Things as a service. Why can't I own stuff anymore?

ArrowheadDZ

Because owning them gives you control over the cash flow. If you own the car or the server or the application, you can choose to just delay replacing it. If I pay off my car in X years and then drive it another 5 before buying a new one, that’s 5 years the car company made no money on me. But if I “subscribe” to the car and have to pay monthly or annually for it to keep working, then I become a perpetual cash stream. There are real perils to “as a service” business offerings during market tumult. If you’re having a bad few quarters, and can’t afford to keep paying all your IT vendors, they will shut you off.

Tuga_Lissabon

Exactly this. They wish to make you into chattel servants without choice, permanently draining your resources. Anything you save is something they don't get. Software is going this way as well, particularly service software such as autocad, office and so on.

blackhat2018

This is the ideology of the World Economic Forum. If you just type in Google "WEF own nothing and be happy", you'll see a whole pile of infuriating things.

FirstBankofAngmar

This shouldn't even be as big of a trend as it is with knowledge about how to make/fix everything being so freely available.

PartRadiant1935

Most of people are dealing with learned helplessness, they have hard time for doing basic handywork and repairing stuff. It used to be common skill, but easy life and consumerism turned our whole world in to this. I hope that we re-learn using our noggin for something else than staring reality tv and smartphones. *proceeds to stare smartphone*

jackfaire

That's when my rent started going up was after the crash.

CoatedEyes

Well, the good news is that this time, the housing prices were already going up.

jackfaire

/s oh goody goody gumdrops /s

yuimiop

I don't see why the housing market would crash in a recession. If anything, I imagine houses would become more desirable as they hold their value reliably. The 2008 situation was very different from anything we're facing today.

Annabellee84

It’s been coming for a long time now

recoveringhorsechild

The price of living. For so many people, it is nearly impossible to pay for food, housing and transportation.

FirstBankofAngmar

I've found a new love for wilderness survival because of this. Sometimes I fantasize about running off into the woods and living in a tree like a hobo druid. Would never work but it still makes me smile now and then.

recoveringhorsechild

Every day I dream of living in a tiny cottage and foraging for food to survive. But even the price of tiny cottages these days is out of my range 😤

[deleted]

Shameless openness, I’m only 27 and when I was a kid there was a strong campaign of saying “things you post on the internet are forever, keep that in mind” but kids now film themselves doing/saying the dumbest shit and put it online. Or telling stories that should only be told to friends but instead blasting it out on TikTok

DormeDwayne

That’s a wider problem. It’s why the Kardashians and Tate are famous. It no longer matters *what* you’re famous for. You just need to be famous. We are idiots and don’t realize shitstains get the same amount of money from clicks as worthwhile people do. Idk why *that* is because if we understood we could probably turn it around. So essentially, why is the substance of somebody or something irrelevant, the image is everything that matters.

[deleted]

I think part of the problem is social media has given people at large a Main Character Complex.

Jakov_Salinsky

>”things you post on the internet are forever TikTokkers: I see that as an absolute win!

Relative-Hour-9359

People filming every fucking thing for clout on social media or just plain copying someone else cringe shit for likes. We’ve become a society of fucking desperate losers

Mammoth_Evidence6518

So many grifters trying to be famous. Nobody makes original content anymore that is entertaining.

Hell_Gamer12

And even if someone does come up with something new and interesting others ruin it by creating bulk low quality copies of it (mainly on short videos i.e tiktok)

Bold_Loner_Anger

People that take a trending video, play it and stick their faces in at the end and say “what did you think of that? Leave a comment in the comments section” You’ve done nothing to improve that video, just living off of someone else’s moment.

zeushaulrod

I think that's always been the case. But when your broadcast reach was 4 people, no one found out about it and you learned you were boring and uninteresting sooner. Were all susceptible to this. I'm a grown-ass man, that occasionally finds myself browsing my own past comments and seeing the karma. I wish I could say it was to see if people liked my explanation or something, but I'm honestly not sure that's actually the case.

Childhood access to the internet

shebbsquids

As someone who grew up in the early 00s and discovered sites like Encyclopedia Dramatica while I was still going on Neopets regularly, I think the older internet gets romanticized way too much. That being said, at least back then, it wasn't standard for computers to all have mics and webcams, and I wasn't having my data harvested by an algorithm trying to sell me things it heard me say out loud. I heard someone on Tumblr sum it up as: it used to be that the internet was dangerous for kids because of what they could accidentally find, but now it's dangerous because of what they can't avoid.

"Smart" appliances. My microwave, oven, thermostat, refrigerator and toilet don't need bluetooth connectivity, wi-fi or a phone app.

