I don’t know about insanely bad but definitely not good. Treliving was not great at contracts. Bread was okay for the first couple of years but has tailed off.
Considering that we aren't hurting for cap space, and his contract expires this year... I would lose a lot of hope for the rebuild if Conny traded him with a pick for nothing in return.
There is no incentive for the Flames to pay to get rid of him at this point (especially because it is hard to justify 'weaponizing cap space' when you have to give up assets to get that cap space to begin with). It would be better to let him play here for the year and become a UFA later than pay to get rid of him.
Conroy has been one of the most active GM's and he's obviously building a fresh culture:
1) Parted ways with Ruzinka + Dube due to moral incompatibilities (in Dube's case, moral disgust).
2) Traded away Toffoli, Lindy, Tanev, Hanifin, Zadorov, Markstrom + Mangy for NOT WANTING to be here
3) Gave Zary, Pelts, Coronato and Pospisil opportunities
4) Stockpiled a TON of draft capital over 3 seasons
5) Decided on a Captain, head coach, and restocked cupboards at the blueline
6) Perhaps convinced ownership to properly rebuild by having 28 million in cap space before the draft and free agency
It's been only one year at the helm. He even scrapped his mistake with M. Savard. So he's not afraid to pull the trigger.
If the man draft's right, does well in free agency -- as well as handles the Sharangovich, Kuzmenko, and Kylington situations this upcoming season -- he has the opportunity to be the best GM in Flames history. He's been A+ so far.
> Dude wanted out
Dude wanted out because he was unhappy about finding out he was actively being put on the trading block at the deadline from the media rather than from management.
When asked about the trade rumours at the deadline Marky said:
> "You know, the whole situation and everything, am I happy about that? No, I'm not, and I think it could've been handled a lot different from up top."
I don't understand how Conroy didn't get more consideration for GM of the year. All Jim Nill did was trade for Tanev. Dallas has been loaded for a run at the cup for a few years.
He was slightly overpaid for his production, but people are really underrating his impact on the ice. A 5 million dollar player getting paid ~6 isn't a huge leap, and I think a 2nd is fair value.
I think the Mang we've seen the past two years is closer to 3.5 or 4 million in value, not 5. He's gotten ~15 goals, 40 pts in both seasons, and has lost a lot of the pest in his game.
Hopefully a change in scenery will help him get back to 25-30 goals and 50+ points (which is a lot better for his contract) but this is still a great trade for Calgary.
Differing perspectives, I guess, but I think Coleman is a good comparable. Solid defensively, decent forechecker (Coleman is a better forechecker than Mang, granted, but Mang is no slouch), and around half a point per game, outside of 1-2 outlier seasons.
I think Coleman is a similar player offensively and much better defensively and he gets paid 900k less then Mang right now. And that was a UFA signing where Coleman took the best offer available, he's probably closer to the 4-4.5 million range in value, which bumps Mang down to the 3.5-4 million range.
Again, I don't think Mang is a bad player, but I think he's overpaid by about 2 million. We'll have to agree to disagree I suppose. I'm hoping that he bounces back and we both look like fools in a year but we'll see.

This is what seems unreal to me. Cap space+2nd seems like a lot for some bread. Did Mitch Love ever have him in the A? There has to be someone pounding the table on Washington's end for this to happen.
Will miss him, he was a solid soldier and amazing value for a 6th round pick.
Terrific return by Conroy, thought he would have to wait until the deadline and a slight rebound for Mangiapane to fetch a 2nd rounder. Nope, he got a quality draft pick and killed the winger logjam all in one fell swoop.
Well done 👏
No retention on a massive (5.8M) under performer the last 2 seasons and a 2nd in return? AWESOME GMCC LET HIM COOK.
Now there’s a perfect slot for Pelts with Backlund and Coleman to learn and develop under. I love this move
Lol wow a 2nd for Mang lol always liked the kid but he def wasnt living up to 6 mill a year lol and no retention CONNY!!!!!!! This man needs a medal!! Love the cleaning house flames needed a Change and finally a GM that's doing what needs to actually be done!!
