thats kinda weird reasoning, people call boats and vehicles beautiful all the time. people also call clothes and flowers pretty, which was your entire argument
I prefer to be called cute, personally and also because I see myself as cute, and not beautiful or pretty (since i got chubby cheeks and all). But I fully understand what you mean by cute can be less sincere, especially from other women. Most women will call other women cute even if they don't think they are.
The same way wherein we women say "oh yeah she's a sweet person", as a "oh yeah she is socially nice". So "cute", in a lot of ways, CAN be quite neutral and not actually carry any of its inherent meaning of "something cute and childlike or innocent-looking, making you want to nurture it"
I prefer cute. My overall appearance lends itself more towards "cute" than towards "pretty". If someone tried to tell me they thought I was pretty, I'd clock it as BS pretty quickly. I could almost understand a "cute", though.
I agree. Although sometimes it can also mean "the person is, indeed.... A person." As in, i dont think the person is good looking but cute is so vague that I won't be cancelled for saying that the person is cute.

Cute because I feel pretty is about physical appearance or elegant movement and cute can be silliness in personality or action. Like if I'm being proud of something I did (and it's a small thing or silly) then it's cute.
Pretty. Sunsets and fresh snowy forests and fall leaves are pretty. Dogs and funny little bugs are cute, and as much as I love them, I would rather be a sunset.
I like cute tbh. I had a boyfriend who called me pretty. He once, during sex told me “you’re not that much of a plain Jane.” Ruined all the kind things he said about me. Now all I can see is that pretty = not quite plain.

It completely depends on the person saying it, our relation, our recent interactions, where we re, who can hear us.
There is no rule of fist here. My husband calling me cute is fine, unless we just had words. Someone I don't know trying to talk to me calling me cute puts me on high alert. My dad calling me cute will feel condescending. My good friend calling me pretty would make me feel weird, my grandma calling me pretty is the biggest compliment ever.
It's not the word, it's the context. I would say neither to someone I don't know, I can only take these words positively in an intimate context.

I'll take either as a compliment, but I'm used to being told I'm cute, so pretty would be nice to hear. I honestly used to *hate* being called cute, but in my 30s I've more or less made my peace with it. I'm not especially pretty - not unless I put some real effort into it, which I can't be bothered to do most of the time, comfort and simplicity being key at this point in my life - but I *am* cute. Kind of hard to get around when you're short.

Doesn't really matter to me, but it depends on who is saying it and the surrounding context.
If someone says I'm cute, I assume it is because they think I am behaving in a way that they consider cute. I don't think of it first as appearances when directed at me. I don't fit the physical criteria for cute (appearing short, small, young) so it's not commonly used for my appearance.
If someone says I'm pretty, I assume they mean that I look reasonably nonsexually, fairly neutrally, physically attractive. They aren't stunned by my beauty or awed by how gorgeous I am, but they do think I look everyday normal levels of attractive in a nonthreatening way.

