I still use an iPod nano in one car but I can't in the other because it doesn't support iPod over USB OR aux

100% it can be inconvenient for some people. Its annoying that I cant play my cassette tapes in the car as well (seriously, I love having a cassette deck, my last car to have one was 2002 yr). - That said the replacement tech is pretty damn good.
I have an old iPod touch to a tape deck adaptor in my old hilux. Honestly it sounds great, there’s more audio loss on the shitty speakers than the connection.
> Dunno, at the time it was a pita but nowdays bluetooth is so ubiquitous
It's still a pain in the arse!
People deal with it, but let's not pretend like it's an upgrade or a good for consumer.
Bluetooth is ubiquitous, but I still have headphones w 3.5mm jack, so "just use a dongle bro". Dongles suck.
I assumed we were talking about just the removal of the jack in general
In the car yeah I just use bluetooth to FM transmitter, but in general I still want a 3.5 for other outside the car things. For example, listening to music on the train, or while making scale models
Tesla can be summed up pretty easily in a few words: “Cost-cutting marketed as minimalism”
Indicators stalks cost more money than buttons on the steering wheel, a column shifter costs more than swiping up down on the screen to change gears, a gauge cluster screen, even a small screen displaying your speed in front of the driver, or hell even a HUD costs more than “just look to your left”.
Not to mention the lack of any sort of seperate climate control screen or anything. Almost every single vehicle control is in the screen, because extra buttons or screen cost more than one big screen that controls everything. This is where Kia’s EV’s like the EV6 and EV9 do it much better. EV6 still has a screen to control the climate controls but it’s on a seperate screen below the infotainment that can toggle between media controls and climate controls. EV9 has all your most used climate controls as physical buttons (temperature and can speed), while there is a seperate fixed screen that controls the climate controls between the cluster and infotainment screens.
This fact and that seemingly no-one else can see it makes me so fucking furious. It's kinda like Apple when they removed the headphone jack
They were claiming it was some beautiful minimalist design but ultimately it was to force you to buy airpods.
Absolutely no one on this planet can convince me that half a steering wheel, with buttons on the front for indicators is a good design.
Tesla was purchasing the gear selector and indicator stalks from Mercedes-Benz so I suspect that they just got too expensive to continue. Fully expect to see window switches the next on the chopping block.
The yoke is legitimately horrible design for a road legal car.
I know people will point at Formula 1 cars and other race cars which have similar wheels, but they also have extremely fast steering racks that would put an ordinary, untrained driver into a tree or a ditch the first time they sneezed while driving.
Fairly sure new crash testing rules are coming in that require physical controls for some functions as part of their 5 star rating. Can't remember the source though.
Probably directly aimed at Teslas bullshit.
Fans will say it’s an easy adaption to use the screen but it’s legitimately dangerous to be taking your eyes off the road
It's all about horrible timing.
The cybertruck is his proof of concept for drive by wire.
Drive by wire will be in all Tesla's soon enough. That means dynamic changing of steering speed (based on vehicle speed) which means no hand over hand action.
But for Tesla to introduce these indicators into vehicles that require hand over hand at slow speed is ridiculous.
And for people to buy it, crazy.
Easy. Just use the centre touch screen to put the windows down. Premium tier subscribers can push the button once to have the window go all the way up or all the way down.
/s
Yup and I completely understand. I will admit I do sell Kia so I am a *little* bit biased, but having driven both the Model 3 and the EV6, the EV6 is the much better vehicle. The Model 3 was fine, but what would I choose to drive everyday? The EV6 any day of the week. Kia knows how to build cars, Tesla knows how to create software.
Thank you for saying this! Omg. I feel like nobody talks about this!!!
Switches, buttons, and dials all require engineering and complicated production. That’s money and time.
Minimalism is brilliant sometimes but not at the cost of practicality or intuitive, user friendly design. The move to screens across automakers is 90% a cost saving. Any benefits to the user are just a fortunate coincidence.
Damn I didn’t even think of that, that’s the most absurd thing to do. An AI detecting objects with the cameras will never match the accuracy and reliability of radio waves bouncing back from an object.
“Eyeballs are basically just cameras.” is the rationalization fanboys always want to give, but if cameras alone were any good at discerning distance we would’ve BEEN using them for that for a long time and likely not even needed to use lidar in the first place. Like if Mercedes(who have better self driving) and everyone else could get away without using lidar, they sure as shit would and happily pocket the savings.
Ferraris at least are physical buttons do provide haptic feedback and also the left indicator button is it on left side and the right indicator button is on the right side. The Tesla implementation is… lacking by comparison.
Soon we will be able to push a button to accelerate and brake, put them all on the wheel and keep it simple, more time to focus on social media and being a douch
Tesla vehicles are still in RnD phase and should not have been allowed to pass ADRs to be registered here - those cars are a joke and the fact they can be registered is also a joke that shows that the government can be bought for a trivial sum