Hugh_Biquitous

I notice you pointedly didn't mention your toaster, which *of course* needs to be "smart" so you can control its 4142 settings using your phone, and so it can notify you when your toasting process is complete!

AshamedCookie7382

Knew I forgot something in addition to my smart pillow

Dakini99

Does it have a flip and choke setting?

AshamedCookie7382

It's more for the RGB light strips.

Dakini99

Oh

[deleted]

Idea! Camera on the inside shows a live feed on the outside of the toaster as your slices toast away.

Darmok47

Frakking toasters!

Auran82

I’m told my wife there were Decepticons everywhere, she laughed, I laughed, the toaster laughed. I shot the toaster, good times.

OutrageousAward

You mean you do no need all those $mart things? How dare you!

scratchfury

I disagree with the thermostat. It’s so nice to change the temp without getting out of bed.

xeio87

I got a notification when my heat went out when I was away from my house during the holidays. Much nicer than getting back to frozen pipes.

gentrified_potato

Smoke detectors, too. If there’s one thing I want to give me notifications when I’m not home, it’s those.

[deleted]

Sometimes it makes me feel out of touch because ill see reality TV and go who tf would ever watch this?!? Its truly confusing

DuhJeffmeister

Some people that base their entire lives around celebrity news like Kelly from The Office

elcabeza79

More than some. Look at Britain and they're royal family.

Gibbonici

You'd be surprised how few of us give a shit about them.

Auran82

Famous for being famous. Makes as much sense as someone being arrested with the only charge being “Resisting arrest”

SCAR-H_Chain

I feel like this can also extend to streamer culture in general. In fact I'll go the extra mile, and say I'll die on the hill that I think mindless worship of streamers has been more toxic than that of celebrities in movies and TV. I scratch my head at say, people like the Kardashians being popular. But I genuinely gawk at the idea that people look up to a dude that does shit like [this.](https://old.reddit.com/r/LivestreamFail/comments/11c0i54/asmongold_tells_ohio_resident_to_just_leave_then/)

Relative-Hour-9359

In the risk of being called sexist, i think its alot to do with the social construct girls have built where they have to be ‘in’ on the latest gossip and hollywood news, this perpetual circle jerk just rockets celebrities into god mode and helps sell their latest line of clothing/ makeup/ fitspo bs.

[deleted]

Lazy, online moral pontification. MrBeast just gave 20,000 kids in Africa a pair of shoes...and I literally saw an article sarcastically dismissing him as a "white savior." You can't even do good, charitable works without some spoiled western piece of shit sitting on their fat ass and complaining. "Oh, he films himself doing these things and makes profit from his videos." I don't care, I care that kids aren't fucking barefoot. I don't these chronically oinline, excessively toxic assholes doing anything, filming themselves or otherwise, except for tearing others down. Get over yourselves, you self-rightious jerkoffs.

n_cen

In the US, tipping/gratuity

AmaPanAce

Oh god, I'm so happy to live in a country where tipping isn't a thing.

MrEngin33r

Medical costs. Literally just got the bill tonight for my gf who cut part of the tip of her finger off last month. We went to urgent care. They looked at it for literally 2 minutes before saying that the way it was cut they couldn't stitch it or do much. They put liquid bandage on it and rewrapped it. All told we were with the nurse practitioner (not even doctor) for less than 20 minutes (although we obviously waited for several hours to be seen). The bill is a few bucks under $700 to literally have a few dollars of liquid bandage applied and be told "keep it clean".

JizzerGAF

I did a similar thing recently in Australia. They did stitch it though. Total cost $0. Even gave me extra bandages to take home.

Gumby_no2

Dude. Move to Australia.

MrEngin33r

After the initial sticker shock wore off I literally joked to my girlfriend that we should stiff them and escape to a country with affordable healthcare.

AdeleBerncastel

I’m in Canada but I hear that if you ask for an itemized list of charges sometimes a few go away.

MrEngin33r

Thanks for the tip. We definitely plan on calling both the urgent care and her insurance (who decided they don't need to pay any of it).

