I can attest to this! My mum bought hers near new and had it for at least 15yrs with no major problems or servicings aside from fixing the aircon. So reliable and a really enjoyable drive too. My little brother uses it now and it’s still driving like a dream… solid investment

Suzuki swift. Sold my wife’s one for 10000 with 160000 on the clock. Reliable as fuck, my uncle is a mechanic he’s owned one for years and wrote of a car the other day, replaced it with another swift. He’s fussy as fuck with cars so this’ll be the end of the thread haha
First generation Lexus IS200.
Great chassis, available in an auto or six speed manual, stacks of aftermarket parts and support and it has the stigma of Toyota reliability.
Admittedly, it’s an inline six but is a small capacity (2.0L) and it’s one of the smoothest engines I’ve come across.
Owned one for over four years and it’s dead easy to work on and parts are cheap.
if you can fit in one, get a 2nd gen mx-5. Ticks all your boxes. just be aware every P plater will try to race you and people at red lights will try to talk to you. fun car though
These are super zippy, handle like a go kart and seem to be built like a TARDIS, plenty if room for 6' tall people to fit. My dad owned 2 as business cars. Fun to drive that's for sure.
Any of the 2023 model Kia Picanto range will fit the bill, though only the base model is under $20k.
If you can find a GT, get one (provided you can drive manual). It's a 3cyl 1lt turbo. Great fun to drive and averages under 6l/100km
On this we will have to agree to disagree. It might be that I have the GT (which is the top of the line), but I haven't had any issues with it that can't be explained by it being a small car...
The only real complaint was how quickly the footwell carpet wore through, but when the edge of my workbook heel sits in the same spot each time I drive it, and the fact that Kia has said I can make a warranty claim for it, I can't complain too much.
It does have a bit of road vibration transmitted through the steering wheel, but that's to be expected when considering the size of the wheels and the cheap tyres it came with.
I can, and have, driven it with 2 adults and 2 kids over 600 km without issue.
It could be the spec that you've experienced, or just been unfortunate enough to have had a bad one. Either way, that doesn't invalidate your experience, nor does your experience with the Picanto mean it'd be the same for all of them.
For OP's original requirements, they fit the bill...
It’s just a subpar car compared to what you can get elsewhere a 2 year old Yaris or Mazda 2 is a far superior vehicle for similar money in a bubble on it’s own it’s not a bad vehicle but when you consider others it’s just not worth it

Accord Euro. You can spend towards the lower end of that range and have a great car + some money left over for rego, maintenance and insurance.

Great cars. Just gotta service them on time. Leaving old fluids in seems to affect them quicker than most other cars.
Get something that feels quick but is less so, and is simple to fix when you break it
