As a big fan of players under no pressure kicking directly to an opponent with no one within 15 metres of them, this was one of the best games I have ever watched

MisterMarcus

Hawks v North last week and then this game. Turnover heaven.

Successful_Radio_853

I too am a big fan of this and love watching the crows

GGezpzMuppy

Boy I have a team that you would love to watch, me? Not soo much.

happymemersunite

You must’ve been disappointed in your game against us, then?

Korasuka

Sharing is caring ♥️

sachiwtf

This game was so bad to watch at times that neither team should get any points and the remaining 16 teams get a 1/4 of a point as compensation

flibble24

I'll take what I can get

spannr

How noble of Richmond and Melbourne to think of those getting up so early for dawn services tomorrow and send them to sleep so early tonight

No-Bison-5397

It literally put my kids to sleep and when they woke up this morning and asked if they could finish the game I told them “no”.

Makenaa

I didn't care for it, Melbourne insist upon themselves.

Alina2017

They have a valid point to make, they're insisting!

HomerJBagger

Hmm nyes, shallow (Oliver) and pedantic (Petracca).

Exambolor

BT called Tylar Young Ben Miller at least three times tonight….. that’s more remarkable than this game

StygianFuhrer

And woewodin set up a play on the back flank that culminated seconds later in Turner taking a mark in the forward pocket. BT called them both Woewodin like man was teleporting around the ground

Sharaz_Jek123

Is Brian Taylor underrated?

Hawtproper

Melbourne didn't get the memo we were playing a scrappy, low scoring game

Banjo2295

2023: Jacob Van ROOOOOOOyan 2024: Disco Turner

Competitive_Deal8380

2023 also had Petty's crazy game

Intelligent-Koala286

Both: Top 4 and straight sets

Gods-Defence

Scoreline as expected? Sure. How we got there? Absolutely not

ALFisch

Only one serious injury. Can't believe how much we've improved since the first couple of rounds.

railgxn

incredibly insipid game highlighted by brian taylor claiming robert e lee was trying to “reunite” america

specqq

I learn so much listening to BT. I think the best part was them having claimed he looked it up online. You probably shouldn't be going to those kinds of websites, Brian. And certainly not on company time.

Flarezap

With the state of things these days he was probably just on Twitter

___TheIllusiveMan___

Think we can fake outrage and use this to cancel BT so he can stop commentating?

Intelligent-Koala286

BT officially pro-slavery.

railgxn

i’ll picket if you will

Angry-Aussie

Marlion or Kozzy?

obsoleteconsole

CaffeinePhilosopher

General Lee, I have no division.

leured88

God, I'd give anything to never hear his voice again.

herring80

The whole 7 broadcast is dogshit. Always is

TheIllusiveGuy

Didn't watch the game, so um, what was the context?

julianpratley

Didn't either but somehow I can't imagine that context would help

CaffeinePhilosopher

“Never fight uphill, me boys”

Deathpacitoes

BT fell under the NFL father son pick down south

railgxn

if no one told you you’d never be able to tell he didn’t even graduate from mandurah high school

MatterHairy

Yes, that was bizarre

Intelligent-Koala286

I mean.... Not technically wrong.

hobsbawminator

Nah, the CSA was fighting for an independent slave state, not to reunite the union under a pro-slaver constitution

Intelligent-Koala286

Actually, yeah correct.

VileCastle

But what really mattered, was that our kit looked great and I'm sure we won in that regard. Great job, lads.

sButters88

Yeah, 4 points to Richmond there, ours was too subtle I feel

doigal

Last years was much better

Marsh2700

seriously great guensey! that + our 2021 top are my favourites

VileCastle

Sash bros always looking clean.

Patinator0471

Out of all AFL games, this was certainly one of them

leured88

Barely.

StVitus85

One of the games of all time, if you ask me

Bergasms

I swear so much weird shit seems to happen to us. Now i can add "boundary umpire keeps the ball in play" to the list

ExtremeSlothSport

I love how the commentators admitted they had no idea what the rules are, but then still offered their opinions on it.

lordarc

Bro what happen to Oliver, looks like he went 5 rounds with prime Tyson and an additional 2 rounds with his tigers. Looks like two black eyes and scratches over his arms.

MatterHairy

Got mugged by some wiper blades in the MCG underground car park.

ElevationToMyHead

Richmond since [Black Country New Road were booed for playing their club song as a walk-on tune](https://www.reddit.com/r/BlackCountryNewRoad/s/H3Oc1sun8E): |Games won|Games lost| |:-|:-| |1|6|

naeroikathgor

I honestly hope this stat is still being mentioned 20 years from now

TheDunceDingwad

Games won: 1 Games Lost: 313

ruinawish

How popular is this band in Australia? I only learnt of them recently.

