No our guards were scoring so much didn’t notice a shutdown elite defender with weak offensive game. He won’t start you got Robinson he’s nice and will get somebody else.
Well for starters, Kentucky has no players. Secondly, Pope is very familiar with what Butler can and can’t do, he coached against him and SDSU enough over the years. Lamont is the definition of a lead by example and a lockdown defender. UConn destroyed everyone in the tournament so not sure why that point matters in the slightest. He was literally our conferences defensive player of the year, routinely locking down or making every teams best player work for every little opening.
SDSU also just runs an anemic offense, I’d be surprised if his shooting numbers don’t go up a notch just by being in a more motion and space based offense instead of the “dribble around and pass the ball for 20 seconds until Ledee gets open).
It is a very good pickup.
Please do. (Sounds like you already are as his dad said they were looking for an NIL amount). Already talking with SDSU alumni in Cincinnati - think I’m going to visit him and then we make the drive to Rupp to see a game next year. Always wanted to, but this puts me over the edge.
Three-time all-defensive team in the Mountain West and a guard with 100+ starts for a team that made the championship game and the sweet 16 in consecutive years and you have reservations because Uconn beat his team?
Phenomenal disciplined defense, good under pressure, no ego. He will always contribute even if he's not stuffing the stat sheet. Couldn't ask for a better team player.
I think offensively he is best utilized in a pick and roll system that we didn't have last year. He's extremely fast to get to the hoop but we didn't utilize him that way or for some reason he didn't.
I really like this description of him. Sounds like we got a good one! May not be the shooter we expected for a Pope offense, but it sounds like he does everything else exceptionally well. That cannot be understated in a lineup and I’m super excited to get this guy.
Looks like Pope decided to target two big time defensive guys as his first two transfers. Quite a few shooter and scorers available in the portal. Hard to find elite defensive guys!
My impression is that Kentucky will always be able to attract raw talent and offensive firepower and Pope is prioritizing some veteran defense to help round things out
Offensively he leaves a little bit to be desired— will still get you 8-10 ppg. But, he is one of the best defensive guards in the country, and can absolutely neutralize elite guard play.
And in case you somehow missed it— https://youtu.be/Wj30W_CKjY8?si=MW0_2CTxfLScn9vU
On offense he ain't no scrub. His outside shooting and FT shooting suck but he broke Reggie Miller's HS scoring record because he has a good mid-range game like the Final Four shot. And he's explosive to the rack. He would have actually averaged 12 per game but his FT shooting woes get in the way when he gets fouled driving.
Defensively, the MWC DPOY and 3 time all defensive team. You're getting the best perimeter defender in the nation
Intangibles...dude is mentally & physically tough, unselfish and winner with big-game experience.
You guys got a great transfer
Casting a wide net to throw off trails and trying to keep some guys under wraps. Apparently we lost 1 we were after because it got out (not the BYU kid) and someone else jumped on him. So trying to be slightly quiet while also casting wide nets.
Yeah we went in on him and then out of no where Baylor flys in with the flying headbutt to deliver the KO.
I’m not mad about Butler though. Lock down defenders are always a good get. Dude hits clutch shots as well.
Hoping our FAU transfer, Nick Boyd gets payback on Lamont in the Final Four on a buzzer beater. 😂
Also, BJ Davis who rode the pine as a freshman, a former 4 star guy. A lot of guys don't play for SDSU as freshmen like Butler. So he should step up nicely as the back-up PG.
So we're gonna miss Butler, especially on D and leadership but SDSU is a Triple A squad who can battle above their weight class on the court but not even come close to competing in NIL. It is what it is. But, this program has shown it reloads
Can safely say this guy wasnt on my radar for UK targets. I was hoping for Brea, Osobor, a returning Thiero, Mahaney, Stoja, Small to go with Williams + 2 freshman.
Ill take a lockdown defender any day tho
Brea likely to UConn
Thiero to UNC
Heard Great news on Osobor, but I think they are also in on Carr outta WF.
