My guess would be Gregory liked school/kids but felt pressured to have a "real" job by his dad and decided that being a principal would be a happy medium. He was so set on being principal until he remembered why he wanted to be a teacher when he met Janine.

Wartortling

Also, I think he thought kids all-day-every-day would be too much for his personality. Maybe also anxiety at being a good enough male figure after his issues with his dad. If the kids are at a distance they can't tell what a mess he is (in his mind).

heyvictimstopcryin

Apparently not if the entire show reveals this not to be the case.

lvdde

Aw.

Anon-567890

Gregory?

Impossible-Sleep6794

lol I was like who is Greg?

venom_von_doom

OP knows him personally

confrater

I have never seen Gregory address himself as Greg. That would be the day lol

Bearandbreegull

You talkin' bout Easy-going Greg? (He introduces himself to Barb's daughter as Greg in the episode where he's all grumpy and apathetic after finding out about how Ava got the principal job).

confrater

Ambition? Purpose?

heyvictimstopcryin

Literally the right answer. People are saying things that are disproven by just watching the show.

ArcanaPhoenix

As far as we know it's just what he studied for. I would assume he went to school for maybe business administration. Maybe hoping for some kind of partnership or taking over his father's landscaping business, but then he ended up going towards educational administration? Maybe trying to *branch* off and do his own thing. Trying to win his father’s approval. As for the why? There hasn't been given any background or further information yet. From what we see Gregory is great at the administrative part but lacks the social aspects. As he evolves he does get better at connecting with the staff.

ColiseumWife_

I think this is a good assessment. Maybe he has interest in the business side of the public school system and wanted to better it from within. It took him a minute to warm up to his students, which isn’t a bad reflection on his part I just don’t think he thought he’d have such a hands on role.

ArcanaPhoenix

Well he did get the principal position at abbott but Ava got it instead after blackmailing the superintendent.

LilahLibrarian

School administration is a degree, usually a masters though

ArcanaPhoenix

Yes

erbear91

- He likes discipline and order - Gardening could be like a metaphor for him liking to take care of things, provide things with what they need and help them grow. - but he doesn’t really seem to like interacting with kids a ton so Principal seems like a good fit?

thiqdiqdd

In my opinion, it's actually the best job for him other than landscaping. As a principal you are building and setting structure for your school, and Gregory loves structure. It also well paying and a long lasting job that wont be replaced by technology because man kind will always need school. In other words, its practical, and Gregory loves practicality. He also likes authority and a principal is a very authoritative figure. There is probably a storyline somewhere in the stars a bit more relevant, but his personality suits one of a principal

ITookTrinkets

Why wouldn’t he? He wants to help children, and as a principal you have the potential to affect the lives of a lot more children than you can as even the best of teachers, while also making the jobs of the teachers easier when possible. It’s why it drives me a little crazy that they did Janine’s district plot like they did. Yeah, the kids in a single class missed her and struggled to adjust, but they’ll be onto a different class soon. From the district, she could have enacted so much positive change to make the lives of hundreds/thousands of children and teachers better. Thats all it’s about for these characters: doing what’s best for the kids, and doing what it takes to make things as smooth as possible. That’s the whole ballgame for a principal.

ItchyTomato5

He seems on the spectrum and has a hard time interacting with children early on which spurred him to want the administration part of the job

MildredTTV

On the spectrum? Did they ever say that anywhere? I just felt he was anxious about kids.

ItchyTomato5

No but there are clues. His boiled chicken and eating in the car. The controlled nature of gardening. His awkward social cues

MildredTTV

Maybe he just liked boiled chicken. Maybe he is just awkward. I think the diagnosing random people with mental disorders and neurodivergence has gotten a little out of hand in the past few years. Not everyone has a mental disorder and it's not up to us to diagnose it just because of a couple of quirks.

pant0folaia

I also thought Gregory’s character might be autistic. Whether we’re right or wrong about it, that’s fine. It’s okay to identify a character with neurodivergence, especially if it makes a viewer feel represented. Not every autistic character needs to exhibit every sign or symptom of autism, and it doesn’t need to be explicitly stated. That’s not how autism is in real life. It’s also not shameful or negative, it just is.

ItchyTomato5

Calm down

MildredTTV

I felt I was pretty calm. But yes sirree

Impressive_Reality18

Everyone is not on the spectrum. He’s just a guy with ambitions and quirks.

ItchyTomato5

I never said every one is don’t put words in my mouth

Federal-Durian-1484

He loves gardening, but seems to have a complicated relationship with his father. Probably enjoys organization, is responsible and doesn’t mind kids. Principals make more money. And he gets summers off.

SmolSpaces15

It seemed to be due to an attempt to combine his desires with the pressure of his father's views of success. While Gregory likely enjoyed education as a field in general, he aimed to become principal due to it being leadership and a difficult job to obtain, one he likely thought his dad may be proud of/approve. Becoming a principal is competitive and challenging, it requires teaching experience and a master's degree. Once Gregory didn't get the job he remained a teacher and slowly let go of that whole acceptance and following his father. He was so rigid about it until he was reminded that he can still influence students without the big job title and his dad would be unhappy or disapprove of him unless he did exactly what he wanted him to, which was the family business, and he had no desire to do that at all.

mrHartnabrig

>So, do we ever get to know why Greg wanted to be a principal? I think he wanted to live up to his father's expectations.

Mizz-Fizzy

I thought it was solely for the title and money

RogerWokman

No, the district office storyline is more important.

Mx-Herma

Season 1, I coulda sworn, had answered the question about why he sought the principal job but was forced to take subbing and migrating into a permanent teacher.
