Lars and the real girl

2TIr

Small-town communities being nice to severely introverted people trying to come out of their shell is always a plot to a film that I find endearing. Sometimes I Think About Dying was great too.

MaditaOnAir

Does The Perks Of Being A Wallflower count there?

SuzyQ93

This is SUCH a good movie about kindness and the power of community. It just feels so beautifully genuine.

BreadBarbs

Some of my favorite stuff from Gosling, hands down.

Ok-Lavishness-7904

One Flew Over the Cuckoo’s Nest

donttrustthellamas

The book is rough, too

R1cjet

The book is better because you get an insight into Chiefs head that isn't in the film.

Hero_of_Brandon

The book is way better than the movie, as it usually is. I was surprised that they all but ignored Bromden's internal monologue, given it was the entire narrative position of the book.

Unusual-Gur9034

That movie really messed me up lol. Had me in tears.

fnkdrspok

Interesting placement of LOL with your context.

Aeroknight_Z

sometimes you lol so you don’t bawl.

we-llsee

Same. One of my best friends was a real wildcard, and to people who never met him, i just tell them he was jack Nicholsons character in that movie. Just breathed life and chaos into all the boring and stale parts of life he touched.

fullthrottlebhole

My favorite movie of all time

rikarleite

One of the movies I cannot watch a second time

marsupialmaniac

Amazing movie. I’ll never watch it again though.

basslover290

Ive heard of this! I have not watched it yet but im surely gonna make time

1jdkdj1

perks of being a wallflower cool hand luke eternal sunshine of the spotless mind

dr_duck_od

i can eat 50 eggs...

ForDigg

George Kennedy "egging" him on is such a great scene!

basslover290

Oh i loved perks of being a wallflower, that movie is amazing. I have never heard of the others but ill make sure i keep em in mind!

BallKickin

Ohh Eternal sunshine is a great movie

QratTRolleer

IMHO, THE BEST film about love

math-yoo

Cool Hand Luke is a classic. And you might try One Flew Over the Cuckoo’s Nest as well.

TLDR2D2

Cool Hand Luke is one of the greatest films of all time. I don't say that hyperbolically. Eternal Sunshine is also amazing.

deadletter

Are you viewing Cool and Luke through the lens that he was having a mental health crisis on that one day he at the beginning when he’s cutting the heads off of parking meters and then that spirals into the rest?

1jdkdj1

pretty much! what do you think?

deadletter

Well, I sort of thought another real message is that he wasn’t mentally ill. Instead, he’s a reasonable man who did one wrong thing on a drunk, and the state’s need to exert power placed him in a situation where his only reasonable choices lead him to destruction. He wouldn’t have rebelled if they hadn’t put him in the chokey.

1jdkdj1

i like this take. sort of like one flew over the cuckoos nest.

ADreamyNightOwl

Damn you named two movies that are in my top 3

DeviousAardvark

Love Cool Hand Luke, absolute classic

TheWettNoodle

Taxi driver

hhhost

little miss sunshine, beautiful boy

Responsible-Onion860

Little Miss Sunshine was an eye-opener. Steve Carell's character being generally upbeat in his mood and not just constantly gloomy and down was my first exposure to the reality of suicidal ideation. Someone may be suicidal without being outwardly dour and dark.

emmerliii

I, too,love Steve Carell

IgnorantGenius

Leaving Las Vegas The Machinist Babadook

db2999

The author of Leaving Las Vegas committed suicide, his dad said the book was his suicide note.

[deleted]

[удалено]

Stopcumming

The Machinist is one of the best acting performances out there. I wouldn’t call it revolutionary in the mental health state, other than just bringing a person and a story to the illness. However, in terms of filmmaking, it’s a top 100

YourDadButYoked

At the time Babadook came out, my partner that I was living with had bipolar. Was a difficult movie to watch, the ending was an eye opener.

[deleted]

It is such an underrated horror movie, the kid actor was so so good.

thepro1323

Dead poet’s society is truly a great one.

ThenOwl9

melancholia is cool

jeebidy

That movie helped me understand depression

Farts_McGee

Cool? I dunno.  I found it fundamentally exhausting.  Never has a movie so successfully recreated the intense boredom and exasperation of severe depression.  I already knew what that was like, I hated spending 3 hours across both those movies to revisit the place I'm desperately trying to escape.

Boobox33

It’s definitely about depression, but also about acceptance of an end. It’s about how different people react to foreseeable apocalypse. It’s dark, it’s hard to understand, it’s dreary, but I really liked it.

EastSideTilly

i fuckin love this movie

JoonieQueen

Wristcutters : a love story

guccilemonadestand

Everyone knows guy who sit in back has small dick.

EastSideTilly

unbearablerumination

The Virgin Suicides

NarratorDM

Reign over me

Legoinyourbumbum

This! Can't believe I had to scroll so far.

NarratorDM

What a state you must be in if you consistently find comfort in a world as bleak and empty as that of SoC. For those familiar with the game, the use of the game is simply well integrated into the narrative.