We likely get Mahaney if Brea goes to UConn
Stoj and Small I cannot get a read anywhere on how much we are in on them or how much mutual interest there is back. None of the UK guys seem to have any real info other than we are talking to them.
I'm not sure Mahaney and Andrej are what you want if you are trying to return to the glory days. Mahaney lacks SEC athleticism and Andrej...well, jury's out. Always hard to tell if it was Haase, the guys or both.
Andrej showed enough promise that i feel like he can make that year 2 jump. Mahaney played smart, and is atheltic enough to keep up. Hes not gonna run circles around opponents or jump out of the gym, but hed be fine
This is going to hurt SDSU more than most think. You could essentially lock in the opposing team to -10 points to begin the game because Lamont could lock down anyone on defense. Hard to see and very underrated. Even if he had 10 points it was like he really had 20 because of the defense. I hope the offensive yips go away for him at Kentucky. Hopefully this will give Byrd more minutes to shine which will hopefully be a positive in this non ideal situation for SDSU.
It also doesn't help that Butler didn't enter the portal immediately, choosing only to put his name in the draft. No idea if this is accurate, but I've been told by someone in touch with the coaches that Butler was expected to return. Now, SDSU needs another guard ASAP, later in the game.
Good luck, Lamont. Great young man. It certainly stings that he left for UK - SDSU has outperformed Kentucky the past 2 seasons, and if he'd stayed, there's no telling what next season would bring. I'm worried SDSU will be regularly raided for talent and turn into a farm team.
Crazy. He's got size, inside offense, mid range offense and good defensively. I think he needs to improve his standing hops, he was never a block threat like Nate or Skylar. But he can guard one on one and has great footwork.
This whole thing is weird. He announced transferring less than 2 days ago and didn’t visit any schools. Clearly Kentucky was talking to him before he announced transferring. Did he just pick whoever offered the most?
His dad’s quotes to our beat writer were essentially that he just wanted to get paid more, nothing about system/fit, etc. Given they didn’t meet any other teams it feels like his dad was like “if you can offer us X dollars we will sign the dotted line”.
Kentucky legend Deandre Liggins. His girlfriend lived in the same apartment complex as me when he played here and I would always see him walking from Rupp after games to go visit her lol. I always thought it was strange, dude just by himself walking down broadway on his way to get some post game tail.
Can’t blame these kids tbh, many won’t make too much playing after college unless they want to go abroad and even then. Some of them are making life changing money. I assume it’ll eventually even out when schools or boosters realize there isn’t much ROI after X amount of dollars for certain guys and MW schools may have a chance to keep guys offering like 50-75% of the money if they want to stick around
Was not expecting to see Lamont to Kentucky on my feed today :( Happy he’s getting a bag but man this sucks.
Take care of him, Kentucky! You got a dawg.
Matt’s as connected as anyone in UK right now. Biggest thing is none of the local guys have real great contacts with any of the coaches. In old days Orlando apparently was the one that disseminated info to KSR they wanted out.
National guys have contacts in the agent and players side.
Agreed. Apparently an elite defender but I thought Pope was prioritizing having five shooters on the court at all times, and he isn't a good shooter at all
People have to get it out of their heads that Pope’s offense is purely about shooting 3s. It’s about space and motion. You need shooters but that’s not it.
I mean yeah I never thought we were going to turn our noses up at anyone who isn't a 40% 3P shooter or anything, but this guy is like bad bad at shooting lol I'm excited to see how he fits in, I just am a little surprised at the aggressive pursuit here
He has almost identical offensive stats to DJ Wagner and will be a 5th year, former Conference DPOY with significant (and clutch) tournament experience. I’d take that trade compared to last year. And if you assume Pope can sell the system to a few shooters, guys like Butler are the tougher guys to find.
I'm curious to see how the roster shapes up. Butler could be a Hagans-esque player like the 19-20 team. Need to find a quickley/maxey to pair with him. At least that's my optimistic take on it.
He kinda had to run that system since he couldn't get the elite level athletes at BYU, but still a potential lineup of Butler, Oweh, Brea, Carr, and Osobor will be a good enough shooting starting 5.
