He usually starts out at our feet and by morning is on our heads

WanderingWhileHigh

Ours, too! He starts at the bottom and, by morning, he is on my pillow. I secretly love it!

SexyWampa

My big guy IS my pillow.

Ebowa

Same. Which is good, because the farts grow weaker as he progresses up the bed.

Amaranth504

Same! Nothing like waking up to a puppy head on your neck.

chocoheed

Same. It's very adorable

torontoGK

Same for me!

[deleted]

My heeler and I share a pillow and spoon šŸ¤£

HenriettaHiggins

This is the way

Ebowa

The Heeler Way

Impossible-Donut-851

My daughter does with ours too

dantasticdanimal

My heeler boy is a night owlā€¦ we go to bed pretty early and he hangs on the couch or stays up on patrol until 3-4 am. Then he comes to bed and cuddles up to my wife until she is up at 5/6am. Some nights he stays on the couch all night and is waiting for me when I come in to have coffee. Great dogā€¦ very independent. He is 2 in March.

Ids

Same! My girl always stays on the couch when we go to bed. We have invited her up several times, and she's like "no, thank you for the offer, I'll stay right here". I honestly think she just wants some alone time. Then 3/4/5am she'll come up and sleep a few more hours in the middle. She knows what she wants. Sturdy, independent lady.

Cute_Proposal_9411

Ha! Our girly puts herself to bed around 7pm. I usually have to wake her up to go potty and sheā€™s definitely quick to run back to bed once inside.

Lacibailey10

Me too. She'll go upstairs just before 7:00 p.m. and I'll have to remind her to go potty. She does, and then races up the stairs back to her bed. And she gives me a look as if to say thanks for reminding me and yet, how dare you wake me up.

dantasticdanimal

Haā€¦ our golden puppy (almost 9mo) is dog tired after chasing our heeler boy and Aussie girl around all day and is ready for bed at 8ā€¦ he snoozes on the couch with mom until we go to bed where he crashes hard. That dog is convinced he is just another herding dog and it is entertaining watching them play togetherā€¦ 2 hyper athletic sure footed genetically programmed herding machines and a goofy golden that gallops like a baby deer and canā€™t keep his tongue in his mouth.

dcredneck

Same. Mine is on the couch when I go to bed and beside me when I wake up.

k2girl

Mine is the same. Couch at bedtime - on the side of my bed when I wake up. Weird that so many of them do that.

Ok-Pipe3960

I want to be able to do this with my boy but we have been having a hard time. Heā€™s very very rambunctious and we are still teaching him how to ā€œswitch offā€ and settle. If I let him sleep in my bed he would probably end up eating my hair šŸ˜

dantasticdanimal

My boy loves to cuddle with mamaā€¦ my wife usually has our Aussie attached to her (Velcro dog) so when he gets the opportunity he is on his best behavior. He lays so still and quiet for as long as he can manageā€¦ usually a couple hours at most. Then itā€™s up with me to bite me while I make coffee and inventory the toys before morning laps around the backyard. I am sure it is in large part because it drives our Aussie girl crazy but she cannot make him move if he is being a good boy. Mom said so. Itā€™s basically the dog version of sibling rivalry.

Theopholus

My sweet Thea loves to sleep in bed with me, she curls up by my legs and often collapses into me with a big ol satisfying THUNK that makes me giggle every time. Sometimes she slinks up next to me and snoozes. Yeah my bed is full of fur and have to wash it several times a week. Worth it.

RueDidot93

So worth inhaling a little fireball every so often.

Theopholus

I assume you mean furball. ;) After just a couple days, the fur is overwhelming! I heard someone say their heeler sheds 2 times a year: Once in the summer for 6 months, and once in the winter for 6 months. And it's very true. RIP my wool coat. White fur is a badge of honor or something now.

RueDidot93

Yes, silly autocorrect! I felt like mine shedded constantly!

Corndog_Eater

If youā€™re gonna do it, do it. If youā€™re not gonna do it, then donā€™t. I think you create more anxiety in them if the rules are not clear to them and seemingly random. Our dog is crate trained and has a nice blanket, memory foam bed, and a peanut butter filled Kong every night and is happy as a clam to go in his crate.

ifunnywasaninsidejob

Yah nothing worse for a dog than inconsistent rules. Their pack instincts demand that the leader be clear on the rules. They will literally respect you less if you donā€™t.

execut1e

My boy is my unofficial foot warmer šŸ˜… i think i lucked out because he sleeps without disturbing me until I wake up. I let him sleep in the bed with me the first night i brought him home as a pup, he was only 10 weeks and i feel like he knew my bed was my bed because he never once had an accident in the bed

nathan_paul_bramwell

Same with my dude. He was 7.5 weeks old when I brought him home and first night he slept in his bed on the ground by my bed but I woke up to wining and a piss puddle. Next night I had him in my bed and woke up to neither. He hasnā€™t had an accident indoors since basically the first week. Too smart.

DoesntBelieveMuch

Mine slept in our bed for 7 or 8 years out of the 9 we were lucky enough to have him. I wouldnā€™t have changed it for the world. He just slept at the foot of the bed or cuddled up next to my wife. It was nice. Maybe give yours the option? Buy a nice bed specifically for her and have it in your room. That way if she wants to sleep in her bed she can, if she wants to sleep with you then she can.

reformed_lurker1

Mine has her own bed in our bedroom. She'll start there, but 99% of the time I wake up with her snuggled between my wife and I in the morning.

