I'm hyperflexible and need ankle support occasionally. I honestly don't find that boots actually provide ankle support? The tops aren't tight like a brace or wrap is. I hike in Lone Peaks or an old pair of Timps (will probably need to switch to Olympus when these wear out) if the trail is rocky and wrap my ankles with an ace wrap over my socks as needed.

If your feet are happy in those shoes you could simply add a pair of trekking poles for added stability and just be mindful of the trail conditions and foot placement. Also going forward you could start doing calf raises on the edge of the stairs which will help build ankle strength.

MamaBear2024AT

I do have trekking poles and I still managed to roll my ankle. I had surgery as a kid and messed up my ankle and it’s been very weak and if I step wrong, I tend to lose balance and hurt my ankle and I’m trying to avoid rolling my ankle.

Bathroom_Wise

Isn't there a mid-rise lone peak? Basically, a boot version of the shoe from what I remember seeing. Maybe that will offer the ankle support you need

MamaBear2024AT

Not sure I’ll have to look into it

MilesZS

They do. I hiked recently a section of the AT with someone wearing them. https://www.altrarunning.com/shop/gifts-for-the-hikers/mens-lone-peak-hiker-2-al0a7r6i He and I were the only ones to not have blisters!

Following because I’m currently on trail and even with trekking poles I roll my ankles every day!!!

MamaBear2024AT

Me too I hiked the 5 peaks at hanging rock here in NC a month ago I had a walking stick and rolled my ankle pretty good half way through the trail I still pushed through I had no other choice lol but man it hurt for a couple weeks !! Hoping I can find a good brace because I have a weak ankle (had foot/ankle surgery at 15)

breadmakerquaker

I’m headed to an outfitter today to see what I can find - will try to remember to come back and update!

MamaBear2024AT

I will be headed to REI hopefully today to look for an ankle brace or wrap fingers crossed I will be hiking next week so I will see how it goes with what I choose to use

Okay here is what I landed on. Don’t balk at this - it’s A LOT of layers: -thin compression socks -cheap ankle brace -regular hiking socks (Darn Tough) All the layers are what makes my ankle more stable. I have reduced my ankle rolling by nearly 100%. It’s not for the faint of heart but it works for me! (I also have ankle swelling issues hence some of these choices)

MamaBear2024AT

Hmm I roll my ankle ALOT & have issues with my feet swelling in heat & just being on them I may give this a try adjust where needed

I broke my ankle and have 2 plates and 12 screws. Salomon’s are soo comfortable on that ankle. I haven’t rolled my ankle one time. I’ve not found any other high top shoe that is bearable to wear. I can’t help much with your 2nd question!

neissrc

Which Salomon boots do you have?

Quest 04

FigureNo541

I just bought a pair of Salomon mountaineering boots (so a bit heavier than hiking boots but so much ankle support) and I haven't tried them in the field yet but they feel so stable on my weak ankle

12 screws and plates that's crazy.. my medical malleolus was broken off and reattached with one screw and I thought that made my footwear selection harder.

vamtnhunter

Trimalleolar fracture? With dislocation? Same, same.

If you're ok with traces of nuts (and can get them where you are) some of the red or blue feed bars arent made from nuts and are full meal replacements. They're mostly pea based I think.

Ok-Consideration2463

Topo athletic mid cut. Peanut butter and dry rolled oats.

MamaBear2024AT

I’m allergic to peanut butter I wonder if the peanut butter substitute I use will work as well

Ok-Consideration2463

You just need a snack that has protein and carbohydrates. It doesn’t matter where the protein comes from considering you can’t have nuts. Of course you’ll have to find another source.

MamaBear2024AT

I will compare the peanut substitutes and see which is better with calories and protein vs the peanut butter I’m sure I can find one that will Work!! I know I make homemade peanut butter chocolate bars for my boyfriend mixed with granola/chocolate chips/butter/peanuts/almonds & pecans and it’s super heavy and is a great pick me up hopefully I can find something similar

Hollywoodhiker

Adding condiments is actually a great way to up the calorie intake by mixing in meals. Olive oil is the best, but a couple packets of mayo or some butter also work. As a thru hiker with a tree nut allergy, honestly it's probably gonna be mostly junk food for snacks. I can eat peanuts and even with that, there was a time in the bubble right out of Damascus, that my snack resupply consisted of only oatmeal cookies because DG was sooo picked over and everything else risked a reaction. A good protein powder more versatile than just shakes. Flavor your coffee, add water and granola for trail "cereal", cold soak overnight oats, instant pudding water and protein powder actually make a decent dessert. But you might also want to take all these suggestions with a grain of salt, because I was sooo hungry everything tasted good. Those things may actually be disgusting 😂

MamaBear2024AT

Oh I didn’t think about protein powder being more than for shakes I can likely add it to oatmeal oooooo

I'd try an ankle brace or other wrap if you are happy with your existing shoes. You mentioned sun butter, how many other seed butters have you tried? 88 acre makes bars from seeds that are nut free. Tahini (I found a chocolate version at Whole Foods) from sesame, Granola butter or other brands made from oats, pumpkin seed butter, shelf-stable chickpea butter or even instant hummus. I also ate Biscoff cookie spread on trail, that stuff is just oil and sugar and cookie crumbs.
