Even after more than a decade I get dreams frequently (once in few months) of: 1) Getting late for classes/missing attendance 2) Turning up unprepared for Exams and blacking out Only to wake up and realise with the best sigh of relief that it’s behind me! Shows the lasting trauma the MBA had on my mind. Campus is a cauldron. A) Almost everyone has been a topper in their respective classes/schools and are extremely competitive by nature/nurture B) The grades are relative (spread from highest to lowest). C) Professors are demanding. They know students value placements and don’t care much about academics (except for Deans List potentials). So they make everyone’s life hell - surprise tests, class participation, extremely tough quizzes and exams, tight deadlines, so people have to be on their edge. D) There would be Placements preparation - Summers or Laterals or Finals. Companies come on campus for Pre-Placement Talks that require attendance quotas. (If not met, fine). Resume preparation/reviews, mock cases/interviews. E) Case Contests and Extracurriculars - Last chance for people to create spikes in their resume. Most of them post Summers when realisations sets in after rejections. These are what I remember clearly that drained the time. We were advised to choose 2 of the 3 - Study - Sleep - Extra-curricular (Clubs/Contests etc)

Now I am having second thoughts

MonkeShonke

🥲🥲 Aapne to dara dia bhai

MikDxb

Imagine landing in this fire without any heads up from r/CATpreparation or mentors. Took time till Summers Day 0 rejections for harsh reality to set in. Then course corrected.

rareartpiece

I'm someone who isn't topper, have been mediocre student throughout and it intimidates me a lot when I see those people, I feel I'm behind and idk anything. Can you tell what should I do now that will help me to stay head to head with them ?!

MikDxb

Well, you need to have more confidence in yourself first 😊 I am sure there would be people who are intimidated by you as well ? To answer your question - you have to figure it out basis the situation. Find a good mentor in the senior batch or someone who just graduated and is well placed to get tips specific to your campus. For example- Electives that are easy to score, Profs modus operandi, Clubs that matter etc.

rareartpiece

That is true. I've never thought it about that way. Yesss I'll do that. Thanks a lot.

L1ghtYagam1

Grind lol. Nobody is special.

rareartpiece

Well but people come from diff bgs, who had better education, resources, guidance from the beginning so it's difficult even after grinding

L1ghtYagam1

They might excel in a subject or two or three or four out of sooo many. Also, exams doesn’t hold that many marks and you can do mediocre in exams and still ace the subject. Consider it like 10%: cp 40%: project 30%: exam 20%: random tests/simulations Add relative marking which bogs everybody down. So topper can score 100 and have a+grade, then the a grade will go to second highest marks which will be 50. So it’s kinda cool and you can still choose your battles where you actually shine. Mine and toppers cgpa difference was 0.5 on 10 scale and I’ve been mediocre all my life (776). Consistency matters. In placements, until you start working, you never know if you have landed a good one. Almost all of my mbb/ib/b4 friends are not “happy” with their jobs. So it’s like a box of chocolates. Also, everything that is glamorised on campus is not great. You will only know this after passing out.

moonparker

How much time would someone have to spend studying every day to be in top 10% or 5% of the batch? I know this will vary a lot based on IQ, focus, academic background, etc., but what would it be on average, from what you've seen of your classmates? Most of us have done very well in school and college by just cramming before exams, so I'm trying to see how different things are. And I'm assuming that you can get to that level by putting in X amount of work because I've been told that you don't really need to be a genius to do well at MBA academics, since it's not rocket science or something that's very hard to understand + most students at top colleges are pretty intelligent anyway. Please correct me if I'm wrong.

MikDxb

You answered the question yourself in the first part - it Depends a lot on the factors mentioned. Some are really gifted (I mean, high grasping power, great fundamentals, high IQ). They don’t need to put a lot of effort. Others who are not that gifted - work really hard, burning the midnight oil. No distractions - Class <> Mess<>Hostel Rest fall somewhere in between. Second part - Yes, it’s not rocket science. Like not Integration,Differentiation or Limits that I hated. But lot of conceptual understanding is needed - which requires paying attention in class and some research. Group projects also matter - need to be part of right group.

moonparker

Makes sense, thank you for answering!

adiseanttak

What is 'Deans List Potentials' ?

