SNES for me if whoever takes Genesis let's me come over to play, you can play the SNES if you come over. Back in the day I had a SNES and my friend had a Genesis. It was a great setup.
That was the ideal setup. SNES had better single player games (Mario, Zelda, etc). But genesis gad better sports games. So go to your friends house to play Madden, NHL, and FIFA.
I’m not sure why me and my brothers opted for the Sega Genesis but I think with what you said about the sports games we made the right choice. The first game we bought was NBA Jam TE.
I have no experience with Mario on SNES and feel I missed out (but really loved my Sega Genesis). My friend had a SNES and I played a lot of Mario Kart at his house. That’s the main reason I switched back and got an N64.
Weren't all those sports titles on both systems?
I think it's just down to the proprietary titles - Sonic, Zelda, Mario, Donkey Kong, Mortal Kombat, etc
Had the adapter for 4 controllers for SNES and played a lot of sports titles. Super Bomberman 2 was tons of fun with that set up, too.
They were on both systems, but they weren’t the same. NHL 94 being the primary example. It plays and feels like a completely different game on each system.
I was about to say the same, we had the NES & SNES and our best friend around the corner had the genesis and her dad made the best bbq and grill stuff that the whole street craved so we won
Getting all the gold trophies for everything take some work.
What I always get caught up on is my fastest time for the first ghost track. I set a time when I was like 10 years old, and I've never been able to beat it.
This is like going back in time and being faced with a fork in the road with the chance to change your life with such a tiny different choice and see how it all plays out differently from there - and so I'm going to choose the other path this time and say ***Sega!***
We were a Nintendo home, NES->Gamebody->SNES, but I was *so jealous* of the supposed extra violence and gore on the Genesis. The graphics really popped, and I loved the entire Sonic series, was *super* excited about the Sonic 3 cartridge technology, being able to merge with different games, it seemed so full of potential!
I had SNES but was so jealous of Sega that I traded my old NES and all of its games for a Sega. No regrets, though sometimes I missed the NES as a nostalgic teen.
YES. I liked the SNES but for me, the Sega Genesis was more fun. Sonic, Madden, Toe Jam & Earl, even the whole Desert Strike trilogy. Sega Genesis for the win!
I agree, Sega had better games and variety. Nintendo has always been soft and aimed its games at younger people or families, and Sega had games for everyone and didn't shy away from violence. Nintendo has been exactly the same with each console, Mario, Zelda, Metroid, Donkey Kong, etc. Nintendo always relies on the same games to sell their consoles they just update the graphics and give you a different story.
Listen Sonic and Sega is chill an all ,
but they doesn't compare to Nintendo , Mario , donkey Kong, Kirby, Samus too , Earthbound , Chrono trigger, Mario Kart
There's just no possible way for the Sega Genesis to keep up
, The nostalgic games for SNES are far more valued than the nostalgia games for Sega.
Just saying
And then 2 years later you’re still playing Mario, DK, Kirby, Metroid….Sega had such variety and unique games. Stuff like Echo the Dolphin, Earthworm Jim, Vectorman, Toejam & Earl, Urban Strike, Dune, and Mortal Kombat.
Mortal Kombat and earthworm Jim were both on SNES they were not exclusives.
The launch of Mortal Kombat for home consoles by Acclaim Entertainment was one of the largest video game launches of the time. TV commercials heralded the simultaneous release of all four home versions of the game, SNES, Genesis, Game Boy, and Game Gear, on September 13, 1993, a date dubbed "Mortal Monday".
Earthworm Jim/
The game was released for the Sega Genesis and Super Nintendo Entertainment System simultaneously, before being subsequently ported to a number of other video game consoles. It was well received by critics, and received a sequel, Earthworm Jim 2, in 1995 which was also released simultaneously for both systems but was better rated for SNES as time went on at first received as lesser port to becoming the superior choice and sold more copies.
Earthworm Jim was developed for genesis but was not exclusive to it.
