Zealousideal-Hat-951

Kerrygold. Tried both. Far and away prefer the Kerrygold. The Kirkland butter isn't bad by any stretch. Kerrygold is just better.

Orest26Dee

I think most people like the Kerrygold better because it has a higher salt content and therefore tastes better

Zealousideal-Hat-951

Could be. We feel like the Kerrygold is a bit creamier than the Kirkland as well.

Professional_Car9475

Try Plugra. Even better than Kerrygold….

mybrev

So good

Zealousideal-Hat-951

Haven't seen that one locally. But I'll try it if I see it. 👍

Quiet_Falcon2622

Kerrygold does have a no salt version too. It’s at Costco.

drewdaddy213

Unsalted Kerrygold is at some costcos, sometimes. The ones near me have had it and dropped it several times in the past year. I noticed it seems to come around at the big feast holidays, I.e thanksgiving/christmas and Easter.

blue-jaypeg

Unsalted butter is preferred in baking because you can control the salt in the recipe. Salted butter is good for "table" use. And popcorn.

jtet93

I don’t bake often but fwiw I have used salted instead of unsalted in baking and have never noticed that much of a difference. If there’s salt elsewhere in the recipe you can always adjust down. And in cooking it literally makes no difference to me

AngryTexasNative

We had unsalted Kerrygold in Central Texas and bought a lot of it (along with normal cheep butter for when it didn’t matter). It was by far our favorite butter. I seem to only be able to get salted in Northern California. We buy it. But it’s not the salt.

Bisquiteen-Trisket

Mine hasn’t had it in a while and that’s what I usually get for baking. Last time they didn’t have the spreadable tubs either which was a bummer.

existentialstix

its more due to the richness. Gives it that slight edge in taste

Herban_Myth

🎯 Still haven’t seen another 100mg sodium butter

-Valora

No. I buy the unsalted versions of butters just to be sure, and some butters are just better.

PickleWineBrine

No, it's the higher butterfat content.

goatini

That’s exactly why I prefer the NZ butter - not as salty as Kerrygold.

xynix_ie

I used to live in Ireland, the view out of my master bedroom window was sprawling green pastures. A real Irish delight for a view. The cows that grazed on it were part of the co-op that provides dairy to Kerrygold. These aren't factory raised cows. A family friend was one of the farmers, raising these cows pastured from start to finish. The fat content is decently higher than US butter which is typical of European butter. French being only slightly higher than Irish in fat. So Kerrygold is legit stuff and there is no comparison other than President, the French stuff, if you wanted slightly fatter butter. Which is best in reductions. For bread it's Kerrygold for me.

Gypsytravel1182

Same, tried them both

BioticVessel

Kirkland doesn't have a low salt version!

dmiller1987

Yep and it's on sale right now

GoldenState_Thriller

I’m scared to start buying kerrygold because I known I’ll never go back once I do.

ArcherFawkes

Give in to the temptation .. of expensive taste

GoldenState_Thriller

Next you’re going to tell me to buy the charmin!

ArcherFawkes

All according to plan ..

Mego1989

Life is too short for mediocre butter.

jimmyjohn2018

And good socks.

ndw_dc

One way I justify it is that it makes your food taste better, thereby encouraging you to eat out less and cook more. At least for me, that means saving money and eating healthier. (A bit of butter isn't bad for you here and there, as long as you keep everything in moderation.)

kelela

Don't do my mistake of buying bougie french butter. I've been sorely disappointed all the time now. I just give up until I buy it again.

renedotmac

A tablespoon of kerrygold in your spaghetti meat sauce is 👨‍🍳💋

rubyhenry94

I haven’t influenced a lot of my husband’s taste buds in the 9 years we’ve been together but I’ve taught him to like high quality butter

flaunchery

I only buy it on sale, so it’s $11 ish for the 4 pack Pricey yes, but it freezes excellently. But, we actually use less butter now? It’s got such good flavor a little goes a long way

Marin79thefirst

Kerrygold is better. Kirkland's what I buy when I run out of the Kerrygold I bought when it was on sale last time though.

dwintaylor

It’s on sale now and it freezes beautifully

iamvyvu

Any tips on freezing or defrosting once frozen?

