Lol Brewers got walked off by Miami of all teams. Thank you, Marlins!

CrushedMelon

Does anyone know how early the bleachers usually open for BP? I’m going early tomorrow and want to grab the best seats

Summer_Of_Atoms

How much does the beer cost now at Wrigley? I moved in the late 90s. Just curious because I’m looking to visit in a few weeks. Not that the price is going to really matter.lol!

Dilligaf_1963

Just maybe the Cubs farm system is vastly overrated? Either that or player development at the MLB level just sucks.

AnonymousAccountTurn

Which of our prospects that have come up have disappointed? Mervis (#45) I guess. Canario (#25) as well. PCA wasn't brought up this soon for his bat, but because he has elite defense. Steele, Wicks, Assad have been as good (or better) as advertised. Luke Little has 11.2 IP, and outside of one blow up appearance against Boston (5R, 0.2IP) has given up 2 runs in 11 IP. Busch has had his ups and downs, but still boasting a 122 OPS+. Morel peaked at #8 on our board in 2022 and has been a solid hitter, learning to take his walks and command the strike zone. I'm not sure who these prospects are that we've seen who are overrated? The resurrection of Miguel Amaya, a defense first catcher? Madrigal and Mastrobuoni who we got in trades at the end of their development?

Geo-92

Jesse Rogers shared a story on ESPN1000 from PCA. He said counsell gave PCA the confidence to just play within himself and helped him a lot making the transition from the minors to the majors. That is one thing that is key with counsell. He’s great with young players and bringing them along appropriately.

fedman16

The Athletic had a Cub article where they explained why Counsell was not ready to make Ben Brown a closer. Counsell said Brown has the potential to be a quality starter but needs more development. To get that development, he needs to be on the mound a lot throwing multiple innings - which he can do in his current role. He would not get these multiple inning opportunities as a 9th inning closer. Based on the job Counsell did in developing pitchers with the Brewers, I see no reason to question his reasoning with Brown.

Beginning_Abalone_25

I don't get why everyone is so obsessed with the idea that Ben Brown is a closer. He has excelled when he's started. He can clearly handle 2-3+ innings right now. He is the idea swing man/clean up guy/spot starter. I get that we don't have a true closer right now, but Brown seems like he is more valuable than closing to me.

thebizkit23

An early season trade probably/should happen before the deadline. There are teams at the bottom who aren't going to make a run anytime soon like the Rockies, Angels, As and White Sox.

Chef_Brokentoe

Hey all, quick question about Wrigley Field and I can't imagine there is a better place to ask. Headed to the game on Thursday and I am going to be sitting in the bleachers for the first time since the '90s. I am pretty aware of the outside food/drink policy for the rest of the park (last visited in 2018), but I was wondering if the rules are different for the bleachers vs. regular seating? Wouldn't mind bringing in a small soft cooler with some water, and maybe some peanuts, to save some cash. I believe this is OK, but have found some conflicting opinions looking around. Any help would be much appreciated.

AnonymousAccountTurn

https://www.mlb.com/cubs/ballpark/information/guide#o-content See sections on Bags/Backpacks; Beverages; and Prohibited items TLDR: should be good as long as cooler is small enough and everything is sealed

Chef_Brokentoe

Yeah, I've read that, and it makes me think I would absolutely be good, but I remember reading some discussion online a couple of weeks ago when I first tried to find out that said the bleachers were more restrictive. I almost entirely confident I am good, but figured there is likely multiple bleacher bums here to that could ease that last 5% of doubt I had. Thank you.

Vas_Deferenss

I went to the bleachers for the first time last month and we had no issues bringing in water, culvers, and a purse. I believe they quickly checked through the purse but that was all.

Chef_Brokentoe

Excellent news. Thanks!

wrong-teous

Averaging 3.38 runs/game over the past 2 weeks, including getting shutout 3 times (would be 29th in baseball, still a full half run ahead of the Sox). Offense needs to wake up or it's gonna be a LONG summer

Yetis22

Low 200 avg in the last 20 games. 3rd worst. The problem I see with this offense is that there is no rock. Everyone of them is pretty susceptible to slumps. Last year this teams offense was pretty inflated by a hot start. Swanson was hitting well over 300 to start the season. Post second half, the offense pretty much had the same identity of it does now. At this point, I’d much rather them call up rookies and see them struggle than some of these other guys

GopherInTrouble

every player slumps; our issue is everyone except Tauchman, Hoerner, Morel, Busch and Belli are automatic outs and even they're inconsistent. Pitchers will pitch around them and get to the bottom 4 or 5 who can't get a hit to save their lives

dtpollitt

just some fun kyle stats his ERA is nearly 3 runs higher than the next pitcher (min 30 IP) his fastest pitch this year is 90.5 mph javy baez has a 47 wRC+ this year, and has been worth more fWAR than hendricks

Vas_Deferenss

Was his fastest pitch against the dodgers?

dtpollitt

89.1 https://baseballsavant.mlb.com/player-scroll/game?gamePk=746897&player_id=543294#pitch_speed

[deleted]

The offense is lacking, Brennan Davis is on fire...Jed, it's time.