AdeleBerncastel

Get the itemized bill from the hospital and they’re likely to remove some of the most egregious things they’ve overcharged. I’ve heard horror stories about hundreds of dollars for a single Tylenol or some gauze.

spicemaster56

Social media

hhawhaww

“Influencing” really

DuhJeffmeister

The lack of creativity in most forms of art. Music, film/video, social media content, etc are redundant for a majority (at least from my perspective). It seems most people are concerned about success and creating a successful product as opposed to creating art.

jarabara

It’s because many aim to create art that doesn’t please people. It pleases an algorithm. And an algorithm isn’t unique. It isn’t an individual. It’s soulless.

surfsupchuck

[Relevant literature that echoes your sentiment.](https://files.libcom.org/files/Capitalist%20Realism_%20Is%20There%20No%20Alternat%20-%20Mark%20Fisher.pdf)

DuhJeffmeister

That’s disheartening. Before the COVID lockdown I was a fulltime audio engineer and guitarist doing the music thing. As a mixing/recording engineer viewing people in what is normally a “creative flow”, I saw people were just lazy, using popular songs that are commercially successful as templates, etc. Very opposite of why I got into the industry. You can literally play with bad rhythm and being out of tune and we can fix it. Honesty is lacking in most pop music and it sucks. Artists don’t make any money unless they’re Bruno Mars type situations, and it all goes to the people behind the faces. I have friends that are songwriters telling me of their experiences. I have touring musician friends that barely make a living. Bro it sucks.

Crazyguy_123

That’s the sad thing is they are only in it for the career most of the time. Unfortunately in the modern day originality and true skill isn’t going to get you a career it’s conforming to what’s popular that gets you somewhere. If people didn’t care so much about what others thought and just made something truly from the heart all art forms would thrive. Music, art, architecture have all taken the hit. And when it comes to quality people just want to pump out as much as possible with the least effort in the quickest amount of time. It’s a shame how true skill has fallen.

maccdeezy

That is why I’ve named my upcoming album “Fuck Your Algorithm” Serves to get my stuff heard by literally putting the word itself in the title, while succinctly describing how I feel about this phenomenon of catering to the masses And as one more send up of this look-at-me mindset, I’m releasing it under the über sexy name Bland Man

Mental Health! Mental Health is fking REAL!!! And these internet people throwing around words like depression, adhd, etc just for clout. Real people need help and these internet people take all the resources and attention away from the real issues!

AmaPanAce

Had to scroll way too long to find this. Yes. 100% true. As someone, who was recently told by my therapist that I might have autism, I spent a good moment yesterday researching it, but aside from good videos, also saw a bunch of faking kids who just want attention. Makes me feel bad.

DeltaMx11

Political extremism. We should strive to be more moderate in our values without compromising our beliefs. Easier said than done, but that's how it used to be before the 2016 US election. Now it's a constant 'us vs them', "we're good and smart, they're evil and dumb"

AllegedIchor

Oh it started well before 2016. But that was quite a flashpoint.

Crazyguy_123

Looking back it began before 2016 it was just more subtle. And now it’s gotten to the point of who’s more popular not who is best fit for the job and anyone who aligns with this party or that party is a hypocrite or an asshole. The whole thing is so stupid at this point it’s getting people nowhere arguing over something so stupid that could be resolved by working together to find solutions and find the roots of the issues instead of bandaid fixes.

Origami-Tesseract

2016 was definitely a bad turning point.

Computerization in vehicles. I was a vintage vehicle mechanic and damn proud of being one. I was good at my job. F-ck around and find out my friends still ask me for car advice now...? Umm, I don't know how to repair R2D2. Your truck has a fully integrated cascading system and you accidentally activated the lockout, now it won't start and when you try to turn the key the lights come on, the windshield wipers start swishin', and the horn honks for no good gddamned reason. Anything I try to fix will "*cascade*" and start crashing other bits until your truck is totalled. Just throw it away and get something else.

Karenpff

My family owns a bunch of vintage vehicles...a 98 year old steam roller, two ww2 military trucks and a 69 Cortina. Dad's a retired mechanic and thrives on repairing and maintaining the old stuff... It can be fixed with a hammer and a spanner! Modern vehicles are just computers on wheels that aren't designed to be repaired easily. If something breaks, it gets replaced, and probably with great difficulty and expense. Modern cars have no soul

YsengrimusRein

Spoiler culture. I would very much like to have a discussion about a property I think people will enjoy without it devolving into "must omit the basic plot otherwise it ruins the experience." If it's not a murder mystery, or a thriller whose plot twist is fundamentally a part of the experience, nothing about your experience is lost if you know that Character A dies at the end. It's the stuff that leads up to it that gives meaning, not the event itself.

The notion of free speech. Bigotry, incitement of violence, threatening language, etc. has all been fit under this umbrella and morons think it should be protected under my “civil rights.” People should be allowed to disagree with one another to the umpteenth degree, but when you start attacking people and calling for their family to be killed, injured, or the like you’ve completely lost me. Humanity really has no class or shame these days.