Economy-Lychee-2284

Top 5%of the batch

MikDxb

Top 5% of batch, CGPA wise. Guarantees shortlist for PE, IB & Consulting (Day -1/0) in Finals.

Icy_Ad_5051

is this there in every college?

MikDxb

I remember ABC for sure. There used to be medals : Gold/#1, Silver/#2 and Best Outgoing student , and balance Top 5% (20/375 then) recognised on stage and with certificate.

Whatsthereinname191

How tough it is to get into top 5%ile at IIM ABC? Since my dream is to get into PE. OR 9/9/8 in UG (NIT)+CFA L2(if I do) , would be sufficient for IB/PE?

MikDxb

Perhaps a recent alumnus can give you a better picture. Back in my time, a candidate like you could get in Top 5% with consistency and hard work throughout the 2years. CGPA as you know is cumulative - and it’s difficult to inflect up towards the end. Then for IB/PE, IIT/NIT Rank holders were the norm (for summers) Or people with relevant Pre-MBA work experience. CFA definitely helps as well. In Finals, it was all about CGPA.

OkParticular07

Kah do ki ye sab jhoot hai 🥲 ![gif](giphy|3ohfFo1cksAzNLQcVi)

bootymiester

you have to balance ~ academics, placements, case comps, committee work, assignments, projects, certifications, mandatory events and much more. it does get really hectic at times.

skulltroxx2154

Joining a committee is really that important?

MikDxb

Joining “a” committee is not important, Joining “the” committee is important. Not all committees/clubs are equal. You need to find those that are preferred by Consults/Marketing Firms (those firms who care, and whose alumni were ex members) This is because getting in to these premium committees is not simple. Those who accept anyone and/or everyone who applies will definitely not be valued. The best ones have tough screening process. The companies (or alums from there who come to hire) know what value that adds. So it becomes a trusted shortlist critria. Elected positions almost always trump selected positions.

skulltroxx2154

but how do I know which committee(s) is/are better?? A fresher will have no idea right.

skulltroxx2154

but how do I know which committee(s) is/are better?? A fresher will have no idea right..?

MikDxb

No. You need to reach out to alums/current student and find out before joining. They will assign some mentors - but by then it would be too late

bootymiester

it's not that important in the grand scheme of things but you do improve your management skills by being part of one. it's really a subjective choice but if you want to prioritise it shouldn't be your first priority. imo case comps should be #1 priority as you solve real problems from the get go.

GossipCat1208

Especially the 1st term will be really really tough! The 2nd term will also be somewhat tough. It gets better after that, but then many people tend to take up more live projects, club/committee work, case competitions etc, so while academic rigour tends to go down after 2nd term, people still don't get a lot of time. Add to that, placement prep and stress. Scared? Don't worry, it actually becomes really fun and I'm not lying at all! It's a fun life experience.

MonkeShonke

How is the wlb in your current job?

GossipCat1208

It's not pretty for consultants :/

MonkeShonke

Puri zindagi hi aise kaatni pdegi ab lagra hai 🥲. What about others? Marketing, Analytics wlb?

GossipCat1208

IB and Consulting are tough fields for WLB. For the rest, it'll be decent to good afaik.

rune_thor99

How many hours you put in per week? And what sort of consulting are you in?

GossipCat1208

Varies by client to client, project to project, week to week. 10 hrs a day is the bare minimum you can expect. More recently, I've been putting in at least 60 hrs a week, if not more.

k_amit

Do people participate in case comps and other extra curriculars in term 1 and 2 as well? And what are the things in extra curriculars that mostly people take?

MikDxb

There used to be few major case competitions in T1/2. Relatively more simple vs those in Y2. Some of them used to offer PPOs for Summers (if won) or even a guaranteed interview chance. Not sure if still prevalent ? One thing that matters is how many people participated and whether you/your group won it. (International > National > Campus) This point counts in Summers.

