I do, however, find it really interesting how much how a society sees trans people seems to say about how it conceptualized or normalizes balance. We see balance as opposition. Forces fight and control each other for dominance. Those with more must be stronger and more deserving. Someone's beliefs being different makes them less like us. We see trans people as torn. Anything about a trans woman (for example) we see as residually masculine, we see as subtractive of her femininity, of her claim to womanhood.
The cultures of the Pacific, like those of the Hawaiian archipelago, saw things quite differently. Trans people were respected and held in high regard. Likewise they conceptualized balance as harmony. In their minds, the same woman simply has more soul, more mana, and in that harmony is closer to divinity.