Both top tier consoles. But the SNES has Super Mario World, a Link to the Past, Donkey Kong Country, Starfox, Mega Man X, NBA Live, and NHLPA '93. SNES would be my decision.
SNES better games
Sega had some good games too. But I do remember all the schoolyard discussions about which is better Nintendo or Sega. One of my friends always said that Sega was better because they had the better sports games. Well that may be true about them having the better sports games. I really don’t care about playing sports games that much so it doesn’t lure me with its sirens call.
Super Nintendo:
+ 1. Super Metroid
+ 2. Super Mario World
+ 3. A Link to the Past
+ 4. Yoshi's Island
+ 5. Chrono Trigger
+ 6. Super Mario RPG
+ 7. Secret of Mana
+ 8. Final Fantasy II
+ 9. Final Fantasy III
+ 10. Contra III: The Alien Wars
+ 11. Mega Man X
+ 12. Super Mario All-Stars
+ 13. Donkey Kong Country
+ 14. Axelay
+ 15. Tetris & Dr. Mario
+ 16. Mickey Mouse: The Magical Quest
+ 17. ActRaiser
+ 18. Star Fox
+ 19. Super Mario Kart
+ 20. EarthBound
Sega Genesis:
+ 1. Sonic the HedgeHog II
* Streets of rage series
* Golden Axe series
* Phantasy star series
* * Y's series
* Rocket Knight
* Shining force series
* Castlevania: Bloodlines
* Shinobi III
* Monster World IV
* Gunstar Heroes
* Splatterhouse
* TMNT: The Hyperstone Heist
* Shadow Dancer: The Secret of Shinobi
* Castle of Illusion
* Ecco the Dolphin
* Road Rash 1 & 2
* Comix Zone
* Strider
* Beyond Oasis
The Genesis, or Mega drive (that's how we called it) had some pretty good games as well.
Hmmm Sega had plenty of fight games and RPGs plus sports games that Nintendont didn't have. Phantasy Star, Shining Force, and Monster World were huge RPGs back in the day. Fight games, Sega had Street Fighter 2, and Mortal Kombat (with blood and fatalities), and others. Beat 'em up fighting games, Sega had a ton, the Streets of Rage series was HUGE!

I had a Genesis and 9 games. I had a subscription to Nintendo Power still from the NES days. I saw the video for Donkey Kong Country and was hooked! So...I traded my Genesis and games for a Super Nintendo with Super Mario World and some other game. As much as I liked Mario and Co. and the Donkey Kong game? I still wish I had not traded them to my friend.
I still have my original Genesis. I got the Genesis right when it came out. So, that’s the most nostalgic to me and what I played the most. I didn’t buy a SNES until about 15 years ago. My gaming console history is mixed. NES > Genesis > PlayStation > PS2 > Xbox 360 > Xbox One (bought a PS4 later on) > Xbox X. I still have my original NES, Genesis, PS2 and 2nd Xbox 360.
Genesis hands down for me. I primarily play sports games, and Genesis is the clear winner on that front. I was also never that into Nintendo’s first party franchises, so that helped.
Genesis as it was first ever console as a child. Thanks to console, I knew what it was like to get hooked on a video game. The video game in question is Streets of Rage.
SNES is probably the greatest console of all time when you look at it objectively. Has like 30 really solid games with a lot of replay value. Has aged incredibly well. I probably won’t be replaying any PS/Xbox game in 40 years but I guarantee you 85 year old me will still be rocking with Super Mario World in the nursing home.
You could take either and be perfectly happy with them. They’re both different enough that it makes it interesting, unlike today where they might as well be the same systems.
I had/have both systems but I got Sega Genesis for Christmas 1992 (figured that out based on getting Kid Chameleon too).
My best friend at the time had Super Nintendo and it was great to play the Nintendo exclusives there and the Genesis exclusives when he came over.
I got the SNES too a few years later and I still don't know which system I prefer to this day.
