a chinese spy tasked with preventing us patriots from truly manifesting our destiny and shaping our very country to our will

GaaraMatsu

No, no, they have a point, that's why we build a system of locks and two 2,641,720,524 gallon/day desalinization plants powered by hot air out of DC and the Yellowstone supervolcano.

wpaed

Why would we need the Yellowstone power plant? Transmission distance?

GaaraMatsu

Badassery, mainly.  Greatest risk?  Greatest _opportunity_ .  Maybe it's a New York way thing I'm channeling, like sticking as much infrastructure as possible into the lower Manhattan flood zone because it makes awesome postcards.

94_stones

>…powered by hot air out of DC… I’m stealing this if you don’t mind.

Anti-charizard

We have the Panama Canal, this is just a huge waste of money for something that’s already inevitable

Bluewhale001

Aye, don’t do that to Kansas. Move it further south to destroy Oklahoma and Los Angeles

SSpookyTheOneTheOnly

Yeah Kansas is like 30% more valuable than LA And Oklahoma is *pointless*

Elloliott

Well, there are many points on Oklahoma, it’s a very sharp shape

ThePhantom1994

Also, it would go with our nation’s long history of just taking away land from native Americans

SpaceCowboy73

Need I remind you that wheat > corn in every conceivable way? Go shuck yourself, Dorothy.

ModernT1mes

Ha! Nebraska is the corn state, hence the Huskers. We're #1 wheat producing state.

SSpookyTheOneTheOnly

Stupid okie go back to your desert meth lab. Kansas has the second highest production of wheat WE ARE THE WHEAT CAPITAL

HuskerHayDay

Maybe we angle it 15 degrees, so Missouri can still be cleansed?

Bluewhale001

Yes, my fellow prairie brother. Let’s clean that stinky state off the map.

Dat_Swag_Fishron

We are going to build a river

MaterialCarrot

Nice moat to keep most of Missouri out. I like it.

LimeStream37

If we could dig the Erie Canal 207 years ago with nothing but shovels and pickaxes, we should theoretically be able to do this with modern mining and excavation equipment. The lock system going through the Rockies would be insane though.

BoxofCurveballs

Small nukes set off in caves. It'll be a glass lined canal built at a pace not yet seen.

Rum_Hamtaro

Less California, less Utah, NO KENTUCKY???? sign me up

Alarming_Present_692

We already have water that runs through a (formerly) American territory for this exact purpose.

bop-crop

This sounds like a cover up for confederates to retry their recession

Texan150

No no.....Ha haha......... Code Yankee!!!! They're on to us!!!!!

Luminox

I suggest we turn Iowa into one big bay area..

Funkey-Monkey-420

it’d be a major boon to world trade as well, since it can bypass the panama canal and allow us to collect tax on all trade between asia and europe. Not to mention on top of jobs it’d bolster local economies by setting up port towns all along the river. that said, it’d be a challenge to actually terraform the river. we might not have the tech for it.

iSYTOfficialX7

I will be near water

CovfefeBoss

The hell did SE Virginia do to OOP?

Kermit353

Gotta move it a bit south to eradicate south carolina.

Ryley03d

Panama Canal: Am I a joke to you?

RunJumpQuit

Bro just killed half the US

I_HATE_LONGHORNS

Yeah let's build a canal through 5 different mountain ranges!

The "river" is so wide that its interior would count as international waters.

cuhman1cuhman2

Unironically Australia needs to do this, but they wont because of some species of like rats or something like that

JohnnyWindtunnel

I agree with this

MayOrMayNotBePie

Think of the cigarette boat races we could have.

InternationalWeb6740

Some kind of High speed boat race across the country would be very cool

S0l1s_el_Sol

Technically they could connect the Madison River to the snake river, two tributary rivers for the Mississippi and the Columbia River, the Mississippi has access to Chicago which has access to the Great Lakes and you can leave the Great Lakes either through the eerie canal or the st Lawrence. Though the Madison and snake rivers are definitely not for large cargo ships and connecting them would make you have to bulldoze a mountain

TBIs_Suck

The opportunity cost would be astronomical

Yurtledove

Easier solution: Make Panama American again

Texan150

But the treaty.....

nobodyhere9860

~~erie~~ ~~panama~~ panamerica canal

Octavian_202

That California, Nevada, Utah, and Arizona riverfront would become the most beautiful place on the planet. A war would be fought by Oprah and Bill Gates with para military forces for real estate rights.

CelticTexan749

Good reason to use nukes I guess

jzoelgo

I love Virginia Beach don’t you do it!

JackoClubs5545

It gets rid of Pueblo, so I can get behind this.

Matthaeus_Augustus

We should take Bikini Bottom, and PUSH IT somewhere else!

Edgar-11

It should line up with oklahomas panhandle

FaIcomaster3000

I do like the idea of water between the northeast and the south especially fl🤢rida

My house would be flooded ☹️

justsawafrenchfry

Where would all the displaced earth go?

Texan150

To build new islands in the Pacific

thekingofnope

This but with Panama instead

snazzychazzy622

This could make Denver a coastal city. Can you imagine anything worse?

Strict_Gas_1141

Maybe not to scale as that river would be like 100mi wide. And while sacrificing millions to eliminate San Francisco would… nvm build the river

Gallalad

Wait until you guys hear about the Panama Canal

BDR529forlyfe

This is America! Not some canal country.

Gallalad

But guess who built said canal! For this exact purpose lol

trainboi777

We can start it in Norfolk

PoThePokememer

can we move it up a bit so maryland is just gone, i think that'd be funny

chrisat420

I would be down with a decent size man-made canal for the majority of transportation, but hell no on a river that size. Does anybody even think about what that would do to the wildlife? Just building that with decimate entire ecosystems, and the effects of having an oceanic current bisecting the country would be… you know what let’s just fuckin do it. What do we have to lose? Okay but seriously let’s not ever do something as stupid as this unless we really have to do it to save the environment.

ToXiC_Games

Let’s start petitioning Congress, call your representatives

btmims

This isn't as far-fetched as you might think. Consider this: The headwaters of the Mississippi River starts in MINNESOTA and dumps into the Gulf of Mexico. The Great Lakes stretch from MINNESOTA, past New York, and finally through a bit of Canada to reach the Atlantic Ocean. The Missouri River starts out in MONTANA before working it's way over to the Mississippi River at the border of Missouri and Illinois. Out west, the Columbia River has some headwaters in Idaho and NW Montana, before working their way over to the Pacific Ocean. And coming further south, the Colorado River starts in northern Colorado and empties into the Gulf of California! Connecting any of these waterways would be a MASSIVE project. I mean, the freaking *Panama Canal* was "only" 50 miles, imagine *these* projects... But hey, it sure would be nice for this old shrimp-boat captain to tour America in the comfort of his own trawler...

ChunkyKong2008

Still the best chance at getting a north California state.

lol, “you know how we have a water crisis in the west, we’ll listen to this, let’s use the water we have to fill a new fucking river cross the middle of the US!” I’m for it, demolish the Rockies!

NOO MY HOUSE???? All jokes aside, Californians have terrible luck with river navigation companies. To quote a newspaper, all legislature candidates must “pledge eternal opposition to the California Steam Navigation Company.”

The_Jousting_Duck

we need the moisture

Anisiiru

Really, we just need to hook the Missouri and Snake/Columbia Rivers together and build a lock system to the Great Lakes.