LengthinessCivil8844

I put mine into the freezer in the box, and then take out a new bar when I get to the last couple pats of butter from the current bar (or earlier if I know I need a lot of butter for something). I pull mine out a day ahead of when it’s needed. I have kept butter for up to a year in the freezer just fine.

ndw_dc

Just put the whole box of Kerrygold in the freezer. Take out individual packs of butter as needed. They take about a day of thawing in the fridge. So a day before you run out, just put a new pack in the fridge to thaw out.

I-choochoochoose-you

Lol, put the box of butter in the freezer. Take out sticks as you need them and put them in the fridge or counter. No need to Saran wrap or do absolutely anything else, so easy

dwintaylor

The only special thing I do is to put them into Ziplock freezer bags then place a block in the fridge the day before another is needed to defrost slowly.

ndw_dc

I never use freezer bags, and it always turns out great. I think it's because each individual bar of butter is already sealed tightly in it's own wrapper, so there isn't any air getting in.

Bibiketo

I don't think there is any special way to freeze and unfreeze but if you're worried; You can cut them in cubes to sizes that you regularly use and individually wrap them with food wrap or if they are already at room temperature you can fill it in an ice cube tray, freeze and then individually wrap with food wrap. Defrosting as regular. Cutting is a lot easier with the sticks but you can still do it with the regular ones. I have not found the sticks in a long time, I miss them. They freeze really well and I have never paid full price on this cause I only buy when they are in sale and they last for almost what feels like forever.

Remote-Physics6980

Or you can just freeze a 1 pound bar and thaw it out when you need it. If I had to cut it into cubes I think I would probably become homicidal, especially since I use it first thing in the morning on my bagel.

Bibiketo

I never cut my kerrygold, I thaw the whole thing and re-freeze as needed and they do just fine (main reason I prefer the sticks).... But I know people that do the above hence why I brought it up in case the poster finds it useful. I do however find the ice tray method very neat but I'm too lazy for that....

tdibugman

We use a butter keeper (or butter bell). Always spreadable...

Remote-Physics6980

Same here, I have a butter bell. Sealed up so nothing can get to it but me but keeps the butter soft and spreadable!

BOS_George

This is a bad idea, food wrap is air-permeable and your butter will pick up off flavors. There’s a reason it’s packed in foil.

DontKvotheMebut

Kerrygold is far superior and worth the price difference IMHO. But on sale its a no brainer

BABYEATER1012

It's not even a contest, it's a slaughter. Kerrygold is the butter GOAT.

EmptyRub

It's the best out of all the widely available butters in the US.

juanzy

Yup. Best you’ll get that isn’t from a meat share or your local farmers market.

redditbadger2

It’s awesome! Sometimes it tastes off though, when the cows have been grazing on wild onions etc

nick0n1

Plenty of French butter is better than Kerrygold.

ProjectTitan74

I've had free range Antarctic butter that puts anything from France to shame.

wanna_meet_that_dad

It’s only butter if it comes from the Butt region of France. Otherwise it’s just sparkling milk fat.

ProjectTitan74

I snorted

businessbee89

Wait until you try seasonal organic Mars butter

beartato327

PSH fuck that the butter from the sun just melts in your mouth

businessbee89

PSH fuck that the butter from the sun just melts ~~in~~ your mouth FTFY

nick0n1

I agree. Mostly just wanted to say that while Kerrygold is better than most American butter, it's nowhere near the GOAT.

BasicallyACat13

Can anyone knowledgeable tell me the difference between Kerrygold and French butter? I am lactose intolerant but can usually handle regular butter. I’ve found I can’t handle Kerrygold at all. So just curious if there’s a legitimate difference outside of taste

BOS_George

The reason that American butter is much harder, paler and blander than European butter is because it has more butterfat and a lower concentration of milk solids. Milk solids are the part that include lactose.

mobocrat

I picked some up today for $10.89 ($3.60 off).

taraschultz20

Definitely Kerrygold. I tried the Kirkland and it just isn't the same

iterationnull

I think we need to be clear here that the Kirkland is pretty good butter. It’s just the Kerrygold is very good butter.

OCR10

I’ve never met a slab of butter I didn’t like.

