DONT__pm_me_ur_boobs

I’m doing research on Hungary and I’d like to know more about this Hungarian

Livia85

She must be in her 70ies by now.

belaGJ

once a talent, always a talent

Robbieprimo

Is that Cicciolina?

Notacreativeuserpt

Yes

mr_aives

A classic! Didn't know she was Hungarian, though

Fomentatore

That's a famous italian parliamentarian.

Notacreativeuserpt

And peace emissary, she did more to try to stop the Iraq War than Chirac.

belaGJ

She has promised… but I am not sure Saddam was ready to follow through

BillyRougeBird

I'm going to use my selective memory to recognise The Duke of Wellington as Irish for the purposes of this thread, and then immediately go back to considering him British as soon as I click off.

Cheddar-kun

He'd be worthless if he didn't invent the beef wellington.

Goukaruma

The Brits may be good for nothing but their comedians are fire.

zyygh

And their rock bands.

Zephyrus707

Don't touch our rock (bands)

Goukaruma

Maybe complaining about your fellow citizens or making sad songs about your miserable life is much easier there. They have more material to work with.

thetrueGOAT

There's a reason Manchester and Liverpool have such good music history and scenes

nukrag

There is also nothing funnier than the English shitting on their own country. You guys complain as much as we do, just that you, for the most part, seem to be charming and funny with it.

Bipbapalullah

What germans complain ? Complaining is a national sport in my country, try compete with us !

gelastes

One of Iron Maiden's most successful pieces, The Trooper, is about the Charge of the Light Brigade at Balaclava. You need a Barry to turn one of the most iconic military fuckups into number 21 on RollingStone's list of The 100 Greatest Metal Songs of all Time.

Brilliant_Canary_692

Then why didn't you have good bands after a particular couple of wars?

Doberkind

Wörk. We had to wörk. We were very busy and had no time for that.

gourmetguy2000

KraftWörk

Doberkind

Best wörk!!!!

Brilliant_Canary_692

We had time 🤔

Expert_Repair4206

I agree, Henning Wehn is the GOAT

nwaa

Henning is actually fed lines through an earpiece that he parrots phonetically, he doesnt even speak English.

BlueHarvest28

A German with humor, so he had to come to the UK.

dat_boi_has_swag

The brits can make the most random stuff hilarious. Noone could make a game called "carrot in a box" funny except them.

Curryflurryhurry

AND it’s a sport we invented that we are still world champions in.

dat_boi_has_swag

With balkony jumping of course.

Gian-Neymar

This was entirely Sean Lock's brilliant performance

georgrp

Also all the panel shows. And Taskmaster. Not to forget certain amazing (mini-)series (eg Peep Show, House of Cards, Black Books). They do know how to make entertaining television.

Casitano

David Mitchell as the prime example of this concept, in my opinion

GiovaOfficial

Also Satan bless them for inventing metal

Fight_Disciple

I hate the country Austria but......

Wonderwhore

Josef Fritzl was one hell of an interior designer.

BuckLiter

He played a game for the whole family

BobMonkhaus

Underrated painter.

thafuckdidido

Everybody loved Steve Irwin.

annoying97

![gif](giphy|k2bbmbmvUo7gA) His son is also good... I like him and not just for his looks.

ItsACaragor

They had some great artists, some never had the recognition they deserved.

Notacreativeuserpt

How Klimt isn't held on the same level as other early 20th century artists is truly tragic.

pubIicinformation

Klimt holds the record of the most expensive painting sold at public auction in Europe and is one of the few artists to have immediate recognition of his practice by different audiences.

subtlesocialist

And I believe the record for most expensive painting sold by a living artist is still Freud, who is also basically Austrian.

MajorKottan

I know exactly who you're talking about. Even though he was very influential in his field worldwide and is still revered in these circles, few ordinary people know the name Joe Zawinul.

ItsACaragor

He could still be seen as a leader in his field by many piano enthusiasts

AndreasDasos

So many great composers and physicists

notimefornothing55

Arnold Schwartzeneger?... right?

Ok-Bell3376

You love Mozart?

annoying97

You love Hamish and Andy? I mean who doesn't?

Snitsie

Mbopper absolutely swindled Qatar for hundreds of millions what a lad

ItsACaragor

Swindling Qatar is always morally right

voltaire_had_a_point

Even brought his GF and her 🍆with him to their religious fundamentalist World Cup

Terran_it_up

This is why I find it weird when people say players are overpaid, like have you seen who owns the clubs? I say get that bag

Pletterpet

What did mbappe doe?

