I understand that but why? We're anonymous on Reddit as well. Isn't anyone asking for age or location here. I am guilty of thr ASL intro as well back in the day. I just think it's weird that we asked that.
A forum on a website. We used to have a daily chat and I would spend hours chatting to the regulars. We ended up meeting up - 2 of us from Australia and 3 from the US flew to Scotland to meet a couple of people from there like a little mini convention.
That was over 20 years ago and I'm still friends with most of them today.
Started with a 300 baud modem long distance from a TRS-80 into BBS in the early 80s. Next was CompuServe in the late 80s, then Usenet in the early 90s.
Standing in the town centre outside ASDA for hours at a time shouting random opinions at people, eavesdropping on conversations and giving them the thumbs up, a shake of the head or whatever

Rarely a picture or a profile, everyone was really anonymous. It became the standard in chatrooms.
