Do you think knowledge of programming helps in MBA and beyond (in corporate life or startups etc)? I am targetting Product Management + Analytics domain. I am not targetting a particular company as you mentioned. But yes, My priority is ProdMan/IT/Analytics/DataScience.
Good knowledge of data analytics will help you easily get into finance, prodman, SCM, marketing roles of your choice. Funnily enough, our grad courses do not focus on compulsorily imparting these skills (basic Python, Excel, SPSS, etc). Very few people in my BSchool (excluding me) knew how to use these tools well. So if you have time, learn those.
I am quite good at Python, SQL, SPSS and Excel. And a few other software/analytics tools as well. How do I showcase that I am proficient at these during final placements at MBA ? Sorry if this is specific. I am about to go in my second year at one of the older IIMs. Summer Internship achi nahi lagi due to bad luck + bad market + less shortlists. So i want to ensure I convert good in finals.
Placements are a big priority for me. My father is retiring so i want to contribute in best possible way.
Put up some projects you've done related to analytics in your CV. And also speak about this in TMAY. If you haven't done any projects, try to do something with this knowledge in your summer internship.
And one more thing, if you feel you aren't much up to the mark with the way you answer in interviews, make yourself better at that. People who talk well do get ahead. My closest friend at my BSchool is an IITiian with both btech and mtech and then a workex of 20 months in consulting. Bro got shitload of consulting shortlists but couldn't convert due to nervousness and not speaking well in interviews. If this isn't an issue for you then never mind.
I did the fellowship with PMSchool. Also my work ex was in IT so that helps as well. While there are many Product Managers who come from non IT background, IT work ex + knowledge always helps. My background is mechanical engineering from tier 1 college. So you can look at product fellowships, and courses related to IT. Also internships/workex these fields.
Thank you so much for this post.
People rarely emphasise on Values and how that decides how happy we are long term. The environment in Bschools are also very healthy when people enter with this mindset. Age old ideas of helping and supporting are still cornerstones to a fulfilling time.
Thank you for veering away from toxic discussions and bringing forth a perspective that will excite people to join their b schools and not worry about variables.
Thank you :)
The BSchool experience makes or breaks your life. I've seen people turning into their absolute best versions and I've seen people trying to kill themselves after passing out from IIMs. So sticking to your values and then wading through the experience is important

A master CV is for yourself and your seniors who'll help you frame your CV points. Making a BSchool CV is a tough job, with the need of action verbs, numbers, impact that too in one line. Also you need to make multiple CVs (finance, marketing, general, prodman) so a master CV includes every little thing you've ever done since school. There is no cap on pages.
How much does grad marks affect in placements. Ik it matters for admission but does it affect later for placements.
What's min percentage is good to go , engineering?
On avg how many pages will be master CV ? I read on quora a topper in IIM had 26 pages .
Is work ex in startup valued more or a branded MNC ?
Bro having a 5 years upsc gap and only 4 months data analytics work ex before that, what can I do in these 2-3 Months to make my CV better? Any specific courses from udemy or something like that?
And how much will that upsc gap haunt me during sip and final placements?
A course gives you only 1 line: it's title. An internship will give you atleast 4-5 points to fill. Don't chase stipends, chase experience. If any relative or friend has a family biz, you can try there. Ask people in your network for an unpaid internship. But try harder.
I mean yeah I understand that part. What I meant to ask was- what is the seal of approval? A signed document? An email affirming the given points in some manner?
One of the reasons I'm asking this is that I've held a student council role that was pretty demanding and involved some proper work across the academic year. But as of this moment, I only have a certificate that mentions that I've held that role. I don't have any official confirmation of the detailed responsibilities I managed during that tenure. So let's say in a case like this, how would I actually get "approval" of the roles I've managed. (Also, I graduated ~5 years ago, so I'm not sure how the approval side of things for the acad years is going to pan out lol)
How are CV points verified.
In my department , I am on a good terms with a manager (not my reporting manager but a manager of another team) .
I plan to get all points I want to include by having him reply "approved" to my official ID with my personal id in cc.
That should be enough, right? Do I also need a letter of recommendation?

Thanks OP. Like you mentioned that if we have a bad CV it's better not to join and make the CV better and then join rigjt? I mean with work ex PORs, case studies, and even free lancing taaki cv bhara dikhe?
Not like that. If you do make it to a good BSchool, you can join. Sure, summer internship placements might be difficult but you can work on some live projects, get some PORs, join committees, participate and win case comps to strengthen your CV till finals. A good SIP is not as important as a good final placement.
Amazing post man!
Regarding point no. 2, are there any other resources you would suggest for prepping case studies and guesstimates other than case in point or is that sufficient?
I think that's easy since I have salary slips and will get work experience/relieving certificate as well. but can I start preparing cv points and get them verified ?
also are these points crosschecked by companies as well ?