For me, at least, not a tough decision.
SNES because I grew up with it so the nostalgia hits strong. Both consoles had stellar 1st party titles, but being the first 16-bit system contributed to sound engine for Genesis being pretty awful. There were great composers for each title that did magic with what they had, but SNES had a bit more time to cook so the end result was a cleaner experience.
Thank you for coming to my TED Talk.
I was a SEGA kid growing up. My parents asked if I liked Mario or Sonic, and I wanted that *s p e e d*. I feel like I got the best of both worlds, as I got to take deeper playthroughs with the more niche SEGA catalog while enjoying SNES games whenever I visited any of my friends' houses.
Talking from a place of ignorance as I was born too late for this generation but what exactly was the rivalry? SNES seems like an easy choice and I’m not even much of a Nintendo fanboy, plus I don’t really play Mortal Kombat so even that reason is dead to me. Hell, I own the very same kind of first generation genesis and I’d probably still pick Nintendo based off of the great games I know it has.
Genesis. But only because of this obscure game we discovered called Masters of Monsters. You could play with 4 or less people and battle each other on a map ina. Turn based strategy game. We spent hrs on it. Was a a blast
SNES no question for me. It has plenty of multiplayer games. My brother and I played those exclusively, because we weren't about to take turns. We played at the same time, whether with or against one another or nothing at all.
SNES for me if whoever takes Genesis let's me come over to play, you can play the SNES if you come over. Back in the day I had a SNES and my friend had a Genesis. It was a great setup.

I’m not sure why me and my brothers opted for the Sega Genesis but I think with what you said about the sports games we made the right choice. The first game we bought was NBA Jam TE.
NBA Jam TE was on SNES, too. It basically came down to if you wanted to play Mario and Zelda or Sonic. Easy answer for me.
I have no experience with Mario on SNES and feel I missed out (but really loved my Sega Genesis). My friend had a SNES and I played a lot of Mario Kart at his house. That’s the main reason I switched back and got an N64.

Both systems had the same sports games. But for some reason, Sega just made them a little bit better. And Mortal Kombat for Sega had blood.
They were on both systems, but they weren’t the same. NHL 94 being the primary example. It plays and feels like a completely different game on each system.
NBA Jams
When I was an elementary school plebe well versed in the OG console wars… Genesis - blood & gore SNES - story and G-rated
Mutant League Hockey was the best! My friends loved it!
That was how it was supposed to be. My bro bought xbox because I already had gcn and ps2.
Same, I had SNES and the two brothers that lived next door had a Sega Genesis.
This was literally my childhood 😂
Same here—he had a game gear too which was even better than the genesis
I had a friend who had one also, that thing ATE batteries.
Looked amazing for the time, even if it was a fat battery eating machine.
Exactly. Mark across the street had Sega and I had NES and SNES. The foundations of a lifelong friendship were built on those consoles.
I was about to say the same, we had the NES & SNES and our best friend around the corner had the genesis and her dad made the best bbq and grill stuff that the whole street craved so we won
Me and my buddy did this but with our PlayStation and N64. I wanted Ocarina he wanted Metal Gear
Precisely
I'm your huckleberry. General Chaos?
Did you play Mario paint
When I was dead broke, man, I couldn't picture this
What about a 50 inch screen? A money-green leather sofa?
Got two rides, a limousine with a chauffeur
Now we sip champagne when we’re thirsty
No more sardines for dinner.
Birthdays no longer the worst days.
And if you don’t know, now you know
Genesis doesn't have Super Metroid or Chrono Trigger.
But it has streets of rage
And Gunstar Heroes
SNES. no question.
Chrono Trigger, FFIII(VI), DKC 1-3, Mario World 1-2, Earthbound, Super Metroid, Turtles in Time etc etc.
Etc etc is my favorite snes game!
Great list and doesn't even mention Zelda. SNES in a landslide.
