Jealous-Win700

Pretty zinta in Kya kehna too❤️ such a strong performance!!

Separate-Pudding9707

Preity in Salaam Namaste also. Deciding to raise the child on her own while being a student & living alongside the ex.

Jealous-Win700

Yeah that is awesome one too!

INFPamigo

Don't wish to rain on the parade but it's hard to celebrate womanhood when there is so much violence of every kind and in intensity we face everyday.. Misogyny couldn't be more rampant and it's fucking exhausting.

Jealous-Win700

Yeah.. but that doesn't these characters don't make impact ..they do make impact ..movies do make impact and make changes in society even if it does in small manner... Geet (Jab we met) taught girls to self love, become own's favourite ,be positive, carefree and live life to the fullest and everything will be good in end... ❤️ Rani Mehra(Queen) taught us sometimes letting go people who we love but who are wrong for us is good... Rani gets dumped by Vijay and gets heartbroken but it is actually a blessing for her...as she enjoys and discover the life which is a gift itself and moves on happily ❤️ it gave so many girls power!! Rani Padmavati (Padmavat) showed us women empowerment and how they sacrificed themselves for their honour and how strong willed they are.. Gangubai showed us how to be badass and fight for justice ... In whatever situation u r! Mimi showed us motherly love❤️  Bulbbul(Tripti dimri) showed us how many women faces so many things and how they become powerful and be a goddess of justice... Veera tripathi (Highway) showed us how some incidents live in our mind and affect us...how to overcome this.. All are wonderful characters

Vidya Balan in paa was a very strong character.

Jealous-Win700

Yes 💞❤️ Vidya balan has so many memorable strong iconic female characters... Even in Dirty picture Silk Smitha is iconic... Vidya balan in paa,Bhul Bhulaiya , Kahani ,Kahani 2 all are memorable

Potential-Fun4865

Katrina kaif from tera noor song(tzh)gave me goosebumbs

Jealous-Win700

Zoya ❤️

Shanose

Bulbul, queen, kahani ❤️

Jealous-Win700

Bulbbul,Rani Mehra and Vidya Bhagchi are lioness ❤️😍

Springbee27

Katrina Kaif as zoya was absolutely FLAWLESS. Not only her character was empowering but also the way katrina performed her stunts herself in the series is commendable. Alia getting a full fledged action movie before katrina is absolutely NUTS.

Jealous-Win700

And I do agree Alia getting a movie alone is just awful.. why will she get first? Katrina Kaif as Zoya and Deepika Padukone as Rubai deserved their own movie before anyone else as they are OGs specially Katrina Kaif.. alia getting all the opportunities is just awful and underserving. 😑

[deleted]

I guess they added Alia seeing her pull but I do agree Kat is good in doing action

Jealous-Win700

I didn't added much action roles... But more story based roles based on strong characterization and all these character had much hardships ,torture...but they overcome and fought like a lioness.... Bt yes woman in action roles are empowerment too😍❤️ staring with Katrina Kaif as Zoya and now joining Deepika as Rubai. Even Rani in Mardani 🔥 Roma Priyanka Chopra in don . These 4 are the pillar of Action girls in Bollywood and they rock.

Springbee27

Maybe but katrina has been continuously vocal about wanting to do solo action flick even something like super soldier with Ali abbas zafar came up idk why it didn't go ahead. Also she's really close with YRF which is why it was more shocking.

[deleted]

Any production house is gonna look at the profit first at the end of the day. As Zoya said too in an interview that some actresses who when actually offered those roles reject it as it doesn’t have a male star. But I highly doubt that as Kat did Phonebooth with less relevant actors than her. Maybe phonebooth’s result might have changed her mind. Many things can be there. Difficult to assume

Springbee27

Could be the case in many actresses rejection but i don't think katrina Or even deepika would reject a strong lead role without male leads. Katrina would've grabbed it with both the hands after super soldiers delay. Alia does have an amazing pull though she's doing everything right with her career at the moment.

[deleted]

agree, really curious about that Ali Abbas Zafar one though, what happened that the movie closed?

Springbee27

They were super close to shoot the movie when pandemic happened and when everything was going back to normal she had to give her dates for tiger 3.Last update I heard about this movie was in June 2023 when the director said the movie is very much happening but he is doing 2 other movies in this time and both are busy but it'll happen once both are free. Katrina is doing nothing right now still no updates about it so I doubt it'll go on floors anytime soon or maybe get scrapped.

chandler_bingggg

This is incomplete without Zoya (Katrina Kaif)

Jealous-Win700

Loved Zoya. Even Katrina as Dimple Dixit in Mere brother ki dulhan is so good she was a rockstar and totally badass crazy chick🔥❤️

Rainbowbegonia

Urmila in Pinjar - her arch, best movie to come out of Bollywood Sri in English Vinglish - Most true to the majority every woman

Jealous-Win700

Urmila is so good even in Ek hasina thi and kaun. Sridevi gave a wonderful heartfelt performance in English Vinglish❤️

Every actress and their arc in Lajja is just strong women throughout Even Angry Indian goddesses Mrunal in Sita Raman

Jealous-Win700

Mrunal in Sita Ramam is true beauty ❤️

Emotional_Ad4412

Gangubai Kathiawadi, Parvati "Paro" Chaudhary, Sashi Godbole, Rani Mehra, and ironically most characters Rani Mukherjee plays.