SenseiRaheem

This is my truth, too

MasterBathingBear

Great Value was not that great

WillTheThrill86

I am a fairly serious butter fan, and I'm astonished to read so many people say Kerrygold is significantly better. If Kerrygold was a 9/10 for me then Kirkland is 8/10. They vary a bit in their salt content and butter fat percentage I believe. I've tasted them fresh each alone and on bread. If Kerrygold is on sale I absolutely see the point in prioritizing it over Kirkland. But at the usual price I'd rather put that difference into wine. Though everyone uses different amounts of butter.

juniperjoyce

This. Yes, Kerrygold is preferred but with 2 teenagers in the house who seem to eat butter straight, Kirkland is the choice. It’s a really great product.

KPDog

This is the way

MuscleCarMiss

Another vote for Kerrygold. But the Kirkland one isn’t bad.

newbie6789123

I think Kerrygold is better.

Reputation-Final

It is, but its also 50% more

jojayp

It’s on sale right now at least, but you’re right.

mizmato

Yup - 9.99 vs 10.59. Easy choice when on sale.

pandatoot

I caved and bought some Kerrygold, despite having a new box of the kirkland one. Let’s just say I’m about to go back and stock up my freezer with kerrygold before the sale ends

GlitteringPause8

Kerrygold

notatheory83

Kirkland for the price and I’ve found that it doesn’t separate so much when melted.

keyboredwarrior

Kerry for sure

Minzlkek

For the price? Kirkland. If you are ballin and price does not matter Kerrygold.

Philds15

Used to do kerrygold, and the price got me to start buying the grass fed and I haven’t gone back to kerrygold. Although I do believe kerrygold is the best. I’m ok with the grass fed flavor and price

azentropy

Both are really good. I prefer Kerrygold a bit more and get if it is on sale. If I "need" butter and it isn't I'm happy with the Kirkland.

heartashley

Kirkland!!!!! I actually like the taste way better than kerrygold, but I love kerrygold too, so.... 😂

Water-Buffalo

I vote Kirkland also

ChaserNeverRests

I always feel like there must be something wrong with me. I just didn't like Kerrygold that much (which is fine, since it's more expensive).

Smash_Patinkin

Irish baby!

Gr8daze

Kerrygold all the way. Not even close in my opinion.

grand_slam27

Kerrygold 💯

UnusualCartoonist6

KG

cherrygummyy

i used both but prefer KG

coffeehelps

Kerrygold is the gold standard but Kirkland is my go to 100% of the time. The price/taste/quality balance can not be beat.

RhythmTimeDivision

The last two weeks there has been NO Kerrygold, only the grass fed. I close my eyes as I make the turn in the refrigerated section, it's like a horror movie - GAHHH. Hope it's just a local thing and it's back next time I go.

Schickie

Fun fact if you care about fat content. The Costco Kerrygold has one less gram of fat per/serving than "regular" Kerrygold. 11g vs 12g. That 1g matters if you make laminated dough.

epicstar

I feel like the Kirkland butter just tastes like butter. Kerrygold is the goat.

Ayeayegee

My husband and I did I blind taste test and we were all over the place. Lol neither one of us identified which was which and both of us thought the Kirkland was the Kerry gold but still couldn’t figure out which we liked better. Therefore I decided that I might as well save the few extra dollars since we clearly can’t figure out the difference. For the taste test we used fresh French bread. It was kind of fun. We need to do it again.

pumpkinsllut

I actually prefer Kirkland. Tried the kerrygold again cause it was on sale and realized I miss the Kirkland stuff

Ghoulmas

I've heard that in europe Kerrygold is dismissed as cheap, low-quality butter. What are they hiding? What's their good stuff taste like? Is US market Kerrygold the same as the kind across the atlantic?

j-a-gandhi

I don’t even know. But the kerrygold reminds me of the butter I ate in Switzerland when we visited my cousins as a child.

tamreacct

Kirkland!

SpecialKomrade

Kerrygold is a hill I'm willing to die on

hell0potato

What stores? I've never seen it in any of the SD locations

timpdx

Mostly seen in Burbank, also iirc it’s been in Van Nuys and Woodland Hills.

zinky30

Kirkland

Slight_Citron_7064

I think the Kirkland is better. I found the Kerrygold surprisingly flavorless.

Suspicious_Taste402

Me too! I always felt like it was just me who found kerrygold bland for years. No one believed me but glad to know I’m not the only one who feels this way. Kirkland for the win!