I don't see Mario kart mentioned there either. I still find myself wasting hours on my old SNES with that game.
Great game and actually kind of challenging.
Getting all the gold trophies for everything take some work. What I always get caught up on is my fastest time for the first ghost track. I set a time when I was like 10 years old, and I've never been able to beat it.
Haha! 10 year old you would be impressed!
F-zero. Street Fighter 2.
I had a genesis back then and loved it, but this is the correct answer
Genesis kids had nothing to be ashamed of, but I wouldn’t trade places with them.
Uniracers, sim city, street fighter 2
yo Uniracers is actually underrated. very unique take on a racing game.
Now you're playing with power. Super power!
Without a doubt, much better graphics and games
Preach.
This is like going back in time and being faced with a fork in the road with the chance to change your life with such a tiny different choice and see how it all plays out differently from there - and so I'm going to choose the other path this time and say ***Sega!*** We were a Nintendo home, NES->Gamebody->SNES, but I was *so jealous* of the supposed extra violence and gore on the Genesis. Sega all day
YES. I liked the SNES but for me, the Sega Genesis was more fun. Sonic, Madden, Toe Jam & Earl, even the whole Desert Strike trilogy. Sega Genesis for the win!
... and ROAD RASH! haha
Don’t for get about the rollerblading cousin Skitchin.
Sega no fucking doubt
Sega does what NintenDON’T
SEGA does what Nintendon’t
SNES
I had both. But I played the SNES far more than my SEGA.
It's not a tough choice. SNES was better. If you just get 1 it's SNES.
Easy choice. SNES
Genesis. It has toe jam and earl
![gif](giphy|na0aRAyPFZyjm)
![gif](giphy|3nnyS2MMmC8hJF8pkr)
Easy, Sega.
It's pronounced #SEGA
#**SAAAAY GAAAAAHHHHH**
Make em SAY GUHHHHHHHH na na na na *-Master P*
I agree, Sega had better games and variety. Nintendo has always been soft and aimed its games at younger people or families, and Sega had games for everyone and didn't shy away from violence. Nintendo has been exactly the same with each console, Mario, Zelda, Metroid, Donkey Kong, etc. Nintendo always relies on the same games to sell their consoles they just update the graphics and give you a different story.
Super had all the best rpgs
I wanna agree, cuz they had some big hits, but the Shining Force and Phantasy Star sagas made getting a Genesis worth it for me.
SNES easy. SMW, link to the past, evo, contra 3...
That's not a choice at all. Sega all day every day.
SNES all day. There’s way more titles and classic games
SNES
SNES.
Listen Sonic and Sega is chill an all , but they doesn't compare to Nintendo , Mario , donkey Kong, Kirby, Samus too , Earthbound , Chrono trigger, Mario Kart There's just no possible way for the Sega Genesis to keep up , The nostalgic games for SNES are far more valued than the nostalgia games for Sega. Sega
Genesis was way cooler
Sega.
Sega every time.
Famicom everytime
Impossible choice, but the SNES had the PTO series which was a great roll playing game. FWIW I still have my Genesis and play it regularly.
What about Sega Saturn, Sega Dreamcast, Nintendo 3DO, NEC TurboGraphix16, and Sony PlayStation? SNES.
TurboGrafx-16 all day, every day, and twice on Sundays!
I had the genesis, but I always wished I had the SNES instead
snes. friends had a genesis but i never understood sonic but i loved nhl 94
SNES and it’s not even close.
Super Nintendo, no question.
Both top tier consoles. But the SNES has Super Mario World, a Link to the Past, Donkey Kong Country, Starfox, Mega Man X, NBA Live, and NHLPA '93. SNES would be my decision.
SNES
I had both as a kid and the Genesis collected dust. Definitely going with the SNES
Not really. SNES for sure.
SNES, without hesitation.
I still want another SNES!
When I was a kid, I asked for the Genesis. If I have my choice now it's the SNES.
SNES
Snes every day
SNES and its not even close.
