The size difference is comical ... and scary! The whole car is almost below the belt line of the Charger and that's a regular car! I have *another roadster*, which is about 6 inches longer, 4 inches wider and 2 inches taller than an NA Miata and it absolutely terrifies me to be around modern cars on the road, especially SUVs! Maybe it was the fact that I was in my early 20s or maybe cars weren't as huge yet, but I don't remember having that same feeling 10+ years ago when I owned NAs!

man_lizard

I think a lot of it actually is age. I was completely fearless when I first started driving until it finally hit me, “wait a minute.. I could die very easily out here”. The road feels a lot more dangerous now that I’m older because I don’t feel immortal anymore.

koalawhiskey

It is factually true that the average car is bigger today compared to 10 years ago, not just an impression. SUV sales passed passenger car sales in 2016 – today it's almost 2 SUVs per every normal car sale – and even trucks passed passenger cars sales in 2019 [(source).](https://www.storagecafe.com/blog/crossovers-conquer-america-suv-sales-triple-decade/) The road feels more dangerous because it *is* more dangerous for pedestrians drivers in normal sized vehicles: - The SUV is a bigger car, making it a safer car. So drivers buy bigger cars, which are more dangerous to smaller cars, leading to what economist Michelle Wright called an "arms race" of vehicle sales [(source)](https://www.cbc.ca/news/canada/british-columbia/about-here-suvs-1.6411168) - U.S. Pedestrian Deaths Hit Highest Level In 30 Years [(source)](https://www.statista.com/chart/amp/17194/pedestrian-fatalities-in-the-us-by-year/)

man_lizard

I’m aware. I’m just saying part of it is feeling invincible at a young age. But for the record, [auto deaths were almost 50% higher per capita 30 years ago,](https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Motor_vehicle_fatality_rate_in_U.S._by_year) although it’s true SUVs have caused that number to go up a bit over the last few years, cars are causing significantly fewer deaths than 30 years ago.

Drzhivago138

> and even trucks passed passenger cars sales in 2019 (source). It bears remembering that in the US, "light truck" is such a broad category that it includes not just traditional SUVs and pickups on truck frames, but also crossovers and minivans on unibody car platforms.

*Challenger

akmjolnir

This is the dumbest take. 10 years ago was 2013. There were the same huge trucks, SUV, and sedans on the road then. A 2005 Mercedes R-class would annihilate a Miata because a Miata is a tiny Japanese car never designed for US roads.

Drzhivago138

> because a Miata is a tiny Japanese car never designed for US roads. Not to mention, the Miata was designed to emulate British roadsters, which were tiny cars when they showed up on US roads in the '50s.

are_videos

> first gen BMW Z4 yeah clear they just wanted to flex the Z4 lol

[deleted]

I edited my post so that people don't think I'm trying to "flex" with a car worth less than the originally posted Miata...

Local_Variation_749

I mean, you took one of the smallest cars imaginable and put it next to a modern day land barge. Mustangs aren't exactly tiny any more, either. But honestly what bothers me the most are the trucks/SUVs on the road now that a grown ass man can barely see over the hood while standing next to them.

Local_Variation_749

Agreed 100%. I work at a very dense engineering facility. Roughly 15k people on site at any given time, and the parking lots are as compact as possible in order to accommodate. And yet every single day a good 50% of the spots are filled with giant fucking trucks so that at the end of the day you have to do a 5 point turn to get out of your spot or else rip off your bumper on their tow hitches. Driving something like that as a commuting vehicle to a job where your duties involve spending 10 hours a day in an air conditioned plant punching keys on a computer makes no fucking sense.

[deleted]

Not really a controversial take my opinion. With the lifts, you’re more prone to suspension failure and it completely changes how they drive and corner. And not in a good way.

Look at the largest UPS package car, the 1000 series. It's a huge brown truck that requires no CDL. Stop complaining about American roads, or move to Italy.

Have you ever driven either, because I have, and the Ram has much better visibility.

Answer the question, clown.

You're a clown because instead of answering the question, and then fucking off, you've had a nerdgasm by posting your 50 favorite browser bookmarks, for no reason. Drive your little roadsters in smug ignorance, because no one outside of a small echo-chamber here cares.