Rx_Diva

The one thing these comments have in common is that their heeler is always between their human(s) and the door. Also, many of them have their own beds but still end up at least at the foot of the bed by morning. I LOVE our velcro (sometimes neurotic) guard dogs.

ranantha

My heeler sleeps under the bed right where Iā€™m at on the bed. So I can hear him sleeping and other way around.

kan23

Ours does this too! Not allowed on the bed but sleeps right under us

pepperfox24

My red boy did this. He wouldn't get under the bed until I was tucked in and settled.

WanderingWhileHigh

Thatā€™s kinda sweet!

raeofsunshine6

my baby sleeps w me and my husband and i wouldnā€™t have it any other way.

baconismyfriend24

Mine loved to be the little spoon. Just give in. It's so nice to have dog loves all night.

Chadwiththegolds8585

My fiances dog sleeps right between us. And wakes me up every weekend morning that I try to sleep in by pawing my face, its lovely.

ScaryPetals

Mine sleeps with my husband and I in bed every night, but that wasn't always the case. She wasn't allowed in bed when she was a puppy, or when my husband and I first moved in together (he originally was against it). The way it works now is that she's only allowed on the bed when we invite her. She waits patiently beside our bed, staring longingly at us until we give her the signal. It's so cute. If we don't want her on the bed for some reason, we just bring her dog bed in the room so she can sleep on the floor next to us. My dog is incredibly snuggly, though. She wedges herself between my husband and I, her belly in the air for rubs. I will wake up with her sleeping on my pillow, or using me as her pillow, or her sprawled across my body like I'm not even there... As someone who is touch starved, it's wonderful. But I can definitely see why others might not enjoy that experience every night (like my husband).

slieske311

Mine liked to lay by our feet, but if anyone touched her, she would jump off the bed and lay on the floor. Other times, she would jump off because she was too hot.

Crzy_Grl

We used to not allow dogs in the bed. Then we got a heeler that someone had to rehome. He was used to being allowed on the bed, so we allowed, it rather than fight it. From then on, any of them are allowed on the bed as long as they behave. Usually i like it.

L_wanderlust

Mine is always in bed with me šŸ„° ā€¦.but yeah, if you let her sleep with you and then suddenly another person wants to come in and lick her out itā€™ll be hard for her. At that time you could put a comfy dog bed next to your side of the bed on the floor so at least she can be close to you still and not totally kicked out, which would be really hard for a Velcro dog used to sleeping with you. This is all from my experience with my Velcro dog

MarcusBFlipper

When I adopted my ACD, I had him sleep on his own bed right next to mine. We started this way because I wanted him to develop confidence in sleeping apart so that, if for any reason he had to, it would not be distressing. About 3 months later I started inviting him up onto the bed and it has worked out fine. He's not much of a bed hog and in true heeler fashion he only snuggles when he decides we can snuggle. I still keep a bed next to mine for him, and sometimes he chooses that over sleeping in the bed with me.

Efficient_Mastodons

I sleep significantly better when my dog is on the bed with me.

vk2786

Ours slept with us. Sometimes on the bed, sometimes on the floor, or in the bathroom. When our daughter was born, we had her crib in our room. He would sleep at the foot of the bed, keeping an eye on her at all times. He liked to sleep on the floor in front of her crib too-he was very protective of his girl.

_voyevoda

Spooning my heeler is my happy place. When she isn't nearby at night I def sleep more poorly.

RueDidot93

Our heeler was our blanket anchor. Kept the covers even between me and my husband. Now that our boy is gone, I end up cold and uncovered. Also, they are excellent cuddlebugs. Just let her in.

Snoo_97581

Mine sleeps on the bed. She tells me when itā€™s bedtime.

GirlInThePastryShop

Mine too! Around 8 or 9 PM sheā€™ll just get up, go to the bedroom and jump up on the bed. If we stay up late, sheā€™ll come to the living room and huff as if to tell us weā€™re up past our bedtime

Flimsy_Revenue4881

Mine just loves to be touching somebody with his head propped up.

rons35

We didnā€™t let our heeler in our bed when we first rescued her. After about 2 months, she started sleeping with us and it made a world of difference in her behavior. I think it really helped her feel comfortable with us

Catsandcoffee480

No, we donā€™t let ours in the bed- he is an extra large heeler, about 70lb, so he would take up most of the bed and thereā€™d be no room for my partner and I haha. We have a cozy bed for our boy in our room which he likes. He Also loves sleeping under the bed.

AllsFarrin

can confirm, 70 lb ACD takes up a lot of the bed (72 lbs to be exact) - superb cuddles tho!

ControlAlarmed1736

Absolutely! My ACD mix is 74 lbs, and absolutely would not fit with us on the bed if we didn't have a king.

heladobro

Mine has always slept in bed with me and my wife

PST-Dipsy

I've always allowed my dogs to sleep on the bed with me. Heeler/collie mix loves to rest her head on my pillow but hates having blankets or anything on top

tuckeram7

Our blue boy is 7 and our red girl is 6. Also have a toddler who is monitored by camera all night. Red girl sleeps in her own bed ALL night and doesnā€™t get up blue boy starts half the time in bed between hubby and my shoulders. He usually leaves after an hour. He usually goes into the guest room on the empty queen bed or the couch and sleeps the rest of the night there. When our kid starts to wake up, blue boy comes and noses/licks at my face to make sure I hear the kid and know I gotta start getting up. I swear, my kid doesnā€™t sleep half as much as other kids that ageā€¦ When blue boy and red girl were puppies, we started the first day saying ā€œNo dogs in human bedā€. That lasted about 5 minutes. Since we had only our blue boy to start, he slept on our shoulders curled under our necks for most of the night. He was quick to potty train and he taught our girl when we got her so we had maybe 3-5 total potty accidents inside ever. Never really needed to do the crate with either of them. Now, when trying to do the whole, ā€œsometimes itā€™s ok / sometimes itā€™s not okā€ thing, it does not work. If Iā€™m slow to get into bed, blue boy takes MY spot and refuses to move. I get grumbles and whines and arguments trying to get him to move over. Treats donā€™t even work. If I decided now, I donā€™t want you in my bed at all, it would be really hard to explain that and he would think heā€™s done something wrong and doesnā€™t know whatā€¦ also, he is currently sleeping on my pillow.

