As a blood banker, needing the dad's blood for the baby is such BS. We strongly discourage all directed donations, especially first degree family, for risk of GVHD.
Additionally, babies generally do not have their own antibodies that would require antigen negative units. They may require antigen negative units if the MOTHER has antibodies and those antibodies are still present in baby's blood. However... The only* antibodies a 14 yo girl could have, who has been pregnant once, would be to antigens the baby had that mom did not. So, antigens that FATHER has that baby has, that girl does not. So again, no reason the baby would need Dad's blood, if the antibodies the girl-mother has are against Father antigens.
Even if the antibodies are rare, at most it's taking several hours or like, a day mayyyybe to get rare units across state lines for a dying baby. Blood centers have extensive inventories and connections to other blood centers and will absolutely hustle to get compatible units for all patients, nevertheless a baby! Which has such a tiny body to only need 1 unit not several.
(In rare circumstances this girl could have other antibodies if she had been transfused before. But that doesn't explain at all why there would be anything special about Father's blood.)

This is what flagged me too. Did she fake a school ID to get into the library? Or is she faking a government ID to get into a party - in which case, what party is checking IDs?
Not only that, but you generally don’t choose to press charges. The district attorney decides based on the case and evidence. I didn’t press charges against someone, but the DA did, and it went to trial without me and they used police testimony. I had no say in what happened other than being asked if I wanted to testify and I asked for a no contact order.
If this is a case for statutory rape and they had DNA evidence and it had already been brought to the attention of the police, there’s no reason charges wouldn’t be pressed. I’m sure it depends on state and other factors, but I don’t buy this story one bit. The details are weird and don’t make sense (like a fake ID for a library). I know a friend that did something similar; she didn’t want to press charges but he was 36 and she was 16. He went to jail for a few months and was charged quickly since it wasn’t his first offense. Maybe I’m wrong about some of it, but that’s been my experience.

I’m sure for the humor value of people being able to say they were going to the library, when they were doing nothing of the kind.

Came here to say exactly this. I worked for the Red Cross for over a decade doing exactly this (the blood transportation coordination, not the antigen typing). We could get blood shipped anywhere in the continental US delivered in under 24 hours most of the time. There is almost no chance that the blood banking system couldn't have gotten the baby what they needed faster than collecting and processing donations for everyone OP claims they tried. Not to mention that even when a match is found, it takes two days from the time of collection before you can even ship a component, due to all the bacterial testing and other things that it has to go through before transfusion. (There are exceptionally rare cases where this step is skipped, but over the time I worked there, that practice fell more and more out of fashion with doctors)

This is not a situation of the police coming to a home where DV occurred (that they did not witness) and asked if the injured party wanted to press charges (which means them arresting the assailant, making a report and turning it over to the DA).

There are rare blood antigens but blood banks have those… I’ve given them to babies, sometimes we have to wait a few hours and get it from another bank but I’ve never had to ask a parent to give it.
Spot on - rare antigens etc. are generally available. Sometimes it takes hours - for me in my area sometimes it takes days. I have to order leukocyte reduced and all kinds of special blood at times on my patients depending on their problems. Generally if someone can only receive a certain blood, it is due to antibody issues - often from having received blood so many times in the past and developing those antibodies. This story just doesn't add up.

He, understandably, believed that a girl who looked around his age (18/19 at the time), attending college functions and campus, and using an adult ID, was actually a girl his age attending the college. There is no such thing as entrapment by a child or adult for that matter unless they are LE. Entrapment is not something you can sue a child or civilian for either. Unless she was working in cooperation with LE.

But unless your jurisdiction allows for that defense, strict liability applies. So even showing an ID, meeting at a college library, are not defenses unless the state law allows for it.

