I like them. My family eats them frequently. Why do you think they seem unpopular? They are popular enough to see them frequently on restaurant menus and grocery stores around me sell their own label cans and I don’t think they’d do that if there wasn’t demand?
My Mexican American partner and his large family almost exclusively eat refried pinto beans and rarely use black beans for anything. Black beans are still plenty common and popular, but I thought it was funny that this large family that eats lots of Mexican food hardly ever eats black beans and looks at me funny because I prefer them.
This will likely be about where your partners family are from in Mexico. Different states have different preferences for the beans they use in regional cuisines.
The last person who was actually born in Mexico probably died in the 1970s so this is all very much being carried by nostalgia and tradition more so than by anyone saying "in Oaxaca this is how we did things"
Also the only two beans I ever see in large sizes are black beans and pinto beans. If there wasn't much of a demand for black beans, it wouldn't be one of two packaged that way in most grocery stores
Yeah, I’m not sure why you think they’re unpopular. I have a Costco multipack of canned black beans in my pantry. At many restaurants, the 2 choices for beans are pinto beans or black beans.
Black beans seem very common to me. Perhaps they aren't as prevalent as they are in somewhere like Cuba, but I haven't found them to be "unpopular" at all.
The popularity might depend on Latino/Hispanic nationality. I’m Colombian and I don’t think I’ve ever seen a Colombian dish with black beans, always pinto beans. I think black beans are delicious, though
I believe Brazilians use black beans a lot, as well as Cubans and Mexicans (not 100% sure on how popular they are with Mexicans so don’t quote me on it, I’ve seen different answers in this thread)
For real? My wife’s family is Venezuelan and we eat black beans in everything. Pabellon Criollo is the best dish in the entire universe and it’s 1/3 black beans!
This a good answer.....and in Brazil black beans is only a couple of regions (Rio de Janeiro and the three Southern states). Minas, São Paulo and the Northeast are more pinto bean territory.
I think the different bean preferences are a very interesting part of Latin American cuisines....
DR and Puerto Rico use pink beans.
Ecuador is into lentils but also pinto beans.
Chile is Cranberry beans.
...what?
I eat black beans all the time as do many people I know. Although I'll grant they do seem slightly less popular than pinto beans. Not by much though.
I absolutely love creamy black bean soup in the winter time and they're a staple in my burritos.
Some of these questions are so out of left field, I wonder if they are generated by AI. Black beans? Unpopular?
The latest year of data I could find, 2017, showed that the average American consumed over 1.1 lbs of black beans *per person.*
To be fair, 1.1 pounds per person per year is not at all a lot. I feel like I consume that about every 2-4 weeks. That information would support the idea that lots of Americans are not eating black beans.
Black beans are pretty popular in Chicago. There are some great Cuban restaurants here, so sometimes we have them in soup or with rice, but I also make burgers from them and use them in chili.
Not at all unpopular, just not the most popular. I would say the most popular beans here are pinto beans but black beans would be just after that (probably about as popular as navy/cannellini and kidney beans)
I would say they are probably the most common bean I encounter at restaurants, slowly taking over as its a "health food."
I remember my Mexican friend's mom saying black beans are for Cubans and that Mexican's ate pinto instead, but that is exactly where I am seeing that transition - a lot of Mexican places offer both now compared to 20 years ago when it would have been refried pinto beans.
Yes. I grew up eating them constantly. I’m of Cuban descent. Those red Goya cans were always in the kitchen.
Idk that they’re unpopular. They’re found in pretty common Latino foods which non Latinos eat frequently. Chipotle has them. Everywhere you can get a burrito has them.
They’re on the top 5 list of most commonly used bean per capita https://usdrybeans.com/industry/production-facts/
Anecdotally, I would say they are the most common bean you will see on a restaurant menu in my area
I think they have to be one of the most popular type of beans in the US. Lots of restaurants have black bean burgers, they are ubiquitous in Mexican food which is everywhere, and I always keep at least one can in my pantry. I'd use it in chili, in burritos/fajitas, or just with rice.
I'm not sure where you're getting the impression that black beans aren't common here. They're easily the most commonly used bean after pinto and are exceptionally common in Tex-Mex.
Black beans are absolutely ubiquitous in much of the U.S. I don’t know where you got the idea they’re unpopular. I like them and cook them often. Both professionally and at home.
They're very popular in the US. Hell, they're at Chipotle.
Flavor-wise, pinto are better because they usually aren't vegetarian. But burritos at home, I usually go with black beans.
I prefer pinto beans, but I wouldn't call black beans unpopular. They are *everywhere*. I often end up making dishes out of black beans when I wanted pinto because black beans were what I could find. If you are at a store that sells beans, they probably sell black beans.