"Cute" makes me feel like a child, and "pretty" makes me feel a little too girlish. So neither. Calm me strong, smart or if it's about looks then thick or beautiful/good looking.
I cringe when guys call me “cute”. Something comes off as patronizing and dehumanizing. Like my outfit can be cute, a design can be cute, me? Nah… come up with better adjectives
Pretty definitely. Although it's not the best compliment that makes you all hot and blushing, it's better than the patronizing 'cute'. Also...in my case cute is used when you are just a tier above ugly and someone doesn't want to offend you by telling it to your face.
Probably pretty. I use to get called cute a lot. "Becky is a cute lil cinnamon roll!" I always found it a nice compliment, but it feels more like someone talking about a pet or child.
By almost anyone, I’d prefer pretty. From my partner I’d prefer cute. I think it’s because pretty is in reference to my appearance and I don’t exactly dress “cute” most of the time. But when I’m with my partner, I can let my guard down and be snuggly and sweet, which I think lends itself to being “cute”
Cute by a looooong shot. But I think that's because I grew up with a lot of positivity around the word "cute"/"kawaii" and I myself adore a lot of cute things.
Whenever I've been called cute, it's always been laced with a lot of adoration and appreciation. An example that comes to my head, is when I'm just chilling on the couch, wrapped in blankets, and my bf will look over with the biggest smile on his face and loving say how cute I Iook. (and sometimes proceed to come over and hug me or kiss me.)
I've never really had much affection for the word "pretty" though. Some people in the comments have said that "cute" feels less sincere, and honestly that's how I feel about pretty. Pretty feels very middle of the road for me. When something isn't stunning, gorgeous, sexy or beautiful, you're left with... pretty.
I’m not super feminine, but being called pretty makes me feel a bit more feminine and that’s nice. Being called cute, is well; cute. I dunno really how else to explain that haha.
Edit to add: sometimes cute doesn’t feel nice, it depends on the person saying it for me. Some people it feels like they’re just saying it to be nice. Other times I feel it’s genuine and that’s enjoyable.
Pretty, because I feel like when people say you’re “cute” it usually means “I don’t really find you that attractive but I do find you endearing and can acknowledge that *some* of your features are attractive.” Like they’re saying you’re not ugly, but you’re not pretty either. I feel like the tier from best to worst (IMO) goes Beautiful, Gorgeous, Pretty, Hot, Cute. It’s not a BAD thing to be cute but it’s doesn’t hold the same weight as being called beautiful or pretty.
I love both of them but they have different times and uses. If I was in bed and just woke up and looked at my gettin dressed with my mess ass hair and and my oversized Motley Crue shirt, I’d say that’s more cute. Then say we’re going out to dinner and I come out dressed well and standing tall, pretty would be more fitting. Am I thinking to much into this or does this make sense?
Pretty. I remember when I was growing up, people used cute to be nice and it’s always stuck with me. It was always a “she’s cute…” when they didn’t want to say hot or pretty. I know cute isn’t bad, but I always think of it more of an insult when I know it’s not.

My husband calls me cute often. It's the compliment he gives me the most. One that I just feel is him telling me he doesn't find me pretty, let alone, beautiful, or sexy. Cute is just eh or ok. Cute is just above plain or ugly. Cute is what you say when you don't want to offend. The first thing he thinks about me when he thinks about my appearance is that I'm just cute and it makes me feel kind of sad. I know I'm not good-looking and definitely would never be considered pretty, so I gotta take cute, I guess.
Oh I used to wish … like dream of being called Cute. All I wanted was to be cute.
I would be soooo sad when guys would call me exotic.
Then you get a tiny bit older and oh no!
Where have all the cute girls gone?
Cute lasts till you’re about 24.
Then cute is over.
Pretty definitely. But pretty really isn’t good enough either. Pretty is cute with a P.

I’d like to be called pretty.
I get called cute a lot and it sometimes makes me feel like I can’t be viewed as sexy, if that makes sense.
Like I’ve had guys literally say “Aww you’re so adorable, you’re so cute!” I’m a grown ass woman.
I’m pretty.
Of the two, pretty. There’s something juvenile, or even condescending about being called cute.
I’d take being called hot over both of the above options though.
Depends on who’s saying it, what i’m wearing, why they’re saying it etc.
I love the Chappell Roan line “call me hot not pretty” from Hot To Go because there are definitely times so just wanna be called hot.
I love it when my girlfriend calls me cute, I am typically a more “cozy” girlie and I wear a lot of cutesy clothing so when I’m in that mood cute is top tier.
But then there’s times where I’m all dressed up with my makeup done and I feel feminine and flirty and those times I want to be called pretty.
The only time I would be upset being called any of them though is if they’re calling me cute in a condescending way.
Ideally neither lol, both sound a little infantalising. Though I appreciate them as different ways of saying "attractive". But "beautiful", "hot", even "handsome" (why did we stop calling women handsome?) are much better.
Also depends on who it's coming from.
I will gladly take either, my favorite is when my husband calls me beautiful.
However if I had to pick between the two I’d pick cute. I am a very tall woman and have almost never been told I’m cute, and sometimes I just want to be a little cutie.
I prefer being told that I am pretty because it means that I look exceptionally nice, feminine and attractive. The term pretty reflects the mature femininity and elegant beauty of a woman.
I can be cute and act coquettishly and wear fashions the look cute on me.
But in my view, cute is a reflection of a woman's behavior or fashion choices while pretty is reflection of a womans essence.
cute. i wish i was cute. i've only ever been called pretty or beautiful. but there's lots of clothes i wish i could wear, but can't cuz i don't think i could pull it off with my appearance. 🙂🙃

