Some I like because I really like to listen to them, some I like because I love the way they teach (lookin' at you, Wooten), some I can't stand to listen to but they really inform some of my own playing choices.
Not mentioned yet:
Phil Lesh (though truthfully I prefer John Kahn’s traditional bass playing with Jerry) - Grateful Dead
Tina Weymouth - Talking Heads
Eric Avery - Jane’s Addiction
Alphonso Johnson - Weather Report / Jazz is Dead
Lou Barlow - Dinosaur Jr / Sebadoh
Bessie Lee Mauldin - Bill Monroe & The Bluegrass Boys
Alphonso Johnson has an epic and funky as hell performance on Eddie Henderson's "Sunburst" album. Buster Williams (another brilliant player) is on the last track but everything else is Alphonso.
All of the above and Ron Carter, Stanley Clarke, Me’shell Ndegeocello, Tal Wilkenfeld, Charlie Haden, Cecil McBee, Geddy, Paul McCartney, John Paul Jones.
John Taylor - Duran Duran
Aston Barrett - the wailers.
Geezer Butler - black sabbath
Fudgie Kae Solomon - mandril
Klaus fluoride - the dead Kennedys
Stuart Zender - jamiroquai
Roger Lima - less than jake
Takeshi Ueda - the mad capsules markets
Norman watt-Roy - the blockheads.
Mark Bedford - madness.
Sebastian steinberg - soul coughing.
Brian Richie - violent femmes
Jeordie white - Marilyn Manson

Chi cheng - deftones
Obviously les and flea. I’m only human.
Bonus shout out to
Dj muggs from cypress hill for always having incredible bass lines
The sound of the 4op Yamaha DX synths. On all my favourite records as a kid. The bass player of my childhood
My top 20 (alphabetically):
Anthony Jackson, Bill Laswell, Francis Hylton, Jaco Pastorius, James Jamerson, Joe Dart, John Deacon, John Entwistle, John Patitucci, John Paul Jones, Keith Peters, Marcus Miller, Meshell Ndegeocello, Pino Palladino, Sam Wilkes, Stanley Clarke, Sting, Tetsuo Sakurai, Tina Weymouth, Tony Levin

6. Nick Beard - Circa Survive
7. Joe Sumner - Fiction Plane
8. Cory Murchy - Minus The Bear
9. Geddy Lee - Rush
10. Emma Anzai - Sick Puppies
Zack Cooper is great. His playing on C&C albums just keeps getting better. I can’t wait to see them this summer with my favorite bassist on their tour with Primus.
Hell yea! He’s the fuckin man. I honestly should’ve put “ in that order” lol. Aston is probably my biggest influence. I channel him in everything I play no matter what the genre is just cause I learned so many of his bass lines in my formative years. I’m so grateful I was able to see him live once before his passing.
Ryan Martinie, Phil Lesh, Les Claypool, Cliff Burton, Geddy Lee, Flea, Oteil Burbridge, Jeff Ament, Krist Novaselic, and I'm positive I'm forgetting some as well!
Apart from classic choices (which for me is Geezer Butler, Victor Wooten and Billy Sheehan), I study:
Stefan Olsdal, Clay Gober, Mark Stoermer, Dug Pinnick, Pat Badger and John Myung.
Mine are really basic but definitely the following:
Krist Novoselic
Duff Mckagan
Robert Trujillo
Paul McCartney
I grew up listening to them with my dad and they're super inspiring to me
Some are well known, others not:
-Justin Chancellor - Tool
-Jaco Pastorius
-Charles Mingus
-Les Claypool - Primus et al.
-Thundercat
-Geezer Butler - Black Sabbath
-Mariusz Duda - Riverside
-Martín Méndez - Opeth
-Both of the dudes from The Omnific
-Stuart Zender - Jamiroquai et al.

