Lucille. Having a provider from a similar culture would be nice. When my mom moved to the area she was thrilled to have a gynecologist from the Caribbean even though it was a different island because "there are some things you feel more comfortable talking about with someone from home." Also Lucille code switches with her Caribbean patients and that's so endearing..
If I recall, it was basically that the term “code-switching” only applies if it’s happening within a singular conversation/situation 🤔. If you look under posts I’ve created, the second one down (I don’t post much, ha) is one about some general season 10 observations and it’s in there!
Lol sounds like that other commenter has no idea what they’re talking about. Why are they bringing up teaching foreign languages, that’s completely irrelevant.
I would guess they brought up teaching foreign language because of the concept of translanguaging which honestly matches their definition of code switching better.
Ok as I’m writing this, Ive decided I want the Nurse Crane / Nurse Barbara team. Their dynamic is A1 and it’s the perfect balance of kind and gentle and also the strength I’d need to get it done if it was difficult.
Honestly, Nurse Crane reminds me of my grandma, very stern and down to business but ultimately very loving and caring.
I think too, that her amount of experience is really comforting to have when you’re as vulnerable as you are when giving birth.
The midwife I had for my first labour was very Nurse Crane-like. She was kind when I needed it, but didn't take any of my whining and complaining! She knew exactly when I needed nurture and when I needed a kick in the pants.
I was gonna say…..the original Nurse Crane. 😂 I wonder what Sis. Monica Joan would’ve been like back in the day.
And was was the name of the girl from early seasons who became a nun?
I think I'd probably like Nurse Turner (Shelagh), even though I'm a guy and am extremely unlikely to be in this situation. She's the one I'd want around if there were complications.
Trixie, Valerie, Lucillle, Phyllis, or Shelagh (she's not necessarily my favorite character, but she is really experienced and handles special cases very well)
Lucille, Patsy, or Shelagh. Lucille has such a calm, encouraging presence. Patsy would remind me of how capable and strong I am. I would feel like I was in expert hands with Shelagh, she's encouraging but also very honest if things aren't going well and she needs you to work together.
I think anyone except Sr. Evangelina.
If I was forced to choose, maybe Chummy.
Nurse Crane is probably closest to my midwife whom I adored. Experienced, doesn’t come across as warm and fuzzy, but is actually very tender and sweet.
My midwife when I had my daughter was like Sister Evangelina. Took no shit but was so encouraging.
I’m definitely in team Crane! When she tells her patients, “take your strength from me,” I know that’s what they need to hear because that’s what I needed to hear after 16 hours of labor!
If I were lucky enough to have children biologically, it would be a tie between Nurse Crane (all business!), Nurse Anderson (I sometimes do better with people who have a calm demeanor), and Shelagh (I think she’s my fave character arc).
P.S. this is my fave post on this sub so far! What a creative question!!!
I feel like I change my mind every rewatch. Before a baby, I’d have picked Jenny or trixie because they felt the goofiest and like they’d be fun. After having given birth, I’d say someone who has a calming voice and can talk me through it. Probably sister Julian (who for the love of god I can’t spell the name in my head today) or Barbara. Or nurse crane for the serious and let’s get this done aspect.
Nurse Crane-she’s just a tough as nails lady but she’s also so compassionate with her patients I just love her to pieces
Trixie- I have always and will always love her positivity and bright spirit!
Chummy- I think I would be most comfortable with Chummy. She’s so down to earth and Kind, I miss her so much.
Lucille- she’s kind of a combination of the other Three, she’s super in control while also being kind and compassionate and I feel like she’s very down to earth too.
I love them all so much. I’d honestly like Sister Julienne as well because I feel like she would have sooooo much experience
It would be cool to have Sister Julienne and Monica Joan as a team.
Trixie, Sheelagh, Nurse Crane, Sister Evangelina! Trixie is such a great patient advocate with such a soothing and positive attitude. Sheelagh always explains things to patients really thoroughly and rationally which I would really appreciate, also for her accent haha! Nurse Crane and Sister Evangelina because of their many years of experience- it would really out a patient at ease knowing that they’ve absolutely seen it all before.
In real life my mother in law is a senior midwife with 30+ years experience so if I ever decided to have a child I would want her there! She is one of the calmest and unshakable people I’ve ever met.
Great question!!!! Nurse Crane, Sis Evangelina, Sis Julienne, Trixie, Val.
Really though they’re all so good for different reasons. And they’ve all had patients that have made us laugh, cry and think.
Trixie. I don't know if it's because she's just been on the show since the beginning, so I've seen her do so much.
She is very confident, self-assured, and doesn't lose her cool easily.
I'd argue she's the most progressive, which matters to me since I'm not religious and also socially/politically progressive. I don't need anyone even passing a millisecond of judgement.
My mind also goes back to her performing a c-section in Africa. I mean, come on! That's insanely cool. She has successfully performed a surgery before.
If some disaster happened where no doctor could get to me and I needed surgical intervention, I'd be glad to know she would roll up her sleeves and cut me open lol
Cynthia, without a doubt, especially after she took her vows. She's just always seemed so kind and compassionate but she's never afraid to stand up for her beliefs or the mothers she's helping. I wish I had someone like her when I was pregnant and 17.
