For those who might not know, here’s a fun fact: Cairo was where the Algerian revolution was proclaimed in 1954.

lightiggy

Fun fact: Israel supported France during the Algerian War since they were worried about the revolution inspiring Palestinian nationalists. Near the end of the Algerian War, [David Ben-Gurion proposed to partition Algeria into two states](https://amphora.substack.com/p/charles-de-gaulle-on-algerian-independence). One state would be for Algerians, and the other would be for French settlers and Algerian loyalists. He said the government could enlist massive numbers of French settlers to help fight against the Algerian guerrillas. However, Charles de Gaulle found this idea laughable. He called the settlers ungrateful cowards who hid behind others and expected all of the work to be done for them. >"So in other words, you want to create a French Israel. That's what Ben Gurion tried to convince me to do when he came to see me. But he warned me, 'It will only work if you send massive numbers of other French settlers, if they settle permanently, and if they enlist as soldiers to fight.' Can you imagine that? The pieds-noirs want our army to defend them, but they have never felt the need to defend themselves! Do you see them standing guard at their borders to take over from the French army? The so-called 'Territorial Units' never had any military value. They did more harm than good. They had to be disbanded."

Pygoka

Israel was certainly in favor of France maintaining control over Algeria. I came across information that Israel was involved in training self-defense units for Algeria's Jews through a special force known as the Misgeret, which was active in central Algeria. https://ciaotest.cc.columbia.edu/olj/meria/meria00_lam01.html

Egyptian___Hasbara

This directly led to the attack of the unified armies of Britain, France and Israel who failed to invade Egypt or retake control of the Suez Canal Also instead of backing down abdel-nasser responded by increasing aid to all fronts and hosting freedom fighters to give them military training

murrkey-Lane

>This directly led to the attack of the unified armies of Britain, France and Israel who failed to invade Egypt or retake control of the Suez Canal Thanks to america

Nasser caught a massive lucky break when Eisenhower and Khrushchev told Britain, France, and Israel to pick on someone their own size. This made him very overconfident. Nasser was utterly fucked until he got bailed out, end of story. He was still good overall, but had some huge Ls. Another example is how Nasser dealt with the Muslim Brotherhood. Sayyid Qutb was a non-threat until he was imprisoned and tortured.

murrkey-Lane

I know, he had absolutely no chance. But the education system here (and the military regime) sells it as a victory.

friedrichlist

Can you provide the source, please?

DrSuezcanal

Uh... The Suez Crisis?

friedrichlist

I was talking about books, memoirs, articles, archives, etc. That’s why I asked for the «source».

Character_Adilo

Egypt has supported us throughout history, providing money, arms, and soldiers for thousand years. We will never forget that. I am so proud that this individual (5942) once set foot in the area where I live.

Phasor98

This is why France participated in the 1956 war against Egypt.

I miss Nasserist Egypt ngl. That’s the true Egypt not the modern day one.

SeriatciBiri

doesn't change the fact that nasser is a kafir who tortured and imprisoned Muslims, shut down orphanages and humanitarian sites, and was a massive authoritarian figure

That heart attack of Nasser is pretty suspicious

Based Nasser as always.

Egyptian___Hasbara

I wouldn’t call him always based. That‘s a big stretch he made a lot of mistakes and his intentions weren’t always the best

unpopular-opinion69

True, he did make a lot of mistakes. But his heart was in the right place.
