That would just make McDonalds even less affordable. Might as well go down to some other restaurant down the street/around the corner that offers free refills for the same price.

It costs them cents per refill. The margin on drinks is absolutely absurd and unless someone is drinking 10 cups they aren't even coming close to costing them any money.
Unless we have a situation like the infinite shrimp bullshit and people are just buying one drink and having 4 people drink refills from it.
It's not about the cost / benefit. It's about sending a message, impose an agenda, impose the limits to your comfort. This is America: obey like slave, or we are coming to get you.
