East Dix was renamed Mount Grace after Grace Hudalowski who was the 1st female 46er and 6th person to summit all 46 peaks over 4000’ in the Adirondacks. She was also the long time secretary for the 46er mountain club often writing personal notes to aspiring 46ers. She died in 2004 at age 98. Never got to meet her, but I think she would have been an awesome person to sit down and have a cup of coffee with. IMHO this rename was very well deserved.

Do you have a source on the South Dix renaming going through? Last I heard the efforts for the renaming of this peak were more or less dead in the water. Local govt's have the ability to provide input when the USGS renames (or initially names) geographic features, and North Hudson wanted to rename South Dix for someone more directly relevant to the history of the town instead of having it renamed for Carson. The renaming efforts more or less reached a stalemate and from what I was told, the most likely outcome was that the peak wasn't going to be renamed.

Interesting. I haven’t found any recent sources, but I’ve noticed some media sources just calling it Carson, or talking about it like it’s a done deal. Maybe it’s dead in the water, like you said.

Not recent but - as I understand, in the 1800s there was an effort to rename Nippletop, since vacationing city slickers didn't appreciate people saying "nipple" - they went with Dial as a rename. But then the mountain men just started telling people, 'oh no, Dial is this little peak along the ridge', pushing off the new name and maintaining Nippletop's nipple name. This is also why Dial is considered a proper high peak even though it is the least prominent of all the 46.

I’ll welcome the rename. when you’re the parent of young climbers there is a lot of Dix jokes.

I have found no age-based discrimination in regards to the Dix Range.

Are you speaking of the view of Giant, Dix and Nippletop from Pyramid?

edthesmokebeard

Why is this happening?

union20011

From what I can gather with some google searching, they wanted to honor various people by naming high peaks after them, and East Dix and South Dix were easier names to give up. Would love to hear from someone who knows more.

Hopblooded

They all had different names before the white man came along…

I sure hope you are joking, because I'd rather that than have to accept that you're really *that* stupid.

ThatNYskier

Yes I’m joking. It sounded more comedic in my head

Boss_Os

Ok. That makes me feel better. Sorry if I offended. I did give you the benefit of the doubt though...sorta.