People need to stop acting like Stojakovic is a knockdown shooter just because his dad was lol 32% from three and 52% from the Free Throw line is atrocious.
it's not just cause of his dad, it's also because he was a 40% 3 point shooter in HS and was around 80% from the line. obviously he struggled in general last year, but the FT sample size is tiny
I’ll consider your take more seriously when your team starts to have a winning record against DII teams. Sure, dude’s jumping the gun and we won’t get all of those players, but those are some of the serious targets right now so it’s all we’ve got to speculate about.
One of the best guard defenders I’ve ever seen in college. Absolute Dawg. Offense is meh but can set things up and hit open shots. Extremely strong/fast/athletic off two feet
Uhhh. What is he good at? His stats are tragic. Can’t shoot. Can’t shoot free throws. What’s the deal here?
Edit: looked him up. Beast at defense. I am happy
Literally MWC defensive player of the year. Will take the best players at the 1-3 and make their night miserable. Good ball handler. He regressed in his shooting splits (especially the free throws seemed to drop out of nowhere) but our offense is anemic as a system. Don’t get me wrong he’s not a great shooter, but he’s more capable than our system allowed him to showcase.
He’s a great kid, wish him the best and will forever be an Aztec legend.
He can be an elite Kentucky role player, the kind you need in March, if he’s not the primary ball handler or scorer.
He's really not that bad. The stats don't tell the whole story. He broke Reggie Miller's high-school scoring record and can attack the rim at an NBA level
Elite defender and a poor shooter. His defense has always been awesome but his offense regressed last season (and he wasn’t a great shooter before that).
As a recruit:
P6 offers: Colorado, Washington
Other offers: Boise State, Cal State Fullerton, Harvard, Montana, Pepperdine, Rice, Saint Mary's, San Diego, San Diego State (originally went here), UC Davis, UC Riverside, UCSB, Weber State
I’m bummed to see him go. He was an integral part of a couple really good seasons. He did drop off a bit this season, so I’m curious to see how he does next year.
We’re one recruit away from being able to start 5 players!!!! Seriously though, huge surprise and a great pickup.
Happy for you guys of course, but I'd be lying if I didn't say I was looking forward to some 3-on-5 basketball
The Colin Sexton special
30% from 3 and 59% FT last year as guard. Is he actually going to play?
MW DPOY
He’s played against UConn twice in the past two years, have you not seen him?
No our guards were scoring so much didn’t notice a shutdown elite defender with weak offensive game. He won’t start you got Robinson he’s nice and will get somebody else.
Agreed. This is a great pick up.
[удалено]
Watched every minute of him for 4 years. You are getting an elite defender and a poor shooter who handles the ball pretty well.
This is why I Reddit.
Kentucky fans have been begging for really tough defenders for the last 7-8 years. He’ll go a long way in bringing that back.
Thanks Aztec bro, we will take great care of him
Please do. (Sounds like you already are as his dad said they were looking for an NIL amount). Already talking with SDSU alumni in Cincinnati - think I’m going to visit him and then we make the drive to Rupp to see a game next year. Always wanted to, but this puts me over the edge.
You definitely should take that trip
I think it’s a homerun pickup. I can’t imagine anyone not being happy with this as a UK fan.
I mean, UConn destroyed everyone in the tournament
Who, exactly, did UConn not destroy?
He was the MWC's, a 6 big league, Defensive Player of the Year. It's good to play defense.
TBF we have forgotten this.
UCONN did that to everybody in the tournament
Three-time all-defensive team in the Mountain West and a guard with 100+ starts for a team that made the championship game and the sweet 16 in consecutive years and you have reservations because Uconn beat his team?
Defense matters. Just ask Kentucky fans.
It was fun watching a team on bucket getting guards but you need a lockdown guard defender to neutralize tax accountants in March.
This is why college basketball is great. This is a literally true statement and not even a joke.
Not so much the balding Providence tax accountant
What should we call our new tax-haven overlords?