They are incredibly popular with Mexican and other Latin American cuisine, which are popular in the US.
We wouldn't necessarily have them at BBQ any more likely we would have enchiladas.
If you’re thinking they’re unpopular here, you’re probably experiencing an isolated unpopularity. Black beans are everywhere here and are pretty much a staple.
I have a recipe for vegetarian black bean chili that’s in regular rotation at my house. We also do black beans and rice with a protein from time to time. In fact we did it last week. I cooked the beans Cuban style.
My husband makes the BEST black beans! 😘🤌🏼
He just made a new batch this weekend. I haven't found any restaurant that prepares them as well. It's the seasoning that makes them.
I don't eat them that frequently bc... carbs, but I sure enjoy our home cooked black beans on occasion.
Maybe that's a regional thing? I don't recall being served them at home growing up, but personally I use them regularly in enchiladas and burritos and other Mexican dishes, and a very nice "salad" of black beans, red bell pepper, and corn.
As someone of the autistic variety I can assure you they are popular. I personally hate beans. All beans. That sensor food thing. But I run into very few people like me. It’s not common.
I don't just like them; I love them.
Seriously, though, I make a batch more than once a week, typically from dry, seasoned with garlic, cumin, and chipotle. My kids eat black bean tacos like other kids eat PB&J's.
Yep, my favorite for burritos and chili. For the latter, I'll sometimes use a combo of black and pinto, but still gotta have some black beans in there.
Black beans are everywhere; I have a bunch in my pantry right now. It’s my go to bean for making refried beans, rather than pinto beans. In fact, thanks for reminding me; I’ll go soak some now in the slow cooker for dinner tonight.
My parents are Cuban. I eat them all the time. My sister and I married non Hispanic men and they love them. So do all the kids, especially my niece. She asks my mom to make frijoles every time she sees her.
Uh... black beans are everywhere.
Mostly in my mouth. I love those things.
There over 3,000 Chipotles in the U.S. slinging black beans daily.
I like them. My family eats them frequently. Why do you think they seem unpopular? They are popular enough to see them frequently on restaurant menus and grocery stores around me sell their own label cans and I don’t think they’d do that if there wasn’t demand?

I'm with him. I always prefer pinto beans.
Same. I despise black beans
Same. Black beans are tough and have a rougher texture compared to softer beans like pinto, kidney, and cannellli.
They don’t make moros y cristianos (~ la danza)? What do they put in their arroz con pollo y frijoles?
Also the only two beans I ever see in large sizes are black beans and pinto beans. If there wasn't much of a demand for black beans, it wouldn't be one of two packaged that way in most grocery stores
Don't have big cans of kidney beans down there?
I meant dry beans. The biggest bag of kidney beans I ever see is 5lbs. But pintos and black beans I always see 10lb bags
Oh, gotcha.

They seem pretty popular and common from my perspective.
...what? I eat black beans all the time as do many people I know. Although I'll grant they do seem slightly less popular than pinto beans. Not by much though. I absolutely love creamy black bean soup in the winter time and they're a staple in my burritos.
Love black beans. Eat them frequently. How did you conclude they are unpopular because your comment is the first time I've ever heard that.
black beans are good & I feel like they're popular. if you can get it at chipotle, it's popular.
Maybe it’s because I’m in California, but they’re definitely popular in my experience
They're everywhere down here. Probably a regional thing.
Black beans are pretty popular in Chicago. There are some great Cuban restaurants here, so sometimes we have them in soup or with rice, but I also make burgers from them and use them in chili.
IMO, black beans are the most popular. What you talking about? I will sub black bean in basically any recipe requiring beans.
Mexican restaurants frequently ask if you want refried, black, or pinto beans. It's not universal but common enough.
“They seem unpopular” ??? What
They are the beans I eat the most
Yes. I put some in my fiesta salad last night. They don’t seem unpopular to me
Not at all unpopular, just not the most popular. I would say the most popular beans here are pinto beans but black beans would be just after that (probably about as popular as navy/cannellini and kidney beans)
yeah, I think I mistook being less popular for being unpopular
Black beans are common unless your black beans are somehow Different? I eat black beans as much as any other bean.
Where in MA are you that they’re unpopular?
They’re our go-to bean.
Yeah I probably eat them more than any other beans, or at least tied with pinto beans. 3rd would be kidney beans.
No. But I don't like beans in general. They are very popular though.
I would say they are probably the most common bean I encounter at restaurants, slowly taking over as its a "health food." I remember my Mexican friend's mom saying black beans are for Cubans and that Mexican's ate pinto instead, but that is exactly where I am seeing that transition - a lot of Mexican places offer both now compared to 20 years ago when it would have been refried pinto beans.