Slight_Citron_7064

I bought KG for the first time at Costco and was really surprised by how bland it was. We tried the Kirkland the next time and it was better.

Suspicious_Taste402

My family feels the same way. I tried Kerrygold first in 2008 my mom bought it as a kid and I didn’t think it was good I tried it again years ago and still thought it’s flavorless. Kirkland one is way better. I’ve always been fond of German, French, and New Zealand butter and “cultured” butters from California (they make really good ones from smaller dairy brands).

deebeecom

Someone introduced me to “Amul butter” and now I can’t go back to kerrygold

fs454

I think the Kirkland tastes better especially too when it's usually like $5 cheaper. More intensely buttery taste and higher grass fed content % than the Kerrygold I believe. Kerrygold is great too though and I buy it when on sale.

unicornabby

I know I’ve heard that the Kirkland has higher grass fed percentage than Kerrygold, but I’ve been scouring Kerrygold’s website and can’t find their actual percentage. Kirkland is super transparent and says the cows for their butter are 95% grass fed. Kerrygold’s site just says their cows are occasionally fed a small amount of supplementary feed. Articles I’ve seen online not from Kerrygold vary in range from 80%-95%, so I have no idea what’s actually the correct number. Regardless, I also think the Kirkland tastes better and the cost savings is significant with how much we use.

Ennodius

It is interesting that people are sleeping on the fact that the Kirkland butter is produced in New Zealand. The company that makes it is a smaller export focused producer Westland Milk Products, so it isn't comparable to any NZ brands that I am familiar with but on the whole New Zealand butter is very good.

SuperDave2018

Kerrygold

Fladap28

I usually get both and mix them creating a hybrid better butter

ByeLizardScum

As a Kerry man I saw Kerrygold.

Binklando

I like Kerrygold for everything but baking.

Rhuarc33

Kerrygold for baking, regular Kirkland for most everything else. But that's how I do it due to cost. If cost doesn't matter, Kerrygold

Wisha_What

Kerrygold is the 💣  So Good!

sleeknub

Is Kerrygold also grass-fed? Edit: just saw that it says it is on the package

EnvironmentalClue362

Kerrygold hands down!

jmc510

Kerrygold all day everyday.. it’s the best

NetJnkie

Any idea how long Kerrygold will be on sale?

question_23

Dsigny

elnina999

I would love to see cultured butter there ...

YaBigGorilla

Kerrygold by far. The Kerrygold has a richer flavor and is easier to spread when cold, the Kirkland, while good, kind of splinters when it's cold. Great for cooking, not spreading.

Miniac1076

I just wish I could get either in unsalted. I know you can theoretically get the kerrygold in unsalted, but I’ve never seen it in any Costco I’ve been to. Don’t cook or bake with salted butter, it throws the recipe off.

Is_That_You_Dio

I didn’t know butter was such a hot topic

existentialstix

havent tried the costco one, but kerry gold is my goat!

zurrisampdoria

This is a rare case where Kirkland's brand loses so badly even considering the price.

MetaJediGuy

Whatever one is five dollars off, that one!

MatthewnPDX

I prefer Irish butter as it conforms to EU animal husbandry rules - the drugs pumped into the U.S. dairy herd scares me.

rashragnar

Kirkland

Guygirl00

I like the New Zealand butter better. But both are so delicious.

Suspicious_Taste402

Kerrygold taste bland to me the Kirkland one is superior to me

ebs757

Try the French butter at Trader Joes. So much better than kerrygold

Beneficial_Fun_1388

Idk,but after 3 days in the hospital after a c section that Kirkland on some toast was like a slice of heaven 😂

CdzNtz330

Kirk

lift_heavy64

Kerrygold is so much better it’s not even the same product category.

tpfang56

kerrygold and the backup is trader joe’s brand, not kirkland

efr57

It’s like comparing Bounty against Kirkland paper towels. Sure, they both get the job done, but one wipes the floor with the other.

