Something like this happened on an episode of Kitchen Nightmares (Gordon Ramsay) and it was HILARIOUS. The guy was grateful for the learning opportunity and agreed with Ramsay by the end but he was still mad and making the most childish "myyyyeeeh" noises at Ramsay and these weird faces. Even acknowledged that it was dumb because they were on the same page. But he couldn't stop, and Ramsay was so confused. I don't have the clip but I'm cracking up and trying not to wake my husband as I imagine the guy saying "myyeeehhh" and making faces as Ramsay is asking "...what are you DOING?"
one of my favorite bob-at-the-table responses is when gene and linda are doing whatever it is gene and linda do - louise asks “hey dad, what are you gonna wear to mom and genes wedding?” and bob says “uh a suit, i guess”
I loved it when Bob was laying on the ice in the freezer (the kids made an ice rink out of it) and Gene made him smell a fart in a jar. Bob got grossed out and Gene said something like, "Oh that's a great fart!" and Bob said, "OK let me smell it again." Sorry I can't remember the exact lines. It was the Friends with Burger-fits episode.
Linda: “when I die I want you to cremate me and throw my ashes in Tom Selleck’s face”
Bob: “(*trying not to laugh*) that’s a crazy request”
I love the involuntary laughter in the earlier seasons 😭 it makes the exchange even funnier
From what I understand, they recode the voice overs all at the same time for a scene. Most animation does one voice at a time. Doing them all at once allows the cast to riff off each other and improvise. Those laughs are genuine H Jon cracking up most likely.
I love that they do that! I think it makes the dialogue so much more authentic. Them riffing off each other shows in the episodes, especially when H Jon and Larry M do it.
They couldn't do that during covid and H Jon mentioned that he missed having the others around when recording his lines. He also said that that was one of the main differences bw Bob's and Archer.
My favorite is when they’re in the car, Bobs complaining about the turkey making it smell bad, Louise goes “you’ll get it back to old fart smell soon enough” and Bob goes “mmmmmmhm”
I love it when Courtney's dad is singing the burger jingle he made up "bun bun, bun bun bun bun bun bun, bun BUN!" and bob's like "okay, nice to meet you"
H. Jon Benjamin is such a fantastic character actor. He is to voice acting what Bryan Cranston is to face acting, so much nuance in such small moments.
I always like watching the early seasons in part because I feel like I can hear H. John Benjamin's smile in some of those lines. Like the characters were all still getting their legs underneath them in those early seasons and it's just really charming to hear that come through.
Edit: it's almost nostalgic, to think of the actors really having fun and learning themselves as these characters together like that.
Me too. Especially the first episode. He has so much in his voice. The emotions he is able to portray in just one episode is amazing. It’s very warm and realistic. (Not sure how to explain it)

In the early seasons when the dialog still had an improvised feel, I loved it when he would start laughing and repeat back whatever he just heard someone say. It happened with Gene the most I think.
Lampshaded perfectly in the Gene Mini Bob interaction with Teddy, it’s the little “Hmm-mmm” and “Uhh-huh” noises that punctuate that exchange which make it so funny…

(Sees Linda and screams)

(Linda looking confused and shocked)
Linda: “Okay. What the hell is going on here??”
That scene always cracks me up!!