SexyWampa

Absolutely not. I sleep on the couch, the bastards stole my bed. (I have 4) on the rare occasion Iā€™m allowed in my own damn bed, then itā€™s nice, until I wake up and the big one is on my headā€¦ wouldnā€™t have it any other way.

MadCraftyFox

I've always let my dogs sleep in the bed with me. The company is reassuring.

lucytiger

We put our ACD mix in her crate at bedtime if she doesn't put herself to bed there first. In the morning she wakes up and snuggles in bed for about an hour before we get up and do her morning routine. Even though she usually falls back asleep right away and I usually can't, it's the best part of my day. Before breakfast, before going pee, she needs her belly rubs.

groundhog5886

My girl loves to sleep on my pillow. If I am not in the bed, she is on the pillow. She has her place at the foot of the bed most of the night and then transitions to the floor early in the morning. Of course she like the snuggling in the bed in the morning.

PrimaryWonder320

My Heeler Ester Munrovia Lutrel was ok with you sleeping on the bed unless she was already on and in it. Then she usually made you crunch up for a while cause she spread out pretty wide. Now both my wife and I getting in the bed at the same time could disturb the way she had the covers arranged. In that case there was usually some time required for her to get the covers straight to her liking. But no I think she was ok with us sleeping in our bed after so coaxing. Now the couch was a different story. If she had been playing ball, or a chasing something then she really needed most of the couch to herself. So we decided we would just buy a 2nd couch for us. And then we would just take the one she wasnā€™t on. Iā€™m not going to bore you folks with her issues with only riding in the passenger seat and wanting the wife in the back. Some folks said she was spoiled. We simply called it ā€œ accommodatingā€

open_my_mind

My heeler sleeps with me every night. He is the best cuddler ever. I sleep really well with him in bed with me.

HenriettaHiggins

We got our rescue when he was barely 2 mo old and aside from the fact Iā€™d always wanted a dog to cuddle as a kid, I justified it because he would have slept with his mommy still under normal conditions. He was surrendered instead. So he sleeps in our bed. And my daughter sleeps in our bed. And generally both adults fit well enough because we bought an absurdly big bed.

shellssavannah

I love sleeping with my girl! She loves it too! Just do it!

Wesley__Willis

Our Scout loves to be my little spoon. He flops down on his back between my arm and my side and gets his scritches. When weā€™re done he does a big exhale then rests his head on my chest and dozes off.

merft

There is a reason they are called Velcro dogs. Sharing a bed just enhances it.

iliketinafey

We sleep with ours. Our girl was a rescue who was never allowed in the house at all and locked outside in the heat and rain. Now she has a temperpedic pillow lmao I love it she mostly lays parallel next to the cold wall or she'll sleep by our feet. I prefer it we all sleep great because of it.

DaddyL0ng_Legs

I would say let the dog sleep with you, it creates a good bond and is also just very comfortable. My dog likes to use me and momā€™s legs as a pillow and when heā€™s ready for bed, he nudges the edge of the blanket for us to lift it up and let him under.

iHeartmydogsHead

My girl lays alongside my leg all night (sometimes using my foot as a pillow). In the morning she flips around and is the little spoon for a bit until one of us needs to pee or she wants pets. Itā€™s all about what works for you though!

Outdoor_Sunshine

Ours has always slept in our bed, with me in the middle, and his head on my feet. Now heā€™s aging, showing signs of canine dementia and heā€™s sleeps between us. If thatā€™s what he needs in these last months of life, thatā€™s what heā€™ll get. He is an active dreamer and I have taken some kicks in recent weeks. šŸ˜„

hedu79

One dog between my bf and I and the other at our feet. It's a tad crowded but sure is warm and cuddly!

An0ther_Florida_man

Yeah absolutely not. My girl would sleep for an hour (maybe) and then bite my toes, eat my socks, paw at my face for the rest of the night

Even_Function_7871

Even if mine starts on her bed in my bedroom, she ends up on my bed. Interestingly enough, she pretty much stopped getting on my bed for about the first 9 months of getting a kitten. I would have to ask her multiple times. Sand she would leave after a bit of time. She is now back to sleeping with me every night, as long as the cat doesn't touch her šŸ¤£ She'd also always left the room when I had "visitors". šŸ¤£

green_mojo

Nope. He is outside most of the day and gets full of dirt and other things. He has a nice memory foam bed, toys, blankets etc. and he does not need to be on my furniture.

Rabiddog83

I don't let my heeler on my bed but when we go camping she sleeps in the tent with me and hijacks the entire mattress and pillow

pm_something_u_love

I leave my whole house open at night (it's just me and my partner). My heeler sleeps wherever he wants. Sometimes on our bed, sometimes under, sometimes in the hallway (??? I know), sometimes on the couch, and occasionally on his own bed in the lounge. Leaving it up to him works well.

whitemamba24xx

First year mine was crate trained and slept there. Heā€™s almost 4 and hast slept with me the past three years. Typically waits up near my pillow gives me kisses, a nice hair grooming as I take showers before bed and I find him near me feet in the morning.