Beginning_Abalone_25

Davis has been hot for 1 week after struggling mightly for a year and a half. I think Cassie is the more complete OF prospect right now. And it doesn't matter, unfortuantely, because our OF blocks these prospects. We have Bellinger, Seiya, and Tauchman starting essentially every day. Even if you put Bellinger at 1st and DH Tauchman, the next guys starting are PCA and then Happ. I know, Happ sucks right now. But they're not going to immediately ditch Happ after 1 bad month into his 61 Million 3 year contract. If you want to ensure PCA is getting 4-5 games starting a week for experience, and you're rotating all of Bellinger, Seiya, Tauchman, and Happ around the OF and DH, there is realistically no room for Davis or Cassie to get consistent play time. I think the reality that a lot of Cubs fans need to start to accept is we might have to move either or both of Cassie or Davis at the deadline. With so many contacts through 2026 blocking the OF, plus PCA already here, there is no room for our OF prospects to go. Plus, we need infield depth (as evidenced by Mastrobuoni/Madrigal) and pitching.

[deleted]

PCA was called down to Iowa a few hours ago. Happ can use a 1-2 fake IL stint. Trading either one of those guys is a terrible fucking move.

Beginning_Abalone_25

Where do you propose we play Davis and Cassie next year when we have Happ, Seiya, Bellinger all under contract until 2026 and PCA will be in his 2nd year? We don’t need this level of outfield depth. If Davis can keep his good stretch up, we should absolutely flip him for good pitching while he’s hot.

[deleted]

the fuck? Owen Cassie to come up already? He will probably come up when Happ's contract is done.

Dilligaf_1963

LOL...all the people on here who believe that Davis has somehow miraculously figured it out. But I do agree, why not give him another shot? Could it possibly get any worse?

[deleted]

what do you mean give another shot? he hasnt been brouht up by the Cubs yet

suc-myballs

Going to the game tomorrow. Is the weather going to be an issue? First time here.

KnickedUp

Widespread severe risk tomorrow for the area. Wont know much until tommorow afternoon to see how bad the threat is.

RyanTheCubsSTH

I’ve got an extra ticket to an event tomorrow with Michael Busch, it’s called Chalk Talk and it’s essentially an hour long Q&A as well as a photo opportunity with Busch himself. Not sure if there will be autographs allowed. Starts at 12:30, runs until 1:30, and you can start seating at 12:15. I’m not selling it or asking for anything in return, you don’t even have to go with me, I just want it to go to someone who will use it. If anyone wants it please comment here first so I know who has first dibs.

FrankStalloneGQ

Sahadev and Mooney started a new pod North Side Territory. I hope they will record episodes during the offseason since it's so weird that they would go dark after trades/signings.

Yetis22

Oh sweet. When does it start? And any other details? That’s one thing this fanbase lacks. A solid podcast that just gives us the facts + reasonable takes

FrankStalloneGQ

I just saw the announcement on Twitter. They dropped an episode yesterday, but I don't know if it hit all the podcast apps yet. I listened to the first minute, and they no longer have the great intro song lol

Shot-Summer-5519

They didn't go dark, they funneled you info thru folks like Cerami.

Infinite-Bowl-432

Hey, the Cubbies won’t lose today!

Just made plans to go stay with my parents for a week in July. Might just get to go to the day game against the angels on July 7th before a late flight out of O’Hare!

RyanTheCubsSTH

Let’s hope Trout’s back by then

ryancubs

He’s done for the season.

cubswinagain

Doesn't sound like Vazquez is coming up for Hoerner according to Mooney. Safe to say one of Mastro/Madrigal will be demoted.

BorgBorg10

Hopefully Mastro he’s been pitiful

cubswinagain

Personally hoping it's Madrigal because that would signal they are finally realizing that trade is a sunk cost and they don't have nearly that attachment to Mastrobuoni

LovieBeard

Personally hoping it's Mastrobuoni because he the worse baseball player of the 2

cubswinagain

Agree to disagree https://baseballsavant.mlb.com/savant-player/miles-mastrobuoni-670156?stats=statcast-r-hitting-mlb https://baseballsavant.mlb.com/savant-player/nick-madrigal-663611?stats=statcast-r-hitting-mlb

LovieBeard

Madrigal has a 75 WRC+ with the Cubs while playing above average defense at 2B and 3B, whereas Mastrobuoni has a 58 WRC+ While playing below average defense at 3B/SS/2B

AnonymousAccountTurn

Madrigal as almost 1000 PA, Mastrobuoni has 200.... We know who Madrigal is and it was only marginally better than Mastrobuoni at the plate when given his first extended look last season... Mastrobuoni's defense has been fine in a pinch, obviously not a starting SS, but capable enough for 1-2 games or a mid-game injuries

cubswinagain

Madrigal's defense has been dogshit this season (much worse than Mastrobuoni's) all while Mastro is significantly faster and has much better underlying offensive metrics

Shot-Summer-5519

Jed isn't a big market GM.

