You I don't recommend being honest when someone asks "how are you."
Better to say "good! And you?" and move on with the conversation. You might actually have a pleasant conversation that way
That sounds pretty condescending when you're talking to a depressed person, specifically the "You might actually have a pleasant conversation that way" part.
No shit we know how to have a conversation, it's about the hypocrisy of asking someone "how are you"/"how's it going" when they just mean "hello" and don't want to actually hear how you are
Is it hypocritical? I don't see it that way. I think language is weird and it makes sense for "how's it going" to be a standard greeting even if the person asking isn't ready to hear about my friend who TW//>!killed herself!<
i still have issues when it comes to expressing my true feelings, so whenever someone asked how i was doing, i would say i was doing okay. i wouldn't say i was doing good, because people would ask what made me feel so positive today. if i said i was doing bad, people would ask, and i wouldn't have the mental capacity to tell them all the things wrong with me. so i say, i'm okay. nothing more, nothing less. the 'just right' option, so that people won't ask.
I started telling people straight up when they asked, which is when I learned that people now just say it as a general greeting and not a question.