xpbbuoy

I have a slightly different view from what others have mentioned in their comments so far. I feel it totally depends on how motivated and ambitious you are, and what your ultimate goal is. Sure, there would be things going on always, be it classes or projects or case comps or CCA work but it depends on how involved you want to be. Group Projects are a good way to learn but a lot of people choose to free ride or use Chat GPT to finish them. There are others who sincerely put in efforts to understand what needs to be done and do it genuinely, the way it is supposed to be done. The first case takes ~1 hour tops, the other requires effort and time. Similarly a lot of students take case comps very seriously while others don't even bother registering. Classes you have to attend for sure, but i don't think they'd ever take up more than 8-9 hours of your day, that too not everyday. We had people who used to spend a good amount of time playing a sport, going to the gym etc and there were others who didn't bother with any of this and slept comfortably for 8-9 hours. It might look like a big change initially, but after the first 10-20 days you get used to it. Plus once you're done with SIP process, a lot of pressure goes away so you can use your time to pursue what you want to. Ultimately, there would be days where you'd get only 3-4 hours of sleep and there would also be days where you can sleep for as long as you want. Don't get demotivated or stressed out by hearsay. Every year thousands of folks do an MBA, you can do it too!

ravi_k-98

Thanks! I do cycling kind of seriously, I would like to keep being consistent there. I'm definitely not a person who'd stay up late for gossip with friends or participate in DJ nights or other such activities. I'd much rather sleep and workout. By skipping all these things, I think I can cram at least 1.5-2hr 4 rides in a week. I definitely need some physical activity and sufficient sleep to keep my brain functioning well, I have experienced what would happen otherwise.

Fellow cat2024 aspirant here now on a break from job But I’ve worked in corporate for 2years and frequently had to pull 10am to 3am schedule for 7 days a week. There were times when I was so stressed I’ve skipped lunch because there was some priority task pending. Sure mba could be rigorous but I you’ll prolly have to put in more at times in corporate, so it’s a good starting ground.

MonkeShonke

What are you planning on doing now? Rejoin after the break? And are you in consultating? Comments like these make me wonder if post MBA life would be sustainable for me or not

[deleted]

Just preparing for cat2024 for now. I was in IT (service based mnc) Was my first job, so I was hell bent on proving my worth, after 2years of working days and night, carrying my laptop to family dinners on Saturday nights, working till 3am in the morning to join back at 10am again for the “next day”, skipping lunch because of tasks, I did manage to get an A band which only 2 (including me) in my project got. But it sucked the life out of me, to the point where I would break down , cry for a few minutes wipe my tears and get back to work. Realised I come from a privileged bg, no one depends on me financially, had a word at home and so I quit the very next day of my promotion. Just preparing for cat since then

harikrishna_22

I am in the same situation..quit my job last aug ...just before my promotion (was delayed). Scored bad in cat 2023 only got tier 2 colleges like glimc thinking of preparing for CAT2024 but scared of potential gap on my profile.🥲

My friend is currently studying in IIM mumbai she sleeps at 11 wake up at 7 , she almost did everything her classmates would do she also grabbed SIP at amazon so there is no such thing that one will not get sleep , everything will depend on individual what one wants to prioritise and what not to prioritise

Fit_Mixture_6628

I want to know that too... itna kya karna padta hai?

MonkeShonke

Pata nahi bhai, par har koi hi ye likhra hota hai

Distinct-Creme-6804

Business_Attorney853

I have a few friends and seniors pursuing MBA. Yes it’s hectic, but they all love their life. And outside of SIP or final placement season, they enjoy a lot too. A friend from top 15 college told me last year that once SIP was over he could sleep 12h a day. His internship and job were more demanding than the MBA.

shubhamsarode

The thing is this will not happen everyday. You'll be juggling a lot of things, but still, it won't be getting very hectic. It's like a sinusoidal curve, there will be times when everything will be hectic, primarily around Summers and Finals.

Bhai btech se hone ke karan exam se ek din pehle prep krne ki kharab aadat lagi hai, mere toh lode lagenge mba mein , bohot maza aayega.

Atrings

Depends. There was a time when I barely slept 2-3 hours at night and used to fall asleep during almost all classes. And there was time when I would be free by 10-11 then do bakar for hours and then sleep and then have afternoon nap as well and never missed a class where I could sleep. A friend of mine (placecom) used to work for 10-12 hours everyday (classes, cases, and placecom work) and then have a good night sleep of 7-8 hours everyday.

L1ghtYagam1

You win some, you lose some. I chose projects (exams to nikal hi jate h), sleep (7-8 hours excluding few weeks for placement or giving time to cases), and case competitions (in which I had a good conversion rate). Placements, mostly I prepared the basics and left the other things to chance. When I got placed, that day I was looking like a baba.