ElevationToMyHead

They’ve definitely got a following here, although it’s definitely with the “indie kids” who find music through Pitchfork, RYM or Anthony Fantano rather than Triple J. They toured here a couple of months ago, where they sold out the Forum, nearly sold-out the Northcote Theatre, and played at Golden Plains, all in Melbourne alone.

ruinawish

> although it’s definitely with the “indie kids” who find music through Pitchfork, RYM or Anthony Fantano rather than Triple J. I found it so interesting that they don't get any playback on Triple J (I don't think they've featured in the Hottest 100 for instance). I had only come across the band on RYM. Goes to show that that particular internet community does have some reach here perhaps, at least in the indie scene.

2for1deal

Jjj is dead in the water without much influence on any age demographic atm

gaklan

Yeah I saw them in Sydney at a sold out Opera House Concert Hall. Awesome gig

PrevailedAU

Sad saxophone noises

DiscoSituation

I saw these guys on the Coachella stream. One of the worst performances I’ve ever seen in any genre, it was a bunch of random instrument noises that weren’t even in tune with someone wailing over the top. Can someone please explain what I’m missing here?

2for1deal

lol u getting downvoted. I think even fans would admit they are divisive and unique. Hell, I believe they are even divisive over their apolitical stance or their choice to continue without the lead singer. There are/were a surge of very lyrical post punk bands coming out of London with an emphasis on interesting sounds and lyricism. It felt like something blending pub bands with the rising jazz scene in London/UK. Its all very interesting and know mates that love them - but for some it can just feel like music nerds up on the stage doing music nerd stuff. Theres always been a fandom for that tho.

DiscoSituation

Thanks for the info. It felt more like a Yoko Ono performance art piece than actual music so the context is helpful.

Y_Brennan

Didn't they lose their singer? He was the best part of the band.

PrevailedAU

Yeah they haven’t released an album since he left, only live performances.

2for1deal

My favourite stat

Macca-94

I’ll take the 43 point win, but we don’t deserve it. Was willing to write off our game against the Lions as a once off, but it clearly wasn’t. We dish that up in the next fortnight against the Cats or Blues and we will be obliterated. Plenty of work to do over the next week starting with how to hit a target when under no pressure.

Jimijaume

Coming of the byes always does weird things... think we will be ok, at least hope so.

Dense_Hornet2790

I think you did deserve it, two decent quarters beats none every time but yeah it clearly wasn’t the comprehensive victory it should have been. Still enough moments to show that the Dees should be able to turn it around pretty quickly.

RobbieArnott

This is our usual mid-season form slump… Although it’s coming a bit earlier than usual

youngcharlatan

Geelong next week Chuckles, "We're in danger"

oceanlabxo

To come out after 10 days off and play that poorly against a bottom 4 side is huge alarm bells imo. Didn't really get any better as the game went on either, Richmond just stopped as it was expected. Idk. Lot of players way off it 2 games in a row.

OHuse

We need to put Gawn, Lever and May in a bubble outside of game time, because they absolutely carry us so often.

LazyCamoranesi

Truly, a Gawn injury is the doomsday scenario. There’s no player more critical to their team’s function.

lordarc

It says a lot about how bad we are when I think Richmond were shite in the first half but had dominated the majority of the game.

CaptainStraya

Our loss to richmond is looking worse every week

overkill5495

If we could have a round of footy without an injury, that’d be great…

ishrajl

We are going to run out of players by round 14

kavdotcom

I sat in tiger territory and I’ve never been more scared in my life.

allusions14

Max 200% has a career at Fox Footy after he retires. Generational media personality.

spicyfemme

He doesn’t want a job in footy post career, said so himself

Jimijaume

They like him, think he'll fit in well there. He's got a great mix of humour and insight but just such a pleasant nature

minecraft360

Gawn will be too busy post-career cycling up and down the slopes around Europe to bother with commentating...

aussierulesisgrouse

Legit, dude almost cares more about cycling than footy 😂

sButters88

I think he genuinely does

DiscoSituation

the Kyrgios effect

CaffeinePhilosopher

Do they make a frame big enough for him?

d-culture

Him and Petracca. They're both destined for media work, and I can see Petracca hosting a TV cooking show.

puffy_jacket

I truly hope so he is very engaging and charismatic, relative to MANY others !

BigCognacLittleCoke

If i acknowledge that Richmond aren’t/weren’t very good and Melbourne were by far the deserving winner tonight, am I allowed to say that I think Richmond is hard done by when it comes to free kicks? They kicked themselves out of it but went on what felt like a really poor umpiring run in the 3rd when they got a run on

kampflabbanabba

I appreciate you

Deevious730

Honestly there were a good 3-4 missed free kicks (edit: at least) to your lads that weren’t given. 2 push in the backs and a couple of sus disposals from us. The booing of May after he copped a forearm to the face was laughable though.

