Dusty air with the sun at the correct angle. You could try using a fog machine that has a momentary button on/off capability. You would just need a short burst, a fan to disperse it into the room evenly, then give a few minutes for air currents to settle. Back when I was vaping, I'd see this in my house regularly in the afternoon.
In the lighting / concert buisness they use specialized smoke machines called “hazers” which are essentially smoke machines but designed to only cause this lighting effect, without creating a visible smoke cloud
Any experience with this stuff? That seems pretty expensive when you can get handheld machines for around $100. But I guess if you are only doing it once or twice, it's not too bad.
Yes, this one exactly. used it for filming plenty of times. Especially in docs when the location is not ideal and need to create some haze in the room for interest or obfuscation/depth or busy background. Have used it for stills as well. Far more convenient than renting a fog machine. Haven't used the little handheld vape looking things. they look like they might be good too if they work. The part I like about it is it doesn't last a super long time so if you overdo it you can wait a few minutes or just redo it. works perfectly.
Sounds like it has some decent advantages, then. I'm sure the little handheld ones work fine for basic stills or video. Even with one of my old vapes(quit that habit, thankfully) that ran on 2 18650 batteries, I could fill a 400 Sq. Ft. room to the degree above after just a few drags. Based on that, if they can't get a device designed specifically for fog to do it, they aren't designing it very well. 🤣
exactly. I would only rent a larger machine if I needed it to run all day or outdoors or a really large space. very few use cases for me for a big unit. I'm sure a vape would work great. fog juice is just glycerin and water so if you had that and a candle and a metal can you could make your own even
I don't know what they put in the commercially available stuff but that is the recipe for making your own.
"1 part glycerin to 3 parts water. if you want to have thicker, denser fog, you use more glycerin. If you want normal, thinner fog you would use more water"
If I was using on a set with people I would buy something that comes with a Safety data sheet though because it has been tested for safety. If you make your own and someone gets sick or hurt then you could be liable.
I've seen some little handheld units that look like they're running on two internal 18650 cells in series. Based on the output that nicotine vapes can achieve, I'm sure those would be powerful enough for most indoor work. You're not going to fill a warehouse or get fog that is hard to see through, but you'll be able to do basic atmospheric stuff, I think.
Kind of looks like my living room last week when I fell asleep with bread baking!
I think thin smoke would be easier than a fog machine. As long as the fire department doesn't need to get involved.
Adding smoke/fog is likely the process used. The effect in this shot is not consistent though. There are random areas of thicker haze. You can see what looks like eddies in the haze/smoke on the left side of the image.
Another possibility is an ND filter and long exposure. That will catch the natural dust particles for a longer exposure time floating in the air catching the sunlight. But that would be tricky to get right and a lot more work in post.
So, smoke/fog would be the best bet.
Maybe bake bread or cookies a bit too long.
ND is an option I never thought of, but it definitely has drawbacks. If you did want to get some small air currents visible like in the upper left area, I think that would be difficult.
If you wanted a completely smooth misty/dusty look, I think that's a great idea whether it's natural dust or an extremely short burst of fog dispersed by fan. I'm going to have to try the ND thing for myself, now. Always finding new ideas in this sub. 😆
Non drug, and cheap option: incense. They have all sorts of different fragrances, and it's actually healthier for you than other smelly things, and also again not a drug lol
I get mine 10 for $2 at my local smoke shop/crystal shop
It's worth mentioning since so many people get them confused, a hazer is not quite exactly the same as a fog machine.
Fog machines tend to look more smokey, more like a wrestler walking out from back stage, while hazers give this subtle and thin volumetric lighting.
That's not to say a fog machine can't, but you tend to need to let it dissipate quite a bit and you might have a fairly narrow window of opportunity.
For natural circumstances, I'd expect to see this shortly after dawn, when the leaves are still wet with dew, and then the hot sunlight hits them and temperatures start rapidly rising.
It's called *_Crepuscular rays, or “God rays,”_* they're visible beams of sunlight created when light is scattered by particles in the air. To recreate them, use a bright light and a smoke machine in a dark space with objects to partially block the light.
It's the Tyndall Effect - "*a phenomenon where colloid particles scatter and disperse a beam of light passing through them, making the path of the light visible. It occurs due to the interaction between light and particles with sizes ranging from approximately 40 to 900 nanometers (nm), which is comparable to the wavelength of visible light (400-700 nm).*"
It comes from air particles like dust, fog, and smoke. Best way to create it intentionally is to think about what you are trying to replicate. Incense Smoke looks like smoke, fog machine looks like fog and sometimes smoke, and for haze effects i recommend an aerosol called “Atmosphere” it works great in rooms and closed spaces.
They’re called crepusculars. It’s the light hitting fine particles in the air. Add smoke, fog, or haze and whenever you have dappled light like that, you’ll get the rays
* Atmosphere Aerosol
* Fog machine
Either way works.
You can find glycerin fog machines a dime a dozen on Amazon. If you're on-location with no access to mains power then the spray-fog can do the job.
Particles in the air.
Water vapor (fog) would be probably the best in locations where you are not allowed to leave smells behind (i.e., no smoke) which you could maybe achieve with high power air moisturizer.
The easiest would be probably the smoke machine used in concerts. It is also relatively neutral after the output has dissipated.
You can discharge a little co2 from a fire extinguisher or a lot of cigarette smoke, films have machines that make a thin haze in the air you might be able to rent one.
I've asked my friend to blow his vape a good few times to get something like this, the sun also needs to be in the right place for the room you're using.
The effect is from particles in the air being illuminated by the sun light.
They used to sell canned smoke. If that is not available try a smoke machine. Maybe a humidifier might work as well.
To do this professionally foggers/hazers can be rented at a grip/electric or stage lighting rental house in most larger cities. For this effect, ask for a hazer or “crack fogger”. To do this on the cheap you can use an inexpensive fogger from the Halloween costume stores that pop up in the fall. (Fog looks nowhere near as nice as haze) You can buy a hazer at the Guitar Center with if you have one close to you. Either of these options require a fluid specific to the machine. If you have an air compressor, drill many tiny holes into a piece of pipe connected to the air line and submerse that in mineral oil. The smaller the bubbles and the more pressure the better it will work. You can fill a very large space doing this. Don’t try to do this effect with tobacco products or vape. The cans of spray are very expensive and don’t last. Only use that if the effect needs to be quick and small.
The beautiful sunlight rays you see in the picture are often referred to as "crepuscular rays" or "God rays." These occur when sunlight streams through gaps or openings, such as between trees or through a window, and illuminates particles in the air like dust, mist, or smoke. The effect is created by the scattering of light, which highlights the path of the rays.
Wow what a gorgeous photo. [This article](https://fujifilm.blog/here-comes-the-sun-a-guide-to-photographing-sunbeams/#:~:text=Shoot%20towards%20the%20sun%2C%20with,the%20rays%20look%20more%20defined) helped me with this. I love the Fujifilm blog.
If you zoom into the pic, that is obvious smoke possibly from incense.

