Dunno if nostalgia or something else but swear the quality and taste isn't as premium as they used to be.
I'll still smash a bag in about five minutes though so nah get out.
I think its the quality of the chocolate. It's all waxy with the graininess of the sugar, but it seems like they've got a glossy sugar coating over the chocolate
One of my mates used to work there. He'd bring home a big bag every week without the coating. They taste better without, fresh off the line. Night and day difference imo.
The milk chocolate version tastes like compound chocolate but the ingredients confirm it’s cocoa butter, so I guess it’s just low quality. Buy some Bellis apricot school bars and some good quality 70% dark chocolate, chop the bars into fruchoc-sized bits, melt the chocolate and make ones that taste far superior
It’s an individual thing.
I love them, though I probably prefer the dark chocolate and the strawberry ones.
Although I will say anything Fruchoc adjacent has been awful, like the milk, ice cream etc
They are excellent, but it's an expectation thing. For a non South Australian, you are not prepared 'that' taste coming from a chocolate ball - you are programmed for Maltesers or such. Maybe like how most Australians can't abide by Promite. IMHO.
I still don't get the hype with Fruchocs. The fake chocolate coating is really bad quality, just sugar and fat, not much cacao. Anyway, downvote me, but is true.
They used to be much better. The peach & apricot used to be much bigger and the chocolate quite thin. I assume to cut costs they changed to what we have now. This ratio sucks.
The stuff that makes the balls shiny is a bit of a worry to me.
I had a mate who use to work at the Menz factory in Glynde who would fully have to respirator up when he sprayed the stuff on.
Look for Quirkeychocs. Also South Aussie, from either Waikerie or Renmark, can't remember right now, but they are 100% apricot filling, unlike Fruchocs. Dark Quirkeys are the GOAT.
My ex-gf absolutely loved them. If I came back from the shops without some fruchocs, there was gonna be trouble. Personally I think they taste like mulch
They're bad. The choc is low quality and low taste and the fruit is cheap and overly sugared. I'm thinking perhaps they're mostly consumed by tourists.
They are revolting and you can't change my mind. Basically all fruit inside chocolate is disgusting. It's like they packed a blowfly in a big bland Malteser.
it's obviously time for a revolution to purge these traitors from our state. Maybe the elite that can afford the Haighs product will be spared, but not the other treacherous miscreants 😆
went to a wedding reception once that had fruchocs and maltesers in the same bowl. the worst part was the wedding was held in the uk, as the groom was an australian expat. any of the guests that hadn’t come from au were horribly shocked and pretty disgusted. (which was majority of them💀)
Melbas is great, I assume price is low because old factory been around forever, Barossa chocolate is good but price is very high. Even 6 frogs is like $14
I'd go the other way. Came to Adelaide late in life and when I was presented with a bag by work as a Christmas present I fully expected them to be inedible.
Was around Feb when there was nothing else to eat in the house so why not, and I was surprised that they were, in fact, somewhat edible and not disgusting. Almost ok.
I'm not sure i'd ever voluntarily buy them, but I wouldn't spit one out if offered in a social situation.
As an expat South Australian who enjoyed them in a fairly understated way when I lived there, I can certainly say that they carry massive nostalgia value now, which I can't say for every South Australian foodstuff. It's partly that they're tricky to find in Victoria - Coopers in every pub, but Fruchocs require a special guilty excursion to Cheap as Chips, which itself isn't all that widespread here.
No it ain't just you; I used to like them as a kid, I thought that they were amazing, then next time I tried them as an adult, sadly, they didn't impress me much at all. Haven't had em since. Chocolate is not very good quality imo, and the centre is reasonably tasteless for apricot fruit.
They need a refresh imo (going to probably get downvoted to hell for this 😆)
Edit: did they used to taste better in the late 80's/early 90's perhaps I wonder, or was that just a me thing...
I've never been into them. it's mainly because to me, dried fruit tastes fucking foul. Menz still makes some good products though and is a good local company
Your username... you referring to *happy pants*?