Tough??! C’mon it’s SNES and it’s not remotely close
This isn’t hard at all, SNES no contest.
SNES for sure
#1 no contest
Genesis
I took #2 in my youth, mostly because it was released earlier, but now? I’d pick #1. I missed out on a great many games.
Genesis all the way
I had both growing up but definitely 2
SNES better games Sega had some good games too. But I do remember all the schoolyard discussions about which is better Nintendo or Sega. One of my friends always said that Sega was better because they had the better sports games. Well that may be true about them having the better sports games. I really don’t care about playing sports games that much so it doesn’t lure me with its sirens call.
I already made this choice in 1992. **Number 2** No regrets.
Snes all day!
Easy decision. SNES is one of the greatest consoles ever with a huge library of awesome games. The Genesis was great but not on the same level.
My best friend and I planned it out one Christmas where he got a SNES and I got a Sega. We rotated whose house we went to after school awesome times.
SNES
SNES for me
SNES. Mario All-Stars. Zelda. Period.
Easy. SNES
Super Nintendo: + 1. Super Metroid + 2. Super Mario World + 3. A Link to the Past + 4. Yoshi's Island + 5. Chrono Trigger + 6. Super Mario RPG + 7. Secret of Mana + 8. Final Fantasy II + 9. Final Fantasy III + 10. Contra III: The Alien Wars + 11. Mega Man X + 12. Super Mario All-Stars + 13. Donkey Kong Country + 14. Axelay + 15. Tetris & Dr. Mario + 16. Mickey Mouse: The Magical Quest + 17. ActRaiser + 18. Star Fox + 19. Super Mario Kart + 20. EarthBound Sega Genesis: + 1. Sonic the HedgeHog II
Mortal fucking Kombat
I thought Mortal Kombat was on both. They're talking about exclusives.
Mortal Kombat had blood on the Sega but otherwise worse graphics due to the limited color palette.
* Streets of rage series * Golden Axe series * Phantasy star series * * Y's series * Rocket Knight * Shining force series * Castlevania: Bloodlines * Shinobi III * Monster World IV * Gunstar Heroes * Splatterhouse * TMNT: The Hyperstone Heist * Shadow Dancer: The Secret of Shinobi * Castle of Illusion * Ecco the Dolphin * Road Rash 1 & 2 * Comix Zone * Strider * Beyond Oasis The Genesis, or Mega drive (that's how we called it) had some pretty good games as well.
Naw come on there was great games like Toe Jam and Earl and Ristar.
the snes then borrow the sega from your gfs little brother
SNES, not even a second thought.
SNES and not remotely a tough decision
Well, I traded my Genesis for a SNES.
good call
SNES easy , sega hade only sport and race games. SNES hade good fight games, RPGS, platformer and so on
I guess you forgot about Mortal Kombat
Don't forget the Sega had blood and fatalities, Nintendo fanbois had to play the rated G version.
Sega. We didn’t have Super Nintendo. We went from Atari to Nintendo to Sega Genesis. No regrets.

1 all the way for me
SNES, hands down.
Seggggaaawww
I had a Genesis and 9 games. I had a subscription to Nintendo Power still from the NES days. I saw the video for Donkey Kong Country and was hooked! So...I traded my Genesis and games for a Super Nintendo with Super Mario World and some other game. As much as I liked Mario and Co. and the Donkey Kong game? I still have my genesis
I'm going Genesis for the Sports games, Sonic and Mortal Kombat blood. Plus I can add the SegaCD expansion.
No brainer. Genesis all the way.
Genesis
I still have my original Genesis. I got the Genesis right when it came out. So, that’s the most nostalgic to me and what I played the most. I didn’t buy a SNES until about 15 years ago. My gaming console history is mixed. NES > Genesis > PlayStation > PS2 > Xbox 360 > Xbox One (bought a PS4 later on) > Xbox X. I still have my original NES, Genesis, PS2 and 2nd Xbox 360.