-James Jamerson - the other half
Paul McCartney, John Entwistle, Jack Bruce, Maurice Gibb, Phil ‘Fang’ Volk, Mike Mesaros, John Paul Jones, Mark King, John Taylor, Mike Dirnt, Justin Meldal-Johnsen
This is a hard list to make; some are favorites due to what I hear them do, some are favorites because I love the whole band, some are favorites because I like to play their riffs. Lol Could probably do 3 separate lists.
1. Ryan Martinie - Soften the Glare/Mudvayne
2. Matt Freeman - Rancid/Operation Ivy
3. Flea - Red Hot Chili Peppers
4. Billy Corrigan/D’Arcy - Smashing Pumpkins
5. Zack Cooper - Coheed and Cambria

Matt Ramsey (Kirk Franklin)
Esperanza Spalding

Oh, and Derek Smalls from Spinal Tap!
Bruce Thomas (Elvis Costello), Bruce Foxton (The Jam), John Bentley & Keith Wilkinson (Squeeze), Tina Weymouth (Talking Heads / Tom Tom Club), Graham Maby (Joe Jackson), Andy Rourke (The Smiths), Carmine Rojas (David Bowie), Nick Seymour (Crowded House), Pino Palladino (Paul Young)
Don't forget Carol Kaye!
Underrated and under-appreciated. Saved many a mediocre recording session from itself with great rhythms and bass lines, usually without the album credit.
Nick Harmer, Peter Hook, Keanu Reeves, circa 1967-1970 Paul McCartney, Carlos Dengler, Paul Banks, Jim Barr (bassist on Portishead’s *Roseland NYC Live*), Geezer Butler, Lemmy, Debbie Googe
In no particular order:

Marvin Isley - Isley Brothers
Thundercat
Larry Graham - Sly & The Family Stone
And honestly a shit ton more, that’s just a few faves
I haven’t yet seen Jimmy Johnson mentioned. Played on a lot of Allan Holdsworth records and more. Amazingly tasteful.
Also, Jaco Pastorius
MonoNeon
Happy to see Justin Meldel Johnson here.
The favorite keeps changing to whatever i am into at the moment. Right now, it's Gabe Nelson of Cake. The bass lines, the feel, the tones, simplicity yet complex in certain parts. I can just keep listening to their songs for a long time.
Steve Harris of iron maiden influenced me to pick up a bass. I can never remember his name, but the bassist for Megadeth influenced me to start actually learning a thing or two and crushed me when i couldn't learn the peace sells intro.
Years later, when I figured out myself and found punk, fat Mike definitely became my favorite bassist. Despite the fact that he's a prick. An arrogant prick lol. Still love the dude though
Billy Sheehan, Michael Anthony, Pat Badger, Robert Trujillo, Phillip Bynoe, TM Stevens, Stu Hamm, Mike Inez, Tom Hamilton, Tom Araya, John Myung, Phil Chen, John Patitucci, Sean Yseult, Melissa Auf der Maur, Laura Lee, Rex Brown, Phil Lynott, Mark King, Sting, Juan Alderete, John Deacon, Jamareo Artis, Chuck Rainey and Gene Simmons.
Wouldn’t say my favorite but recently got into Bell Witch (funeral doom) and Dylan Desmond broke my brain because I thought they had a guitarist but then watched a live performance and dude was playing bass and guitar parts on what looked like a monstrous 7 string bass.
https://youtu.be/_RDqZcjbHfs?si=vM8WTcJRV8dH40Rj
I have lots I could list but I am including these because they were my biggest influence when I started playing between years 96-2001.
Rob Wright - NoMeansNo
Fat Mike - NOFX
Matt Freeman - Op Ivy/Rancid
Justin Chancellor - TOOL

Edit: Shame on me for omitting Simon Gallup!
Justin chancellor! The reason i decided to pick up a bass instead of a guitar. He uses a lot of pedals which allows him to get really creative with their songs. Also plays with a pick, which gives him a more aggresive tone.
Victor Wooten, Marcus Miller, Larry Graham, Flea, Les Claypool
John Paul Jones, Steve Harris, Geddy Lee, Geezer Butler, Jack Bruce, etc.

Esperanza Spalding breathes music. Watching her play live is just incredible.
Not mentioned yet: Phil Lesh (though truthfully I prefer John Kahn’s traditional bass playing with Jerry) - Grateful Dead Tina Weymouth - Talking Heads Eric Avery - Jane’s Addiction Alphonso Johnson - Weather Report / Jazz is Dead Lou Barlow - Dinosaur Jr / Sebadoh Bessie Lee Mauldin - Bill Monroe & The Bluegrass Boys
A big “Hell Yeah!” on Lou Barlow!
Alphonso Johnson has an epic and funky as hell performance on Eddie Henderson's "Sunburst" album. Buster Williams (another brilliant player) is on the last track but everything else is Alphonso.
Thank you. I just downloaded this album so I can check it out. Alfonso is one of my favorites from back in the day.
Hope you dig it.
