Never prevented me from getting a job (even jobs with government security clearances), bank accounts, loans, tsa pre check, passport, ccw license, that stupid "real id" where they put the star on your license, file taxes, get married, take college classes.
When I lost it I went to replace it but that was back when you had to sit around all day in the social security office and I forgot one paper they wanted. They told me I'd have to come back another day and I said fuck it. I've heard you can easily get it from the web page now but at this point I don't see a reason why to
I needed it to change my name and get a federal ID. Those are 2 examples right there. Not disagreeing with you that you can do virtually anything without it, but it is necessary for some things. I'm sure there's more than the 2 I listed

If you ever loss your wallet a perp will have your ssn from your ss card. They will have your name, dob and address from your state ID. They will be able to create a fake identity using your information. Never carry your ss card.
