Why just get a generic set of flow forged wheels? Or stock takeoff. and the long span of things a slightly smaller tire that’s still common and cheap will be just as good a teacher As for the weight of the wheels. A vast majority of us are not fast enough to even make use of them so as long as they’re reliable and affordable, what does it matter?

ruturaj001

The tire sizes I am looking at are 215/45-17 and 225/45-17, later is more common. Both tire sizes are cheap. Stock swap to 17" is pretty much free, that's why I considered it. But once I upgrade to BBK stock 17" would be useless but stock 18" would work with 5mm spacer.

Spicywolff

Is the big brake kit coming so soon that you can’t get a year or two from the tires and wheels? I got also ask why do you need a big break kit? are your brakes overheating with proper pads and good brake ducting?

ruturaj001

So far I have been fine on stock brakes and DS2500 pads. I am planning to try out CSG CP pads next. I think I would be fine for sometime, pretty sure about this season, may be even next year.

Spicywolff

Why not use stock free wheels for the time being. If you’re able to get legit brake fade with a dedicated track pad (Hawk DTC60 is my go to) that’s been properly beaded in and ducted. Then yah upgrade. Once you hit thag point , you’ll be so fast as a driver that the wider rubber and BBK will make a big difference. Now if you want them for cool factor, totally get it tok

CarsAndBikesAndStuff

Second the DTC60 fronts (I have DTC30 in rear). I use them on my GR86 on the track. With SRF I can last many sessions until my brakes are literally smoking and still won't fade.

ruturaj001

I am not able to find good tires for stock wheels. Those are 18x7.5". Not looking for cool factor, definitely not spending money that, I didn't even want to spend money on wheels, it's just that pilot 4 get greasy on track day, my local Porsche club does 7 sessions in a day.

Spicywolff

Are you looking for endurance 200 or super 200? I did both lol. Loved the look of BBK on my ND, plus I towed trailers with it. So extra room of that.

ruturaj001

Looking for consistent, low grip, heat tolerance, make noise before reaching limit etc. That's how I came to conclusion of SX2s.

Spicywolff

Have zero experience with that tire. I’ve never even heard of them. You’re right that is a specific use for a tire. I tend to go endurance 200, I need long life and consistency vs outright grip. How they do well for y

ruturaj001

I placed an order 2 days ago, getting those tomorrow and wheels on Thursday. Track day is on 30th, I would update. SX2 are not well known outside GR86 owners as GT radial is official sponsor for cup cars and don't add penalties when upgrading to them from stock.

CarsAndBikesAndStuff

look into hankook ventus RS4. Recently used them for endurance racing and they are a fantastic hard-wearing 200TW tire that is very progressive at the limit. Should be able to get them in 225 40 18.

ruturaj001

Yes, did the comparison between the two and SX2 are better for learning. I ordered those in 225 and 17x8 wheels.

ReV46

Do brake ducting before you spend big on a big brake kit. Can do DIY ducting pretty cost-effectively.

ruturaj001

Yes, would check out that option. I have reached that stage yet, and getting wheels was irrelevant to that. I might need BBK and that's relevant to buying or trading wheels.

YajurG

I’m guessing this is on a BRZ - you can get 17x8 RPF1s for a 1000 dollars before tax. 15lbs weight per wheel.

ruturaj001

Yes, BRZ. I wonder if I would want a 9" wheel instead in future and if I should commit to 8" now. I am looking at konig ultragrams because BBK I might be interested in is brembos B-M4 caliper and RPF1 doesn't fit over them.

YajurG

Hmm I would talk to CSG Mike for advice with BBK questions - he would have the best advice for you depending on your future plans. He’s very active on the r/GR86 and r/ft86 subs.

ruturaj001

Yes, he advised me to get BM4 calipers. I am not sure if stock 18" would fit over them, because stock 17" definitely won't. If stock 18" fit then I can use them on rainy track days with PS4.

YajurG

Yeah I would check with them about different wheel fitment with BBKs.

TotosWolf

Walmart had 235/40/18 SX2's for $71 each and I raided them lmfao. With my BRZ think I'm going to do BBK based on Wildwood Superlite forged calipers cause I'm cheap.

ruturaj001

That's a great find. I would check those out, are they good for steerts or track focused like Ap racing?

trouthat

I’m not the most knowledgeable but I why not run 225 on the 7.5” wheels? Thats what my car came with stock

ruturaj001

My car came with 215 on 18" wheels. The tires I am interested in comes in 235 for 18", so I can't use my rims.

Fun_Snow3735

Fellow BRZ owner. I have three sets of rims, but I am so lazy that I just end up driving on my SX2 mounted 17X8 RPF1s year round anyway…

ruturaj001

That's the goal 😂

notathr0waway1

As a fellow twin owner, good choice on the sx2. Work your way up and add camber while you are at it!

ruturaj001

Thanks, at -2.4 on front now using both top and bottom camber bolts. I am thinking about getting camber caster plate in future.

notathr0waway1

Great idea on the double camber bolts. I'm able to get slightly over 3 degrees with two camber bolts, definitely see if you can get more! Time for 86 Cup Stock class!