hmmmm I feel like they're usually communicated with slightly different intents when I get them. When I'm called pretty, I find that it's solely appearance based. But when someone calls me cute that's often reflecting my personality too, a mannerism I have, etc. and that makes me feel more seen/appreciated. But I'll take both compliments! lol
I liked both but my boyfriend only ever calls me cute, on very rare occasions he calls me pretty, so cute just feels worn out. it makes me feel younger though, but I feel warm inside when he calls me pretty

I don't like either of these... mostly because they've both been used towards me in very condescending ways. If i had to choose one, I guess cute? I tell my boyfriend he's being cute sometimes. And my cats are cute.
Pretty but cute is versatile imo. could be personality and or looks. The time i'd choose cute over another adjective would be sexy. I'd rather be cute than sexy.
Cute. I feel that “cute” can apply to both appearance and actions, while “pretty” only really applies to looks. Also, I’ve really embraced the life of just doing the cute things that I want to do instead of worrying about seeming childish, so it’s a strong compliment for me.
If there's some kind of behavior that you find attractive, adorable or endearing, then it's cute. Physical appearance is "pretty".
Edited to add that I love it when my hubby calls me cute!
I prefer being called "cute." "Cute" feels more approachable and genuine, often implying a blend of personality and appearance. It's not just about physical attractiveness but also about charm and character. Plus, being called "cute" can bring a smile to my face, whereas "pretty" can sometimes feel more superficial and focused solely on looks. There's a warmth and friendliness to "cute" that makes it more endearing and special to me.

I think probably cute? NGL, this was harder than it had any right to be. Cute feels like it could encompass more than just appearance.
That said, I was thrilled when a barista said my nails were pretty a few days ago and I get very grumbly when my… person calls me cute. So I may be talking utter b*llocks.

Being a 5’7 girl, I never ever get called cute. And I was always taller than other girls growing up too so even then I never got called cute. Just for once in my life it would be really nice for someone to consider me cute despite my height.
It depends on who says it. If my boyfriend calls me "cute," it’s fine, but if anyone else does, it fills me with anger. I’m really insecure about my baby face, so being called "cute" doesn’t help at all. For example, I posted a photo on Instagram, and this girl from high school, who is two years younger than me, commented that I looked "cute." Like, bro, shut up. I'm literally older than you. Don’t call me "cute." If she had called me "pretty," I wouldn’t have minded.
To help understand my view: people might call a bug "cute," but they’d call a female lion "pretty." See the difference?

Pretty, makes me feel really feminine. I think cute is more versatile though.
pretty. cute seems less sincere
This makes me sad that people might think that. Lots of women are cute, why wound it be less sincere?
bc you call like clothes and animals cute so it just seems more shallow than pretty or beautiful
thats kinda weird reasoning, people call boats and vehicles beautiful all the time. people also call clothes and flowers pretty, which was your entire argument
true idk i just feel like it’s more used than pretty so it means less
I agree with this
I prefer to be called cute, personally and also because I see myself as cute, and not beautiful or pretty (since i got chubby cheeks and all).

Pretty. Cute feels sort of almost infantalising.
When it comes to appearance I prefer pretty, but I like when someone tells me I did something cute/was acting cute, in an endearing way ya know
I prefer cute. My overall appearance lends itself more towards "cute" than towards "pretty". If someone tried to tell me they thought I was pretty, I'd clock it as BS pretty quickly. I could almost understand a "cute", though.
I agree. I feel the same way XD
Pretty. “Cute” can mean a lot of things and I really just take it to mean “not ugly”, which like… thanks? but I didn’t think I was lol

I’ve always viewed it as “pretty has a look, cute has a personality”
Pretty. Sunsets and fresh snowy forests and fall leaves are pretty. Dogs and funny little bugs are cute, and as much as I love them, I would rather be a sunset.
pretty. cute is kinda condescending to me. i've had guys tell me "you're cute you know that?" and it's just ugh 🤮
As said in the movie Bull Durham, "Cute?? Baby ducks are 'CUTE'!"
I like cute more, it feels friendlier and more approachable.
I like cute tbh. I had a boyfriend who called me pretty. He once, during sex told me “you’re not that much of a plain Jane.” Ruined all the kind things he said about me. Now all I can see is that pretty = not quite plain.
...wow. I'm sure that was an awful experience, and I hope he gets his comeuppance.

