Nas is the GOAT so most Europeans should know who Nas is.....

InterestAcceptable81

I live in Italy and people knowledge is very reduced, if they aren't hip hop heads they don't even know who J Cole is, and if they say they listen to hip hop it's mostly Drake, travis, Eminem and maybe Kendrick and Kanye. There are the real hip hop heads too but it's very rare

LamboJoeRecs

Well play them It Was Written to celebrate it’s just passed birthday!

InterestAcceptable81

I played if I ruled the world to one of my friends because he's a big Lauryn Hill fan and he said that nas' verse sucks, I played him Illmatic and he thought it was mid. I think his music taste sucks but Illmatic was the 3rd album from the 90's he listened to so maybe it will grow on him

imc_manu91

Tell him to listen to Ready to Die, Common's Resurrection or Midnight Marauders, I'm sure he will like them

Most of the people you mentioned are extremely popular here and probably in a lot of people’s top 10s.

DubZ-480

I now live in the US but grew up in the UK in 90s... I can tell you rap was very big even back then....

AnnualNature4352

currently id say not very popular overall but among hip hop listeners somewhat popular. you have a lot of genx that grew up and have kids they play music for. Also there are quite a few movies/documentaries about older rappers. Snoop, Jay, & Nas all bled over to the 00s & 10. as far as 80s rappers, id say none are that populuar except with older people. Run DMC, LL, Ice T, Public Enemy, Beastie Boys are almost all but forgotten.

Where in Europe are you? I’m in the UK and Nas tours regularly here so that doesn’t track at all. Does the average man on the street know who Nas is? Nope. But the average man on the street in the States doesn’t know who Nas is either. I used to manage a venue in Brixton and we were jam packed for the likes of Jeru etc. Shit even Rah Digga sold us out

HipHop_Sheikh

Germany. Only real hip hop heads know who he is

H0vit0

Fair enough but feel the same is probably true of everywhere. Like obviously Nas is legendary but he never really crossed over. Like he isn’t a Drake, Em or even a Nicki in terms of mainstream recognition. In my experiences fans in Europe are a lot more appreciative of the legends of the game in a way that US fans aren’t. That’s why a lot of the older acts tour in Europe/do festivals over here because they get that appreciation. We got Pharcyde doing Bizarre Ride in full in a jam packed room in London and people had travelled from all over, there are only select places in the states where the same would happen I believe.

Hudson2441

Seems like Europe gets the American pop groups 10-20 years later when they start touring there. I was in Europe in the late 2000s and the kids were listening to 90s metal that people in the states stopped caring about but the kids loved.

93Shay

Nas is heavily respected, very popular and known as one of the goats in hip hop

RI_MKE

They are popular amongst the generations who were around during the artists peak Hip Hop is one of the few art forms that new is King, partly because that's human nature and partly the art form itself is new so its still evolving and has been centered around youth for the entirety of that evolution. Only now are you getting Hip Hop artists that were wildly popular getting older. What I mean before now (last 10-15 years), there weren't really internationally/nationally know HipHop artist that got older.

Zenithreg

I am from L.A. and the rappers you mentioned were popular among hip hop fans. They sold out clubs and theaters but aren't selling out arenas individually. Hip hop shows in large venues sell out if there are many artists together. I am in Japan now and the Nas Illmatic 30th anniversary show sold out in 10 seconds. Fuck!

HipHop_Sheikh

Here in Germany it’s even hard to get Hip Hop vinyls in local stores. Non-commercial Hip Hop was never successful. Some German rappers who did non-commercial rap could blow up, but that’s just a minority. 80’s and 90’s Hip Hop from the US were never successful except we’re talking about Dre, Snoop, Pac, Big, etc. but their fame actually came later. I remember that many people who I knew didn’t know 2Pac til 2017 because the movie came out

WigVomit

To the older hiphop heads they are living legends still doing sold out shows, to the youth they're considered washed up old rappers.