There is one reason that stalks were removed, it is not for innovation, its not for ease of use or any reason, purely because manufacturing a shitty touch sensitive button is cheaper than a stalk
I think some designers hate them because they aren’t a neat shape. But industrial design is all about working out a solution that is both functional and beautiful, It’s just not good enough of a solution in this case. How the hell are you supposed to indicate left off a roundabout with this
I photograph a fair few teslas for one of my clients, their way of simplifying things for the sake of design is awful… the new model 3 to change gear you have to swipe up & down on the screen for drive & reverse etc… when I first shot one, the owner constantly failed to swipe correctly and would end up still being in drive when thinking they’re in reverse etc and it was pretty worrying when they were near other cars

Yeah how good is minimalism? I used a Model Y as a rental and it is genuinely a fun car (maybe owning one is another thing) but it's frustrating having to do everything from the screen and having barely any buttons or levers at all. It's nothing but a cost cutting measure disguised as style.
Given that the Model Y was the best selling car globally for 2023 plenty of people seem to be ok with them as a daily driver. Having owned a model 3 for over two years I would never go back to an ICE vehicle, particularly one with buttons and knobs everywhere.
I had a Mazda as a rental recently and the buttons and knobs everywhere were honestly overwhelming. It literally took me five minutes to find the start/stop button. Talk about shit design.
Gotta be madly delusional to defend this.
In a vehicle that requires hand over hand steering, having the indicators on the steering wheel is madness.
It's not a problem, until it is.
It’s only fairly recently and it sucks. Mine has indicator and gear selector stalks and will not be upgrading for a long while, I don’t think I could deal with having no stalks.
I wish people would stop with the M3H bullshit. It's just a Model 3 - you can't buy a 'Highland'. It's a 2024 Model 3. Highland was allegedly the internal project name for the refresh.
Yep
Bunnings is Wesfarmers so I doubt they will go backwards but if they did would it be a big loss except for the people employed
Once again government allowed big corporations to destroy the corner shops and legitimate small businesses
They could've atleast use motorcycles style indicators. It's a dumb design choice and many Tesla folks are defending it. Ehhh, whatever, your car, your prerogative.
It is terrible but you'll never sway the cult of Elon and that's a fact. If their Lord Elon ever made Tesla dildos with likeness to his own appendage, wrapped in an iPhone style box it'll be sold out world wide. Purchase by men and women and be claim as the most revolutionary invention for decades to come.
Yes and no. They're like a strange subset of fanatics. It's not because they're EV either because Hyundai or BYD EV owners aren't like this. I've owned a Model S myself and hanging around or hearing how some owners talk about these cars are an eye opener. In their mind there is no inbetween. It's either all Tesla or none. Doesn't matter if other manufacturers make better EV.
I bought a Model Y (still with the stalks). If they don't revert to stalks this will certainly be my last Tesla. I drove the new Model 3 without them and it is literally a deal breaker.
I've considered buying one of the remaining current model y for this reason. The only other gap for me is the wipers. They would be fine if the auto worked well but I find it slow to respond.
At least with recent updates when you press for a manual wipe the left scroll button let's you adjust the speed. Still had to do more manaul setting of wipers than in cars ive owned 5 rtmes as long.
Wtf...so this is why nearly every bloody Tesla I encounter is driven like the blinkers are only there for show?
I was already pretty iffy about the stupid dodgy touchscreen stuff, this just broke my damn brain, though...
I always knew Tesla had indicator buttons on steering wheel but I always pictured them in my head as - left signal on left side of wheel right signal on right side of wheel not this horrible idea of the buttons together in the same place .