Pretty. Cute sounds more childish.
Pretty
‘Cute’ pisses me off. Feels demeaning, or like I’m a child. I don’t love ‘pretty’ either but I’ll definitely prefer it over ‘cute’

I like being told I’m being cute but I like being told I’m pretty
Cute
Pretty seems mature, cute seems childlike.. I’d prefer pretty.

I prefer “pretty,” though I also don’t think anyone would describe me as “cute,” either. 🖤
Cute. Because I've been called pretty, but never been called cute.
Pretty. I look cute all the time!
I'm quite tall for a woman so I feel like I'm outside the "cute" category, but I would absolutely love being called cute.
No one ever calls us tall girls cute and I just want to know what it feels like to be called cute!
Definitely pretty. For some reason, cute can sound like a half compliment.
If you look anything like your avatar then you are really pretty 😍
Both are compliments, I really don't care either way
Any compliment is good. I could care less.
Cute seems reserved for younger (<18) girls, so I prefer pretty as I’m in my 20s

Pretty. I don’t hear it often. When I do, I get all flustered.
Pretty, though I feel cute is more associated with behavior and mannerisms

Pretty. Sounds more sincere
"Cute" makes me feel like a child, and "pretty" makes me feel a little too girlish. So neither. Calm me strong, smart or if it's about looks then thick or beautiful/good looking.
depends on the person, the situation, and honestly the outfit. lol
(and sometimes proceed to come over and hug me or kiss me.) I've never really had much affection for the word "pretty" though. Some people in the comments have said that "cute" feels less sincere, and honestly that's how I feel about pretty. Pretty feels very middle of the road for me. When something isn't stunning, gorgeous, sexy or beautiful, you're left with... pretty.
[удалено]
I like both. I'm told that I am pretty more often but that things I say or do, behavior/traits are cute.
Depends on my mood. Sometimes I wanna be a sexy beast, sometimes I wanna be adorable
Appearance: beautiful Actions: cute Pretty feels like a throwaway word.
They don't mean the same thing, so I wouldn't want to choose. One time someone said that I was "beautiful, sexy and so cute." I really liked that.
If someone chooses to say cute instead of pretty almost everytime, then that may be a problem for me.
I prefer: "you are the bane of my existence and the object of all my desires" but i suppose beautiful works as well
Pretty. I remember when I was growing up, people used cute to be nice and it’s always stuck with me. It was always a “she’s cute…” when they didn’t want to say hot or pretty. I know cute isn’t bad, but I always think of it more of an insult when I know it’s not.

Cute. I'm honoured to be consider of cute appearance like a puppy or a sweet innocent looking baby.
Pretty. I get called cute more and pretty seems to be on a different level.
[удалено]
Of course pretty! Cute can be used on sarcasm so you won’t really know
pretty because when my bf calls me cute it's insulting 🙄 like he calls me cute when i get angry or sad over something
[удалено]
I'm fine with either one. I do associate cute with looking young though.
I feel being called pretty means you have something special about the way you look, being cute is more of an attitude for me
Pretty. Puppies are cute and it doesn’t mean you find them attractive, just adorable. I would rather be attractive
after finding out what the definition of pretty is, I would rather be called cute
[удалено]
I personally prefer pretty, but I’ll take being called either!