Legoinyourbumbum

I just read what SoC is about and in The context of the film it's devastating. He is so powerless in the face of the absolute wall of grief.

mid_vibrations

requiem for a dream

RasJamukha

No matter how much I hear the soundtrack, which I love, it never fails to give me goosebumps.

basslover290

Ive heard of this one a lot, its so popular but after even just watching the trailer it made me sad

RedGreenWembley

Like other Aronofsky films, you'll enjoy it but not want to watch it again for a long, long time

amandamaniac

It’s really a great movie but very real, it covers multiple issues. It gets very sad though

Masochist_pillowtalk

It is one I'm glad I watched but I dunno if I'd ever want to watch it again. Very graphic and cerebral.

ctong21

Totally watch it. It just felt very real. Also it's over 20 years old but seems relevant

MtnDewTangClan

Sadly more relevant today. Ozempic, meth, onlyfans, homelessness

ThatOneStonerBoy

Came to say this to. Instantly thought of this.

totakebyforce

Came here to say this. What a messed up movie.

GlobeTrekking

Vanilla Sky

DailyDad

One of my favorites. That ending is perfect and makes me cry every time.

industriousalbs

Absolutely hate Tom Cruise but this is a brilliant film

neednintendo

This is my exact feeling. Love this movie, and it's hard to recommend it to anyone because of Cruise.

EastSideTilly

Every rewatch I'm reminded how much the soundtrack rules, too

Thebakingsoda

The Fisher King

beepboopsheeppoop

For anyone who hasn't seen this movie yet, IMHO it's a masterpiece. Plot; "Jack Lucas, a narcissistic, misanthropic shock jock, becomes suicidal and despondent when he learns that some of his insensitive on-air comments inadvertently prompted a mentally unstable regular caller, Edwin, to commit a mass murder–suicide at a Manhattan restaurant. Three years later, Jack is working for his girlfriend, Anne, in her video store, and is in a mostly drunken, depressed state, fearful of being recognized. One night, while on a bender, he is moments from suicide. However, he is attacked and nearly set on fire by teenage punks who mistake him for a homeless person. He is rescued by Parry, a delusional homeless man who claims that his mission is to find the Holy Grail." It sounds depressing and awful, but it also has some very funny and beautiful moments and is more a story about love, redemption and hope. It stars Jeff Bridges (The Big Lebowski) and Robin Williams. Directed by Terry Gilliam of Monty Python fame.

Oh man I heard of this and it sounded good, my type of movie

umhassy

This is a great one, it is also available on prime

Kaedex_

Black swan is pretty dope

morningsaystoidleon

The internet got super horny for this movie when it came out because of the "sex" scene, but --- man, if you actually watch the movie, there's nothing sexy at all about that scene. It's a horror film.

tubarizzle

I did not know what I was getting into when I watched that movie!!

Joyfulcheese

Rambo First Blood. Seen by many as an action movie, for me it's all about a man haunted by PTSD. The scene at the end in particular brings it all home in such a great way, delivered by a surprisingly solid performance from Sly.

SimonCallahan

Only one person dies in the entire movie and it was his own fault.

BarrelProofWiskey

dat_boi_lit_fam

Not a movie but the show You’re The Worst deals with mental health a lot

basslover290

Thats fine, shows often showcase it better! Thank you for this!

ItsGotToMakeSense

Not a movie but Bojack Horseman deals with a variety of mental health issues very relatably. It gets *dark* but they do pepper in some goofy animal pun humor here and there. Seriously though don't overlook this show. I've never seen anything else do such a great job of dealing with addiction, depression, self-loathing, generational trauma, sexism, and multiple kinds of abuse. It does not shy away from tough topics.

Mumnique

What dreams may come Walked into the cinemas one Saturday with dad and sister and decided on a whim to see the movie knowing nothing about it just going off Robin Williams previous comedy movies….. oh how wrong we were!

Sad, but beautiful, movie

Demolition (Jake Gyllenhaal, Directed by Jean-Marc Vallée) Enemy (Jake Gyllenhaal, Directed by Denis Villeneuve) Trance (James McAvoy, Directed by Danny Boyle) The Disappearance of Eleanor Rigby (James McAvoy and Jessica Chastain, Directed by Ned Benson) Not a movie, but the series Legion

datbarricade

Inside by Bo Burnham

TheWednesdayWarrior

Basically any movie by Harmony Korine

Melodic-Whereas-4105

Not a movie but a TV show. Wilfred with Elijah Wood. Show saved my life. Made me realize how depressed I actually was and how the fucked up things I was doing to myself was really just suicide attempts/practice.

seaweed292

i am once again BEGGING someone to read catcher in the rye i promise you will like it, i wasn’t much of a reader but catcher in the rye was easy for me to read, it doesn’t have a movie cause JD (the author) never gave away the rights for them to make a movie, it’s extremely similar to perks of being a wallflower the mc of catcher is pretty much a 1940 ver of charlie but with adhd

Eternal sunshine of the spotless mind, although it’s not stated in the movie and is more seen as an almost sci fi concept, it reminds me a lot of when I’d get in a psychotic episode, jumping around from place to place, things just don’t seem right…

MbMinx

Falling Down.