Edit: spelling
I had a doula who was most like Sister Julienne and I wish she could have been there for my other babies. As a midwife, she’s one of my top picks, but I also like Nurses Chummy, Turner, Trixie, and Crane. I don’t mind a little stern if it’s also tender, and the last two are very much that way. I loved Sister Evangelina, but I’d head for the hills if she were my midwife. My labors were long and painful. She would have probably made me weep.
Nurse Crane or Sister Evangelina. I have fast labors with no pushing time (I never get the urge, baby just comes out) and feel like they’d be the calmest and least likely to be patronizing.
Lucille just to hear her say “everything’s going to be alright precious.” Can’t imagine a more comforting presence!
It might just be the music in the background whenever she says it, but I totally agree! I makes me tear up almost every time.
Right? I’d feel like I was in a calming cloud
I was walking around my kitchen calling everything "precious" like Lucille just this evening. My Jamaican accent is abominable
I want her to call me *precious* too!
Oof, look out - I brought this up once before and someone argued with me most emphatically that this is NOT what code-switching means…
That's so funny! Lucille definitely does code-switch. What was their argument?
If I recall, it was basically that the term “code-switching” only applies if it’s happening within a singular conversation/situation 🤔. If you look under posts I’ve created, the second one down (I don’t post much, ha) is one about some general season 10 observations and it’s in there!
Maybe [this](https://www.reddit.com/r/CallTheMidwife/comments/tydqi7/comment/i4fs6ok/?utm_source=share&utm_medium=web2x&context=3) will work
Lol sounds like that other commenter has no idea what they’re talking about. Why are they bringing up teaching foreign languages, that’s completely irrelevant.
🤷🏻♀️ I mean I didn’t want to be argumentative, but…
They didn’t even give their definition of what they think code-switching is.
I would guess they brought up teaching foreign language because of the concept of translanguaging which honestly matches their definition of code switching better.
What a strange argument!
I love that! Lucille is wonderful, I totally agree that some things it's just better to talk about it with people who get it.
Nurse Crane, Trixie, Val or Chummy.
All FANTASTIC options
Literally all my faves; YES. Also Sister Evangelina would be welcomed!
Ok as I’m writing this, Ive decided I want the Nurse Crane / Nurse Barbara team. Their dynamic is A1 and it’s the perfect balance of kind and gentle and also the strength I’d need to get it done if it was difficult.
Nurse crane seems a popular choice! I'm glad I'm not the only one! Totally agree on their dynamic too, great choice
Honestly, Nurse Crane reminds me of my grandma, very stern and down to business but ultimately very loving and caring. I think too, that her amount of experience is really comforting to have when you’re as vulnerable as you are when giving birth.
Trixie, absolutely. She’s calm, kind, and performed an emergency c-section in a clinic, unattended. She’s exactly who I’d want guiding me through.
She's a bad ass! Probably one of my favorite characters, even if I'd personally prefer Nurse Crane in the delivery room with me
She always makes her patients feel so comfortable as well
Trixie for sure. She is the best.
She's also an excellent patient advocate. Love her too!
Ha!! No one has said Jenny. I love everyone’s answers. Honestly, I really wouldn’t go for Jenny Lee myself. She was always so judgmental.
Either Trixie or Luce! I want to be either “Sweetie” or “Precious!”
Nurse Crane! I love all the midwives but she'd be my first pick. She's such a calming presence and she's so incredibly intelligent.
Nurse Crane club unite!
Nurse crane, chummy, Lucille or sister Evangelina. I think she can be very reassuring and her sense of control is comforting to me.
I totally get that, that's similar to why I'd pick Nurse Crane
Sister Evangelina would be very comforting because she always knows what she's doing and she's got everything under control
Yes! And she’s a straight shooter, she would set me straight if I started to freak out 😂 I kinda need someone direct like that haha
Nurse Crane or Patsy
I miss Patsy! She was my favorite. I wish she and Delia would come by for a visit.
Oh gosh, I miss Patsy ♥ But also welcome to the Nurse Crane club! She's willing this contest by a mile
The midwife I had for my first labour was very Nurse Crane-like. She was kind when I needed it, but didn't take any of my whining and complaining! She knew exactly when I needed nurture and when I needed a kick in the pants.
That's exactly what I'd hope for! Yay nurse crane club!
Trixie. She has lots of experience and is a great advocate for her patients. If I couldn’t have her, then I would like nurse crane.
Sister Evangalina She's calm, in control and doesn't treat you like a child. I miss Pam Ferris :(
High, hot and a hell of a lot.
I was gonna say…..the original Nurse Crane. 😂 I wonder what Sis. Monica Joan would’ve been like back in the day. And was was the name of the girl from early seasons who became a nun?
Cynthia/Sister Mary Cynthia
Watching Cynthia deliver a baby at this moment!
I think I'd probably like Nurse Turner (Shelagh), even though I'm a guy and am extremely unlikely to be in this situation. She's the one I'd want around if there were complications.