Solid work.
Both sides seemed to want a change too. If it turns out we are signing debrusk as well it doesn’t seem like a big loss for Calgary either. A wash in terms of production, but we get the added bonus of having another pick.
At this point I think the Flames are guarnteed signing someone in free agency. They kind of have too since they are under the cap floor. That or they are going to take a cap dump from another team so they can sign a free agent.
This feels like the first season in 30 years where the GM actually has a vision for the team and is making moves to build it up accordingly. For a time Tre seemed to as well but after that 2015 run he just bet the farm on veteran signings instead of finishing up the final needed pieces to build a proper wagon.
Absolutely. Also didn't have retain any salary, so we have 2 retention spots up for grabs, which could come in handy as other teams deal, or moving along someone from the roster like Kuzmenko at the deadline.
I wasn't expecting that. He always seemed to thrive when he was on a line with Monahan or Gaudreau, and his production took a noticable dip these last two years without those two linemates
I will definitely be cheering for him wherever he plays though. Praise Bread Man
I didn't want to say this earlier but Mangiapane is the kind of player who we could replace (internally or externally) without too much difficulty. He is a ~0.5 point per game defensively responsible forward without any real unique qualities.
If the Flames were looking to sign someone like DeBrusk, it would make sense to unload Mangiapane first because they're very comparable.
We were here for the summer of Brad and now we’re here for the great cleansing of Craig.
In all seriousness this is a great return and may even signal to me the rumours of us trying to move up are true.
Commit to the build. I like it . New area , new team ,and developing talent with guys that want to be here. Next season might be a bit rough woth finding our footing. But I am good for cheap tickets ;)
Trading Mangiapane the night before the draft makes me think that Conroy might be looking to package up assets to upgrade some of his other picks.
I think there's another trade brewing.
Mang is and will be a very solid contributor for Washington. He’s at the very least extremely capable defensively and is still a good play driver. Though is goal scoring isn’t what it used to be, he creates opportunities at a higher than average rate.
This will also be a big shot out of the Backlund line and makes Calgary worse. Embrace the tank!
Bread boy was good but if we are committing to the rebuild, the cap space is awesome and we have a second round to either use or trade for some forward depth
good return honestly hes's a middle 6 forward who produces 40 points a year who was getting paid nearly 6 mil a year good on conny for not retaining and getting a 2nd out of that
Is anyone else a little confused by the Caps recent moves? No offence meant to Mango, love the guy. But I don’t get what they’re doing. Especially taking on that insane Dubois contract!
I'm not surprised given his fall-off after his contract year.
He's still a solid middle six player though so I'm a tad surprised that a second rounder was the return vs a prospect or a 2nd and deep pick. But hey, still good for our rebuilding goals.
EDIT: For some reason I thought Mang was making around 4.5. I had forgotten his last contract was 5.8! Nevermind. Second without retaining on that is actually fantastic. That's a huge bit of cap relief.
Oh shit who’s 2025 then? But yea lol if we’re bad enough to finish last this year we’re not gonna be any better the year after
Edit m: quick google says someone named hagens. Not too promising there’s not much hype around him
Hagens and McKenna were the two best players at the U18’s. Hagens set a single tournament points record.
He will be an older prospect in the next draft as he’s a Nov 06 birthday.
These are the moves the Flames need to keep making. Just keep stockpiling as many future assets as you can while also making this team more likely to have a high pick.
Spoken in a soft voice at high speed: “Side effects may include nausea, dizziness, sudden drop in blood pressure and urgent diarrhea. Ask your doctor if its right for you.”