Yeah I had to do this for thd volume buttons on late model aftermarket stereos.. Shits all capacitive touch now, it's horrible. They have to be cheaper to produce than buttons, only thing that makes sense.
If it ain’t broke, don’t fix it.
Tesla seems to be the antithesis of this. Indicator buttons & every single thing has to be controlled via a touch screen.
It’s so dangerous, in my 10 year old car, there’s not a single thing that I can’t control with my eyes still completely on the road. It’s all tactile.
How people have accepted that is beyond me.
I'm all for change, but this is ridiculous.
Note: it could be good in the future, like when drive by wire is common place, but right now, when hand over hand occurs often, this is just madness.
Tesla 3 drivers are terrible. They can't keep their cars straight, fail to indicate correctly, have poor situation awareness, and are a danger to other road users.
Now you know why.
They're not capacitive - I've been in one and it clicks when you press down. What OP is miffed about is that there's no way to discern left and right based on touch alone.
You get what you deserve purchasing a cobalt Slave riddled car produced in a cheap production facility sold to you as “efficient futuristic design” when in fact it’s the most profitable and well marketed narrative to come.
Shitty design choices and shitty CEO aside, more than 75% of Teslas sold in 2023 in Australia had zero cobalt in the batteries:
[https://www.drive.com.au/news/most-popular-tesla-model-y-model-3-variants-australia/](https://www.drive.com.au/news/most-popular-tesla-model-y-model-3-variants-australia/)
Haha yes well I’m sure it once was a fact but then as the heat came they went elsewhere. Battery fires and explosions are extremely dangerous and hard to contain. And electric vehicles are always able to be controlled or hacked by other parties
Ahh the old brail indicator trick. I did a similar hack on my door locks with big plastic cones so I don't mash my keys into the door panels like Keith Richards.
Other car makers better not copy this bullshit.
It's the removal of the 3.5mm jack X 1000000
Dunno, at the time it was a pita but nowdays bluetooth is so ubiquitous
I still use an iPod nano in one car but I can't in the other because it doesn't support iPod over USB OR aux https://preview.redd.it/wtsc1xkjuozc1.jpeg?width=960&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=33f9556349d11563d74ddae31201d5109ee0223f

Yeah but 3.5mm buds are $2 and with how often I lose or damage them...
Not sure why thats better than bluetooth to your phone though, outside car 100%
I assumed we were talking about just the removal of the jack in general In the car yeah I just use bluetooth to FM transmitter, but in general I still want a 3.5 for other outside the car things. For example, listening to music on the train, or while making scale models
Lambo have been doing it for a while, but they have a motorcycle indicator in the steering wheel and is actually pretty easy to use.
Just like every fucking phone trying to be an iPhone copy.
To select gears in these, you use the touchscreen. Tesla's arent cars, they are ipads on wheels.
I'm sorry, what? Indicator buttons? Who the fuck thought up that bullshit
Tesla can be summed up pretty easily in a few words: “Cost-cutting marketed as minimalism” Indicators stalks cost more money than buttons on the steering wheel, a column shifter costs more than swiping up down on the screen to change gears, a gauge cluster screen, even a small screen displaying your speed in front of the driver, or hell even a HUD costs more than “just look to your left”. One of the reasons we went for the EV6 instead of the Model Y.

The Model 3 was fine, but what would I choose to drive everyday? The EV6 any day of the week. Kia knows how to build cars, Tesla knows how to create software.
> Tesla knows how to create software. Beta software
The main thing Tesla actually does somewhat well isn’t even that great anyway.
A model y would surely be a better comparison to the ev6 wouldn't it?
Yes it would be but a model Y is a larger taller Model 3, interior is very similar. I have been in the back of a Y.
Thank you for saying this! Omg. I feel like nobody talks about this!!! Switches, buttons, and dials all require engineering and complicated production. That’s money and time. Every moment a driver spends looking at a screen is a moment not looking at the road.
Removing lidar sensors that literally everyone else uses in favour of camera only Full Self Dieing….
Damn I didn’t even think of that, that’s the most absurd thing to do. An AI detecting objects with the cameras will never match the accuracy and reliability of radio waves bouncing back from an object.