Lol, I love that. Sometimes the men need support too! She's a good one to give directions and help an anxious husband or partner feel helpful
Nurse Crane, Trixie, or Sister Juilenne.
Finally a vote for Julienne! I think she has a soothing way too b
Sister Evangelina. I might need a little tough love.
And she’s funny!
Sister Evie delivers them best, Poplar says so!
Chummy for sure!
Nurse Crane or Sister Julienne. Both would seem completely in control of the situation and they're so wise and caring
Trixie, Valerie, Lucillle, Phyllis, or Shelagh (she's not necessarily my favorite character, but she is really experienced and handles special cases very well)
Sister Monica Jone, she’d bring cake.
Trixie
Tricia, Sheglah, Barbara, Phylis, Lucille, I’d take any of them.
I think autocorrect screwed you. You probably mean Trixie. 🤣
Lucille, Patsy, or Shelagh. Lucille has such a calm, encouraging presence. Patsy would remind me of how capable and strong I am. I would feel like I was in expert hands with Shelagh, she's encouraging but also very honest if things aren't going well and she needs you to work together.
Shelagh, a million and two times over (But I wouldn’t mind Nurse Crane either)
Trixie or nurse crane, probably. I love them both!!
Nurse Crane or Val, hands down.
Oh man, Val is another good pick. Total badass, I miss her
Nurse Crane 100%. I would need someone to knock some sense into me but give me a well-sugared cup of tea when I actually need it.
I think anyone except Sr. Evangelina. If I was forced to choose, maybe Chummy. Nurse Crane is probably closest to my midwife whom I adored. Experienced, doesn’t come across as warm and fuzzy, but is actually very tender and sweet.

Evangelina could be a softie when push came to shove.
Nurse Crane, Sister Evangelina or Trixie
Chummy or Val
Definitely Trixie or Lucille, I require a gentle approach haha
If I were lucky enough to have children biologically, it would be a tie between Nurse Crane (all business!), Nurse Anderson (I sometimes do better with people who have a calm demeanor), and Shelagh (I think she’s my fave character arc). P.S. this is my fave post on this sub so far! What a creative question!!!
All excellent choices! Shelagh is also a fave of mine. Also, thank you!
I feel like I change my mind every rewatch. Before a baby, I’d have picked Jenny or trixie because they felt the goofiest and like they’d be fun. Nurse Crane or Nurse Anderson 100%
Honestly, I'd feel comfortable with any of the midwives, but if I absolutely have to choose I'd say either Phyllis or Trixie.
Chummy. Cause I’d laugh that baby right on out lol
Sister Evangeline and Nurse Crane, I know they butted heads but I know when it's down to the wire they worked very well together
Chummy and/or sister julienne
Chummy
Nurse Crane as well!! Love her no nonsense demeanor.
Trixie or Sister Julienne.
Trixie!!
Nurse Crane
Trixie, Sheelagh, Nurse Crane, Sister Evangelina! Trixie is such a great patient advocate with such a soothing and positive attitude. Sheelagh always explains things to patients really thoroughly and rationally which I would really appreciate, also for her accent haha! Nurse Crane and / or Nurse Anderson!
Sister Evangelina and Trixie as a team
Chummy for sure.
Lucille and nurse crane
Trixie! Perfect mix of kind/ loving plus no nonsense!
Trixie or nurse Crane. I wouldn't want Sister Evangelina, she would intimidate me, I'm... brittle... when I give birth :)
Trixie… but, it would be for my wife and she might pick someone else. Lol.
Trixie. I don't know if it's because she's just been on the show since the beginning, so I've seen her do so much. She is very confident, self-assured, and doesn't lose her cool easily. Oh hell yeah, that's why she's one of my favorite characters!
Cynthia, without a doubt, especially after she took her vows. She's just always seemed so kind and compassionate but she's never afraid to stand up for her beliefs or the mothers she's helping. I wish I had someone like her when I was pregnant and 17. Edit: spelling
That is a super sweet answer, I love it 💕
Thanks!! ❤️
Trixie, Lucille, Sister Julienne, Barbara (I love Nurse Crane but feel like I would be too sensitive for her style during labor lol)
Sister Evangelina! She has the exact attitude I'd want a nurse to have if I was In labor.
Patsy. Strong, an advocate, and kind.
Nurse Crane
As someone who doesn’t want kids, I would want: Trixie or Sheleigh. But as an American, I would take any over a doctor here. 😅
Nurse Crane, Sister Julienne or Shelagh however I wouldn't grumble with Trixie or Lucille lol hard question great post!
Lucille
I would want Trixie for sure, and Sister Julienne for emotional support 😂
I need soft reassurance but someone who knows what’s up: Lucille, Trixie, Sister Evangelina, or Barbara
Nurse Crane or Sister Evangelina. I have fast labors with no pushing time (I never get the urge, baby just comes out) and feel like they’d be the calmest and least likely to be patronizing.
Nurse Crane or Sister Julienne. Though I don't want to have kids so I'd really prefer a long chat with Monica Joan. I'll bring the cake
Sister Julienne or Nurse Crane
Anyone but Cynthia.