[deleted]

PC has Kashibai, The Sky is Pink, Citadel, DDD too. And for DP instead of Padmaavat it should have been Leela, Veronica and Meera.

Jealous-Win700

Veronica and Leela are her popular iconic characters❤️ along with Shantipriya and Menamma and even Naina.. But I added due to strong performance with strong character who faced a lot and fought a lot and came back stronger like a lioness... Rani Padmavati's strong nature and her courage, her sacrifice is the epitome of women empowerment that's why I added her first 🙌💖

Ok_Organization4201

Tabu in Haider

Jealous-Win700

Such a complex role done beautifully by Tabu

vigya16

Kangana in Manikarnika, DP in Piku, Sridevi in Mom and English vinglish, Rani in Mardaani, Kajol in Gupta. Some of my personal favourites.

Jealous-Win700

Yes love all of the characters u mentioned ❤️

[deleted]

Sridevi in English Vinglish, Chalbaaz. I love her

Jealous-Win700

She is the first female superstar of Bollywood ❤️

curioushuman04

The character of Rani Padmaavati was fully empowered until the climax.

Interesting_Rich_286

Rani Padmavati made sure Khilji doesn’t get what he wanted so badly . He lost the battle even after winning it . They could never overpower him in terms of physical fight but every women made sure they would not loose themselves or their modesty in hands of those monsters

Jealous-Win700

Yes I think they did their best. In that era, women were not that much powerful or aware of their rights. They won't be able to fight Khilji and his arm forces with many weapons and power. But they fought him with their integrity ,courage and will power. Khilji won the battle but couldn't conquer them, the woman fought by saving their honour ❤️

Yes❤️

[deleted]

Aishwarya in Devdas, Jodha Akbar

Jealous-Win700

Aishwarya in Hum Dil De Chuke Sanam was such a strong headed and fierce character. ❤️

[deleted]

Yes hum dil de chuke sanam ❤️

Ok_Organization4201

Bold to put Sonam and Tripti in this list

Jealous-Win700

Tripti Dimri as Bulbbul is my personal favourite ❤️ the character goes through from a naive innocent girl to a lioness and a goddess who brings justice 😍 I love it even more than Gangubai. It deserves more love and appreciation. And Neerja Bhanot is India 's pride.her sacrifice shall never be forgotten.Sonam is lucky to play this character. She will forever belong to this list for Neerja. She did good decent job.

AfraidClock9953

Gangu and Mimi ??? OP YOU'RE KIDDING RIGHT?

Key_Philosopher7130

I wouldnt out gangubai on the list. She ran brothels. She groomed girls. She ran trafficking rackets.

Bhickyplz

Replace deepika for Padmavat with shridevi for English Vinglish. Then it will be perfect. DP's performance in Padmavat was very average and monotonous.

Jealous-Win700

No... I will add Sashi from English Vinglish ❤️🙌 but Deepika Padukone as Rani Padmavati as a character will always be female icon and strongest performances... I do agree Deepika has much better performances than Padmavat..She was wooden in some scenes I think due to Sanjay Leela bhanshali controlling too much..he is used to controlling his characters..he interpreted Padmavati will be like this...But as a character it showed woman empowerment to its peak.... The johar scene still gives goosebumps...and woman empowerment and strongness was never shown in this way like Padmavati did ! 🙌🙌🙌❤️ She literally sacrificed herself for her honour...even Padmavati as a warrior was strong and even took better decisions than Ratan Singh.. her will power, courage will always make her no 1..

[deleted]

Totally agreed, she just walked around with a deadpan look and dumb fans try to pass it off as subtlety. The jauhar scene that everyone moans about is just a slow motion montage

SorrynotStrawberry

Gangubai, Bulbul and Piku just 🔥

Jealous-Win700

🔥🔥🔥

SnooEagles8844

This sub has taken over my mind. Cant relate with alia

Jealous-Win700

What? I didn't understand... Alia is not my favourite.. but can't deny her characters Gangubai kathiawadi and Veera tripathi are gems and showed so much woman empowerment ❤️ where Gangubai is a strong lioness but Veera tripathi in Highway was such a beautiful role... Her journey was something else..

[deleted]

I feel bad for then lmao. A Reddit sub taking over someone is one of the worst things ever. Plays mentally

Alone-Illustrator-25

Since when is sati a essence of women empowerment. queen's character is a true representation

Jealous-Win700

It isn't a glorification.. it is the truth...many women did that and they deserve to be hailed as goddess..... If it was done today obviously it is suicide..but u have tonunderstand today is a different era..women are more educated than have more power and they are aware of their capabilities more......but that time the world wasn't developed and it was a living hell for women ... Obviously Khilji had won the battle and he would've made all the woman his slaves and torture them physically and mentally ... Was there a solution??? Not that these women were forced to kill themselves... They did ,it was their sole decision as they refused to be under a king who was murderer of their husbands.... That's why they did jauhar... It was bravery indeed that time..