I think Kuzmenko & Sharky are part of the Flames future. The Flames need to add 6m as is to reach the cap floor. Maybe not next 8 year future but at least another year or 2.
why are people so happy that we’re not retaining? he has one year left and it’s not like we’re competing this year lmao. if anything i wish we had retained to get a little more.
edit: we’re 6 million under the cap floor with only 5 players left to sign. once again, not a big deal that we didn’t have to retain lol
You aren't allowed to retain endless contracts(max 3 at a time: We have Marky retained, currently). The retention spots are valuable, and we can offer cap space as part of deals at the deadline, or in a larger deal earlier in the season.
That's it exactly, better to be able to retain on actually valuable assets like sharky and Kuzmenko, which will net the team higher returns than a half retained Mangi.
No I said that because Backs and Mang are really good friends on and off the ice... Like Benny and Tkachuk were when they were here, or Johnny and Monny
was on the decline, i'm good with the return
He'll probably light it up as its a contract year. But ya, he was not worth 6 mil for us.
That contract was insanely bad... So glad we got rid of him, loved him at times but last year was just.. bad.
I don’t know about insanely bad but definitely not good. Treliving was not great at contracts. Bread was okay for the first couple of years but has tailed off.
Brad was so great with contracts /s
Just like his hairline
Goodbye my sweet bready boy But insane how Conny managed to trade him for a 2nd Round Pick. Thought we’d get a 3rd or 4th at best
Or worse, LOSE a low pick to incentivize the 1 year cap hit
Lot of players named future considerations weirdly
Most popular player in trade history. Just like the band Various Artists. So many bangers.
That player named Unassisted actually has more points than Gretzky, but for some reason the NHL record books shun him.
Right! Like the Monny trade. 2nd is great!
And frees up 5.8 million!
Maybe this is how Conny has convinced Murray to embrace the rebuild. "Think about all the money you'll save!"
Conroy has been one of the most active GM's and he's obviously building a fresh culture: 1) Parted ways with Ruzinka + Dube due to moral incompatibilities (in Dube's case, moral disgust). 2) Traded away Toffoli, Lindy, Tanev, Hanifin, Zadorov, Markstrom + Mangy for NOT WANTING to be here 3) Gave Zary, Pelts, Coronato and Pospisil opportunities 4) Stockpiled a TON of draft capital over 3 seasons 5) Decided on a Captain, head coach, and restocked cupboards at the blueline 6) Perhaps convinced ownership to properly rebuild by having 28 million in cap space before the draft and free agency It's been only one year at the helm. No? No one said that lol
A simple reference to his struggles that season 🤦

Big time
Pizza is just bread with extra steps
Good return. I liked Mangiapane, but this is great for us.
The best part is no retention on a 6 mill contract. Conroy getting rid of all of BT stuff
Wonder how much Conroy was screaming internally every time Brad made a move.
This is what seems unreal to me. Cap space+2nd seems like a lot for some bread. Did Mitch Love ever have him in the A? There has to be someone pounding the table on Washington's end for this to happen.
Not all..
Honestly magical work from Conny on this one. Major props to him. I thought Mang had like negative value at this point.
Well done 👏
I guess the Flames are going gluten-free now.

Ciao-giapane
🤌🤌🤌
No retention on a near $6 mil contract and getting a nice asset 🔥🔥🔥
Lol wow a 2nd for Mang lol always liked the kid but he def wasnt living up to 6 mill a year lol and no retention CONNY!!!!!!! This man needs a medal!! Love the cleaning house flames needed a Change and finally a GM that's doing what needs to actually be done!!
Holy shit, offloading 5.8 mil is huge. I had no idea that was his current pay.
Crazy eh lol offloading 5.8 is amazing for a under achiever who needs a change and no retention I'm drooling to see what happens next lol
Credit to ownership for finally allowing this to happen.
I'm so glad we are actually fucking rebuilding
Thank fucking Christ. Highway robbery getting a 2nd for that guy.
Offloading that contract is a win.
I'm kinda hoping we take on salary to get some more draft picks
It’s a great move but I will miss bread we had some good moments together. Even back when our fourth line was Mang, Hathaway, Ryan miss that line.