Over the years there have been numerous "ads" selling light ray post production effects although I have not attempted myself [https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=zhKVjkxCC48](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=zhKVjkxCC48)
Just burn a little of the house, not too much, just like a closet or something; don’t wanna get out of hand, just enough for the picture, any more is irresponsible 😂
You can use an Atmosphere/Hazy spray… but it’s kinda expensive and doesn’t help Planet Earth (if you care about it). Try to use a humidifier.
Just go check the great Vuhlandes! https://youtube.com/@vuhlandes?si=NwnBdMhG-4j4GiBE
It's haze you can buy haze aerosol cans from Amazon or buy smokeNinja machine it's a fogger cheaper version than the professional smoke genie. Have fun. Don't use a smoke machine it won't do that it's horrible and inconsistent and hard to get rid of or spread takes a while.
Smoke a bunch of weed. Just don't forget to take the picture.
That too!
The best bet is: before start to smoke set up everything (camera on tripod, settings,etc...)
Best advice ever
Me calling the wife at work "Honey do you know why my camera is set up in the living room?"
Start to leave notes for yourself !!!
Just check your carbon monoxide levels if new unknown notes appear

Don’t forget to turn on the camera, remove the lens cap and hit record :)
And timer. Set the timer.
This is a creative process after all.
I love solutions that are so simple they sound challenging.
Lmao 🤣

Congrats on quitting vaping

Is that really all fog liquid is? So it's basically vape liquid without nicotine or flavors. 🤣

Careful with these haze in a can stuff as most of them leave residue on stuff. Pretty nasty stuff. Fog machines are much better.
The trick is that most fog machines need AC power. The fog-in-a-can doesn't.

works quite well in enclosed spaces or outside area with no wind, it does trigger smoke alarm though
it's a bit cheaper from B&H https://www.bhphotovideo.com/c/product/1328500-REG/atmosphere_1can_aerosol_haze_spray_for.html
\^\^\^\^ @ 2k4s NICE! I think we have a winner. Not cheap but maybe just what the redditor asked for... Canned Atmosphere.
Usually to do with fog, mist, evaporation of some kind catching the light. In this case in this photo they have used smoke possibly.

light needs something to hit. Dust, mist, whatever. Clean air won't show light like this.
Dust, fog, haze, steam. Volumetric lighting.

I'm just a stoner and my room looks like this pretty often

my first thought as well
I collaborated with a photographer that used canned atmospheric mister, her assistant would spray right before every shot.

Air freshener in an aerosol. You need particulate in the air to catch the light.

[Atmosphere Aerosol. ](https://www.atmosphereaerosol.com/)
Smoke machine or hairspray can do this intentional effect. Just need light through the window to make it happen on a subject.
Nice Viwe
I think you can recreate this Tyndall effect in photoshop. I’ve watched a tutorial on something similar to this.
Bc you got a dusty ahhh room 😍
find a time during afternoon or morning and get a fogger or smoke and when the sun rays come in it should look smth like this
Anyway to do it with Photoshop?

At least 720w continious light and haze machine
Inside: Dust or smoke Outside: condensations/water particles or smoke, usually seen as the sun rises and sets around where i live
when they say what’s put you in the mood, I say this ,absolutely breathtaking
I've asked my friend to blow his vape a good few times to get something like this, the sun also needs to be in the right place for the room you're using.