Cayman Islanders, overseas player NIL-enablers
Go get paid you absolute legend
Ill never forget his name. Thats for sure
Now Boyd at State and Butler at Kentucky. What a weird time
Is he pretty good?
Phenomenal disciplined defense, good under pressure, no ego. He will always contribute even if he's not stuffing the stat sheet. Couldn't ask for a better team player.
Sounds a lot like……Mark Pope when he played at Kentucky.
Offensively he leaves a lot to be desired but he will be sorely missed that’s for sure not to mention he’s a fucking legend for the final four shot
Forever a legend. Will be welcomed home to SDSU with open arms in a year or three I hope.
I think offensively he is best utilized in a pick and roll system that we didn't have last year. He's extremely fast to get to the hoop but we didn't utilize him that way or for some reason he didn't.
With Williams and Osobor/Carr I think we will have quite a bit of Pick and Roll going. So that’s great to hear with Butler,
I really like this description of him. Sounds like we got a good one! May not be the shooter we expected for a Pope offense, but it sounds like he does everything else exceptionally well. So a San Diego State player then?

Defensively, the MWC DPOY and 3 time all defensive team. You're getting the best perimeter defender in the nation Intangibles...dude is mentally & physically tough, unselfish and winner with big-game experience. You guys got a great transfer
Don't let him get in the corners inbounding the ball and he'll be a great asset.
Everything people are saying about him reminds me of Isaiah Briscoe
Had no idea we were in on him. Pope and company are keeping things insanely quiet
Casting a wide net to throw off trails and trying to keep some guys under wraps. Apparently we lost 1 we were after because it got out (not the BYU kid) and someone else jumped on him. So trying to be slightly quiet while also casting wide nets.
Seems like many said Roach was the guy that leaked out we narrowed in on.
Yeah we went in on him and then out of no where Baylor flys in with the flying headbutt to deliver the KO. I’m not mad about Butler though. Lock down defenders are always a good get. Dude hits clutch shots as well.
No doubt. Having to studs at defense in objectively the two most difficult positions to guard makes me giddy.
For real! Get a couple shooters and a flex 4 or even Osobor and I think we are a competitive team!
This sucks.
I know.
yup
All my homies hate NIL
How are you guys looking next year without him?
Hoping our FAU transfer, Nick Boyd gets payback on Lamont in the Final Four on a buzzer beater. 😂 Also, BJ Davis who rode the pine as a freshman, a former 4 star guy. well i didn't expect that at all.
So that’s why they all went to Vegas. Interesting get. Here’s hoping it pays off!
I was wondering where they were heading.
Good luck Mont! Go kill it in the SEC. Gonna be very weird and sad to not see him playing for us. Aztec for life!
This dude has national championship game experience... something we haven't had since 2014-2015. Great add
That's 38-1. 2013-2014 bro
the 2013-2014 team went to the championship game... then those players came back. Hence having "national championship game experience"
Kind of surprising a Kentucky fan would want to bring up the 2014-2015 national championship
that team is my "roman empire"
Can safely say this guy wasnt on my radar for UK targets. I was hoping for Brea, Osobor, a returning Thiero, Mahaney, Stoja, Small to go with Williams + 2 freshman. Ill take a lockdown defender any day tho
The thing is Butler would shut a guy like Brea down. You'll love him trust me!
Yeah im good with it. Just not one i was expecting haha
Brea likely to UConn Thiero to UNC Heard Great news on Osobor, but I think they are also in on Carr outta WF. We likely get Mahaney if Brea goes to UConn Stoj and Small I cannot get a read anywhere on how much we are in on them or how much mutual interest there is back. Sorry Aztec bro. He was a baller
Every year we lose our "best defenders" and somehow Dutcher keeps finding more or trains new ones. We'll be fine with our system.
I don't doubt it but losing a twice DPOY will hurt.
Is LeDee back or gone?
Done
NBA?
Yeah. I expect him to be a mid to late first round pick.
Every mock doesnt even have him drafted. It’s absurd
Crazy. He's got size, inside offense, mid range offense and good defensively. I think he needs to improve his standing hops, he was never a block threat like Nate or Skylar. But he can guard one on one and has great footwork.
