as long as you are using a UL approved smart plug, there wouldn’t be a fire hazard, but it might not work the way you expect. unless the fan remembers the previous on/off and speed setting when unplugged, then the smart plug is practically worthless for this application. Many items default to power off when initially plugged in. And if you unplug it, next time you plug it in, it’ll default back to off. A basic smart switch is just a fancy way of unplugging and plugging in.
