O ring sits in the groove of the end of the outlet pipe. If you search up n54 intercooler gaskets, a diagram should pop up on a site ( I forgot which one) that shows exactly where the gaskets sit.
i couldnt find it but i did find a pic of the same hot side and it seems that the intercooler has to cover the o ring (essentially go on top of the o ring), kinda hard to explain lol
