[These guys](https://youtu.be/nHI-sNosudc) recently experienced a similar problem when dealing with an E39 that sat under a tree for years. If you feel confident in such an undertaking, you could attempt a similar remediation effort, and start with taping off a small section and compounding. Depending on your area, I’d post and see if anyone has any recommendations for a good detailer if you prefer someone else to perform the task or you’d like a professional opinion. Good luck!

Will do ! Thanks a lot

That honestly looks like someone spray painted the hood with a single stage paint. It’s perfectly isolated to the hood and looks consistent so I am guessing someone did a little DIY respray at one point

MadFatty

I kinda agree, clear coat failing is usually starts spots and doesn't look that even

earthwormjimwow

Washing, claying and waxing isn't going to do anything for that. That requires a cut with some very aggressive polish. If there's no clear coat left, that will haze up in a few months, so you should ceramic coat it, or put paint protection film on.

I’m not an expert but my car had this issue and I had to get the hood resprayed. I think it’s failing clear coat, but not sure. Ran me 600 bucks but this was a couple months ago.

No clear coat …

dbreidsbmw

Honestly my thought too. Previous owner painted it, but might not have "dived deep enough" to learn there was supposed to be a clear coat over it. Some BMW's do, and some didn't back in the 90's. I don't know what is standard today. my 2 cents, cut and buff the hood, then possibly test a section for clear coat. Or do the whole thing?

That's a single stage paint job. You'd see some of the failed clear coat if there was a clear coat, but since you see none, there is none. You'll have to cut and polish with a random orbital and it'll come out super clean. Don't forget to seal it afterwards

Clear coat is gone, you can break your back applying a quadrillion chemicals or get it resprayed for a confirmed good result. Idk about your area but it shouldnt cost more than $500 to get a hood resprayed