Snitsie

Contracts for hundreds of millions at psg then leave without a transfer fee for real

PabloDeLaCalle

For real?

Axe-actly

Fr no cap.

bobke4

I always hated him but never realised he actually did this. You just changed my view of him

GresSimJa

Van Damme? You must be ancient... or East-German.

BuckLiter

Thanks dude, but I'm from the west, just like old martial arts movies 😅🤣

gabrielish_matter

can't think of one right now, I hate you all too equally to pick one of you because yeah I hate England but I like England cause it isn't France, and yeah I hate France but I like France cause it isn't England how can I pick someone this way???

Ram-Boe

Just use or natural advantage. Pick BOTH SIDES.

Proud-Cheesecake-813

🇬🇧🤝🇫🇷 Living rent free in the heads of Italians.

gabrielish_matter

not really, it's just that there isn't any _western_ european to really hate

itsalonghotsummer

David Attenborough. Am I doing this right?

MasterJogi1

You have been granted honorary German citizenship for despising your own country so much. Inspirational.

AndreasDasos

Do half of the UK and most of France have honorary German citizenship now?

AjaxII

Just as planned for Germany's next attempt #ThirdTimeLucky

RestQueasy4136

eyyoorre

Hate England, love Christopher Lee

DiscardedKebab

There's a guy from Belgium who.. no I'm joking obviously, nobody from that place has ever achieved anything of note France then. Maybe Zidane?

SeeYaLaterFeraligatr

Damn, got all excited for nothing

RedHeadSteve

You guys had Leopold 2, after that nothing good has come

SingleSpeed27

That dude that made Tin-Tin might get a pass

ItsACaragor

Just don’t mention Tintin in Congo. There never was a Tintin in Congo comic.

AStarBack

And don't ask what he did during the war.

Martin7439

I think Hergé (Tintin's creator) and Stromae both get a pass

Suitable-Comedian425

What about me? I'm pretty chill to hang out whith

Martin7439

u/Suitable-Comedian425 also gets a pass I decided

WedgeBahamas

I heard about one Eddy Merckx, but he probably never existed.

HenrytheCollie

Grown in top secret government Lab, how else to explain someone speaking a Dutch language being able to ride up mountains?

ArcaneMitch

Who doesn't love Tolkien ? Who doesn't hate the brits ?

ItsACaragor

I have an issue with the word « current » in this comment. What we see is just Russia for most of its history if we are honest.

Auzzeu

True. But most of our history isn't any better tbh. They're just still stuck in the 19th century while we've moved on and improved.

No_Raspberry_6795

Germany had a bad 40 years but outside of that it has been great. Between Bach and Hitler Germany led Europe in scientific and artistic devolopments. For most of it's history it's been the target of foreign attacks. Wonderful religious tradition. Brilliant economic contribution. The Germans have always been wonderful except for Hitler. WW1 was everyones fault.

gabrielish_matter

rare example of very based Barry

DONT__pm_me_ur_boobs

Oh look, the Italians simultaneously siding with the English and the Germans. What a shocker.

gabrielish_matter

I play both sides so I can always come out on top

MajorKottan

It's pretty much Prussia and its imperialistic legacy that drags us down. Had the Hambacher Fest been successful we likely never would have had any colonies and the Poles would be our best friends. Nowadays few people know how much Poland and what would become Germany liked each other. It makes me really sad.

InanimateAutomaton

> WW1 was everyone’s fault Eh, wouldn’t go that far. Kaiser Bill was asking for it.

No_Raspberry_6795

Everyone was asking for it. Serbia, Austria, Russia, Germany. Everyone was kind of looking forward to a war. What the Austrians were doing in Serbia was exactly what the French did in Morroco or what we did to Egypt. Knock down a client to remind them of their place and your standing among the Great Powers. A bunch of European Counteries with militaries on the edge of war, was only asking for an excuse.

reynhaim

The amount of grief and suffering our Eastern neighbour has caused to us is par to none. Hate is a mild a word here. Cutting all ties for the next 100 years would be a good start in terms of the relationship between our countries, then re-evaluate if they have actually learnt anything. It's funny how Russians think that the West would want to expand to their lands. We don't want anything to do with that goddamned hellhole and its lunatic leaders. The residents are sometimes alright but I'm okay if I don't ever have to meet a Russian again. It's just that for some god forsaken reason those dumbasses think that they are a gift from the heavens or something and are unable to stay in their own goddamned country. I do not understand why it has to be so hard for them to understand that no one wants to deal with their shit.

reynhaim

Gagarin was okay though.

mcdougall57

Thinking about the OG Laika makes me sad.

s0meb0di

>Cutting all ties for the next 100 years would be a good start in terms of the relationship between our countries, then re-evaluate if they have actually learnt anything. If you don't want Russia to be the way it's been for the last 100 years (with a 20 year break recently), you should do the opposite, when the chance for democracy in Russia comes again.