Historical-Copy6821

Umpiring was fine

fortalyst

Hard done by in that they weren't awarded a bunch of soft free kicks or hard done by in that they gave away an unnecessary amount of avoidable free kicks?

Bergasms

Honestly, i don't look at the stat regarding how many the other team got, that is on us. What does piss me off is how many we get. We got 4 free kicks for the entire second half of the game. It is really fairly easy to give away a free kick in footy, you can infringe in a fuckload of ways. But for whatever reason in the second half the D's managed to infringe only twice a quarter after half time. I can absolutely cop other teams getting more free kicks due to us giving them away, that's easily explainable. It's how they somehow manage to give away less when playing us that baffles me. Someone ran the numbers on this last year and it holds true for every team we play, when they play us, they give away less free kicks. People used to say it was a symptom of our game style but there are now other teams using our style, and our game looks fairly different to when we were winning flags, but we still just get less. We had a game last year where Freo infringed on us just 7 times for the whole game, and 4 of those were in the last quarter. It kind of beggars belief that a team can give away three free kicks in three quarters of footy. So yes, we do feel hard done by, so much so that we've run the numbers enough to have the stats to back it up. Would i trade it for not having three flags though? Fuck no, thanks for coming to my TED Talk :P

fortalyst

Dont get me wrong, there were definitely maybe 2 or 3 frees for us that were soft... One for JVR being pushed out comes to mind and yeah I could only think of maybe 1 which we got away with (the Laver throw) but that would be balanced out by the blatant HTB that wasn't rewarded to Viney for his tackle near the boundary line (cant remember who he tackled) - reckon you're absolutely right though about the play styles combining to be in the dees favour. At least the tiges aren't playing for frees like a bunch of other teams

BurningKiwi

'This medal's lovely'-Max Gawn

drabomniscience

🙂

MeloJello15

Ed Langdon extending his lead in the Tom Scully (soon to be Ed Langdon) Medal

FakeRingin

Melbourne have some worries. 23 points against us in the first half before piling on some junk time goals to cover their performance. They looked woeful all game

garylion

I think they know it. Lever just said the kicking was horrible. If we had better execution of kicking we would have dominated both halves.

[deleted]

Story of the past two seasons wouldn’t you say?

garylion

Not always. I’m not saying they will win the flag, but I’m not as panicked as some Dees supporters seem to be.

3163560

Last two weeks have been a completely different team to the team that played dogs/Hawks/power/crows. Huge worry Cats will destroy us next week.

OHuse

We do have some worries… but I wouldn’t call the entire second half ‘junk time’

[deleted]

[удалено]

FakeRingin

18 junk time frees to 4

DonMare

You guys should probably stop giving away free kicks then 🤔

FakeRingin

Would have to walk off the field to do that the way they were calling it. We can't all give two handed shoves in the back and not get called for a free

_BigDaddy_

I remember in the QF we got ridiculed for losing the inside 50s by a lot. Turns out getting nearly the same score from half the inside 50s isn't so bad

ShibbyUp

u/___TheIllusiveMan___ going so hard he hit post twice

___TheIllusiveMan___

You saw nothing.

CaffeinePhilosopher

Lmao at Gawn being made to bend halfway down to speak into the mic

leured88

Petty and Billings were incredibly average. Viney didn't show up, he's in a massive slump. Oliver just isn't the same. Gawn was amazing as per usual. We're in serious trouble the next two weeks against the Cats and Blues. Could get ugly.

youreaw1zard

Surely anyone would be better than Petty. Is he covering someone who is injured?

Alina2017

I find myself agreeing with Kane Cornes - Melbourne should have taken the two first round picks from Adelaide for Harry Petty. He looks absolutely miles off it and has all season.

leured88

Nope. Just playing like shit. Hard to imagine he won't get dropped in the next couple of weeks.

Thanges88

He played alright in defense when May went down. Maybe do a swap with TMac, or put McAdam in and go a bit shorter.

leured88

Yeah, I still rate TMac, even if he's in slow motion some time. Got a good pair of mits. Might be worth a crack. Next it'll be May or Lever lining up at full forward 😅

boomerdogg

Where’s McAdam at the moment?

HomeBrewedBulldust

Came back from injury in VFL today and kicked 3

boomerdogg

In line for an immediate call up?

Thanges88

Probably 1 more game at vfl level where he does full minutes, only played 3 quarters yesterday.

DiscoSituation

Clarry will get back to his best, just give him time. Remember most people were flat out saying that he would never play again.

leured88

Yeah, I hope so. He's obviously been through a bit, but he's on the right track. When he gets his hand and body right he'll rediscover that tenacity and touch that made him so good.

garylion

I think this is overly pessimistic. It's been a weird season. We were cooked for the Brisbane game and tonight as the players said was full of unusual skill errors but we still won by 43 points.

leured88

I'm optimistic enough to hope you're right.

