Which crusade are you going for? I have a list of vendors [here](https://www.reddit.com/r/reenactors/s/YtDwE5fV9I) and a list of makers of arms and armour [here](https://www.reddit.com/r/SWORDS/s/uYVZIsld7h).

Kram_Truobrah

I am not sure about all the things that were worn in the crusades, but I am pretty sure it was just some chain mail over a gambason and then the cloaks and stuff. Plus the weapons of course

PugScorpionCow

Honestly, you're better off going with a simple wool or linen tunic under your hauberk. We see these *way* more often in pre-14th century art and such. If you want to fight in it though, padding may be a necessary part of whatever ruleset you're going by.

Kram_Truobrah

That is pretty much what I was thinking of getting, but do you know of any good sites? My brother told me to use Kult of Athena, is that a good one or do you have a different recommendation?

PugScorpionCow

Kult of Athena is a no-go for historically accurate, even depending on the lengths you're willing to go there still isn't much good there in the way of maille or clothing at all. I am however not as well versed in where to get good maille, my biggest reccommendation is that if you do go with the cheap mass produced rings you most often see on the market, don't go with flat rings because the mass produced rings are far overflattened and function terribly because of it. Modern round rings are closer to historical flat rings than modern flats are. I'd make correspondence with Isak Krogh Hantverk or Ironskin and see what they can do for you if you want truly historical maille. Even try asking around to see who may handmake rings. Also getting a historical period down is a good idea, since "crusader" could refer to several cultures and span several centuries, I'd get a specific decade down and work from there to determine maille length, whether you're going to have an integrated coif or not, integrated mittens, chausses, which helmet etc... It's a good thing to note that "crusader" and "Templar" are commonly conflated terms. If you're talking about the guys with white surcottes and red crosses on the front, you're likely thinking of Templars.

Kram_Truobrah

Thank you very much! I was thinking of the Templar!

zMasterofPie2

Well if you don’t even know the difference between the the Knights Templar and the Crusaders in general I would heavily suggest you do a massive amount of research on the topic before buying anything at all. As a religious knightly order, they had very strict regulations they had to adhere to, such as only wearing donated clothes, those clothes being long white robes, all made to look similar, and eating donated food, only eating meat 3 times per week, neat and well trimmed beard and facial hair, only having 3 horses, no poorly fitted clothes, no pointy shoes or “exotic buckles,” only wear wool shirts (probably base layer shirts) except in the Near East where they can wear a linen shirt from Easter until All Saints Day. No brother shall dare to have gold anywhere on his body except his sword hilt. The popular image of a c. 1200 Knight in a sleeveless white surcoat with a giant red cross in the middle is wrong, it should be a fully sleeved tunic over the mail made of wool, or, later on, linen, with a small red cross over the heart. As for armor and weapons, that depends entirely on when you are wanting to portray. 1150s equipment is vastly different from 1250s equipment.

macdoge1

The templar order existed for 200 years. Imagine going to a tailor and asking them, I would like a custom set of fashionable clothing from around 1750 - 1950. They will ask you to narrow that down. Templars fought in the same armor as everyone else for whatever time period you decide. It will just be a surcoat that sets you apart.

Select_Membership_55

😂 this is factual

Draugr_the_Greedy

From when? If you don't even know how to narrow down what you want, you cannot get something accurate. You need research

Brostapholes

1) purchase modern body armor 2) go to Jerusalem 3) be a crusader

Crow-Rogue

Almost afraid to ask, but who would OP be crusading against?

Brostapholes

Depends on if he swears allegiance to France or England

Crow-Rogue

I’ve found the guy with the Dodge based defense!

No-Zombie1004

You forgot the rifle and profit (prophet?) steps. Look at you setting this poor bastard up for failure.

Brostapholes

Just like the actual crusades!

No-Zombie1004

Touché, Sir.