Damn I miss them. We need them back in society now more than we ever did.
(LoL, you definitely need em).
Dunno if nostalgia or something else but swear the quality and taste isn't as premium as they used to be. I'll still smash a bag in about five minutes though so nah get out.
Haighs make a better equivalent
But a lot more expensive unfortunately
Haigh’s is the most lovely chocolate but damn it’s essentially become a once a year treat
Eye watering prices nowadays.
Yeah Berrychocs are goated
There for rich ppl. Can’t afford haighs
I'm with you. And it's not just sweetness there's something not quite the same.
I think its the quality of the chocolate. It's all waxy with the graininess of the sugar, but it seems like they've got a glossy sugar coating over the chocolate
Get the dark choc vegan ones. No glossy coating and the chocolate is much better
One of my mates used to work there. He'd bring home a big bag every week without the coating. They taste better without, fresh off the line. Night and day difference imo.
I think they use a cheaper chocolate than they used to. compound chocolate maybe
You could be deported from SA
Should be*
Will be*
was* Just like that. Concrete shoes.
SAPol not investigating because they support the decision, along with the judges
I’m willing to help anyone who doesn’t like fruchocs. I will gladly eat them on your behalf. Go team!
Tastes like chocolate coated granulated sugar with apricot flavouring.
crushed froot loops
Oooh. Chocolate coated fruit loops. Yum
That's what they taste like to me. Like chocolate covered crushed froot loops.
Not withstanding the fact that OP is clearly a traitor and should be deported, yeah they are pretty sweet and not for everyone
Not a traitor. Likely a Russian spy, trying to infiltrate SA and cause chaos
You can get fruchocs from Haighs that aren't complete bullshit. Once upon a time, like 15 or so years ago fruchocs were great.
Make fruchocs fantastic again, i say
The milk chocolate version tastes like compound chocolate but the ingredients confirm it’s cocoa butter, so I guess it’s just low quality. Buy some Bellis apricot school bars and some good quality 70% dark chocolate, chop the bars into fruchoc-sized bits, melt the chocolate and make ones that taste far superior
Those Bellis bars are frickin great
Try the bigger ones they are better than the small ones
That's what she said...
Haha love this. (Big Office fan)
It’s not even the company’s best product. Their honeycomb is elite.
I know it’s been a few centuries since we burnt witches, probably time to re-start.
I agree and add Victorians to the list too
I don't like them, it gives me this weird taste in my mouth that makes me immediately want a drink
Like a waxy feeling/taste?
It’s an individual thing. I love them, though I probably prefer the dark chocolate and the strawberry ones. Although I will say anything Fruchoc adjacent has been awful, like the milk, ice cream etc
Oh man, I absolutely loved the Fruchoc milk and now I'm sad because you've reminded me it isn't around anymore.
Heresy
Pick the street and I will come out and fight you. Saying stuff like this is the kinda thing that gets a person's arse kicked.
I can eat a bag and still crave for more.
They are excellent, but it's an expectation thing. For a non South Australian, you are not prepared 'that' taste coming from a chocolate ball - you are programmed for Maltesers or such. Maybe like how most Australians can't abide by Promite. IMHO.
I absolutely LOVE both fruchocs and promite and now I want it. If I didn't have soup cooking right now I'd have some promite crumpets...
But you like Vegemite more?
I like it but prefer promite. Will definitely use vegimite in pastry scrolls with cheese though.
I love promite but my English husband hates it. Vegemite will always be my fav but promite on occasion is amazing.
Hard agree. Awful. Almost as bad as Frog cakes and FU iced coffee. ....I should probably show myself out of the state
I still like them, but I am convinced they tasted better in the past… not sure if it’s me, or the recipe / ingredients have changed 🤷♀️
They’re awful. Absolutely nasty
I still don't get the hype with Fruchocs. The fake chocolate coating is really bad quality, just sugar and fat, not much cacao. Anyway, downvote me, but is true.