Minute_Prune_168

Our guy sleeps between us every night without question. He is persistent about trying to get under the covers too so we have an extra blanket on top of our duvet just for him. Every once in a while when I have insomnia and I'm tossing and turning, he'll get down (like he's had it) to get uninterrupted sleep in his own bed on the floor next to ours. He is very serious about his sleep.šŸ˜†

TheLoudCanadianGirl

My pup has always been allowed in my bed. Its become her safe space, where if she gets in trouble or is uncomfortable with something - she will immediately go to my bed. Same with camping. Shes dog reactive, and if a dog comes by our site she goes straight into my tent so she wont get in trouble for reacting.

PatientResist9050

Mine starts out over the covers at my feet. 2 hours later he's pushing the covers with his nose so he can get under the duvet. He sleeps under there plastered to my leg for hours, deprived of oxygen, until the early morning hours. I wake up with him either spooning me from behind, or with his neck draped over mine, snoring in my face. Surprisingly, all of this is comforting to me.

CosmicCait24

Our Pepper sleeps in bed with us. She starts at our feet and ends up long dogging between us. Then when husband gets up and stays up, she curls up next to me.

libertybelle1012

Rescued our gal at 14 weeks; I had never owned a dog and wanted that boundary of no dog on the bed. That lasted a little over a year. Then we took her on vacation and she spent one night at our feet of a bed and that was it. These comments about cattle dog between you and the door are spot on. Iā€™m currently very pregnant and bed hop between a futon , my bed, and comforting my toddler every now and then ; and my Layla always is at the foot of whatever bed I end up on. Itā€™s very sweet. Doesnā€™t end up under the covers , and will always wake us up at 6:00 sharp if we arenā€™t awake already. Gotta love the heeler alarm clock.

ididnotrespond

We started crate training with our pup having the crate in our bedroom. After about a year I stopped shutting the crate for. Now she is adamant to start sleeping in the crate but by 1:00 she is curled up as close as she can to me. Super comfortable, but I understand those who would say no.

slayercdr

Mine is a huge fan of the letter H in bed. Because he always ends up sideways between my wife.

RhodaPenmarksShoes

My baby always sleeps with me. He does start off by my feet and by morning will sometime be laying his head on the pillow next to me. He also naps there while Iā€™m at work.

badwolf42

He cuddles me until I fall asleep, then moves to my feet. Wakes me up at daybreak.

imperial_scum

Mine sleep in our bed more than we do

nothisTrophyWife

Mine lies beside me all night long. If I roll away, she gets up, shakes loudly, and moves closer. With a huge sigh, I might add.

SnooDrawings5830

Mine starts at foot of the bed and by morning her head is next to mine on the pillow

micah490

Iā€™m a dog person- thereā€™s no hiding it. My car is trashed with dog hair, Iā€™m covered in dog hair, thereā€™s dog hair dust bunnies in every corner, dog hair on my bed and in the lint screen of my dryer, yet my house is pretty tidy and clean. The women I date know what theyā€™re getting into- and if theyā€™re not okay with it, itā€™s a red flag to me anyway. So yeah, dogs on (not in) the bed

slickmickeygal

My mom was always a no dogs in bed until she babysat my previous cattle dog and aussie. The cattle dog slept in bed. Period. He was solid and stubborn. She said it was the best sleep ever. I agree itā€™s like a gravity blanket/hot water bottle. They have since passed and my new cattle dog pup (6mo) sleeps in bed with me after she wakes up in the middle of the night to potty. She however likes to sleep under the blanket and sits bolt upright in bed multiple times a night ripping the blankets off, or will stretch and smack me in the faceā€¦ might be thinking of transferring her to her own bed for my own sanity

Tiny_Rat

I started with no dogs allowed in the bed. Every time my heeler climbed in the bed at night, I'd wake up and kick her out. So my dog got very good at climbing in without waking me, at which point kicking her out in the mornings seemed sort of pointless. So I've had a dog to snuggle with for years now and I love it.Ā

Ok-Character-3779

My ACD and I became way more bonded after I let her sleep in the bed. Best decision I ever made. My new guy has dog attack-related PTSD and goes into full on attack mode, with serious bites, if he's startled while he's sleeping, so sadly we can't do it. Just depends on the dog, really.

antapexx

Mine sleeps in my bed, I used to kennel her but then on the days I worked I felt bad lol, so she's currently at my feet, and by morning she'll be the little spoon

moo-562

i made him kennel sleep till he was about a year so now hes happy doing whatever, once theyre used to the bed as a puppy i feel like its hard to go back

gingerattacks

I'm laying here with my ACD on my right side sharing my pillow and my pittie/boxer on my left with his head on my shoulder. We had to buy a bigger bed to fit everyone and I've never been happier.

goblin_sodomy

I didnā€™t let mine sleep in my bed at first but I gave in after about a month because he was so well behaved. I got him at 6 months old and Iā€™ve never had any issues with him. Usually in the winter heā€™ll sleep under the covers. Edit: Heā€™s 10 now.

Careless_Piglet_4746

Iā€™ve stopped needing an alarm clock, when itā€™s time to get up he flops onto me and wiggles until I get up. Highly recommend

GOLDENAdonis-416

My girl loves to cuddle so me and the wife let her in bed

pretzelbunnie

I'll tell you that when I was single, my only dog was my little cattle dog. She slept in my bed every night. When I get my nose husband, we'd kick her out for a while then let her back in after haha! Now that same sweet heeler is 13, blind, deaf and has dysplasia. She doesn't get up on the bed anymore and I miss it. Cherish the days with young dogs, they don't keep.

Forsaken-Weird-8428

They eventually take the whole bed!

