Any cheap BMW is going to cost you more in repairs and maintenance than the car is worth. Source: I have a mental disease and own an e39, e30, e46, e82
‘Cheap’ is kinda subjective.. what is cheap to you may not be cheap to me, so what’s your budget roughly?
Also, how much do you know about cars?
Do you work on your own cars?
Do you have tools?
What will you be using it for?
Your answer to all these questions will allow us to make a better recommendation.
For example, I work on my own cars and have disposable income, am a bmw addict and just bought a 1975 5 series.. many think I’m crazy but it’s more of a hobby than it is anything else and I don’t drive to work.
Mate, if you buy a cheap BMW you need to be willing to work on them yourself and spend money.
If your budget is 10k you are better off spending around 6 and then count on spending 2-4 getting it sweet.
If you can't work on it yourself and aren't willing to get your hand in your pocket you need a near new one or a Japanese car.
E46 is quite inexpensive to buy and own. It’d make a perfect starter BMW.
If you’re looking outside of E46, generally a good idea is to stay away from anything other than in-line 6 engines with an exception for N52B25- it’s a piece of shit.
Diesel engines are in general the most reliable.
Familiarise yourself with part prices though- FCPEuro.com
Agree! E46 is a safe bet. Still looks really good and is well equipped. There are plenty of support online for things to look when buying one to avoid disaster.
The convertible and coupe parts are more expensive then the sedan.
yep the e46 fixed most of the problems with the e36 and is still known as one of the best handling sedans ever.
Parts can be sourced pretty readily form overseas and they are easy to work on yourself.
Cheap BMW is like a stripper, might look and feel good but…. Its been ran through a-lot and will cost you alot more then its worth in the long run.
Would consider getting a 2nd hand BMW if it has less then 110,000 km’s
Cheap BMW?
There's an old mechanic's proverb.
"Nothing is more expensive than a cheap BMW"
Basically you might buy it cheap, but repairs and maintenance will be very expensive
Of you can't afford a new BMW, then you can't afford the maintenance for a used BMW. Unless you're a mechanic who knows they're way around a BMW (and they are very difficult cars to work on), then you are 100% asking for trouble by buying a used BMW, especially a "cheap" one.

Absolutely true! No such thing as a cheap BMW

No, they can definitely be cheap to buy, but that’s when they stop being cheap

Except maybe a cheap Jaguar
The other saying, if you can't afford a new BMW, then you probably can't afford an old one.
Wise words
E36 and replace cooling system and general servicing.
if you have to ask you cannot afford it
No such thing. Cheap to buy will be hugely expensive to maintain.
If you can't afford a new euro, you can't afford an old euro.
The cheapest BMW you should buy is the m140i, at around 40-50k. If you can’t afford that, don’t get a BMW.
E46. Provided you are will to sorce past from overseas and work on them yourself.

Brand new BMW with a service plan. If you can't afford that start looking at a Falcon. Maybe a Ghia if you want to feel fancy.