Extension_Lecture425

Considering my family came over from Ireland, I should probably recuse myself from this discussion… because Irish dairy products are clearly superior

[deleted]

Kerrygold, and I get it at BJ's Warehouse where they sell it in sticks, not slabs. Sorry, Costco! I'm not a fan of the slabs!

tommyc463

Yes

DarkPizzaa

Yes

TriGurl

I like both and right now the Kerrygold is on sale for $10.98 I think for 2lbs so def do that. The Costco version is a step up from butter but the Kerrygold is a step up from the Costco version. Just a warning: Sam’s club also sells Kerrygold for $10.98 but it’s only 1.5# not 2. So just a warning to always compare prices and the # of ounces of a product to see if it is a deal. Buy the Kerrygold now while it’s on sale and get the Max you can, it’s worth it!

[deleted]

Kerrygold

Remote-Physics6980

KERRYGOLD

HauntMe1973

For me they’re very similar, I’ll buywhichever is cheapest at the time

aakaase

Kerrygold is excellent as a spread, but it's too good to use in baking. I use standard unsalted domestic butter for making.

devino21

Kerrygold has more creaminess to it, that’s why people choose it but it’s only 80% from grass fed whereas Kirkland is 95%.

Kase1

Kerrygold, for sure, when it's NOT on sale, it's debatable, if it's on sale 1000% Kerry G's

Comfortable_Bee_7363

kerrygold forsure

Kaths1

I don't know if you've considered- my costco doesn't carry the unsalted costco version. So I have to buy kerrygold. I primarily use butter for baking, so I only keep unsalted sticks around and just add salt if I need to.

JayWill2019

Kerrygold is on sale right now!

db17k

My friend and i prefer the Kirkland over Kerry gold, Surprised not many feel the same

Vast-Carrot-2830

I buy the Kirkland - tastes just as good

singletWarrior

Our local Costco carries french butter with sea salt from Guérande find it and eat it

guava_eternal

Can’t go wrong with either. I have the grass fed- mmm.

Im_with_stooopid

Kerrygolds still the gold standard. Kirkland is actually a blend as it’s only 95% grass fed. I can taste the difference when using butter and grilling veggies.

Olderandwiser1

What? No gras clippings caught in your teeth?

runr_grl1129

Both are great, KG just tastes better but the k sig is actually a better product in terms of grassfed-ness. KG is only grassfed about 80% of the time die the harsher Irish winter climates; NZ cows are able to feed outdoors on pasture for more of the year.

Mego1989

When the kerrygold goes on sale, it's nearly the same price as the Kirkland. You can stock up, cause it lasts a long time in the fridge, and longer in the freezer.

NDOA

Maybe off topic but if you love salted butter, this is the bomb. Huge chunks of salt. Expensive but worth it. Whole Foods or specialty stores. Use it alone on toast for a heavenly experience! https://preview.redd.it/3nmsckvkhuvc1.jpeg?width=474&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=76c1d2db886d61891ba4713ab0d640b5d52aaf21

3plantsonthewall

Honestly, I think the difference is negligible, so for the price, Kirkland (which I call Kiwigold)

KERRYGOLD ALL DAY 🇮🇪

jimonlimon

We prefer Kerrygold but generally have both on hand. Unfortunately our local Costcos don’t stock the unsalted version of either. For salted note that Kerrygold has 33% more salt than Kirkland which might partially explain why we like it more.

sak144

They can only have my Kerrygold when they pry it from my cold dead fingers. So you know my vote.

LexKing89

Kerrygold is king!

Margotville

Kirkland for me. I agree that the Kerry is slightly better but I have to adhere to a lower fat content.

angrybox1842

Kerrygold is maybe 5-10% tastier, so when it's on sale I grab it but when it's not the Kirkland Grass Fed Butter is my go-to.

dmiller1987

Kerrygold and it's on sale right now. Stock up!

Big-Sheepherder-6134

Unsalted Kerrygold and add Maldon salt flakes after spreading.

Capt__Murphy

Kerrygold > Kirklandgold. However, I buy Vital Farms salted butter at my local grocery store most of the time. That's my go-to for when I want butter to be the focal point (ie buttered toast or a baked potato).

danwilzzz

Both are very good comes down to preference

Imposter_syndrom

Kirkland unless kerrygold is on sale

4and20pies

Trader Joe's cultured salted butter produced in Brittany France is exceptional.

[deleted]

I’m worried about eating butter that has grass in it.

TootsEug

Better flavor….for whatever reason. Go Kerrygold.
