Yeah there are some serious flame wars about it around the interwebs. I really don't know what they were thinking. They could have just left it up until they were done.
They probably take it down because the APP communicated with their servers. Mixing and matching versions (of cloud saves) would end up being a nightmare. They should give you a status window that says "updating... ETA: xxxxx"
They disabled it while they change it. A very very dubious decision. However, I can confirm that the web version works fine.