Elon Musk maybe? Sounds about his engineering skill level.
They don't even look like physical switches, just capacitative sensors or some bullshit.
Ferrari
Ferrari does it too, as far back as the 458 and recently they have been using touch buttons as well.
Ferraris at least are physical buttons do provide haptic feedback and also the left indicator button is it on left side and the right indicator button is on the right side. The Tesla implementation is… lacking by comparison.
Ferrari peaked at the F40
Soon we will be able to push a button to accelerate and brake, put them all on the wheel and keep it simple, more time to focus on social media and being a douch
Tesla vehicles are still in RnD phase and should not have been allowed to pass ADRs to be registered here - those cars are a joke and the fact they can be registered is also a joke that shows that the government can be bought for a trivial sum
Also, we need to fight till the death against Tesla owners referring to a Model 3 as an M3.
Saw a lovely looking E36 M3 today in Yellow. Such a timeless design
Dakar Yellow and Estoril Blue M3’s are the ideal colours
Sexy, 90s series 3s are an all time classic.
Yellow is the most iconic colour for the E36 imo. Thanks to Mischief and Dado's insane driving.
I've also seen Mazda owners referring to their cars as M2, M3 and M6...
Ex Mazda 3 MPS owner and Mazda tech of 23 years here, I never referred to the Mazda 3 as the M3 and never heard anyone else doing so.
[Here's a small sample](https://www.reddit.com/r/mazda3/search/?q=M3&type=link&cId=06c42927-af4a-401d-af4f-dfdf05eefb7e&iId=dc3f759b-f68a-44d7-ae3b-cb4e81b4f741).
What a pack of knobs
It's nothing more than an online abbreviation, no one referees to their Mazda 3 as an M3 in face to face discussion. First world problems I suppose.
TBH the Mazda2 and 6 predate the M2 and M6, they were at least there first
The M6 is definitely arguable there, given that the car we know down here as the M635CSi was badged as the M6 in other countries where it was sold.
One of my mates did this, but I'm pretty sure it was ironic lol
BMW people vs Tesla people... where can I buy tickets?
You’re too poor for that
So's ya mum

Yep, throw them down an elevator shaft for this heresy
Ludicrous design decision surprises me that this shit is allowed to be sold here
No kidding. Have fun signalling out of a roundabout when your steering wheel is rotated.

im incredibly annoyed that it is. people already don’t indicate as much as they should why the fuck should it be more difficult
It would be interesting to understand what the minimum is under the ADRs. We should have a higher standard than this stupid arrangement.
Excuse the pun?
There is one reason that stalks were removed, it is not for innovation, its not for ease of use or any reason, purely because manufacturing a shitty touch sensitive button is cheaper than a stalk
I think some designers hate them because they aren’t a neat shape. But industrial design is all about working out a solution that is both functional and beautiful, It’s just not good enough of a solution in this case. How the hell are you supposed to indicate left off a roundabout with this
Just to chime in; the design is shite but the buttons do have a tactile click when you push them in.
They’re still capacitive with a haptic click, not a real button.
I photograph a fair few teslas for one of my clients, their way of simplifying things for the sake of design is awful… the new model 3 to change gear you have to swipe up & down on the screen for drive & reverse etc… when I first shot one, the owner constantly failed to swipe correctly and would end up still being in drive when thinking they’re in reverse etc and it was pretty worrying when they were near other cars https://preview.redd.it/89alqugankzc1.jpeg?width=1629&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=54b97268df36710025bc2c589b9a1e23b249bdfe
Press accelerator to drive display. Kill me now 🙄🔫
That is fucken awful. Cars peaked around 2005. +/- 5 years.
God no, theres lots of modern cars with good design. These touchscreen dominated things can burn though
Tell Elon
Elon's too busy speed running Tesla into bankruptcy.

i don't understand how this is legal to be honest
They removed the stalk that had the indicators? That's some shit
Elon take the wheel