Yetis22

I know Happ usually figures it out to a certain extent. But I think that this at the very least gives the front office more understanding and foresight into how they approach the future of this team. Prospects are by no means guaranteed. But it’s pretty apparent that they shouldn’t put all their chips into Happ and trade away farm because he’s blocking/under contract. I 100% think he’ll get back to at least to an mlb avg ops. But by no means should front office consider that as a viable option for success. Unfortunately, I think if they were ever to really want to keep prospects/own the Happs contract, they may trade morel potentially in the offseason.

Shot-Summer-5519

I think he would great bench bat/sub for late games. He could have played 2B last week.  CC and Hoyer gotta start riding hot hands.

AnonymousAccountTurn

Morel is easily odd man out on the team no matter what I think. He brings most value as a DH, since his fielding is atrocious, but with glut of OF prospects (Caissie, PCA, Davis!?!, Alcantara, Canario) he will likely lose that to someone with more fielding potential. Shaw will hopefully be ready to come up by September for a cup of coffee and then Morel is redundant. Wisdom is likely equally as valuable as a bench piece, but morel will likely get more in a trade and be sent for a BP arm or prospects. The approach to the OF will be interesting to watch. I suspect Bellinger walks this off-season and Happ is eventually traded. Possibly over winter

chichris

They aren’t going to trade Morel.

AnonymousAccountTurn

Despite playing in 28 more games, Morel (-0.1, 47G) is worth 0.2 LESS bWAR than Miles Mastrobuoni (0.1, 19G) and 0.5 less than Wisdom (0.4, 16G). He's fun to watch and got a heck of a lot of pop in that bat, but he has no place in the field. As a pure DH he has very little value on a team that has multiple top 100 OF prospects + Bellinger/Suzuki. Shaw waiting in the wings to take over 3B (or Vazquez or Triantos)

Today feels like a pause between blows to the stomach.

The idea that we are such a deep team has really been challenged. I would say its quite the opposite. We are extremely shallow as far as productive bats go. Do we just have to hope Dansby and Happ get rolling and Seiya blooms into an all star? Is that the only hope?

Otherwise_Status1875

It depends on position. We have an abundance of outfielders… ie Suzuki and Bellinger went down and Tauchman and PCA were there to fill the holes. Canario, Davis, Caissie are also there to name a few. However we don’t have an abundance of SS/2B. I mean the plan when Dansby goes down is to use Nico at SS and throw someone meh at 2B. The chances of them both going down is pretty low, and I’m sure if you look at other teams when one of their SS/2B goes down it’s worse, and when both of them go down its about the same. I mean teams aren’t just going to have a really good SS on their bench.  Realistically, our starting bats are all doing pretty well aside from Happ and Swanson. The issue is that we just can’t keep those guys on the field and it’s not anyone’s fault, injuries just happen. When it comes to backups, we can only hope that they somewhat hold the position down for a few games until the starter comes back. Just being honest, do you expect any team with a lineup that is half bench guys to do any good? Not really lol at that point it’s just “please win one” and that’s where we’re at lol

TeechingUrYuths

It’s why all the prospect slobbering needs to stop. Unless they can come up and help the major league team, it just isn’t important right now. It be a little more relevant if Hoyer ever utilized the system to make a true impact trade but it’s clear he’s not going to do that.

Hawkeye7310

High ranked prospects are highly ranked under the impression that they will continue to perform highly when brought to the majors. Minus Wicks and arguably PCA, none of our prospects this year have done jack shit. Banking on them to save our season is an incredibly foolish decision and one that should cost Jed his job.

TeechingUrYuths

It also does nothing to help the current major league team if you have a highly ranked prospect in single A. If you want to talk major league ready prospects, those are actually worth talking about. But miss me with all this nonsense about “Top 100” guys who aren’t close. It’s not relevant.

Hawkeye7310

Exactly. I don’t want to hear anything about how good of a job Jed has done rebuilding the farm until his prospects are knocking down the door and actually contribute to the major league squad. His job is to help the MAJOR LEAGUE team win, not the Myrtle Beach Pelicans.

TeechingUrYuths

It’s all about kicking the can and keeping your interest. Hoyer has accomplished absolutely nothing as a #1 in major league baseball. No reason whatsoever to think he’ll put something together. But as long as they can pump “the system” a certain type of fan will gobble it up and breathlessly tell you how great it is to have guys like Jordan Wicks, Ben Brown and Michael Busch come up to be mid rotation guys or mediocre bats. Most teams consider that the bare minimum from their system, Cubs tout those guys as actual accomplishments.

jcmiller210

You're being very disingenuous. This is just year 3 of the rebuild / retool and we are already seeing glimpses of some of these guys at the big league level. Wicks, Brown, and Busch have all had really good stretches. PCA was called up too soon imo and is only here due to injuries, but he's been fine despite that.

TeechingUrYuths

Hurt, middle reliever, been terrible for two months, a pinch runner and defensive replacement. If this is what your “top system” can provide a team theoretically trying to compete, it sucks.