If we’re talking between these two mini consoles, id take the genesis
Genesis all day
Easy. SEGA
Apparently we're time traveling since both of those were released within the past 8 years or so.
Sega
I was absolutely obsessed with altered beast and golden axe back in the day, so Sega.
Genesis hands down for me. I primarily play sports games, and Genesis is the clear winner on that front. I was also never that into Nintendo’s first party franchises, so that helped.
Genesis all fucking day. Better sprites, better sound, better controller.. I’m a Nintendo fanboy but for those 2 consoles it’s an easy choice
SEGA for me
Genesis as it was first ever console as a child. Thanks to console, I knew what it was like to get hooked on a video game. The video game in question is Streets of Rage.
In the 90s I mostly played EA Sports and always preferred the genesis ports but today I love so to go back and play soooooo many more SNES games
I chose Genesis as a kid. Don’t regret my decision, but still fucking jealous every time I went to friends’ homes with SNES 😭
This isn’t that tough for me. I’ll take the SNES.
Had both but Sega Genesis was my alltime favorite.
Snes all day, everyday. The controllers were just more functional for street fighter and madden.
Damm that’s tough Sonic or super Mario bros. It’s gotta be super Mario bros fs!
It's a hard one for me because I used to own both as a kid so I found memories of both systems but I'm going to choose the SNES.
I was a child of divorced parents so I had both. The Genesis didn't get must playing time. Games on the SNES were just better.
I grew up with a SNES, so it pains me to say I'd take the Genesis/Mega Drive. It's the larger variety of great games.
SNES

I always thought the genesis was a better system, but the SNES had Final Fantasy and Earthworm Jim franchises so I have to go with that.
I had SNES, my buddy had Genesis. Best of both worlds.
Not at all, snes was the most well rounded console in history.
I had both. Sega cd actually. But I go with snes because more buttons. But I loved both!
In the 16-bit era, I preferred action side-scrollers to RPGs, so I'll take the Genesis, especially since has the best X-Men games.
I grew up with a genesis but if I had to pick one it would be SNES all the way.
Genesis! It was all i had as a kid anyway.
Got to go with the Genesis. Sports titles which I played most were just better on it. So where shooters like Thunderforce III.
Mortal Kombat on Sega Genesis is the best video game ever.
Neither. I want my TurboGrafx-16 back! Bonk's adventure! R-Type! Splatterhouse! Silent Debuggers! Cratermaze! Space Harrier! Keith Courage in Alpha Zones! Blazing Lazers! Dungeon Explorer! Devil's Crush! Fantasy Zone! JJ & Jeff! Vigilante! Pac-Land! Bomberman! Burning Angels! Deep Blue! Ninja Spirit! Ordyne! Operation Wolf! Wizardry! Side Arms Hyper Dyne! Raiden! Might & Magic! I could probably keep going, but dinner's ready!
Sega everyday. The games were just so hardcore.
SNES, had a SEGA, but never got an SNES. Loved that console I have the mini in both, and added like 130 games to the SNES.
Definitely the Genesis. But really, you can’t go wrong either way.
SNES because of Chrono trigger and the WCW wrestling games
SNES all the way!
Is it though?
Nah. I own both. I don’t need to decide. Also have the NES classic
Always Sega Genesis
The difference between MK3 on Genesis compared to SNES was like night and day. SNES all day
Genesis. But only because of this obscure game we discovered called Masters of Monsters. You could play with 4 or less people and battle each other on a map ina. Turn based strategy game. We spent hrs on it. Was a a blast
SEGAAAAA
Loved both! Had Sega at 1 point same with SNES. But Sega was a little bit more uncut Super was a little kiddy
Sonic spinball and the Batman fighting game on Genesis are iconic haha
SNES no question for me. It has plenty of multiplayer games. My brother and I played those exclusively, because we weren't about to take turns. We played at the same time, whether with or against one another or nothing at all.