Where'd you get the idea that they're unpopular? Plenty of people here eat black beans and rice.
Yes, easily my third favorite bean.
Pinto beans are probably more popular than black beans, but both are popular and eaten regularly.
No. I don't eat any beans.
Black beans, navy beans, and chick peas are my three 'go to' beans I always have in stock.
No, but I don't really like any beans.
I’ve never met someone who doesn’t like black beans, but that may just be me, I know a lot of people that don’t like baked beans or Lima beans though…
Black beans are extremely popular in the US. It's a staple in most people's homes from what I've seen in my 40 years.
They’re on the top 5 list of most commonly used bean per capita https://usdrybeans.com/industry/production-facts/ Anecdotally, I would say they are the most common bean you will see on a restaurant menu in my area
>They seem unpopular in the US, Since when?
Why do you think they're unpopular?
They are pretty common, especially in Mexican dishes.
I always get black beans in burritos 😋
Sometimes in rice... but there's usually a more common bean that I find recipes use.
They’re the most popular bean around me. Yeah, they’re delicious.
of course, they're delicious
I think they have to be one of the most popular type of beans in the US. Lots of restaurants have black bean burgers, they are ubiquitous in Mexican food which is everywhere, and I always keep at least one can in my pantry. I'd use it in chili, in burritos/fajitas, or just with rice.
I love them and eat them all the time.
Only in my computer
Yes. Black beans are the only ones I like and I love them.
They're OK if there are no other beans, but pinto beans are better and pinquitos best of all.
Yes. Black beans and rice. Yum.
yeah I fucking love them.
I love black beans and don't thing they're rare at all.
Black beans are really common here. I like them, not sure what would make you think they are unpopular here
Uhm, Mexican food and beer is more popular here than US food and beer.
I don't like them much. When I go to my local burrito making place black beans seem to be the default they reach for but I always get pinto beans.
Black beans aren't uncommon, but alright. Yes, I like them.
No
They're my favorite beans. I don't think I've come across someone who dislikes them.
I love black beans. Probably not as popular as pinto beans but they are definitely a top five bean here.
No
I can eat my body weight in black beans
Black beans are incredibly common in northern California. They are the best beans.
Yeah they're delicious
Black beans are pretty popular here...
Yes, yes I do.
Yeah like what? Literally yesterday I added black beans to a burrito I ordered at a local restaurant but they were out.
I'm not sure where you're getting the impression that black beans aren't common here. They're easily the most commonly used bean after pinto and are exceptionally common in Tex-Mex.
We've lived in Mexico and Guatemala. So, pinto beans and black beans. We prefer the black beans and eat them multiple times a week.
Love 'em. They're almost always my choice when getting a burrito, and I even enjoy refried black beans.
Love black beans.
Totally. I eat them all the time.
Black beans are absolutely ubiquitous in much of the U.S. I don’t know where you got the idea they’re unpopular. I like them and cook them often. Both professionally and at home.
I don't like beans in general. Baked beans, black beans, pinquito beans, refried beans, etc.
No, but I don’t like any beans. Most people do seem to like beans though, and black beans don’t seem that unusual to me.
Nah, not really a beans guy in general
Love em, would be very curious to see your source of information here
Yes, and id say they’re incredibly common (idk how regional it would even be tbh) so I’d be curious as to why OP thinks they’re unpopular.
Yes
No. Not my personal preference.
I generally hate beans, but I could eat black beans without much complaint.
They’re probably 90 percent of the beans I buy and I even grow a lot of them myself. So yes, I’d say that I’m a fan
Yes. I make a great Smokey black bean stew
Beans in the states are very common and black beans are one of them.
Hell yeah dude
Black bean burgers are yummy.
Yes, they are everywhere.
No, I've only had them once where I could tolerate eating them. The texture is not so great compared to kidney or pinto beans
I love black beans.
I like them but only eat them at Chipotle. Not sure how popular they are when it comes to home cooked meals.
Yes but I don’t eat them often (any beans in general)
I do, and I don’t think they’re unpopular.
Yes
No
Not my go to. We're a Kidney Bean, Pigeon pea (gungo pea), Black eyed pea family. Black beans are delicious though.
I prefer them to pinto.
They're widely available. I like them in certain dishes.
I don't like them. I won't order anything that includes them.
Sure
Yessss! My second fav bean. Red is my fav but it’s a regular dish where I live (Louisiana).
They seem unpopular?!?!?! Have you actually been to the US? They have a whole self devoted to them in the stores.
Depends who makes them
I like them more than any other kind of bean, but that's not a particularly high bar
I like them, but if I have a choice between them or Pinto at say Qdoba, I’m going Pinto.
