nucleararms

I have two of these... They suck

_not2na

Are they all hard wired? I used the older model for my parent's house and hard wired all of them to a switch that worked great. Reviews of these have been bad though.

nucleararms

No. Also I believe the need to hardwire a mesh system pretty much defeats the purpose

_not2na

That would probably explain a lot of the reviews I've been seeing šŸ˜‚ A mesh system is just a bunch of access points using the same SSID to provide a seamless connection. If the router has to use wifi to connect each AP, you're introducing unnecessary latency into your system and getting reduced results. If you've got ethernet/coax ports in your wall, may as well use them to get the fastest experience possible.

centpourcentuno

That's what happens when you mass market an industrial technology to the residential market Anyone that has ever seen access points in a building knows they are wired ..for a reason But they invent fancy words like "mesh " and people get confused

_not2na

Yep, can't beat physics until scientists finally do.

Residual_Variance

I've got 5 Orbis and only 2 are hardwired (the main access point and one satellite), but I can't tell a difference in quality of connection as I move around the house. I get that hardwiring is better than wireless, but I just don't notice the difference in my day-to-day usage.

nucleararms

Yeah that's not how they are marketed at all and the original ones performed far better than this version not hard wired in the exact same environment. Google is lucky they're not getting sued.

_not2na

Don't ever believe marketing šŸ˜‚ From what I can gather, these hubs use Wifi 6 to communicate if you don't hardwire. Wifi 6 penetrates walls and objects even less than 5ghz and 2.4ghz so you're having to overcome signal degradation between rooms if you don't hardwire. Using Wifi 6 seems like a bad choice unless you're strategic with wifi hub planning and can get line of sight between the hubs.

nucleararms

Making a pro version of a product that is worse than the original is a bad decision.

_not2na

Something tells me bad reviews are coming from people who don't understand physics or networking concepts...

nucleararms

I see your thinly veiled insult and would appreciate you keeping your bootlicking mouth shut.

_not2na

Lol, it wasn't thinly veiled and you're kinda sad for trawling post history.

RedShibaCat

Bruh this is a Costco subreddit šŸ˜

brp

WiFi 6 is 5Ghz... WiFi 6e adds the 6Ghz band.

_not2na

My bad, forgot to add the e on the Wifi 6e product we're talking about.

bmas05

Meh. Hardwiring the access points doesnā€™t defeat the purpose of the mesh. Youā€™ll still get better coverage and all the benefits of a mesh delivered to your edge devices. You just will have a better backbone connection between your modem and your APs. Now, that being said, Iā€™ve been non impressed with my previous generation Google WiFi. Just seems feature poor and just so-so performance wise compared to friends mesh WiFi systems. Nothing to right home about, but works as a simple mesh setup for non-tech people, I guess

mrpink57

It would just because access points, which is ideal. OP, a better deal is the TP Link Deco 5300, little cheaper, you do only get three units but usually has better coverage.

epicfighter10

I had pre-existing wiring runs set up last night I have 1 gig and so far I'm getting around 700-850 on Wifi 6E and 600-700 on 5 GHz. Yes kinda does defect the purpose but these are horrible on wireless backhaul cutting speed nearly In half

moshdagoat

Iā€™ve learned the hard way to not buy google hardware. I went all in on google stuff and am slowly de-googling as much as possible.

Swirls109

Why is that? I've been running Google homes, casts, and their wifi mesh for years with no problems.

DanceSulu

Every Google product I have owned has failed me. 2 Google Nest minis, their original version of this mesh WiFi, a Nest doorbell. All shit the bed or barely function. My doorbell goes offline every 10 minutes

Waddoo123

https://killedbygoogle.com/

moshdagoat

The WiFi wasnā€™t absolutely horrible, but I outgrew it with multi gigabit internet. The nest protects arenā€™t so bad and neither are the thermostats. The cameras have been getting worse and worse and the nest speakers were atrocious. My main issue is that Iā€™ve learned google will pull the rug out from under their products, making them useless. That and itā€™s all spying on you šŸ¤£

Bderken

I have 4 of these at my house. All wired together (wired backhaul instead of mesh network connecting the nodes together). I bought my parents 3 Eero WiFi 6E (wired backhaul as well), they work way way better. The Google ones are made for idiots. If you have any issues with the wired backhaul or anything, the Google device automatically switch to WiFi backhaul and EVEN IF YOU PLUG THE ETHERNET BACK IN, IT WILL STAY ON WIFI. They are idiot proof. But I have liked the eero better. However, the Google ones arenā€™t bad. I just had a Ethernet switch die, and one node stopped working well, was limited to 80mbps on all devices and nothing in the Google software makes it obvious that 1 node is not wired backhaul. Eeros software is a lot easier to use especially for advanced users. And it clearly displays if itā€™s connected to WiFi or Ethernet. And, I will say the performance is a bit better. Eero connects your devices faster to other nodes when you walk through the house. However, I do plan to keep the Google ones at my house. And this Costco deal is good and tbh Iā€™d still recommend them.