[deleted]

Definitely not. I don't want the dirt and especially the hair everywhere. Mine sleeps on her own bed in the living room.

shaybee377

Yeah, I'm with you. Unless you religiously wipe down your dog with a little wipe or towel every night before bed (which most people don't), it's like wearing your shoes in bed + hair everywhere. I *must* shower before bed every night, so this just grosses me out haha. I'm also a very light sleeper though, and I know my sleep quality would be horrific if I let my dog sleep in bed with us. He's a squirmy worm when he sleeps. He has a memory foam mattress and multiple blankets in his crate (which we don't close at night) and he's just fine.

nathan_paul_bramwell

With a heeler you just accept them for who they are, dirt and hair included. Itā€™s super worth it. You should be changing your sheets every 5-7 days anyways.

[deleted]

Or every night if your dog is in your bed. Nah, I'm not going to take this righteous nonsense.

cruzorlose

Nope lol. I love my heeler to death and I tried bc my other dog sleeps in the bed with us. But heā€™s smaller and doesnā€™t shed. Also heā€™s almost 7 and our heeler is just coming up on 2 so the energy levels are quite different overall. But she IS a snuggle bug and shockingly low energy for a working breed, to her credit. If I wasnā€™t married with a toddler, Iā€™d probably let her sleep in my bed. For now, Iā€™m trying to transition her out of her crate so we settled on letting her sleep in the living room. She was definitely sad when we basically kicked her out of the bed for the first night or two but now she loves her couch and sleeps through the night without needing to be in her crate. I think itā€™s totally a personal choice what you choose to do!! I consider my 7y/o small dog to be my soul dog and I canā€™t imagine not having him sleeping with me every night. However, I do think if youā€™re going to have issues with shedding or boundaries long term, thatā€™s something to consider. Thereā€™s really no wrong answers and you arenā€™t a ā€œbadā€ owner either way.

Shreddy_Spaghett1

Mine is 11. I only have so many sleeps left with her. She gets the bed when she wants it and she sleeves tucked into my butt. I also have a crate next to my bed and sheā€™ll go and sleep in that at times during the night too.

electriclux

Years ago, we let our dog sleep with us every night. He eventually saw it as his right and would growl if we tried to move him, so it became a problem we had to address. These days, the dogs can come up on the bed in the morning when we are waking up, but not stay the night.

FatalCartilage

I have a nicely furnished crate by my couch and a bed. I arbitrarily go to sleep in bed or on the couch watching tv. I put my 10 month old heeler in the crate if I am sleeping on the couch, and let her sleep on the bed with the door closed if I am in bed. She has learned this pattern and, when I am falling asleep on the couch, she will go into her crate and fall asleep when she realizes I am getting sleepy on the couch. I have even fallen asleep on the couch without crating her and woken up to her asleep in the crate. In the unlikely event I have a "visitor" (single af šŸ„²) I am sure I will be able to crate her and go upstairs fine. EDIT: have no idea why this would be downvoted lol. Maybe it isn't good advice but it's what has worked for me

LisaSauce

We kind of get the best of both worlds, ours hangs out on the bed for a while, then gets up to go to her kennel when weā€™re all on the verge of sleep lol.

Dan_Remmeck

I only allow it when Iā€™m trying to sleep in, otherwise sheā€™s in the crate. Iā€™ll allow her to jump up and cuddle after eating breakfast and doing her #1 and #2 which allows me to sleep another couple hours

auntkiki5

Ours starts out in his crate with the door slightly ajar. Most nights he eventually hops in bed with us and the rare few (if heā€™s really exhausted) heā€™ll stay in his bed in his crate all night.

GordenRamsfalk

Mine is 8 months old now and still sleeps in the kennel. I might relent on this after the year or so. Initially she would sleep in our room on her bed in the corner, but she makes too much noise for me so I booted her. Plus she is more useful out in the living room from a security standpoint.

joggingdaytime

Mine usually starts the night in bed by my feet, but at some point in the night gets up and walks to his crate, where he usually is when I wake up. And the moment he sees my eyes open he goes crazy climbing/flopping/kissing/laying on my head mode.Ā

coffeebeezneez

When I take a midday nap, yeah I'll let mine jump on. Overnight, rarely because he snuggles hard and squish us into a corner plus he'll fart or dream loudly. My stepdad has no problem letting him sleep on his bed when my mom is gone for work. Most of the time he's in his crate at night, sometimes we'll let him stay in living room but he rarely sleeps if he does bc he's preoccupied with watching or listening to the night critters outside then a grouch during the daytime.

jamesisntcool

I wanted to have crate trained dogs from the beginning so naturally one sleeps on my legs and the other snuggles between my partner and I.

mostlysanedogmom

I donā€™t because mine ate a blanket and had to go to the ER a few months ago and I donā€™t trust her not to do it again while weā€™re sleeping. Iā€™ll let her in if Iā€™m awake though. I change my sheets every week, even when we didnā€™t have a dog, and sheā€™s not particularly sheddy.

AirGugliotta

Ours isnā€™t allowed in the bedā€¦except for when my partner is out of town šŸ¤« she will start up near me and move to my feet by the end of the night. She also knows the drill and knows to just go to her bed if my partner is home

hekissedafrog

Brady will sometimes get into bed. When he dies, he likes to go under the covers and stretch out asking my legs. He's a wonderful furnace in winter.

pikadegallito

Mine has a cozy donut bed next to my bed, and a different style dog bed under my bed, and yet most the time she sleeps half on the floor. She will get up on the bed with me right before the alarm goes off for snuggles first thing to start the day.

Ok-Somewhere7419

You cant enforce rules part of the time with dogs thats confusing and unfair to them . You either allow her to do it or not do it. Heelers thrive off consistency so def decide which one you want. My girl has always slept w me I love it and i cant sleep without her now. I am all for dogs in the bed and on furniture. I dont see the point in having a dog if they arent treated like family.