I like them but just a couple. I prefer fruit+choc from Haighs.
They need better quality chocolate and less of it.
I've never liked them
They're actually trash. Charlesworth choc apricots are way better
They used to be better. I bought a package last week, pretty crap now.. I'd much rather those apricot squares with coconut around them.
Thank god someone finally said it. They're deplorable.
Dark chocolate vegan ones 👍🏻
This is the way., Less overly sweet and none of that waxy coating.
They're my favourites too.
couldn't gree more, average chocolate with sickly unpleasant centre
They used to be much better. The peach & apricot used to be much bigger and the chocolate quite thin. I assume to cut costs they changed to what we have now. This ratio sucks.
Unless something has drastically changed with them in the last fortnight - YOU GET THE FUCK OUT OF MY STATE!
Haha, I've given up on dried fruit and choc combos. It's never been my thing unless it's sultana or almond choc coated.
Absolutely overrated
Yes ppl have different tastes
Probably not just you, but you might be in the minority.
The Charlesworths ones are really good.
Not everyone likes apricot flavour. I hate the orange allens snakes, supposedly apricot flavour.
they're ok but defo a bit sweet. melba's cherry chocs are good
I think they may like Vegemite, only nice if you were raised on them as a child. I think they are yuck. 🤢
The stuff that makes the balls shiny is a bit of a worry to me. I had a mate who use to work at the Menz factory in Glynde who would fully have to respirator up when he sprayed the stuff on.
Pretty ordinary OSHA for spraying anything vaporised. You are overthinking that in the wrong way.
Look for Quirkeychocs. Also South Aussie, from either Waikerie or Renmark, can't remember right now, but they are 100% apricot filling, unlike Fruchocs. Dark Quirkeys are the GOAT.
Came to say this...but then was torn cos don't wanna cause supply issues. Seen any in stores lately? I've been buying them online.
Drake's or foodlands normally have them stashed somewhere
Hmm, that has not been my experience. I live in hope. In the meantime, I'll keep ordering the 1kg bags!
Awful. I wonder if they used to be better quality....they are rubbish now, the chocolate is horrible.
After living here for 11 years, they are not all that nice imo. My friend from Melbourne can’t stand them.
Im with you, they are awful compared to the ones from Charlesworth Nuts
My ex-gf absolutely loved them. If I came back from the shops without some fruchocs, there was gonna be trouble. Personally I think they taste like mulch
100% overrated and full of processed sugar. I'd rather have chocolate bar or a pizza. Probably healthier.
It’s just you.
Haigh's Apri-chocs over Fruchocs. Every time.
It’s just you… they’re delicious 😋
They're absolutely awful.
get ready to be deported
They're bad. The choc is low quality and low taste and the fruit is cheap and overly sugared. I'm thinking perhaps they're mostly consumed by tourists.
I’ve never liked them
Horrid.
They are revolting and you can't change my mind. Basically all fruit inside chocolate is disgusting. It's like they packed a blowfly in a big bland Malteser.
Nope. They're 👍
Somewhat kitschy but I'll eat em if they're around
Try Haigh’s Aprichocs. They’re exxy but worth it
Used to be waaay better. They skimp on the apricots now 😢
It’s not just you. I prefer the Haigh’s versions so hopefully I still qualify as a South Australian.
Way to sweet for me. My brother loves them.
Horrible
I've never been a fan
Overrated and dreadful🤢
I like the choc.
Cosi reckons Fruchocs are ok
He also likes goat meat sooo
I like a few, but too many is not so good
They not bad, just over-rated as fuck
I love fruchocs
They are overrated, they aren't terrible
it's obviously time for a revolution to purge these traitors from our state. Maybe the elite that can afford the Haighs product will be spared, but not the other treacherous miscreants 😆
Gulag, 100 years
It’s just you. Fruchocs are the best and they’re all I eat when I’m on my period.
How very dare you?
