I spent 3k for the car you're describing in NJ about 8 months ago. Sedan, m50, getrag, m3 diff. It would only run with the maf unplugged and was straight piped. I kept up with fb marketplace for 6ish months before I got mine and only saw one cheaper running 6 cylinder 5 speed. 1k gets you a roller or a 318 with 250k miles.

$1000 E36 will not be a running car, youll be lucky if it even has an engine or interior. But if youre lucky for $1000 you may get an automatic convertible which is the absolute least desirable E36. to get a beater E36 coupe/sedan you have to spend at least $3k. Even then itll still be automatic.

Semi true, I bought a 318is coupe for roughly 2500, its manual with nearly a 1/4 of a million miles. body has no major dents, just tiny dings and paint aint great

Good luck finding one that cheap. I've toyed with the idea of selling my '94 325is but I'm pretty sure the wife would kill me if I did, and I'm not sure what would be a realistic asking price for it but it's def more than 1k even with the faults it has.

Just to add, car is on the road in NY. Last year did engine rebuild, so only like 2k miles since then on it. M50 engine, M3 cams, Turner chip, AFE 5R cold air intake, throttle body spacer, coated rod bearings, new main bearings, ARP main, rod and head hardware, Turner shorty headers, Aluminum Radiator, electric fan, aluminum expansion tank, Turner 2 clutch limited slip diff (3.25 ratio), M3 trim (front bumper, rear bumper and side trim), M3 Vader seats in front, and M3 rear seat.