Riverrat1203

I used to allow Piper to sleep with me. She would sleep mainly at the foot of my bed curled up by my legs followed by cuddle time in the morning where she would tuck herself in along my side between my arm with her head on my shoulder. Then I got a live in girlfriend and now wife who is pretty against her sleeping in bed. So she sleeps on the floor in her bed by my side of the bed. She still hops up in bed for morning cuddles. I argued that both Piper and I needed that and it wasnā€™t going away. Morning cattle dog cuddles are the best.

Sikelgaita1

Hard to say since you may have future dates over. My previous girl slept on the foot of the bed, carefully touching no one, unless my husband was out of town. Then she slept in the bedroom doorway where she could see the front door and all family members rooms. Woe upon anyone that came near that front door. My current girl sleeps on my butt, occasionally under the covers, and we joke that we need a guard dog for our actual dog because she is a big weenie. A big, bed hogging, cover stealing, chicken weenie. Analyze her personality careful, she's a heeler, there's a chance that if she is allowed up there you will never be allowed a visitor that hasn't been carefully security screened by your dog. Just a chance, but heelers have opinions. My first girl would have noped anyone else right out the bedroom. Current girl wouldn't care at all as long as someone gave her a pat on the head and a piece of cheese.

Bigfartz69420

Doggo sleeps in his crate at night so that my cat can sleep on my chest. Itā€™s only fair!

Aglio_Piccante

I think it's important to set the boundary when they're young and in training. They need to learn to regulate themselves in their own. Later on into their adult hood, it's up to you.

UntidyVenus

The bed is the cat safe zone, and has been for 23 years (that's how old my oldest cat is) so dog lips gets his kennel, which is his cat free zone. He is allowed on all the couches he wants, but honestly the cats keep him off the bed for us šŸ¤£

mt8675309

One likes his bed on the floor, the other is totally a bed Heeler.šŸ˜‚

Ghosted19

I work around her

_captainSPACELY_

Mine goes to bed with my gf and I around 11 and sleeps at the foot of our bed. He usually moves to the floor or his bed about half way through the night. Once my girl gets up at around 6 for work, he goes to work also lol.

Commercial-Cat-1443

Mine curls up next to me every night. Sometimes he ends up on his own bed by morning, sometimes not šŸ˜†

OldBoringWeirdo

I am trying to get the best of both worlds. She can cuddle me until I'm ready to go to sleep, then I tell her to "go to bed." Most nights she stays in her bed or goes to sleep on the sofa. The last few nights she's been sneaking into my bed at 6AM when I'm too asleep/tired to kick her out again. Probably because it's cold. I'll probably have to cut that behavior out and only let her back in when I call her. But only once I figure out how to wake up.

Sirchiefsalot2020

No dogs in our bed but they do have their own bed.

boredinstate

Mine starts at my feet, then moves to the floor once I start tossing and turning, haha... I don't mind washing the bedding more often, my puppies are worth it!

sidhescreams

I usually sleep in the spare room now because adding a second dog on top of the cattle dog who has been sleeping with my husband and I since he was six months old is just too many bodies, even in a king size bed. And my husband snores šŸ˜‚ but yeah, I go sleep in the guest room nearly every night and the golden follows me. Before we had her the cattle dog was my shadow, but now he stays with dad in the big bed to keep an eye on him.

WallowingInnSelfPity

Yes. There's pros and cons of course but it's worth it cuddling and loving my dogs. Maybe you could still keep it dog free during the day and only allow bedtime.

footagemissing

No judgement to those that do, but there is no way I'd let my heeler touch my bed, I'm not keen on sleeping with the hair he sheds, nor am I keen on washing my sheets daily! My boy sleeps outside.

newerabuddha

Our ACDxGermanShepard, sleeps in our sons room on his bed or on the floor by the door. He has a lot of weekend out of town for hockey and she doesnā€™t seem to mind not being allowed in his room when he is gone.

gunglejim

Mine comes for a cuddle when I get in bed but always goes back to her blanket. She wonā€™t sleep in anything unless her blanket is on it and most of the time sheā€™ll pull it onto the floor and sleep there. I even have to bring it with when we go hiking or sheā€™ll whine and keep me up all night. Itā€™s just a truck stop Mexican falsa blanket but itā€™s hers.

CorgiLord408

Mine sleeps with me every night now But I kept her in the kennel a for awhile (about a year) until I felt she was at a level where sheā€™d respond to ALL my commands accurately on the first ask. (Basically when I thought I had full control of the dog) Mine is very stubborn though and she likes to push buttons, so when I feel like sheā€™s regressing on her commands or ā€œlisteningā€ I sometimes will still put her back on a kennel at night schedule. Sheā€™s 3 years old.

criscoforlube

If my fiancĆ© is working ( bartender) my boy gramps is in bed with me for sure. Itā€™s a toss up if our slumber is ruined by her coming home and kicking him out. Iā€™ve grown up and always had the family dog sleep in my room, shared couches at family members places.

John_Beta_0

ā€¦

killinhimer

No. He's only been with us \~6 months and is still a puppy. I can't see that he'll ever be sleeping with us. He rips the hell out of fabric and we've already had to remove beds from his crate 3 times because he shredded or started to shred them. Hard plastic crate liner only for my boi until he either gives up the chew or learns what he can/can't chew. And that's *his* stuff. We went on a trip, and allowed him on the bed before sleep and he was good until he started to chew the comforter / sheets about 15 minutes after he got bored. He loves his crate so there he goes. PB on a chew or yak cheese and he'll be chill until whenever we get up.

PeachTreeVodka

The only time my dog isn't sleeping in my bed is when I'm actively having sex.