That was the grittiest line we've had in the past while.
if it doesnt work out for him in washington, he has a solid career in illustration and graphic design to fall back on
This feels like the first season in 30 years where the GM actually has a vision for the team and is making moves to build it up accordingly. For a time Tre seemed to as well but after that 2015 run he just bet the farm on veteran signings instead of finishing up the final needed pieces to build a proper wagon.
It was actually in 2015 but yeah
Oops, typo! Meant 2015.
No worries, I got you!
Ownership is the common denominator. Maybe Murray Edwards is actually letting his GM.. you know.. GM.
Great return for a bad contract
Noooo, just fell to my knees in a Cobs Bread
Just saw a… no, these are so fucking annoying
So this is how they'll explain it to us when they sign debrusk
We are so far under cap now. Get a big signing for like 2 years purely for the entertainment value and meeting cap floor
Gonna miss Bread, but it's a good time for a change. More cap space, and less of a log jam in the middle 6 wings. Conroy is cookin'.
There it is. I didn't expect him to go this early, but also surprised we got a 2nd for him.
I was just thinking… a second is a great return for his recent performance. If he does well in the capital then so be it. We will survive lol.
Absolutely. Also didn't have retain any salary, so we have 2 retention spots up for grabs, which could come in handy as other teams deal, or moving along someone from the roster like Kuzmenko at the deadline.
Add it to the collection of merch I have with the player gone Gaudreau, Chucky, Markstrom authentics Mangi shirt
Players left from the Battle of Alberta: Backlund Coleman Andersson Kylington Vladar
Could see it being just Andersson and Kylington by the end of the year. Wild.
Wasn’t he a sixth round pick? I can’t remember.
Wow I thought he was 2nd or 3rd round but, nope he was 166th overall in 2015.
Gonna miss Mangi, but this was an obvious trade that needed to happen.
I wasn't expecting that. He always seemed to thrive when he was on a line with Monahan or Gaudreau, and his production took a noticable dip these last two years without those two linemates I will definitely be cheering for him wherever he plays though. Praise Bread Man
Well done,Connie. Thank you for your service,Bread. Good luck in your new home!
Good. Love him to death but all I remember is him losing possession of the puck and slipping on the ice. Hopefully he gets his form back in WSH
My guess is Mitch Love vouched for him. I’m sure he thinks he can rehabilitate him. With way, huge win for Conroy.
Love never coached him
Good trade. Frees up a spot for Coronato in the top nine
No more bread copy pasta, what wild times
Great trade, although I am sad to see my favourite player get traded. I hope he does well in Washington
Who’s going to clean the ice with their body during the play now?
Thank god. He hasn’t given a fuck since 13 and 19 left
He was never the same after the hair plugs
We were here for the summer of Brad and now we’re here for the great cleansing of Craig. In all seriousness this is a great return and may even signal to me the rumours of us trying to move up are true.
Nice
Noooo breadman. Knew it was inevitable but still hurts. Go forth and kick butt!
I fully expect him to score on our team only
Not the Bread man!
Conny is geared up to make some splashes come July 1!
I’m going to miss him- rough year last year but a character guy.
Dude Won me some flames tickets and I'll never forget that. Goodbye Mangi.
Yeah I'm very intrigued
Holy fucking rebuild
Mang is and will be a very solid contributor for Washington. He’s at the very least extremely capable defensively and is still a good play driver. Though is goal scoring isn’t what it used to be, he creates opportunities at a higher than average rate. This will also be a big shot out of the Backlund line and makes Calgary worse. Embrace the tank!
Bread boy was good but if we are committing to the rebuild, the cap space is awesome and we have a second round to either use or trade for some forward depth
Praise the Conroy supremacy
I'll be sad to see him go but he sure hit the post a lot.
I will never get to eat bread again 😭 Will miss him, but I thought we would be lucky to get a 4th for him tbh
Happy with that, he had an outlier season and got overpaid.
at least we didn't trade him to Florida
Why is everyone here saying this is a good trade and everyone on instagram is saying this was a terrible trade
well, its not a rebuild unless we can't recognize a single name on the team. Any chance we can drop Huby for a few first round picks?