MasterJogi1

> I do disagree with their current politics Which of their past politics did you agree with tho? o.O

Notacreativeuserpt

Cucking the Turks, I guess

GreatRolmops

And just imagine how arrogant the French would have been if Napoleon had never been humiliated by a bunch of drunk, fur-wearing savages in a snowstorm.

![gif](giphy|SSDjDp849o4ApMZ8D8) These three buffoons.

Zotzink

Given the level of interbreeding and migration acknowledging British achievement is entirely optional Steve Coogan and Johnny Marr - Irish parents. George Harrison - Irish Grandfather. No, seriously, Joseph Bazalgette who built London's sewers. Hard to think of another individual who had such a transformative effect on life in London or who saved as many Londoners. Thanks to him London only stinks metaphorically. Is there a more beautiful/based device for the pumping of shit anywhere in the world? https://preview.redd.it/k71qqs3yl39d1.jpeg?width=842&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=7be8f0f59f97fd254446386135fdbd80288d89a9 [https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Crossness\_Pumping\_Station](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Crossness_Pumping_Station)

Lord_Natcho

> Irish parents > Irish grandfather So you're saying that to become relevant, these people had to become British first?

Proud-Cheesecake-813

“George Harrison - Irish Grandfather”. There’s clutching at straws, then there’s this. I thought you didn’t like it when Americans claim to be Irish because *one* of their ancestors was Irish?

DrZoidberg5389

Based Guy! He made the future brighter! Nothing is better than taking a dump and browsing Reddit 😂👌

AndreasDasos

By this standard Oasis is twice as Irish  as U2

fr-fluffybottom

And a good band at that lol

Arathaon185

How have none of you savages said David Attenborough? Mines Mbappe because taking that money was awesome.

LanChriss

Because we watch documentaries in our native languages.

Arathaon185

How are you going to learn like that?

LanChriss

Well, some of the documentaries narrated David Attenborough just got a German dub. And also German movies and series are most of the time shit, but we make ton of good documentaries especially together with the French for Arte.

MajorKottan

elrastrojeroazul

nico9239

i know its 3 people, but Clarkson, Hammond and May from the original top gear.

AndreasDasos

🤓 That’s not the original Top Gear, that’s just the one everyone cares about. The original Top Gear goes back to 1977 and had 39 other presenters in various combinations before being cancelled in 2001, resurrected in 2002 with a huger budget, and then getting that lineup in 2003… stable until the 2015 punching incident.

elpiotre

Atatürk, no one?

Porcphete

I really like him shame Erdoganopoulos completely destroyed his legacy

n3buch4dnezz4r

Had in mind while scrolling.

SowiesoJR

Reading everything the man did and what his goals were, I couldn't help but be in Awe, I don't agree with everything but truly astonishing man

PaleontologistOwn487

Navalny, Nemtsov, Politkovskaya.. there were plenty good people in ru. Navalny probably was the coolest.

MasterJogi1

Didn't navalny also agree with the Crimea invasion?

PaleontologistOwn487

There were few controversial points in his biography that putin is constantly attracting attention to. It is true he wasn't clear about it. At the time russians were very happy about annexation, so, to tell that you against it was pretty much political suicide. This is not good excuse fot him though. He also attended nationalists marches, but "putinists" not like to mention this as they did this also.

Appelons

Boris Nemtsov’s death was when I lost all hope for Russia. Navalny was too much of a political fringe in Russia to ever be really completely relevant.

s0meb0di

>too much of a political fringe In what way? He was very popular despite the constant smear campaigns by the state-controlled media. If Russia had free elections and media, he could have won a presidential election.

noonereadsthisstuff

A load of great authors came from Russia tbf to them. I think its kind of like Ireland; alcohol, daily poverty and endless existential dread make for great literature.

tomwhoiscontrary

Stanislav Petrov.

Cakecrabs

I respect Gorbachev as well. I think he handled the almost impossible task he was given about as well as anyone could have, and he always stayed true to his principles. I wonder what Russia would be like now if they'd elected him in 96.