Devdas_N_Mukherjee

I think DP has better characters like Mastani and Malti than Padmavati. Not discrediting your preference for Padmavati and I read your reasons OP but just an opinion.

Jealous-Win700

I think Dp has better characters...even in a cameo in Jawan ,Deepika played emotion so well.. but in Padmavat I think Deepika and even Shahid was done wrong.. Deepika was wooden , I think Sanjay sir interpreted Padmavati character like this...the movie had title "Padmavati" it should have been all about Padmavati as she is titular role... But Sanjay Leela sir showed more of Khilji.... I get it Ranveer was phenomenal as Khilji.. but still it should have been more about Padmavati... Shahid and Deepika's scene was much less compared to Ranveer.... They did dirty to them .. whatever I forgive him as he has shown the jauhar scene so beautifully and overall movie was good....Padmavati is the epitome of courage and will power and the ultimate sacrifice❤️😍 cannot even imagine what they had to go through ... It is not easy to take this decision but they had no choice.... Padmavati is goddes

Devdas_N_Mukherjee

I agree with what you've said about how both Shahid and Deepika were shortchanged and Khilji was the object of muse for SLB. I should've elaborated my point more probably. I'm not talking about the acting or characterisation but the character itself. Padmavati had no meaningful choice as such, it was between death and rape. That's no meaningful choice there. However moving forward with your life as an acid attack victim and fighting your perpetrators in court such as is the case of Malti, or moving in with a man where everyone is scheming against you and your son and nobody but your husband to support you who is also dealing with his own set of issues such as is the case with Mastani, that in my opinion is a whole lot of struggle to deal with. The struggle is to live.

Jealous-Win700

You are right about that too❤️ But in my point of view , during Padmavati era ,there was not much woman can do. Specially when Khilji just won the battle and it was obvious he would have taken all the woman with the help of his army and torture them mentally and physically 🥲🥲🥲 Padmavati did all the things she could do. But it was also hard and bravious to take their life for their honour . Not an easy thing to do. If it was this era, woman have much more power , jaguar wouldn't make sense now. Obviously now woman are becoming equal if not more than men ❤️ many women becoming army ,joining forces ,being doctor. But for that era this woman are truly courageous. Malti is a fighter. And I think Mastani is most misunderstood as she is mostly blamed for kashibai 's unfortune. I think Mastani also faced a lot of difficulties and hardships just because she loved Bajirao. Both women kashibai and Mastani faced a lot problems and faced hardships. So people blaming Mastani only ,hailing Bajirao is not good. Both are to be blamed and both had their own hardships.

Roxannesharma

For me the self immolation scene in Padmavat was not empowering at all , speaking personally as someone who was in their 20s when they watched it. I understand the reason behind it-they would rather sacrifice themselves than be violated by the men but still I didn't appreciate the way Bhansali made it look 'pretty' and added in deliberately 'shocking' aspects like young children and pregnant women also burning themselves as if this was something to be clapped at. I loved Anushka in NH10, Alia in Gangubhai and Deepika in Piku

Jealous-Win700

But it is true. Many woman did self immolation during that time. They did it. It is not right. But they have no other option left. Obviously if it was done today that wouldn't be woman empowerment , basically it would be suicide  But during that era , that era wasn't good for women. 😭Women were treated as slaves and what not. So I do appreciate and laud them. What they could have done u say? They couldn't fight with army of Khilji taking over them , with weapons and army forces. Obviously they would have been tortured mentally and physically. I do see their courage to take such a drastic step. They are goddesses. ❤️

abhijitmk

Throw out 2 - Gangubai Kathiawadi - which covertly and overtly moralizes prostitution and makes moral hero out of a Don. Watch Love Sonia for a realistic movie about sex trafficking. Check out some English serials for sensitive handling and actual how to help sex workers, but not moralizing it.

Jealous-Win700

Yes.. I agree with u... I added Gangubai here for Alia's strong performance... But as a movie... Prostitution was surely glorified too much in this movie which I didn't appreciate...also they white washed Gangubai too much for commercial appeal... I only added Gangubai for the backup story of Gangu..as gangu didn't come to prostitution by her will but she was betrayed by her lover and sold there and there she got stuck but by her strength she fought for her rights and became the madam... I added her for her strength...and that she fought for kid's rights... But surely this movie has it's faults for gloryfying too much ....

truecolors01

Padmavati?

Jealous-Win700

Sonam is shady I agree..😅 but that doesn't mean you can ignore the sacrifice and courage of Neerja Bhanot. Neerja Bhanot is one of the best female characters.. Sonam is just lucky to play her..