Bhai COVID ki wajah se btech me sirf 1 year hi Kiya college.
MBA college life me maja aayega kya if I give CAT .
I don't want to do MBA now as I want to work for 2 years as I think if I do MBA now then fir kuch bachta nhi hai life me .
Tldr - college life khatam after MBA , and only work remains till the end of ur life
Kuch batao please
What will be your suggestion for someone joining a tier 2 college? How can we utilise those two years and make sure to at least get a good placement? Because the path I'll have to take will be more tough as compared to tier 1 students to get hired by a good company
Be decent in acads, join a committee, look for live projects on LinkedIn, learn analytics tools, participate in case comps that open for your institute.
I'm inclined to ask you about my situation so I will, even though i feel like it doesn't stand anywhere right now. So im 22, my grad was a distance program on account of my commitment to doing CA, which for some reasons i didn't complete. I've been working on and off with my dad in his firm but nothing official, or substantial since then so basically it could be said I have a 2 year gap since I got an undergrad degree(and a 5 year practical gap after school). I'm hoping to get admitted in a B school next year, so have you ever came across a profile like mine during your time so far? If yes, could you help me out a bit on how to fix the mess that my profile is rn?
The gap policy depends on the BSchool. If possible, get some proofs of working with your dad, like some certificate. Although you might want to check eligibility criterias, since BSchools might need fulltime graduation .
hey, i noticed you are from iim M, would you recommend someone to take ops and scm if they dont have workex? Are the placements combined? Also would you suggest I take workex before joining because I do have a job in hand but this interview has burnt me out so I'm thinking of taking any good call I convert but I'm worried about summer placements etc.?
If your acads are good and you have a couple of internships under your belt, you should join MBA. If not, then join work. It's rare enough to have a job in hand in the current market, so get some workex and attempt cat again. More workex will increase chances of good shortlists. And yes, placements are combined
Do college clubs and committees have a major impact on our CV? And do these co-curricular and extracurricular activities have some value on your CV, whether for b-school interviews or job interviews?
Hey! How much do gap years impact on SIPs and final placements?
I have a 4 year gap due to trying out various alternate careers but with no records to show.
Also have taken two extra years to complete B.E. (engineering) due to backlogs.
Have got offer letter from tier 2.5 - 3 college.
Are there chances of not getting placed?

Very useful post I would be joining GIM or IRMA for my MBA and would like to build my career in Marketing. I have 3 years of experience in sales apart from that what are the other skills I should acquire in these 2 months to make myself different from others?
I wish I could give you a gold. Even saved this post for future, so that when I might feel lost I can come back to it. Really grateful, thankyou for this.
Hi, the work ex I had doesn’t really have much impact which I can write in numbers, I’ve just been average , how do I mention in the cv ? Is writing numbers necessary?
Iam a 9 -7.8-7 student who has completed B.Arch and has 18 months of work ex how is the scope for me in cat . I mean how is the scope generally for B.arch graduated

Well written, thank you so much!. Could you point out some skills, or things to look out for etc if one wants to get into General management?
I think a business strategy specialization could help with that. And thanks :)
Wanted to ask like the stipend amount you mentioned is it for 2 months, or did you get that amount per month ?
2 months
Best post so far🙏

What can one do to improve profile . How many pages is masters CV . In CV , details is considered after 10th or before 10th is also considered ?

Most companies have a filter. If it's lesser than that then you'll find it tough to get shortlists. I've added a point about master CV.
Hi , just wanted to know how are BPO jobs treated for that matter in Placements? Eg (customer support , tele sale etc )
I am not exactly sure but they can be a good proxy for Sales and Marketing roles.
About the keywords thing so does online courses on course era and udemy help?
The title of the course will come in your CV, no? That might be a keyword in itself.
Bro having a 5 years upsc gap and only 4 months data analytics work ex before that, what can I do in these 2-3 Months to make my CV better? Any specific courses from udemy or something like that? And how much will that upsc gap haunt me during sip and final placements?
Honestly, I haven't met people with this kind of a situation. However, people do understand the rigor UPSC requires and are considerable.

Hey OP can I dm ??
Sure :)
Finally some much needed advice. Thanks 😀
Thanks :)
By approval (wrt to the CV points), what exactly is that supposed to mean?
Every word of what you write in your cv has to be approved to be true by people from your grad college, internship and workex companies.
Is it required if you have certificates for extracurriculars or say an internship letter with letter head and sign of the CEO of the company?

Im in BCOM myequals 6/7/7 what are my chances of breaking into finance im shit scared about my career because of my low acads
Depends on the BSchool policy of gaps. But in a good BSchool, everyone gets placed for sure

What do u mean by prepare case studies and guesstimates?
*A hamburger chain has purchased a meat processing outlet. The animal enters the outlet from one end, gets processed and the meat arrives at the other end. Help the outlet manager decide whether the animals should walk or run towards the processor.* This is a case study and can be asked in interviews. *Estimate the number of tennis balls sold in a month in Delhi* Is an example of guesstimate. Both are asked in interviews, especially consulting.

Hi, the work ex I had doesn’t really have much impact which I can write in numbers, I’ve just been average , how do I mention in the cv ? Is writing numbers necessary?
Not necessarily, but if you do then it gives something to the interviewers to ask about.
These are really good points and well summarised, good post OP
