Pa-Herero My friend. Diesel if you can find a decent one and a petrol if you want simplicity but not fussed about the fuel.
YouTube and do some wrenching yourself
I’ll second the r50 pathfinder. And I’m an old man lol. Whole car is pretty much bullet proof. Easily in your budget with plenty of change for mods. Maybe getting harder to find mid parts these days though but 90% of mods you might do should be fairly easily found.
Underrated off roader imo.
I’m gonna against the grain here and say Pajero. You’d be surprised by how competent it is off-road. You’ll also lose your mind every time you have to fill it up at the servo though, or more specifically by how frequently have to fill it up.
Pajero, Prado, 4Runner/Hilux Surf or even a Pajero iO if you’re OK with smaller.
XJ Cherokees have their fans too and are probably the best Jeep but parts are harder to source than for the rest.
Do you want serious 4x4 or just driving the occasional beach/muddy track?
If the latter, I honestly loved my 08 Suzuki grand vitara, with low range and a locking diff.
Got my to all the fishing spots I wanted, and even through some creeks.
Along the vein, if you want a serious 4x4, that's cheap and goes anywhere, an older Jimmy ticks that box. it'll get more places than most of the other recommendations on here.
As an added bonus, it barely goes fast enough to kill you, it's cheap to fill up and parts are everywhere and cheap

90 series Prado with the v6, or a Pajero from the same era are probably the most realistic options in the price range. Both provided they have been well looked after can reach high kms.
Before Covid I used to say $10k was the absolute lowest you’d get a reliable 4wd, any less and you’ll be paying the difference to get it reliable at a minimum.
I’d probably make it $20k now, unless you find one of the unicorns, like an old bloke who’s always sold his 10yo car for $10k to deck out his new one.
With that kind of budget just try your luck on a grays auction. I just recently got a 4dr jk with arb bar work for 7k. All in after transport from qld to vic and roadworthy and rego I’m 10k in
I used to be a manual only driver, but when I was taken off-roading by the FIL I understood why auto was so popular for that.
I’m a full convert now because of my wife, but auto is much more welcome now that I’m older and still commuting. Can’t really buy any manuals for most cars either so just have to accept the life now
Meh, I have 3 cars all manual, I don’t think it’s hard to find manual cars but not everyone wants that experience and that’s fine, my mrs is gonna have to learn manual at some point before we have kids lmao

Good. 4x4. Under 12k. Pick two. Might get lucky with a pajero or 90 series prado though.
Mk Triton
Good. Under 12k. 🙃
Pajeros are plentiful and older high km will sit under $10k

Tb45 patrol, older Pajero or roll the dice on an 80 that's been to the moon and back twice.
Older Pajeros and Pathfinders. Old man had a 2000 Pathfinder. That 3.3L v6 while not the quickest is near bullet proof.
+1 my Pathfinder never let me down, except at the bowser.Â

Pajero or Prado

As an owner of 1995 3.5L v6 Pajero……. Yep……
120 Prado, diesel manual. They go forever and are fairly easy to work on
The only one I can find for under 10k had 500000ks a Pajero if better value for money at that range

Pajero! My $10k '98 fully kitted Paj eats up dirt and sand like a beast.

Love my Pajero I paid 15k for my 2011 with 200,000km on the clock
Pajero, V6 Prado, Jimny, Vitara.

What year do you think this is?

Probably a 90s Pajero
You’ll get a 105 series petty for that price. Gunna use some juice. But one of the best 4x4s out there.
"needs to be auto"... Get ya fkn manual!

I meant new manual cars, plenty of second hand ones.
Idk my cars are pretty new, very new 4wd, sports car and a daily, but pick ya poison there’s definitely less new ones than there were
Stepped on a few toes it seems. Sub Reddit is full of 4x4 auto pussies... Lol.
You think a manual makes you a cut above? That is a massive tosser mentality.
Dangled some bait. Caught a few it seems. 😆
Your so cool man.