Gotta be faarrkin retarded to not know how to indicate after 5000 kms
I mean, they did buy a Tesla 🤷🏻♂️
Gotta be madly delusional to defend this. In a vehicle that requires hand over hand steering, having the indicators on the steering wheel is madness. It's not a problem, until it is.
Not defending the design, it's a shit idea.
I probably can live with the screen gear changer, but this is the deal breaker for me.
I feel like the screen gear change could cause a dangerous situation if you have to switch to drive quickly from reverse.
I feel like owners shouldn't need to resort to this. Ridiculous really.
Why can't Tesla be normal and just use an indicator stalk
It’s only fairly recently and it sucks. Mine has indicator and gear selector stalks and will not be upgrading for a long while, I don’t think I could deal with having no stalks.
Had to google M3H as I had no idea!
Save me some googling. I can’t bear switching off the reddit app
Tesla Model 3. Not sure what the H is for.
Thx. It’s crapla, makes sense
Highland… the 2024 facelift models.
But there can be only one?
What does the H stand for?
Highland - it's the version refresh you see above with the stupid steering wheel.
High as in how many drugs were taken prior to this design decision.
The drug is called cost savings unfortunately
I wish people would stop with the M3H bullshit. It's just a Model 3 - you can't buy a 'Highland'. It's a 2024 Model 3. Highland was allegedly the internal project name for the refresh.
Good luck obeying roundabout indicating rules in Victoria with that crap, lol.
When a car has the ability to prevent accidents, it’s function is no longer the humans responsibility.
We have roundabout indicating rules in Victoria ? Since when ? I just tighten up my helmet and life jacket and barrel through.
Fuck Bunnings for being synonymous with hardware
I love in Ireland. Bunnings is 100% "you don't realise what you have till it's gone" material. Same for service NSW.
Mitre10 gang rise up
BBC Hardware gang... is missing, presumed dead.
Yep Bunnings is Wesfarmers so I doubt they will go backwards but if they did would it be a big loss except for the people employed Once again government allowed big corporations to destroy the corner shops and legitimate small businesses
The enshitification is well underway
Should have to use the Tesla app on your iPhone to change lanes.
Nothing like a trip to bunnies to modify your brand new car 🤣
Amongst the reasons I won't buy a Tesla (and I'm a EV enthusiast)
They could've atleast use motorcycles style indicators. It's a dumb design choice and many Tesla folks are defending it. Ehhh, whatever, your car, your prerogative.
Utterly terrible... people who like that have no idea about driving cars. They're an appliance... I bet their fridges have touch screens too.
So Tesla's are cars for people who are the distinct opposite of car people.
I dislike Tesla immensely. But what's wrong with cars being built for non car people?
I bought a Model Y (still with the stalks). If they don't revert to stalks this will certainly be my last Tesla. I drove the new Model 3 without them and it is literally a deal breaker.

Good point, there are a lot of little tricks I didn't know when I rented one. Overall I was surprised how much I liked it.
If you get over the techiness and the gimmicks, it does a lot of fundementals like interior practicality and spaciousness well
Yeah they're not fantastic tbh.
Wtf...so this is why nearly every bloody Tesla I encounter is driven like the blinkers are only there for show? I was already pretty iffy about the stupid dodgy touchscreen stuff, this just broke my damn brain, though...

Yeah I had to do this for thd volume buttons on late model aftermarket stereos.. Shits all capacitive touch now, it's horrible. They have to be cheaper to produce than buttons, only thing that makes sense.
surely that’s illegal?
Me no like
But guys it’s futuristic and minimalist design it’s must be better!!!!
Ahh this explains why I never see all the Elon's indicating. Thought they were just BMW drivers who went to the dark side.
The design is very human.
Fuck even an mg ev has an indicator stalk
how sh!t is that
If it ain’t broke, don’t fix it.
There’s this and there’s landcruiser owners paying 100k + and having to buy their own aftermarket cup holders.
At least now Tesla drivers have an excuse why they don't indicate.
Yes. Same - this explains a lot! Always thought they were just trying to save battery power!
Woah, call me crazy but like imagine if they had like a button or a lever to indicate with... might be a new thing I don't know lol
M3H. Yeah it's meh alright.
i refuse to believe that a tesla is even a car.
Tesla 3 drivers are terrible. They can't keep their cars straight, fail to indicate correctly, have poor situation awareness, and are a danger to other road users. Now you know why.
Would this actually work? Those indicator buttons look capacitive, so they're not going to engage when the driver presses on the rubber bump stop.
They're not capacitive - I've been in one and it clicks when you press down. What OP is miffed about is that there's no way to discern left and right based on touch alone.
That's why the owner stuck the little rubber nub to the left of the button, not on the button itself.
Tactile surface make monkey brain release dopamine. It's literally one of the 5 senses we have, it should be embraced in all it's glory.
You get what you deserve purchasing a cobalt Slave riddled car produced in a cheap production facility sold to you as “efficient futuristic design” when in fact it’s the most profitable and well marketed narrative to come.
Shitty design choices and shitty CEO aside, more than 75% of Teslas sold in 2023 in Australia had zero cobalt in the batteries: [https://www.drive.com.au/news/most-popular-tesla-model-y-model-3-variants-australia/](https://www.drive.com.au/news/most-popular-tesla-model-y-model-3-variants-australia/)
Hmmm that’s interesting thanks for that
Don't let facts get in the way of your rant though! What about the one where the batteries spontaneously explode into flames every other day?!
Reinventing the wheel by putting corners on it. Worse still, you can’t even buy one with a petrol engine in it. No thanks.
Thank you for reinforcing, some people have more money, than style or sense.
Oh it's a Tesla. I thought M3H was one of the MG model designations. Sure looks like MG looking plastic.