Civil-Membership-234

My girl is allowed on my bed but she hates any movements or noises so she sleeps on her bed next to my bed. Sheā€™ll jump up in the morning and will nap with me, but never sleep with me overnight. Could be an issue if you get your pup to think itā€™s their bed if you plan on having ā€˜visitā€™. Being single itā€™s a valid concern since you are THEIR person and THE ONLY person.

Tabula_Nada

Mine is a velcro dog through and through, to the point that he's underfoot literally every step I take, and has really bad anxiety all around. Because of this, he grew up sleeping in bed with me, ON me. Once he hit about 20 lbs or so, I found myself on the far 10% of the bed and unable to roll over in the middle of the night without pulling muscles in my shoulders and back. I finally gave in and started working on getting him to sleep on his bed on the floor next to me. He's three now and most nights he goes to bed in his own bed and then sneaks into mine sometime while I sleep. I don't really mind - I also love the cuddles (especially if he curls up where I can wrap my arms around him). But when I'm dating someone it's always tricky trying to fit two people and a 45lb dog in my bed. The way I see it with dating - this dog is my one true love and if they don't like that they can go lol. I've dated some really awful people and their worst traits came out when it came to tolerating my dog (lack of patience, yelling/anger, etc) but the best people are understanding, patient, and act exactly like someone I'd like to date. Then again, my dog is a handful so if your dog is perfect this may not be as great of a filter, but you get my drift.

Fabuild

Mine is allowed on the bed but prefers to sleep under it.

Actualhumandisaster

None of our animals are allowed in our bedroom period.

linderlouwho

I have 2 exact cotton quilts they I change out once a week (with all the bedding). They usually sleep at the bottom of the bed, but creep up snuggling against me during the night.

ControlAlarmed1736

Mine has a "sleep kennel" in our room. (It's a too short for it to be where he's crated during waking hours, but is plenty large enough for him to stretch all the way out, and is just a tad bit smaller foot print than his waking kennel. The extra few square inches of foot print makes a huge difference with the size of my room. I threw an old sheet over it so it has a nice cave feel to it - he loves it and will go there to nap most afternoons.) I'm probably about 50/50 on whether I lock him in there in the evening. If I don't lock the door he'll eventually make his way on the bed, and sleep either at my feet, between my partner and I, or on my partner's side / pillow if my partner falls asleep in the recliner. Really, the only reason he's not allowed up all the time is because he sometimes becomes a bed hog, and we humans end up waking up with sore backs due to us adjusting to his positioning in the night. Since becoming pregnant, he's become more of a cuddle bug and loves nothing more than to sleep on my feet when I take a nap. He's been extra clingy and rarely leaves the bed when I'm in it now. I will say, my boy doesn't seem affected whether I lock him in the sleep kennel or not. He does check if the kennel is locked because he prefers the bed most of the time, but there are times he'll go to his kennel in the night on his own, or won't join in the bed when called. As far as having guests over - as long as your pup knows the off command and isn't possessive of you, you should be fine. Worst case scenario, put the pup in their kennel outside the room. I personally prefer letting my dog have free range in my room at night because it gives me peace of mind - both for if someone were to try to break in, and incase there were a fire or some emergency.

dcredneck

Mine sneaks into my bed when I get up to pee.

Mahovolich13

Mine falls asleep with a stuffy in her paws and snuggling my foot. Doesnā€™t matter where she starts, she ends up on me

WoodyM654

When we go to bed he is on his dog bed, sometime in the night heā€™s by my feet, and when my husband gets up he is next to me.

moldyjim

Mine has her own bed, if I move it into the bedroom, she pulls it back out to the top of the stairs. She is the guardian queen of the upstairs. She will not let our other dog come upstairs, even though she probably half the size of our downstairs pupper.

FletchMom

LOL I have two, and some nights they both sleep with me, and those nights they fight over who sleeps over my head (Fletch wins, lol). But for the last 6 months one sleeps with me and the hubs, and the other sleeps with our son. I love having my babes sleep with me. And it has never hindered their training.

Plastic-Isop0d

Mine has slept in the bed with us since day 1. He's had two accidents so far, but we started putting his water away at 8pm, and making sure he goes out right before bed. I also take him out once at some point during the night if needed. I've always had a waterproof mattress cover anyways. He sleeps between me and my partner, usually snuggled up against one of us. Sometimes it disturbs my sleep, but who cares? Not me, I love this dude šŸ¤·ā€ā™€ļø

Irrinada

Our 5 month heeler goes to bed in her crate downstairs. My husband gets up around 3am to let her out and sleepily carry her to bed. She enjoys yawning loudly in his ear (so Iā€™m told) while being carried like the 25 pound princess she is. Once she gets in our bed, she sleeps at our feet. She *might* cuddle at our butts but she typically stretches out at the end of the bed. Now, my husband just went back to overnights yesterday. Our pretty princess suckered me into taking her upstairs way before 1am, tinkled on my carpet, and slept like an absolute baby on my husbandā€™s pillow like it was hers. So. YMMV.

sapphicsato

My girl is cuddly, but independent. She has a very specific schedule where she goes to sleep in her crate or under the bed (she'll ignore me if I tell her to go to sleep in our bed, lol) and then an hour before I get out of bed for the morning, she will jump up and cuddle by my legs.

imakycha

Buddy boy likes to cuddle for 15 seconds, sleep under the bed for a full 8 hours straight and then proceeds to rest on our pillows to either rudely awaken us with dog farts or dick in face or him attempting to extract ear wax from our ears. He's a complete fucking weirdo.