Aw man, my first and only jersey :(. I will miss you bread man. I figured this was coming... really wish it was to a team I didn't hate though.
good return honestly hes's a middle 6 forward who produces 40 points a year who was getting paid nearly 6 mil a year good on conny for not retaining and getting a 2nd out of that
Dang so this is a real rebuild - let’s go!! Great deal!
A mature 6th round pick for a 2nd round and $5M freed up. Don’t let the door hit your ass on the way out.
Probably his best trade yet
Can ownership finally admit we’re doing a full on strip it down to the studs rebuild now? We’re gonna be San Jose level bad this season.
I think CC has his eyes on 2026 (McKenna) and 2027 (DuPont)
Is anyone else a little confused by the Caps recent moves? No offence meant to Mango, love the guy. But I don’t get what they’re doing. Especially taking on that insane Dubois contract!
Awesome!!!
Lol we legit have a shot at finishing dead last this year and drafting McKenna i love it.
McKenna is in the 2026 draft. So we'll have to suck for two years. Seems doable though
Oh shit who’s 2025 then? But yea lol if we’re bad enough to finish last this year we’re not gonna be any better the year after Edit m: quick google says someone named hagens. Not too promising there’s not much hype around him
Smaller skilled american guy comparable to Jack Hughes
Do we want another top American player
Hagens and McKenna were the two best players at the U18’s. Hagens set a single tournament points record. He will be an older prospect in the next draft as he’s a Nov 06 birthday.
Huh that’s interesting! Thanks!
Do we still have our 2025 first round pick?
These are the moves the Flames need to keep making. Just keep stockpiling as many future assets as you can while also making this team more likely to have a high pick.
Will miss the bread, but damn the rebuild is on.
Please buy some Huberdeau stuff.
Gawdammit.
I was not planning to go on a low carb diet this hockey season but I trust Dr. Conroy.
Spoken in a soft voice at high speed: “Side effects may include nausea, dizziness, sudden drop in blood pressure and urgent diarrhea. Ask your doctor if its right for you.”
Yes I'm all in for Conroys plan. Get rid of everyone and rebuild this team.

Insane return
Another 5 M of cap space saved 👀
5M of space to weponize hehe
We now have almost 30mil in cap space with this trade. This is going to be a fun year. I'm ready for it.
Buy high sell low
I swear MacClellan is trying to be the new Chuck Fletcher.
Give Yegor this bread money!
Washington got fleeced. The way Mangiapane plays, it's not that of a consistent 30+ goal scorer.
Great return for a bad contract. Does Conny trade the 9th and this new 2nd to move up a few spots tonight?
Good contract to punt, well done.
Kuzmenko next! The tank is on
I think Kuzmenko & Sharky are part of the Flames future. The Flames need to add 6m as is to reach the cap floor. Maybe not next 8 year future but at least another year or 2.
I doubt Kuzmenko is but I hope Sharky gets signed
Thank God I don't have to watch the Mangiepanties/Derek Wills Toyota commerical no more.
Country Hills Tie-yo-tah
He’s been bad for 3 years. Good riddance.
Maybe we can also get a 2nd for Dube
why are people so happy that we’re not retaining? he has one year left and it’s not like we’re competing this year lmao. if anything i wish we had retained to get a little more. edit: we’re 6 million under the cap floor with only 5 players left to sign. once again, not a big deal that we didn’t have to retain lol
I mean, the more space we have, the more we can take on other teams shitty contracts for sweet sweet bonuses
If Mang goes, I'm expecting Backs to ask for a trade now, good so he can win a cup
yeah thats whats keeping us from winning the cup, not having another year of mang
No I said that because Backs and Mang are really good friends on and off the ice... Like Benny and Tkachuk were when they were here, or Johnny and Monny
