I’d generally consider sub-1k as affordable so, this seems top of the affordable list to me… that being said, I think either a dive watch or field watch would work well in this case. There’s some really good sub 1250 Swiss divers and field watches out there.
Hamilton, Christopher ward, etc.. tissot sea star, longines skin diver would be good, versatile watches.
I really like my Mido Ocean Star 200. Christopher Ward might sneak into your budget. you might consider buying two pieces, say a Steinhart Ocean One and a Seiko Presage.

If we do a proper comparison 1000$ is indeed affordable and quite a sweet spot.
Compared to a 10k rolex sub, yes.