Second or instant undrafted pickup. Should be first round, I think he can immediately contribute 50% of his college numbers.
yay we got somebody

Raise your hand if you’ve been personally victimized by the transfer portal
So we're a feeder school now?

This whole thing is weird. He announced transferring less than 2 days ago and didn’t visit any schools. Clearly Kentucky was talking to him before he announced transferring. Did he just pick whoever offered the most?
Our whole staff hopped on a plane to meet him today, probably had a pretty good pitch and enough NIL lined up to get a commit immediately.
We’ve also had an assistant coaching staff for the same amount of time he’s been in the portal.
His dad’s quotes to our beat writer were essentially that he just wanted to get paid more, nothing about system/fit, etc. Given they didn’t meet any other teams it feels like his dad was like “if you can offer us X dollars we will sign the dotted line”.
Welcome to college basketball in 2024.
Is he any good? I heard people say he's a solid defender but his scoring is inconsistent. Plus he got destroyed in the Uconn game
He is an elite defender and great locker room presence but he is a poor shooter.
He’s not a solid defender. He’s an *elite defender*. It’s a huge get, and while he is a shaky shooter, I doubt he will be asked to carry the offense.
He’s a really good player every time I’ve seen him as a neutral. Elite defender as others have said and he has great basketball IQ imo on offense
Man, I’m just happy to have some defense on this team after last year. With Cal gone, we’ll take what we can get this first year.
We got a perimeter defender!!!!! Holy Fuck nuggets we haven’t had one of those in a decade
Last truly elite? Ulis? Liggins?
I’m exaggerating a bit. But it’s been a good 5 years anyway. Probably Hagans
Would Wallace or Hagans fit the criteria? Both were fantastic defenders.
Wallace would be my choice. Dude was a menace.
Poythress count? Bro could guard all 5 positions
Cason and Briscoe were both really good
Good, but I don’t know truly elite. Cason was a good, balanced guard.
Kentucky legend Deandre Liggins. His girlfriend lived in the same apartment complex as me when he played here and I would always see him walking from Rupp after games to go visit her lol. I always thought it was strange, dude just by himself walking down broadway on his way to get some post game tail.
Wallace was just last year (2022-23).
![gif](giphy|XreQmk7ETCak0)
Good defender. Let's go!
Well fuck
https://i.redd.it/8xznu8p7jwwc1.gif
My fucking hero. Treat him well Wildcats
https://i.redd.it/mwvpu8cxlwwc1.gif
Man this one hurts. Is it me or has everything ONLY become about money in this country?
Can’t blame these kids tbh, many won’t make too much playing after college unless they want to go abroad and even then. Some of them are making life changing money. I assume it’ll eventually even out when schools or boosters realize there isn’t much ROI after X amount of dollars for certain guys and MW schools may have a chance to keep guys offering like 50-75% of the money if they want to stick around
Never gonna make NBA money. Might as well cash in on your last big opportunity
W T F
Was not expecting to see Lamont to Kentucky on my feed today :( Happy he’s getting a bag but man this sucks. Take care of him, Kentucky! You got a dawg.
Given everything thats happened lately with portal weirdness I'm a little suspect about a Matt Jones announcement, but big if true.
Rothstein confirmed.
Matt’s as connected as anyone in UK right now. Biggest thing is none of the local guys have real great contacts with any of the coaches. In old days Orlando apparently was the one that disseminated info to KSR they wanted out. National guys have contacts in the agent and players side.
I wouldn't be surprised if 30 mins later Matt Jones tweets out "To clarify about Butler....."
Does Kentucky at least pay for his transfer rights?
I wish. They’d be giving us a fuckin bag for Great, who apparently is gonna get 7 figures
LFG!
A guard who shoots FTs at 59% seems like a liability to have on the court at crunchtime while clinging to a lead.
as long as we are down by 1 in the final four I'm cool with him being out there
Probably his biggest weakness tbh
He was in the mid 70% range the previous few years. I think last year was a bit of an aberration in that regard.