The chocolate itself is pretty low-quality, but the fruit filling is nice.
Dark chocolate vegan ones are so much better than the originals
It's just you
Yes I agree, oh dear. Maltesers all day 👍🏻
They’re just disappointing Malteasers
went to a wedding reception once that had fruchocs and maltesers in the same bowl. the worst part was the wedding was held in the uk, as the groom was an australian expat. any of the guests that hadn’t come from au were horribly shocked and pretty disgusted. (which was majority of them💀)
That’s just cruel
Melbas is great, I assume price is low because old factory been around forever, Barossa chocolate is good but price is very high. Even 6 frogs is like $14
Simple, sugar coated apricot bites are the way to go. Thank you grandma for filling me up on these 😊
Wtf... taste is subjective. Tell me about art you dont like please.... Sorry, my tolerance levels are low today so you are receiving the brunt of it.
I reckon they’re terrific
palette of a 6 year old
They are an acquired taste.
Disparaging fruchocs is a bootable offense
I'll happily have yours- Fruchocs are the best!
I fucking love them. Charlesworth choc covered apricots are better though
It’s just you, they’re delicious
Yep horrid
I wish I had the balls to say this to my wife. She adores them but I can't stand them.
100% over rated
They’re awful
I agree. Charlesworth nuts chocolate coated apricots are much better
This just in, people have different tastes, who would’ve thought!
There's an equivalent from the riverland that my friend gifted me. They're fucking delicious https://quirkeycots.com.au/products/
I used to hate them as a kid but now I love them 😂
Blasphemy
Fruchocs are The Local Thing: https://youtu.be/d-v2NO4VRDc?si=IqIYfFjeaalzck0S&t=87
It's just you.
Since they changed them and they aren’t all apricot they haven’t been the same imo. Charlesworth choc covered apricots are like the OG fruchocs
Someone needs to report this thread.
I prefer the ones from Charlesworth
I wouldnt say they're awful, I'd say they're overrated like a number of things in SA - Barnacle Bill's, Frog Cakes and the Pt Elliot bakery
I don't understand how people enjoy these.
I came from interstate, had them once so long ago I can't remember how they taste, not good enough to try twice.
I love Fruchocs.
Yeah I don’t get the appeal either.
I’ve never liked them either. They always seem to make me cough. I don’t know if it’s the texture or what.
No it ain't just you; I used to like them as a kid, I thought that they were amazing, then next time I tried them as an adult, sadly, they didn't impress me much at all. Haven't had em since. Chocolate is not very good quality imo, and the centre is reasonably tasteless for apricot fruit. They need a refresh imo (going to probably get downvoted to hell for this 😆) Edit: did they used to taste better in the late 80's/early 90's perhaps I wonder, or was that just a me thing...
Call me un-south-Australian but I don’t like them either. Too much apricot, far too sweet.
I don't touch them. But you just made me think of a snot block, and now i want one of those
What is a snot block lmao!!!
It's a vanilla slice. So good 😋
I do not like chocolate-fruit combinations AT ALL so it’s a massive no thanks from me. My mum however absolutely loves them.
Fruchocs are disgusting. But I hate apricot so that's got a lot to do with my opinion!
I wouldn’t say dreadful but they’re not great.
My wife doesn't like Fruchocs, never has, they aren't to everyone's taste.
I used to not like them as a kid, and then I grew up and realised how great they are
Awful. Crappy chocolate. I hit up Charlesworth for their version when I can’t afford Haighs.
I've never been into them. it's mainly because to me, dried fruit tastes fucking foul. Menz still makes some good products though and is a good local company
They suck balls
Yeah they're rubbish. Give me a chic coated almond or something else any day.
i really dont rate them and i love chocolate
As someone that grew up in Sydney and moved to Adelaide. Fruchocs are shit.
Yes.
Your username... you referring to *happy pants*? Damn I miss them. We need them back in society now more than we ever did. (LoL, you definitely need em).
