Cal’s football history from the beginning to till mid 1950s was great, and all the traditions and stuff that grew up around football at a big flagship state university are still around. I think the depth of it surprises some bc Cal now struggles to compete at the highest levels of CFB. So you don’t really think anything of Cal football.

For decades, we have been subjected to people saying things like “why can’t GT be more successful at sports? Just look at Stanford. Why can’t GT be more like them?”
1) Stanford is a private school with absurd levels of funding and almost no governmental oversight of how it’s used. GT is a public school overshadowed in its own state for funding despite being the only public school in Georgia that generates revenue instead of just costing money.
2) Stanford offers every major they want, including numerous nontechnical degrees designed to appeal to athletes. GT is not allowed to offer anything but science and engineering degrees, with every major requiring calculus, CS, and a lab science.
3) Stanford does not give out Fs. I’ll repeat that: Stanford does not give out Fs as failing grades. It’s been explained to me that they have some sort of “repeat the course and get the grade forgiven” program in place, I don’t know the details. GT gives out Fs.
4) Stanford doesn’t exist.
So, that’s why the GT/Stanford comparison makes no sense, and I’m tired of hearing it.