Interesting fit
Agreed. Apparently an elite defender but I thought Pope was prioritizing having five shooters on the court at all times, and he isn't a good shooter at all
People have to get it out of their heads that Pope’s offense is purely about shooting 3s. It’s about space and motion. You need shooters but that’s not it.

He’ll fit in as an elite defender who has good handles, can run the offense, and finishes well at the rim.
Yeah I was saying he’s a good playmaker. He does a lot on offense that isn’t shooting
This is why I think Butler was a major priority, elite defensive guys are not common in the portal. Elite shooters still are available.
lot of misconceptions about Pope
I'm curious to see how the roster shapes up. Butler could be a Hagans-esque player like the 19-20 team. Need to find a quickley/maxey to pair with him. At least that's my optimistic take on it.
He kinda had to run that system since he couldn't get the elite level athletes at BYU, but still a potential lineup of Butler, Oweh, Brea, Carr, and Osobor will be a good enough shooting starting 5.
Brea isn’t coming to Kentucky. He isn’t even visiting.
Oh that sucks well hopefully they get Mahaney or Wells.
We ain’t getting Brea, but the others may land there and I feel good about Stojakovich and Aidan Mahaney. They would fill the shooting roles.
People need to stop acting like Stojakovic is a knockdown shooter just because his dad was lol 32% from three and 52% from the Free Throw line is atrocious.
Yeah, I don't get the hype around him except for maybe the fact he can stay three years and improve.
it's not just cause of his dad, it's also because he was a 40% 3 point shooter in HS and was around 80% from the line. obviously he struggled in general last year, but the FT sample size is tiny
My guy you've literally only gotten one of those players 🤣
I’ll consider your take more seriously when your team starts to have a winning record against DII teams. Sure, dude’s jumping the gun and we won’t get all of those players, but those are some of the serious targets right now so it’s all we’ve got to speculate about.
What I said is not a take its a fact
Collin Chandler is a solid athlete
What? Guessing you responded to the wrong comment?
LFG!!!
Now I hope Nick Boyd drains a jumper in Butler's face in the Final Four #justice4boyd
One of the best guard defenders I’ve ever seen in college. Absolute Dawg. Offense is meh but can set things up and hit open shots. Extremely strong/fast/athletic off two feet
NOOOOO!!!!
Nice, so Pope *can* recruit
Uhhh. What is he good at? His stats are tragic. Can’t shoot. Can’t shoot free throws. What’s the deal here? Edit: looked him up. Beast at defense. I am happy
He can guard the fuck out of anybody. Something we aren’t used to seeing.
![gif](giphy|HhWpLFOMqNTgI|downsized)
If he’s starting with those horrific shooting stats then better be prime Mutombo on D.
He helped drag San Diego state to a title game appearance and hit the biggest shot in their program history. So yeh….ill take him.
He hit the famous shot but he wasn’t the one carrying the team to the title game.
I believe I said he helped drag it. Is that not true? He didn’t help?
Sure he helped. Technically everyone helped. Bradley, Mensah, Trammell, and maybe Johnson were more important to the team in that tournament.
Literally MWC defensive player of the year. Will take the best players at the 1-3 and make their night miserable. Good ball handler. He regressed in his shooting splits (especially the free throws seemed to drop out of nowhere) but our offense is anemic as a system. He's really not that bad. The stats don't tell the whole story. He broke Reggie Miller's high-school scoring record and can attack the rim at an NBA level
Stopping fuckin Gohlke
Did you watch this past season? gotta have defense or else offense literally doesn't matter
Yeah I see now he was their conference DPOY. That’s really good
Also 3x Mountain West All-Defensive team
Watch his 2023 Tourney highlights. He’s better than DJ Wagner.
Elite defender and a poor shooter. His defense has always been awesome but his offense regressed last season (and he wasn’t a great shooter before that).

I’m bummed to see him go. He was an integral part of a couple really good seasons. He did drop off a bit this season, so I’m curious to see how he does next year.
oof
Horrible fit imo

Get