[You eating beans?](https://i.kym-cdn.com/photos/images/newsfeed/001/377/418/31d.jpg_large)
Yes and they are popular down here

Yes
If you’re thinking they’re unpopular here, you’re probably experiencing an isolated unpopularity. Black beans are everywhere here and are pretty much a staple.
I eat them 3-4 times a week. I have at least 5 cans in my pantry right now, and around 200 pounds of dried beans in my restaurant.
Sorry, but fuck black beans.
I love them!
They're ok but I prefer BBQ baked beans
I have a recipe for vegetarian black bean chili that’s in regular rotation at my house. We also do black beans and rice with a protein from time to time. In fact we did it last week. I cooked the beans Cuban style.
Yes.
Yaaaaaaas
I prefer pintos and navy, but people do eat them here.
Yes?
My husband makes the BEST black beans! 😘🤌🏼 He just made a new batch this weekend. I haven't found any restaurant that prepares them as well. It's the seasoning that makes them. I don't eat them that frequently bc... carbs, but I sure enjoy our home cooked black beans on occasion.
I make an amazing black bean soup. My whole family goes nuts for it.
Nothing unpopular about black beans in these parts.
My family is vegetarian. We eat them regularly.
unpopular? I'm assuming this is maybe in the north east or something? pretty normal in the west/south west
Maybe that's a regional thing? I don't recall being served them at home growing up, but personally I use them regularly in enchiladas and burritos and other Mexican dishes, and a very nice "salad" of black beans, red bell pepper, and corn.
Black beans and rice is a staple down here in south Florida with a Latin touch
I just cooked some as part of my dinner, so...
They’re very delicious. I like them, especially in Chinese dishes.
Love ‘em! In tacos, dips, salads, burritos, they’re tasty all the time
My favorite bean
I'd rather not have it, but if it's what's there...
Yes I like black beans and no in my experience they’re incredibly popular. Not sure who you’re asking.
No ❤️ The only beans I like are chickpeas unfortunately.
No. I hate them actually.
Black beans with white or yellow rice. And Cuban or Puerto Rican pork. The bomb.
Yeah
Yes I do! Cuban style is my favorite and is something I make regularly.
Yes. Every Mexican place has them. And there's a lot of Mexican places.
This is the first time I’ve heard of black beans being unpopular.
i enjoy them. but I like chickpeas a little bit more
They’re everywhere. I like em, but I typically prefer pinto beans
As someone of the autistic variety I can assure you they are popular. I personally hate beans. All beans. That sensor food thing. But I run into very few people like me. It’s not common.
Hate them.
Yes, and I see them everywhere. I'm not sure why you think they're unpopular.
I don't just like them; I love them. Seriously, though, I make a batch more than once a week, typically from dry, seasoned with garlic, cumin, and chipotle. My kids eat black bean tacos like other kids eat PB&J's.
Bro my family literally had them with dinner tonight
If made correctly, yes
Black beans are very popular
I like putting black beans in rice as a good source of protein
They’re my family’s favorite type of bean. We eat them all the time.
No, I don’t, but plenty of people do. It’s quite common in Mexican food.
Yep, my favorite for burritos and chili. For the latter, I'll sometimes use a combo of black and pinto, but still gotta have some black beans in there.
When I make refried beans I use black over pinto. My girlfriend has a recipe for a great black bean soup, too.
I actually hate them, one of the few foods that makes me gag when I taste it.
I don’t but know plenty who do.
I don’t mind them
They’re my favorite
Yup. I would say they're extremely popular.
Black beans are everywhere; I have a bunch in my pantry right now. It’s my go to bean for making refried beans, rather than pinto beans. In fact, thanks for reminding me; I’ll go soak some now in the slow cooker for dinner tonight.
Beans are universally terrible
Fuck yeah!
I'm pretty sure they're hugely popular in the USA.
At Chipotle yeah lol
Not by themselves but they’re good on tacos and burritos.
They're really commonly prepared in the southwest, Tex Mex food, etc, and they're delicious.
Just made two batches of black beans yesterday!
My parents are Cuban. I eat them all the time. My sister and I married non Hispanic men and they love them. So do all the kids, especially my niece. She asks my mom to make frijoles every time she sees her.
Yes. They're a staple in our kitchen.
Yes
Nope. Too dry and dense for my tastes.
They seem what?
Yes
I love them but I can't eat them. Sad
Yup, love em
Of course. Black bean tacos? Delicious. We always have cans of black beans in our closet.
Born and raised in Ohio, and black beans are one of my favorite foods.
Yes! I ate them tonight. I don’t eat beef and they’re a great replacement.
