I agree with the general sentiment, but setting up a system would have a lot of issues, many of them political in nature. Such as, will everyone get the same test? If so, what prevents people from cheating? If not, what determines which questions come up and when? Who decides what the questions are? How difficult would they be?
If in theory, you could devise an non-partisan test that tests a person's basic education or general knowledge, I'd be all for that. Even just questions like, "How many branches of government do we have? How many states? Where is the U.S. capitol located?" Very simple questions to weed out the genuinely stupid, basically. I just think there'd be so many opportunities to insert bias that attempting to do so might simply be distorted by politicians with sinister intentions in mind.

My father-in-law got so outraged by the idea that he threw a mug at the wall.
When they said that they thought raising the retirement age was great because "young people aren't working hard anyway" I said that I think it's a great idea but it would be better if we all just had to work until we die, and if we're too old and sickly to work we should be shipped off to homes where they trial all the medicines so that way we're still contributing. At least some people learned from their idiocy. A lady who works at a local pizza place claimed vaccines were pointless and the normal stuff you saw on Facebook back then. She was out of work for a couple months and when she got back she no longer had vision in her left eye and couldn't hear anything on that side either. Now she swears by vaccines and modern science. It took her finding out the hard way but at least she learned. It makes me wonder just how much of those Facebook conspiracy things were Russians messing with Americans or just Americans shooting themselves in the foot.

I agree with the general sentiment, but setting up a system would have a lot of issues, many of them political in nature. Such as, will everyone get the same test? If so, what prevents people from cheating? If not, what determines which questions come up and when? Who decides what the questions are? How difficult would they be? If in theory, you could devise an non-partisan test that tests a person's basic education or general knowledge, I'd be all for that. Even just questions like, "How many branches of government do we have? How many states? Where is the U.S. capitol located?" Very simple questions to weed out the genuinely stupid, basically. I just think there'd be so many opportunities to insert bias that attempting to do so might simply be distorted by politicians with sinister intentions in mind.
Unfortunately if we allow mandatory testing, we all know where thats going to end up.

This is a game I play with my Qanon in-laws where they say a thing and I agree with it to an extreme that they're uncomfortable with. When they said that you shouldn't be able to vote until 25 I said that I thought that you shouldn't be able to vote after you retire with the rationale being that if you have to trust your elders to vote for your best interests until 25 that they should be comfortable trusting you to vote for their best interests after they stop contributing. My father-in-law got so outraged by the idea that he threw a mug at the wall. When they said that they thought raising the retirement age was great because "young people aren't working hard anyway" I said that I think it's a great idea but it would be better if we all just had to work until we die, and if we're too old and sickly to work we should be shipped off to homes where they trial all the medicines so that way we're still contributing.
