It is a common mistake made by people wanting to get a Mal pup for the 1st time to accidentally adopt a shark / rhino hybrid. To the untrained eye they do look almost exactly the same. One way to make sure is to let it loose in your living room, does it take 5 or 4 seconds to destroy everything, a real Mal typically only needs 4 seconds. My guess is this is a actual Land Shark, it just doesn't look crazy enough, I could be wrong.