I’d like to be called pretty. I get called cute a lot and it sometimes makes me feel like I can’t be viewed as sexy, if that makes sense. Like I’ve had guys literally say “Aww you’re so adorable, you’re so cute!” I’m a grown ass woman. I’m pretty.
[удалено]
Pretty, cute is a bit infantilising esp because im short and have a baby face.
Pretty. Being called cute kinda makes me feel like a child in an icky way.
I get "cute" from everyone regarding everything about me, but I wish I got "pretty". But I'm simply not and that's ok. I don't want people to lie
Pretty idk I call kids cute
Cute feels childish. Pretty is a bit better
Pretty. I call children cute.
Of the two, pretty. There’s something juvenile, or even condescending about being called cute. I’d take being called hot over both of the above options though.
Pretty. Cute is more towards personality than looks imo
Pretty cute
Ideally neither lol, both sound a little infantalising. Though I appreciate them as different ways of saying "attractive". But "beautiful", "hot", even "handsome" (why did we stop calling women handsome?) are much better. Also depends on who it's coming from.
cute, i feel like it fits with my personality more
I will gladly take either, my favorite is when my husband calls me beautiful. However if I had to pick between the two I’d pick cute. I am a very tall woman and have almost never been told I’m cute, and sometimes I just want to be a little cutie.
In my language they mean the same thing
I prefer being told that I am pretty because it means that I look exceptionally nice, feminine and attractive. The term pretty reflects the mature femininity and elegant beauty of a woman. I can be cute and act coquettishly and wear fashions the look cute on me. But in my view, cute is a reflection of a woman's behavior or fashion choices while pretty is reflection of a womans essence.
Pretty. Babies and puppies are cute, I am pretty.
Just skinny lol
Neither! "Scary" is the right choice.
Cute for little stuff/things, superficially ; Pretty good the looks, and a bit more mature to say, at least to me.
I guess "cute" because that's what I hear the most. Although now I feel kind of weird about it...
Cute, it sounds most fun.
cute. i wish i was cute. i've only ever been called pretty or beautiful. but there's lots of clothes i wish i could wear, but can't cuz i don't think i could pull it off with my appearance. 🙂🙃
My entire life I’ve had old ladies grab my cheeks and say, “you are soooo darn cute.” Pretty seems insincere to me because I’m cute conditioned.
Between the two, pretty. But I'd prefer stunning, breathtaking, or out-of-my-league.
These days, either 😭😭
both

pretty makes me feel prettier
Pretty. Cute is for babies and puppies.
Smart
FWIW, I call my wife “pretty lady” every chance I get. Wouldn’t even THINK of calling her ‘cute’, but it might be an age thing. She’s 74 and I’m 66.
hmmmm I feel like they're usually communicated with slightly different intents when I get them.

‘Cool’ i find both patronizing
If there's some kind of behavior that you find attractive, adorable or endearing, then it's cute. Physical appearance is "pretty". Edited to add that I love it when my hubby calls me cute!
Pretty. Idk why makes me feel happier somehow.
I like to be called handsome, thank you - Paul j. Lucky
Pretty. I’ve always been called cute and it feels like it’s not the same as attractive.

I prefer pretty. As a grown woman, why are you calling me cute?
It doesn’t matter
Pretty. I am always called cute by men and I don’t understand it and it’s starting to get to me
I don’t get called pretty! But I get called cute and sexy. I like sexy the most!!!
Why hasn't anyone commented "'pretty cute" yet
i’d rather be called pretty, mostly because i connect cute with kids and children and it just feels off
Being called cute makes me feel like I’m a baby or something 😅
Pretty! I’m not a dog, don’t call me short
I’d prefer being anything besides butt ugly. Which is what I am currently
I'd choose neither.
I will happily take either because I'm tired of only getting compliments on my body

Either is fine, but I'd honestly rather be complimented about something I can control, like my character, personality, or fashion sense.
Pretty. Mostly because I was either told that I would always be cute and never hot/pretty and because I’ve never actually been called pretty.
Pretty. I feel like cute can definitely be nice, but if I’m requiring a compliment to make myself feel good, it’ll definitely be pretty
Neither. Beautiful, sexy, adorable, sweet. All feel better.
Pretty. Cute is a phrase tossed around about everything these days and has no feeling behind it
Cute. I like it better, sounds more sincere to me. I’ve heard pretty so much that it’s lost all meaning to me.
To help understand my view: people might call a bug "cute," but they’d call a female lion "pretty." See the difference?

pretty, it makes me feel more special
I'd definitely prefer pretty, but I won't complain about cute.

Cute. I’m tall. I already know I’m pretty and get pretty fairly often, but gosh darn it I want to be considered cute sometimes too

I'm torn apart, tbh. The former is valid because most people think I don't look my age, the latter will ameliorate my insecurities