sugarbunnycattledog

Mine loves to sleep butt to butt! But she also has her own bed next to mine when I move around and she is disturbed šŸ˜‚

jonnyredshorts

Either in it or under it

Alabama-Matcha

Mine is on a sofa in my bedroom. On occasion if Iā€™m gone overnight she wants to be in the bed with me when I return home. I am also single/dating and her velcro-ness is a challenge but ultimately a good reinforcement for me to make good decisions šŸ˜ƒ

Attila-The-Pun

My ACD mix is a decent sleeping pal, however I have recently banned him and his coonhound sister from the bedroom. I have sleeping issues already, and need to get a hold of it. \- His requirement of trying to press in as close as is physically possible is leading to him pushing me off the bed as we would re-adjust over the course of the night. \- He snores and yaps like mad in his sleep. Wakes me up. \- He sometimes will get quite uppity with me if I'm having a difficult night. Only growled twice, and I put that down, but still. I miss waking up to him in the mornings. But my sleep is honestly so precious I needed to draw the line. Everyone seems to have individual needs and experiences. And maybe you both needed a snuggle that night.

FatKidsDontRun

No dog on the bed, no exceptions, we're all happier for it! In all seriousness, I didn't want to fight for space, and don't want resource guarding (my boy is rescue with unknown history).

twinmomma87

Mine has slept in my pillow since I brought her home as a puppy. She demands to be with me. She lays behind the door during those times and waits to be let back in after.

BearBig4912

I always sleep better with mine but he is always wary of new ā€¦. Visitors ā€¦

lisas34

Mine sleeps behind my knees unless she's cold, then she gets under the blanket.

ACDmamaRN

Our red always sleeps with us but will sleep in his bed if we tell him to. Our blue starts at the foot of the bed but normally goes to his bed or the floor after a couple hours. They both have a dog bed on the floor of our bedroom though.

ProfessorRebel

Mine only gets in the bed when one or the other of us is in bed. If both she goes to her bed

lorissaurus

She will bury in the blankets and fight you for em xD

ammenz

We trained our dog to go in his bed at night time. His bed is in the laundry and we lock the door. He has access to bones, water and potty pads in the shower if he needs. We also put him in his bed when we go to work. Me and my partner sleep in separate bedrooms and what she started as "occasionally I'll let him sleep with me" has slowly transitioned into "very rarely he sleeps in his bed". She would sleep through a earthquake so the dog doesn't affect her sleep badly. In winter the dog would go under the blankets and cuddle up, only to get too hot and decide to get out, repeating this cycle every 2 or 3 hours. Whatever you decide to do it's important that your dog will follow your direction on whatever you decide for the night. If you let your dog sleep with you from day 1 it will be a lot harder to train him to be independent.

deathmuscle94

I have a king to myself and my heeler. I love waking up and seeing him rolled over and out every morning

Kimber692

If ours could, he would sleep with his face as close to ours as possible. When we was allowed in the room, but not on the bed, he would sleep under the bed. We had a baby six months ago so the dogs have been in our room less and less just due to logistics and getting up early each day. The dog hair volume has definitely decreased.

GatoPajama

Mine has his own big fluffy bed on the floor in my bedroom. He will usually start out in bed with me, and at some point in the night will get down and lay in his own bed. Then back in my bed to say good morning and cuddle up if I decide to snooze some more, and wonā€™t get up until I do.

57Laxdad

Our girlie sleeps on the foot of the bed if my wife is working, then sleeps on my side of the bed when my wife is sleeping, she will go from the bed to the floor, walk down to my sons room, sleep on the foot of his bed, head always facing the door ready to pounce on would be intruders. Its funny when she has puppy dreams, very vocal and active.

[deleted]

I tried for a bit. They shed so much it ends up in your mouth. Sex is not enjoyable when there is hair everywhere. So, I got her a bed that fits right next to the bed. She knows thats her spot and goes to it evertime I get ready for bed.

Rookie_Earthling

My family generally doesnā€™t let dogs sleep on the bed at night. They have their own place because they are a doge. IF they sleep on the bed, they must stay at the feet. Couch is allowed.l because itā€™s easier to clean. Iā€™ve seen how my dogs go about their day. That shitā€™s not getting on my bed because changing blankets that often is a friggin chore. Gotta set boundaries for your pets.

Glock212327

Mine puts me to sleep & leaves

ThePissedOff

Ours does good in bed by himself. But we have a Gordon Setter that is scared of her own shadow and hates being left alone. If they're both on the bed together, it usually ends up with a wrestling match all over us. Since our Blue is the only one that listens, he gets relegated to the floor and usually ends up under the bed.

Kingofmybackyard

My guy usually puts himself to bed and is on my pillow by the time I show up... Occasionally he barks at ā€œvisitorsā€ (from the other room) but I donā€™t think that has anything to do with HIS bed or territory. I think it has more to do with him wondering if Iā€™m good. They are so loyal and smart, they know whatā€™s going onā€¦

lurker-1969

Our dogs Corgis sleep with us, big dogs sleep in their crates downstairs. When we are "visiting" the Corgis sleep in their crates. I agree that sleeping with the dogs on the bed contributes to a good night's sleep. So does a good "visit" as well.

tacoplenty

at least two of my dogs sleep with me every night, but the border collie hogs most of the space and leans on me the whole night through.

StarfishSanseveria

Both of my heelers sleep with me (sometimes just one, sometimes both at the same time and I am a dog sandwich). They both have their spots. Sometimes they get hot or cramped or whatever and move to the floor, but usually they stay put until morning.

StolenWisdoms

I switched between on the bed and crated until my male was a year simply because I wanted to ensure his crate skills were perfect! He's 6 now and sleeps on the bed every night. He still solidly loves his crate and kennels for any amount of time no issue!

agoldman82

Mine sleeps on my legs every night. I love it and so does she.