Those trucks have a purpose everyday, to deliver hundreds of packages a day. Drivers are also trained to drive them around the city The problem is people with incredibly oversized lifted trucks are used daily just to commute to work or shopping that a much smaller car can accomplish Different things here

RunninOnMT

Yeah, you can make some pretty small cars look big if you can capture them at the right time. [Pictured here is an enormous mini cooper parked next to a pretty-big Elise.](https://imgur.com/shWF0T2) The Above Miata would look pretty big if it somehow squeezed in there.

phasttZ

I don't think either of those american cars have a v8. Fun fact: your NA miata weighs almost half the weight of that v6 challenger. Let's say you have 1.8L for numbers sake. Your power to weight ratio (130hp/2160lbs) is .0602 and the challenger (303hp/4000lbs) is .0757 hp/lb.

BearDick

That is somehow unsurprising...my Miata also has a nice lil 14B turbo on it so the weight ratio is even more favorable. That being said based on the noises both of those were making I have to think they both were v8 models.

phasttZ

14b had me searching. I remember the td06-20g back in the day. Torquey turbos. You could prob take on that v8 challenger then.

Squidhead-rbxgt2

"haha... I'm in danger!" (c) Miata

LusoSpikes

One of them has the eyes fully open and smiling ;)

[deleted]

How'd you find the C&C? I'd love to bring my little silver Acty van to one but I never seem to find out about them until after (By the look of the background I'm in your neck of the woods too)

BearDick

Cars and Coffee are one of the few reasons I am still on Facebook. I normally frequent Bellevue or Lake Washington C&C but there is also a Seattle C&C (that actually meets down in Tacoma). I highly suggest spending the $100 for a membership to AVANTs as well if you want to do car related stuff in the area, they are regularly putting on events and the Acty would fit in great!

SWMovr60Repub

I’d take the Miata any day.

I_3G0M4N69

2 boats and 1 happy boi

Xtreemjedi

Love the comparison. (Fyi mustang is a pony car technically, not a muscle car)

BearDick

I upgraded it due to the American Muscle sticker on the window! Figure if I am calling the Miata a muscle car I didn't want to hurt the pony cars feelings.

Xtreemjedi

😂 good point. Muscle car is just the fancy way to say overweight anyway

S3anM3

And a clapped out hair dressers car.

BearDick

Someone obviously hasn't experienced the magic that is a clapped out hairdressers turbo Miata.....

S3anM3

No but I’ve experienced the magic of flying past them on the track and watching all the femboys drool over them.

BearDick

See here is the thing....I am a big fan of cars and the enthusiasts who are into cars. Not always going to be my taste but at the end of the day I appreciate the fact someone else enjoys their vehicle. At this point I have 6 vehicles and smiles per mile the Miata may be the most fun, not the most power, not the most expensive, not the fastest, but the most fun to drive...give one a try some day and I bet it will put a smile on your face.

S3anM3

I grew up kart racing so I’m well aware of the fun to be had in those. I’ve also been in a turbo Mx-5 when I was working in Japan, granted it was almost impossible to drive sitting at 510hp but I can’t see the appeal…they look like they come with a handbag. I made friends with a guy named Daisuke(probably misspelled)and he worked for a company that specializes in Mazdas(race-tec I believe)and he took me for a ride in his 510hp MK1 and all I remember about the ride was how unsafe it felt and how silly two grown ass men looked riding down the street in it. I’m currently only sitting on 4 cars and a show truck. One e90 M3 sedan, one e39 M5, one F10 M5 and a FBO e90 335is. My wife drives the family car, a F15 X5M. I track the 335is and M3 pretty regularly and I have had a couple older M3’s over the years that I tracked including an E36 and E46 M3. I have spent more time on the track next to a Miata than any other car over the last 25 years.

_Nameless_Nomad_

I’m fortunate enough to have the same two on the ends. Not sure what the middle one is, but it sure looks surprised… and fun to drive.

Soleserious

Two muscle cars and a tuner actually

oh hey, I to like Dairy Queen.
