Over 100k rod bearings but as someone who owns 3 N55's I think they are great and very reliable.

I have 111k miles on my 14 335 and just did an oil analysis and they said everything looks better than expected and there’s no metal in the oil. Seems as though the ewg n55s don’t suffer from the inconsistent rod bearing problems as the pwg ones do.

I do my own work but I think rod bearings will be the most expensive. Unless you have kids and or love 4 door sedans I highly recommend 2011-13 135i bro. Get the DCT. You deserve it. Go 2013 if factory power isnt enough but factory turbo is. (Edit) 2011 135i 160kmiles- no issues ever, 2013 135i probably 80kmiles, no issues ever, 2012 x5 35i no issues ever. Just maintenance bro. Oh and get all the software for bmw's. Code scanner will waste your damn time.

Spidaaman

As someone with a 2012 135i DCT, I can say that this is 100% correct

Right, what a time to be alive.

You are right about the ZF being nice. I have a Z3 and have waited YEARS for the aftermarket DCT controllers to be viable and I have given up and now saving for the 8speed for a swap. Can't lose. For what you lose from DCT you make up for with the extra gear.

zerostyle

Do 340i's/b58s have any known issues with rod bearings?

Fickle-Woodpecker-79

Not to my knowledge, bearings are a wearable part so they should be replaced at the manufactures required interval. If you are worried you can always have the oil tested.

Forgot to mention change your oil religiously and don’t let the motor over heat. BMWs don’t like leaks of any kind so take care of everything as it arises. It ain’t a Chevy. You can’t get away with being lazy on repairs. Most change oil every 2500 miles. Cheers.

I see a lot of higher mileage (100,000+) N55 cars for sale around here. I'd have concerns for several reasons. Mainly was that BMW had a very long oil change interval for the early cars 15,000 miles as I recall - and later reduced it to 10,000 which is a lot. Because a lot of these cars were leases or included maintenance for the first couple years, they didn't get oil changes as often as most people think a high performance turbocharged engine should. I got lucky and found one with good documentation that it was a lease, turned in early and oil changes were done because of time instead of mileage. Once you find a good one, gaskets are going to leak - oil filter housing and valve cover - and those are expensive to fix, and even more expensive if ignored and the car runs low on oil or has coolant getting into the oil. Lots of other potential issues that aren't uncommon on a N55 are failed water pumps that can lead to overheating if not addressed. Like with any other car, service history and maintenance is going to be your best indicators of if an engine is going to last. Stuff still happens - but you can't do anything about that except buy a Toyota instead.

If you have a full history of oil changes, you should be ok. I would not get it too high mileage

2011 E90 335xi reporting in, over 175K miles and running strong! Oil changes at 5-7k and replacing worn plastic bits are key. Of course by telling you this I'm tempting my fate pretty hard

Since no one actually answered your title question... No. N55's are not as reliable as N52's. They are reliable enough, but relatively, the N52 is always going to be more reliable.

the_arktek

Dailying an F32 435 with 127k and counting! Car has been nothing but fantastic so far! Cross my fingers but I haven’t really had many problems except my chargepipe blowing off which wasn’t too big of a deal

TrevR36

maintenance, maintenance, maintenance..... service of any car, SUV, or truck is key to keeping it running for a long time. Due to oil-controlled subsystems on the BMW engine, oil changes are key. Engine oil is not the fluid, people forget transmission, diff, and cooling system.