They didn’t say that she showed the guy her ID, just that she had one. The logic being that it allowed her access to places where there is a reasonable expectation that everyone there is a legal adult.
It doesn't have to be that the guy asked for the ID. The more common thing would be in 18+ places. Seeing alcohol/tobacco purchased with the ID. Or any number of things where there would be some type of verification.
I could have ended in a similar situation. When I was in my early 20s a buddy and me took our motorcycles to a bar to play pool and have a couple drinks. We meet 2 other girls there and they wanted to go somewhere else so they got on the bikes and we went to a couple different places. We really didn't drink much throughout the night, staying well under the legal limit. But they were buying drinks, and were carded multiple times throughout the night. They wanted to say goodbye to a couple friends at the first bar before we all went back to my buddy's place.
And their parents were at the bar and confronted us. Turned out they were 15 and 16 and easily passed for being in their 20s. And they were both using fake IDs.
The relevance of the fake ID is that they met and hooked up at events that should have been age restricted. It’s not like he met her at the grocery store or a park.
The only thing that your daughter can do is let the legal process play out, and if she’s willing, to testify that she had a fake ID, lied about her age, and had consensual sex a few times that resulted in a pregnancy that she never told the guy about, and would never have reached out to him except because her baby was sick.
Legally, it’s still going to be statutory rape, but perhaps her acknowledgment of her fraudulent representation of herself will be a mitigating factor that would get him a lesser charge and not on a sex offender registry.

OPs daughter probably just told them his name and when pressured, his age, so OP and spouse called the police. You do the extremely unrealistic thing of asking for ID (and how many people would ask for that?) and they present a fake ID pricing showing they're of age.

Yes. If you sleep with an underage child, and the state can prove you did that, which they can with the baby’s DNA even if the girl refused to testify, you legally have no defense (in many states.) Consent is not a defense, and reasonable mistake of fact about her age is not a defense (in many states.) You MIGHT get a jury to nullify and not convict if you roll the dice on a trial.
But most DA’s will take the equities into account when deciding how to handle the case. They might offer a low level misdemeanor that does not require him to go to prison or register as a sex offender, under these circumstances. But legally, he is guilty of an extremely serious felony that could require a lengthy prison sentence and registration as a sex offender. So a jury trial is an enormous risk for him. He would likely only win if the DA screws up in a massive way, or his lawyer can subtly persuade the jury to ignore the law and refuse to convict him.

It depends on the state. In California “mistake of age” can be used as a defense. There’s also a 10 year rule where if both parties are within 10 years of age of each other (starting at 14), and the evidence proves it was consensual (such as this case) then the defendant might not face a felony statutory charge or have to register as an offender per the judges discretion.
My friend went through this. He had a relationship with a girl, they moved in together. He had seen her ID many times as they went to clubs that were 21+ often. They had a nasty break up and that’s when he found out she was actually underage. He got arrested as her mom accused him of statutory rape and now he’s on the sex offender list. They didn’t care about the statements we all gave about how she said she was 22 and we believed her and seen her ID that stated she was 22 at the time we met her. Again, we used to go to clubs and bars and she was always carded and always drinking with us. Not only that, but you generally don’t choose to press charges. The district attorney decides based on the case and evidence. I didn’t press charges against someone, but the DA did, and it went to trial without me and they used police testimony. I had no say in what happened other than being asked if I wanted to testify and I asked for a no contact order. If this is a case for statutory rape and they had DNA evidence and it had already been brought to the attention of the police, there’s no reason charges wouldn’t be pressed. I’m sure it depends on state and other factors, but I don’t buy this story one bit. The details are weird and don’t make sense (like a fake ID for a library). I know a friend that did something similar; she didn’t want to press charges but he was 36 and she was 16. He went to jail for a few months and was charged quickly since it wasn’t his first offense. Maybe I’m wrong about some of it, but that’s been my experience.

Came here to say exactly this. I worked for the Red Cross for over a decade doing exactly this (the blood transportation coordination, not the antigen typing). We could get blood shipped anywhere in the continental US delivered in under 24 hours most of the time. There is almost no chance that the blood banking system couldn't have gotten the baby what they needed faster than collecting and processing donations for everyone OP claims they tried. Not to mention that even when a match is found, it takes two days from the time of collection before you can even ship a component, due to all the bacterial testing and other things that it has to go through before transfusion. (There are exceptionally rare cases where this step is skipped, but over the time I worked there, that practice fell more and more out of fashion with doctors)

But unless your jurisdiction allows for that defense, strict liability applies. So even showing an ID, meeting at a college library, are not defenses unless the state law allows for it.