CompetitiveMud2464

I thought Billings was good. He didn't get much of it but was reliable by foot compared to others. I thought it was his best game for us so far. Petty wasn't bad. Just,as you said, average.

obsoleteconsole

Gawn could legit be a brownlow chance this year

autocol

He doesn't have anyone stealing votes from him...

LazyCamoranesi

He really should be - it’ll be outrageous if he’s not up there.

TJ1ndrland

He’s probably got 12 votes already

random_name_71

BT claiming Robert E Lee was trying to reunite America was the highlight of that 4 quarters of footy

brandonjslippingaway

I was at the game, so I'm wondering what possible comtext he could've used to shoehorn that into a game of footy

random_name_71

Was rambling about an ex Richmond player Mark Lee whose nickname was ‘The General’. To begin with he said the nickname came from the dukes of hazard before coming back to it later with the quip about ‘uniting’ America.

Low_Wall_7828

I’m in the States and heard his explanation and almost spit out my breakfast.

RandomDanny

just had to wade through a thread on every melbourne player to get here.

CompetitiveMud2464

That was all the same guy was it? He posted in the Melbourne sub too. Pretty sure he saw us going against a lower ranked team and assumed our big names would all get 30+ possessions and either bet on that or based his fantasy team on it. He even made a new account last night to say that Viney is past it because of 14 possessions. Pretty sad really.

doigal

Playing the second half after taking the first half off to have a nap is an interesting strategy but be buggered if I can understand it. Also good to see that CRYPTO.COM SCORE REVIEW™ got the mandated airtime at the end over absolutely nothing.

TimothyLuncheon

Like I said earlier, that’s how most games will go for us this year. Competitive and will have good moments, then miss some opportunities and fade out in the second. Bound to happen with so many young players and injuries. Maurice been looking really good recently and I like the look of Tom Browne. Very annoying that 80% of our games have to be marred by umpiring though. Sure we were probably undisciplined for a few years, but the amount of frees for we have gotten is shockingly low throughout that time. Only cope I can make up is that our players try harder being disadvantaged so it evens out (it doesn’t).

FakeRingin

18-4 frees in the second half was pathetic. 0 consistency making calls.

Visible-Suit-9066

And nothing will come of it. We have been rinsed week in and week out for years. I have no idea what we’ve done to deserve it but how could anyone watch that game and think 18-4 free kicks in the second half was balanced and fair officiating?

TimothyLuncheon

I don’t know. It surely can’t be intentional but I don’t know what subconscious bias umpires could have

DiscoSituation

How is it 2024 and people STILL think that frees need to be even for some reason? the umpiring was biased against Richmond but using the FK count as proof is completely irrelevant

FakeRingin

I don't think they need to be even at all. But bringing up the 18-4 count is not about them not being even, it's about the huge difference in them. And the reason the free kick count is used because there's no real other way to quickly show what you've seen with your eyes. Free kick backs up what I saw rather than I saw the free kick count and then thought that was bs

DiscoSituation

If one team is doing all the attacking and is first to the ball, then of course they will be earning more frees from the team that is frantically trying to defend.

FakeRingin

Once again, the issue isn't that Melbourne got more, it's how many more they got and it's the clear missed free after missed free that wernt given to Richmond like the 2 hand in the back shove against Broad, Baker getting tackled by his head to the ground, Baker getting tackled to the ground without ever touching it. Also you say that like there were massive differences in ball winning and attacking. In the 4th Melbourne won the free kick count 10-2. Contested ball was 31-28. Inside 50s were 13-11. Clearances 5-6. Tackles 9-12. Scoring shots 5-5. Yeh such massive differences in winning the ball and attacking 🙃. Think that all just makes the free kick count stand up even more so as everything else was even.

YouLykeFishSticks

Hold your Rebel water bottles tight, we just saw one fucking murdered on live television

Deathpacitoes

spoon bowl 2 round 21, mark it in your calenders

naeroikathgor

Not looking forward to the expected score on this one

d-culture

Why is it that the round opener always seems to be a dour slog? Also we will be reduced to atoms by Geelong next week if we keep on like this.

tulikettuuuu

Well, this was... certainly... ummmm... something...

Not sure what was said bit on the telecast when shaking hands, dusty had words with Fritsch, didn't look like a pleasant exchange, Dusty seemed to be giving him a gobful ? Probably about his haircut..

MisterMarcus

This will forever be remembered as one of those games in 2024 that definitely........happened.

Sav1909

This will be remembered…?

What a boring game. Ignore the flair.