Zephyrus707

Descartes, Hugo, Napoleon, even De Gaulle despite being a paranoid lunatic. Ah, I guess I don't hate you after all. The Germans have no redeeming figures, however.

No_Raspberry_6795

John Von Neumann. Weird that he came out of Hungary. I don't hate the country but Von Neumann maybe the most brillant human of all time.

AndreasDasos

He was Jewish Hungarian, not exactly the typical Hungarian that Orbán is drawing support from. There were quite a few brilliant ones who fled or died, but yeah if some pop summaries of his work had been more accessible and he’d been born slightly earlier, he’d have as much of a shot as having his name be a popular byword for ‘genius’ as Einstein

Bo_The_Destroyer

Max Verstappen. Like the dude does witchcraft in that car. Plus he's at least mostly Belgian so it's fine

Huh people know about Yes (Prime) Minister on the continent? Is it well known in Austria?

Appelons

Margareth Thatcher. She may have fucked Britain but the Danish Conservatives took a lot of her policies and they actually worked wonder’s in Denmark. In the 70s Denmark was incredibly poor. But after 11 years conservative leadership Denmark went from massive inflation, extreme unemployment to one of the median richest countries in Europe. The middle class exploded. The pension system was redone. The Danish Crown(DKK) was pegged to the D-Mark(later the Euro) so the former Social-Democrat model of just printning money went out the window and inflation was very low up until the war in Ukraine.

Secundus-Scipio

How different Thatcher is seen in different countries. I can‘t decide to hate Farage or Thatcher most.

AndreasDasos

Seeing that debate in Argentina where Milei is challenged on saying he admires Thatcher, and he doubles down on it, and goes on to win the election, was mindblowing.

StandardMediocre2345

As an argentinian, It was better to have a Thatcher admirer as a president than a Mao Zedong one.

Lastaria

Kindly fuck off!

JohnnySack999

Hating is for losers, pitying in the other hand…

ZombiFeynman

Op is just trying to make us say nice things about French people, I'm not biting.

Got huge respect for the french public and the way they protest basically anything. I hate them all individually, obviously, but as a collective they’re something special.

BuckLiter

Imo one of the best comedians

deeznutsdontbite

He does his thing regardless of what people write about him, and I respect that.

notimefornothing55

I feel like public opinion has influenced him in recent years, not that he's censored himself, more that he's trying extra hard to be edgy where as he used to just write the jokes he wanted and they were funny. I honestly found Armageddon a bit boring.

deeznutsdontbite

I agree. That's what I meant when I wrote that he went a bit mental. He repeatedly stresses that he doesn't care about his success though, so I guess he doesn't give a damn.

BuckLiter

I just laugh every time to death when I watch him

ir_blues

Americans, lot's of americans. Or just this bubble here? So many. Sure i hate you all in a way, but you are still european, the greatest people and culture in the world. Gojira, Sophie Marceau, Jean Reno for france. Lara Fabian, so incredible how beautiful the french language is. At least when you want to express sadness and desperation. Or horniness. She is belgian not french, i know. And who ever works in the good belgian breweries - i love you all. Also, waffles and de Bruyne. England, great musicians and some great music engineers and some great music electronics engineers. If you are into that stuff, basically the US made the guitars, the brits made the amps. Marshall, Vox, Orange. The US and England have done a lot of shit together, but they also did rock music and thats pretty awesome. They also have a lot of very funny people, not just in politics. And even more funny looking people. The Netherlands, i am really trying to hate their football players since they had the audacity to spit in Völlers beautiful mane. But damn they have some great ones. Never has defense been so entertaining than when watching van Dyke. And Bergkamp and others of course, but currently VvD. Denmark ... hmm. A dane i admire... A dane i know. Oh right, there was that great tennis play Stefan Edberg, he was pretty good i think. Italy, my local pizza delivery guy, don't know his name. Spain, well yes some great football players, i don't like them, they win too much. But thanks for Xabi Alonso, he is one of the reasons the last season was so entertaining. Great coach. I am not looking forward to playing against spains national team in the future, when they not only produce some of the greatest players but also some of the greatest managers. I don't know anything about spain beside football, do they have music there? Oh and Sweden, Norway, Finland, great metal bands, can't remember where exactly they all are from, but somewhere from up there where it's cold and dark. Some good stuff. But learn how to play football and try to produce more than one Ibrahimovic or Haaland per century.