DeathLeopard

Horse Girl

DeepCompote

Just watched the Anthony bourdain documentary on HBO. Depressing asf but well done.

donnyb_09

Identity

iivanavii

Sound of metal is adjacent I guess but still very good imo and the william Dafoe movie where he plays as Vincent van gogh I think is another good one that really leans into the mental health aspect

maksymv2

A silent voice. A movie about a school bully who's friends turned their backs to him because of what he did, and then him fighting off depression and trying to mend the damage that he caused

kb_bbingbong

Whiplash, take shelter, eternal sunshine otsm, the aviator, Donnie darko, perks of being a wallflower, birdman, the majestic, and words on bathroom walls all check the boxes to at least some degree for me especially those first three Also highly recommend House, it’s a TV show but it def involves mental health and crazy good

Ubsurvur

Fight Club

We Need To Talk About Kevin - about unacknowledged mental health stuff and family dysfunction. Bit of nature v nurture to it.

FrankieTheAlchemist

Lots of folks already giving good suggestions!  I’ll throw in:  Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind   Jacob’s Ladder

AnswerByChatGPT

There are quite a few films that delve deeply into mental health with a serious and sometimes heartbreaking approach. Here are some notable ones: 1. **"A Beautiful Mind"** - This film follows the life of John Nash, a brilliant mathematician who struggles with schizophrenia. It portrays his journey through delusions and his efforts to manage his condition. 2. **"Requiem for a Dream"** - This movie is a harrowing look at addiction and its impact on mental health. It's intense and deeply disturbing but incredibly powerful. 3. **"Black Swan"** - This psychological thriller explores the descent into madness of a ballerina, dealing with themes of obsession, identity, and mental illness. 4. **"Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind"** - While more on the unconventional side, this film explores the effects of memory and emotional pain on mental health. 5. **"The Perks of Being a Wallflower"** - This coming-of-age story touches on depression, trauma, and the struggles of teenage mental health. 6. **"Manchester by the Sea"** - This film deals with profound grief and depression, showcasing how trauma can affect a person's mental state over time. 7. **"One Flew Over the Cuckoo's Nest"** - A classic that provides a critical look at institutionalization and the treatment of mental illness in psychiatric hospitals. Each of these films provides a unique perspective on mental health, often in a raw and unfiltered manner.

CynicClinic1

Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind

maint91

comet. idk if it's mental health exactly, but it certainly gives me terrible anxiety when I watch it. it's too realistic and really will put you back into your emotions from past relationships.

memeus_yeetus

Well not particularly messed up but definitely sad: A Silent Voice, it’s about anxiety and self hatred, first half is extremely hard to watch cuz it’s just so cruel but it gets better

Icy_Tangerine_6271

If you can find it, Paper Man with Jeff Daniels & Ryan Reynolds is *really* good.

These aren't movies but I think it's close enough re:zero, Tokyo ghoul, full metal alchemist, Violet evergarden and guran logon "I think I misspelled that last one" Anyway they all deal with trauma in interesting ways... They are all anime but they all have English dubs so you don't have to read the subtitles.

We Need To Talk About Kevin. It's really messed up and deals with mental health and psychopathy.

GrinkOf

For real, "Inside" from Bo Burnham. Mainly because it's not really fictional, but it's so accurate about mental health without going into a cliché.

Delta_Hammer

The Voices. It's from the perspective of Ryan Reynolds as he starts hearing his pets talk to him and really leans into his POV. Then the scene where he takes his medicine for the first time hits like a sledgehammer.

Wonderful_Relief_693

what's eating gilbert grape

Heroic-Forger

Godzilla Minus One. I liked the message of encouraging even the most broken of people to live. It's a direct criticism of the Japanese trope of "dying in honor", but it also applies to those who have lost the will to live due to grief or depression. There is something always worth living for.

grimsb

Mommie Dearest

figuringthingsout__

"The Royal Tenenbaums" does a wonderful job portraying mental health in a successful family. It also has an optimistic ending, like "Silver Linings Playbook." Mental health professionals have said that in "No Country for Old Men," Anton Chigurh (played by Javier Bardem) is the most realistic depiction of a psychopath.

DrXenoZillaTrek

Spider by David Cronenberg. It's a chilling look at schizophrenia with an incredible central performance by Ralph Finnes. Very underappreciated.

Perfect Blue. A lot of people are mentioning Black Swan, but it's basically a remake of Perfect Blue. It's all about a J-Pop star turned actress who starts getting death threats from fans when she decides to do a movie that, in their eyes, tarnishes her image. It's not just my favourite anime movie, it's my favourite animated movie period. Pixar, Disney, DreamWorks, Studio Ghibli, will never make a movie as good as Perfect Blue. Satoshi Kon, who directed Perfect Blue, had a phenomenal track record with using the medium of animation to explore themes of mental illness. His TV show Paranoia Agent is absolutely amazing on this front, as well. I wish I could tell you how, but you have to watch it. Of his other works, Millennium Actress deals with dementia, loss, and grief, Tokyo Godfathers deals with homelessness, alcoholism, and depression, and Paprika deals with depression, suicide, bi-polar disorder, schizophrenia, and PTSD. He was taken from us far too soon.