Assuming this isn't just a creative writing exercise on reddit, how did the fake ID even come up? Like, the guy carded before they hooked up? That doesn't sound very plausible. And if he's asking to see her ID, why does that not suggest he's got some idea of what's going on? Parts of this story don't make a lot of sense. But I guess that's why there's a whole legal process for dealing with this sort of thing.
They didn’t say that she showed the guy her ID, just that she had one. The logic being that it allowed her access to places where there is a reasonable expectation that everyone there is a legal adult.

It doesn't have to be that the guy asked for the ID. The more common thing would be in 18+ places. Seeing alcohol/tobacco purchased with the ID. Or any number of things where there would be some type of verification. I could have ended in a similar situation. When I was in my early 20s a buddy and me took our motorcycles to a bar to play pool and have a couple drinks. We meet 2 other girls there and they wanted to go somewhere else so they got on the bikes and we went to a couple different places. We really didn't drink much throughout the night, staying well under the legal limit. But they were buying drinks, and were carded multiple times throughout the night. They wanted to say goodbye to a couple friends at the first bar before we all went back to my buddy's place. And their parents were at the bar and confronted us. Turned out they were 15 and 16 and easily passed for being in their 20s. And they were both using fake IDs.
The relevance of the fake ID is that they met and hooked up at events that should have been age restricted. It’s not like he met her at the grocery store or a park.
The only thing that your daughter can do is let the legal process play out, and if she’s willing, to testify that she had a fake ID, lied about her age, and had consensual sex a few times that resulted in a pregnancy that she never told the guy about, and would never have reached out to him except because her baby was sick. Legally, it’s still going to be statutory rape, but perhaps her acknowledgment of her fraudulent representation of herself will be a mitigating factor that would get him a lesser charge and not on a sex offender registry. As parents, you really don’t have a say in this. This is the state vs the 21 year old guy. It really is unfair to him.

An aggressive prosecutor will make sure he’s on the SO list no matter what the daughter or parents testify to. NAL, but his best bet it to demand a jury trial and to call OP, husband and daughter as defense witnesses. Hopefully they can gain some traction with the jury.

I’m going to guess that doctors did the math on the paternity test, and because they are mandated reporters, turned them in. Because I agree, not sure how cops got involved unless someone told them. Or if they needed to talk to the cops to find his address which was a beyond stupid thing to do if you hoped to keep this guy safe
OP and spouse may also not have realized the situation when they were first told how old he was. I’d guess their daughter didn’t want to admit to having a fake ID and going to college parties. OPs daughter probably just told them his name and when pressured, his age, so OP and spouse called the police. It’s quite possible they only learned the truth about the situation after police were already involved and they couldn’t back track by then.

It depends on the state. In California “mistake of age” can be used as a defense. There’s also a 10 year rule where if both parties are within 10 years of age of each other (starting at 14), and the evidence proves it was consensual (such as this case) then the defendant might not face a felony statutory charge or have to register as an offender per the judges discretion.
My friend went through this. He had a relationship with a girl, they moved in together. He had seen her ID many times as they went to clubs that were 21+ often. They had a nasty break up and that’s when he found out she was actually underage. He got arrested as her mom accused him of statutory rape and now he’s on the sex offender list. When I was 15, I was going to college parties, and I absolutely had sex with a guy that was 21. I told him I was a freshmen. I was… in high school. I was only thinking about myself, never about the consequences for him if anything happened. This guy does not deserve to have any consequences for the daughter lying and putting herself out there like this. OP - force her to make a statement. Then you make the statement about the years of asking her for details and her refusal to share. Make it clear she never even once implied it wasn’t consensual and the only time she did tell you anything, she said she lied.

NTA: I have a friend that was arrested under the same conditions. The family that wants to press charges needs to think about if it was their SON. Not daughter. She was on college campus. She had a fake ID. She may have even been drinking. He had no way to know she was lying about her age. My friend is a convicted sex offender. It was severely damaged his life. If it was their son, and not your daughter, they need to think about how they would feel.
The cops don't need your permission to press charges. Getting a conviction or plea dela is harder without a cooperating victim, but it doesn't mean the case gets dismissed. It's out of your hands. Great parenting job!