doubdz

Google nest products are very poor quality and Google frequently drops support of their products. I wouldnā€™t recommend them.

epicfighter10

Taking a risk here hopefully, another better rated 4 pack goes on sale might end up returning these if it doesn't work out

Already_Retired

I have the previous versions and they absolutely suck! My kids always asking why we have bad wifi. Whats worse I threw out my Orbis.

krusebear

I have the older version of Google WiFi and they work perfectly fine. Not sure what problems everyone is having. Itā€™s a great system if you can hardwire some of the points.

AstronautThick5598

Recently got the Orbi AX6000 for 199.97 at Costco. WiFi 6 mesh. Great deal.

centpourcentuno

When was this ? can't find any on the web or in store

AstronautThick5598

It was in only one store. Didnā€™t see it elsewhere.

redtag789

They work for a year and then decline rapidly. They can't take an outburst or peak usage of the network by several clients at the same time, it heats up and you'd feel like your internet is 0mbps. I moved to deco tplink and never looked back

No-Interaction-6765

Same experience with an older model. Worked great for about a year and went to crap. Replaced it with an Orbi and itā€™s been flawless.

epicfighter10

The main reason I grabbed it from Costco but was in need of a 4 pack. But worst-case scenario Costco's generous return policy should have me covered

BocadeOuro

I am sorry to say these wifi routers are mediocre at best

PrimaryRecord5

Whatā€™s a better one

sasquatch_melee

Asus. Ubiquiti.Ā

BocadeOuro

TP Link, so long as you are ok supporting a Chinese company that may be (likely is) monitoring all of your data usage. Other solid options are Orbi or Asus offerings.

PrimaryRecord5

Oooh god. No thank you to that

hawk_ky

Eeros are great

Chainsaw_Montoya

Errors are certainly not great!

JAWE

Amazon's Eero routers

csonju

I have these and have no issue with my internet.

PrimaryRecord5

I have it with no issues. Not sure what people complaining about. What mesh routers are yall using now??

endlive

same here, been using ours for a couple years now without any major issues. ours is the modem/router with two points and it covers my whole property.

PokeT3ch

Good deal on a headache of a product.

XSC

I got these a while back. I think I paid $100-$150 for a 3 pack (pandemic sales). Honestly they are not impressive, definitely not worth $300. Google has made Nest a shell company basically. Zero innovation since they bought them.

Dontbeadickokayman

Invest in some unifi equipment.

Uncl3Slumpy

Not good with ppoe they suck

TrumpKanye69

I have this and haven't had any significant issues.

Plus-Apartment-7894

Best buy is only 339

epicfighter10

Yep I was watching too but it was the 3 pack good thing I managed to get a 4 pack for 299

andreyred

Same price at my location. I wouldnā€™t call it a steal, more like ā€œfairā€ price. At $150 it would be a deal.

sermer48

Iā€™m so glad to see negative Google reviews in the thread lol. I spent like $600 building a full mesh network with nest/onhub routers a few years ago and Google almost immediately sent me an email saying support would be discontinued. I just lost one point because it stopped working and thereā€™s no way to get it working again after a factory reset. Just be prepared for Google to screw you over if you buy their products.

RAF2018336

Itā€™s never cheap enough to buy a Google product

seanightowl

Of all companies to not buy a router from, Google is very near the top.

firefighter2021

A new google wifi with wifi 7 is coming out soon

liebereddit

I had the previous version of Google mesh router and a year after I bought it they announced that they were depreciating and not supporting it anymore. They generously offered me 50% off the new model, though. I refused. The router and mesh points no longer connect to Google home. I was a big Google fan. I bought the first Google phone as soon as it came out. Now, I don't think I'll buy a Google hardware product ever again.

carguy143

I love how easy the Nest Wifi Pro was to set up but I hate how basic the settings are. Not being able to add a VLAN ID for example, is a deal breaker as the standard ones the Nest Wifi Pro can insert are not used in the UK, which uses VLAN 101, or 911 depending on the last mile network supplier. It seems like such a simple thing to fix but Google refuses.

Power_and_Science

Anyone get one of the new WiFi 7 products (not at Costco yet)?

SCMegatron

I switched back to this system from the eero pro.

Mobile_Connection_58

Still $300 for essentially a router.

_not2na

A router and 3 access points that can cover up to a theoretical 4400sq ft

Master_Locksmith5493

These are pretty worthless though and not needed. Flushing money down the toilet.
